Had a neighbor that was a Land Rover owner. I learned from him, you start with one, then buy two more for parts to keep the first running. Then you go buy a Honda so you have a way to the parts house.
Did he know how to do anything with his hands? You can't be a complete idiot and own a Land Rover long term. Most people only know where to fill up gas and washer fluid. They look at an engine bay like it's trying to read hieroglyphics.
@@upscaleshack That's a straight up lie. I've been on more trips to then bush than I can count. Several times with my 1990 D110. Eventually I only took my 78 series Troopy. Every.Single.Trip something broke on a LR. Every time. The entire convoy would need to pull off a number of times just on the way to the bush tracks since someone's landy would be acting up. @pablomax9376 Small market vehicles like the troopy are great because you don't need any emissions compliance. But vehicles sold globally do. The black TD5 is a shining example of the Shine it and sell it ethos a lot of dealers have today with older defenders. Modern customers arent as likely to look closely underneath or in detail before buying, trusting in the dealers good name or reputation. We see a lot of first time Defender owners about 2-4 months after they have bought them (we are a garage) and the things we have to show and tell them are quite often devastating. For example a 2001 TD5 110 recently we had to put a whole rear 1/4 chassis on to as the rear end was so rotten it had let the fuel tank go and the whole thing was resting on the rear sway bar! And then the engine fried itself good and proper and a new engine was required....all in the first 3 months of ownership. As we always advise people take someone with you who knows the basics and always get it up on a lift if the seller wont do that or resists taking it to a local shop to do that then just walk away....

This is a huge problem for the majority of defenders in every market not just Africa. Dealers will shine them up, and sell for top dollar. If you’re familiar with these, and know where to import parts cheaply (If not in the UK) You can fully rebuild one of these trucks for a reasonable cost. I hate when businesses cut corners and sour peoples experiences

Squeaky rear brakes on the 110s were a common problem. There should be some 0.5mm shims between the pads and pistons but they most often don’t get fitted. You guys well come to South Africa, enjoy and explore this country has to offer, may you have a safe trip, and please defender,I haven't got to smile as much as these guy's
This looks like an epic trip and thanks fpr bringing us along! I feel like loose bolts must be a British car thing. I had a triumph spitfire and it seems retightening bolts was a weekly thing. I wish I knew about locktight back then.
its a good thing you are all Macgivers! Discos are like old Harleys... no oil under it, no oil in it.
2:56 strong words for someone who should be working on his Mini 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 🏅
“So I gotta take it all apart when I get it home and rebuild it.” Like you weren’t going to rebuild it when you get it home anyway, Rich!😂
35:12 You guys are just on another level with the fixes, much respect 🫡
Necessitie is the mother of invention.
In the Australian Army when the first defenders came in to service, Big upgrade from the 2A i was driving at the time.
You know those defenders were all driven there from the UK then the owners came to their senses and traded them in for a Toyota to drive home 😂
LATE NIGHT DBG UPLOAD YESSIR! Text'd all my buddys about it! Having a groupchat watch on it!
You ain't a mechanic\millwright until you've used the completely wrong tools to get a job done! This trip was just the ultimate skills test!
Compressed towel thread tape, on the roadside in SA I approve!
Thanks for sharing! Late post because Aaron was editing all weekednd
Excellent work gentlemen. Brilliant video.
The nicest truck of all the black one is giving them the most problems and it was supposed to be gone through and be like New. I really hate to say this BUT I think those guys ripped you off after your trip I would definitely go and have a good talk with them.
I did, they ignored me. SA has a 6 month warranty when you buy it from a dealer. Not worth our time though. They will get bad exposure and hopefully other potential customers will find this video
I think you need to study writing the English Language
I am flying down to San Jose at the end of the month to drive a 2005 Toyota Corolla back to Ontario. A flight from Watertown New York is only $150 Canadian.
Landrover, every trip is an adventure, even if you just wanna go get the milk and the paper
ARB Compressor might be the high pressure switch (ie it kicked in for 4 seconds, built pressure in the system then turned off automatically :-)
More so if it didn't get instantly hot.
I experienced this with my setup
Awesome first episode 👌🏼
I'd love to see more shots of the actual landscape you're driving through though 🤞🏼
What a well paced and enjoyable show! Looking forward to the next episode. If you're ever Joburg side, my mate runs a landy restoration shop called Unreal Fendi. He loves the cars and would be more than willing to give you a hand sorting out issues and sourcing parts.
This is awesome guys, great mission
Really enjoyed watching this. +1 for more adventures like this!
nice Bad Obsession Motorsport cameo right near the beginning
As a Canadian from SA, I approve this content 😂
Squeaky rear brakes on the 110s were a common problem. There should be some 0.5mm shims between the pads and pistons but they most often don’t get fitted.
Glad to see landrovers being used how they were intended. I’m going from the U.K. to just inside the arctic circle via Latvia and Estonia in January.
Safe travels.
Theres a reason why Toyotas are the boss around these parts😂
24:00 Did they use a Speakon connector for the winch controller?
I watch a lot of stuff , this is the first time in a long time I’ve wished I was on the trip I’m watching . Looks like a bloody good adventure .
Been waiting so long for this
Shell Helix is for gas cars though it's written for both petrol and diesel, Rimula is for diesels, Spirax atf and w140 oil for transmissions
Snorlkels are used to suck clean air above the dust when you are driving behind another vehicle on a dirt road, and not to go diving in a river.
Was that @BadObsessionMotorsport around the 3 min mark?
Great camera work!
I hear the Grand Tour film crew is available 😂 But for one camera, this is awesome.
Thank you. Remember that Grand Tour has about 40 people following the three with support vehicles. What you see is what you get with this crew
@@DEBOSSGARAGE Yes, that makes this even cooler. 😉
Brilliant movie, can’t wait for part 2 ❤
We drove from Joburg to Cape Town in a Ford Fiesta, we definitely saw our share of sketchy roads. It would have been more fun in a Defender!
You've just completed the number one on my bucket list. Nothing better than friends and an adventure.
You got it. If we can make this make financial sense, we will do this with other countries as well. We did a few through USA, but would like to see the rest of the world
@DEBOSSGARAGE it'll never make financial sense lol but wish all the best of luck. Wish I was there with yall.
@@scottsmall9898 well they have a youtube channel, sell merch, have a sponsor or two and they also have a membership program. So if they can make this make financial sense depends of how many people watch and like it. That will dictate yt earnings, merch sales and membership numbers
U all are definitely a lot of fun! Keep it up!
for anyone wondering about the outro song, it's "Riot" by Blood Red Sun.
Great to see you out here in SA and our surroundings!
One wife, livid 😂😂😂
Master class for a short film.
I love the shortage of tools and workspace 😂 makes it intresting
DeBoss seems like a great dude.......
Excellent work gentlemen. Brilliant video.😀
Andy was a big help loading the tent.
Love your show, need to learn how to take the bonnet off the Landy, it is easy and it makes working on them a lot easier(because you will be working on it a lot 😅) Just don't lose the hinge bushes.
The bushing flipped and it was a pain
This trip is going to be epic just like the start
I’ve been to SA, Namibia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa, the Landy wasn’t that common in the bush or in the towns for that matter…… The absolute majority was Toyotas in most places! You boys are brave to go across SA in landys😅
YES Boss! got a 50s Pirsch firetruck if you're looking for anymore retrofit projects ;) keep your hands full Chief
So freakin sweet!!
