Came for the Golden Retriever content, stayed for the Defender stuff - welcome back, look forward to the LS swap, cammed LS3 going in my 110 over Winter..
We run 3 defenders for pulling ships ropes and wires, 2 TD5s and 1 2.2 puma.. between them they’ve provided us with over 40 years of reliable service. I don’t have the same confidence in the puma as I do with the TD5 engines and I personally think this is a great conversion! My wife’s disco TD5 (16p) is around 170bhp and has given us trouble free milage, unlike the original which unfortunately had the oil pump bolt come loose!
Great to see you back, love how you tell us who your suppliers are and give helpful advice on how to do things (unlike another firm on youtube (bootneck) that like to be all secret squirrel unless you have deep pockets.). Its a Community owning a Land Rover! Be good to have a short update on Juice since the move and 6 months on. Hope it was not trolls that stopped you posting for so long.
Great video, and welcome back! I'm planning the build of a couple of LDV's, a 400 truck and a 200 van based around TD5 swaps. The engine is "in the family" and both use the LT77/R380, but having the option to build them from scratch with 6-speeds will make them far more economical and usable for longer distance, especially with the ratios available from Transits and Rangers.
Who'd have thunk it, my biggest criticism of my TD5 is the noise and effort from the engine at 65mph never mind 70 my ears can't take it! great to see you back Sam, looking forward to more great content.
I really enjoyed watching the complete video rather than another channel constantly inflating costs. In three videos the cost rose by £15k in a month! Keep it up. Reverse selling, mention nothing, don’t do the hard sell and people will buy from you. Nice work buddy!
It’s a great idea Sam. You get the best engine mated to the best gearbox, inside of the best body and frame. I’d take this swap over the BMW or LS any day 👌
Sorry, but the M57 kills the Td5 in every aspect - power, torque, reliability, smoothness and choice of transmissions. AND....the M57 is a 'Land Rover' engine in that it was fitted to the Range from factory....
Great to see you back on YT mate 🎉 Very cool project, we’ve been considering M57 for my father-in-law’s Puma her in Australia but this looks like a very cool option! Would you share the list of required parts for the conversion? Super cool!
Love it !, personally I love the TD5 got one in my disco, Built a series 3 109 bobtail with a 200tdi conversion with series gearbox and transfer, definately miss my td5 on highways
Yep, I tried using the mic again and it was not behaving - sadly sometimes you only realise in editing weeks after the fact. Next vid won't have this issue!
Nice Job,I Had a Mapped TD5 And Wished it Was a 300Tdi 🙂I Had High Ratio Transfer Gears in it ,I fitted a MileMarker Hydraulic Winch And IN Total Added Around 250KG to it.
Bloody f***ing impressive as you lot say. 😉 Well done mate! All though I’m a petrolhead living in Suffolk, I’ve always much preferred a mapped Td5 over a Puma or 200Tdi engine. Cheers from an LR Disco 2 V8 enthusiast! 🇺🇸 #Nanocom
I love the conversion but, when this truck goes for its next MOT, won't it get picked up that it has a euro 3 engine when it should be a euro 4, as the TD5 will have to meet the later emissions standards for the vehicle's registration date as it's registered on or after 1st September 2002?
An MoT doesn't evaluate all of the emissions like type approval would. They will do a smoke test and make sure that it still has a DPF if their computer says that it should have one, and that's all.
@@johnantonine4505 it's not even whether it has a DPF or not, it's whether the DVLA database thinks that it should. For example I had a Peugeot 607 HDI which was one of the first vehicles to have a DPF, but, it was never put on the DVLA database as having one, so I could remove it and the MoT tester had no way to know that it was supposed to have one.
Great to see you guys back on TH-cam! I have a TD5 but I'm desperate to improve the driveability, what's best: disco 2 transferbox, V8 5th gear or overdrive?
Thanks for watching Elliot! 💛 V8 5th gear with a 1.2 ratio transfer box would be my suggestion, or the MT82 conversion. Unsure where you're based but if you'd like more info, email info@juicemotors.com for costs and timescales 😊
J/M. Well done on recerecting a +20 year old donk with a modern twist ! ! We know you can go better with the juices flowing, so let's see a more up to date version of a JLR HC130 Ckassic Defender pickup put onto the chassis of a 2011-2024 Ford PX Ranger ? ? V.
What a specific request! 😂 I'll add it to the ever growing list... LS3 swap, RRC, Big Red, etc. etc. 😅 If I ever come across a cheap HC130 I'll bear it in mind!
I would consider fitting a Perkins for litre turbo diesel. The type fitted in a Renault Dodge Mini Bus. The TD5 is a good engine, just under powered for the weight of the defender. I have run TD5 discoveries for twenty years, never any engine problems, but the Perkins has so much more torque.
In about 2010 there was a company that made a conversion to put that Ford 6 speed into a td5 . It was short lived and it soon became apparent that a mapped up td5 murders them Ford boxes
Excellent my weekend just got better ! Good to have you back. The blue 90 engine only had 74k miles was it due to poor maintenance?? My puma is on nearly 140k miles should I be worried ???
I am on 125K Miles, no oil leaks, religious maintenance 5000-6000 miles. Replaced intercooler with Alisport big intercooler, airbox (Allisport), stage 1 remap. Engine drives smooth as. Maybe I am lucky. But I talk to the car too. Maybe that helps as well.
Mines on 119k and is currently driving lovely also. Treat it with respect and it should last. I don’t Rev mine out and just keep ontop of maintenance, inc the pesky injector seals.

Probably just me but using BMW engines is just asking for trouble. Unless its an M5 V10. There are some good LR options as you just showed and I suspect this will be a regular transplant for Juice. I ran a Disco 1 facelift and a Series II 'back in the day' and they never let me down so maybe some TD5s are about although I also like the 300TDi. For me it all went Pete Tong with the Ford engines in the Disco 3. To keep my two brain cells going I am rebuilding (hate the word 'restore') a 2001 P38 RR Bordeaux. Interior totally wrecked (stolen / recovered) and laid up for 3 years. But it has the legendary THOR 4 litre V8 (a Turner rebuild from 2015) and after a top end strip, vapour blast and rebuild fired first time. And then died! Wiring loom issues. But we soldier on.
Thanks for watching! We do like the M57 conversions but appreciate your comment. Always fun to try something else from time to time and yes, would happily do more of these Td5 conversions! A Bordeaux, lovely! Good luck with the rebuild 💛

Awesome build Sam. What’s the paint colour of the defender at 26:33 Assuming Keswick green?
You'd be correct 👍
Ah, all is well with my favourite Land Rover content.

How does this work with the MOT? Surely it won’t meet 2011 emissions standards
Very nice.

Not having the slave cylinder in the gear box would be the first priority/biggest benefit, together with longevity the swap affords.
