    Arguably the most important concept to understand in the world of kart racing - is the racing line. Now what is the racing line you might ask? The racing line is the path around the track that will allow you to carry the most speed throughout the corners.
    Many believe that the fastest way around the track is the shortest distance, like when running. However, this is NOT the case. In racing, the fastest line is the path that allows for the least amount of turning, and the largest radius so you can carry the most amount of speed.
    Here is a look at what the racing line looks like from a top down view. The line begins on corner entry, where the kart is positioned on the outside edge of the track. As the corner progresses, you should aim towards the apex, or the center of the corner, and then finally ending at the far edge of the track on corner exit.
    To see this concept in action, let’s take a look at some onboard footage from one of my League events at COTA Karting here in Austin.
    As you can see, as I start on the outside edge of the track approaching the corner. As the corner progresses, I move in towards the apex, and swing wide and use all the track on exit.
    Now that we know the racing line, I have 5 great tips to ensure you are maximizing your speed while driving.
    1. DO NOT DRIFT. Drifting is slow. No matter how cool it may look or feel, drifting is the fastest way to ruin a lap. The wheels are designed to move in a forward direction. Anything other than that is slower, and should be avoided.
    2. Keep your steering movements smooth. Jerking the wheel around scrubs speed into corners, and can upset the balance of the kart. Only steer just what is necessary to avoid losing time, and keeping your steering fluid will help you stay in control.
    3. Use the brake when necessary. Even the best drivers in the world have to be masters at slowing down. Use your brakes in a straight line when coming up to a turn to avoid spinning out. Remember, sometimes feeling slower is actually the fastest way around the track.
    4. Use all the track available. A common mistake new drivers make is not making use of every inch of available space along the track. You can find seconds of time by sticking just a few feet closer to the edge of the track along the racing line.
    For example on this turn, you can see I am right up against the barriers on the right, come right up to the barriers on the left, and use all of the track on the exit.
    On this turn, you can see I creep off the outside edge of the track to gain a bit of an advantage on entry to maximize every bit of space I can.
    5. Stay away from slow drivers. If someone is holding you up, pass them quickly and safely. It’s in your best interest to safely move around them so you can continue going fast. On another note, if someone faster than you is behind, let them through!! Stay close behind and study the way they take the turns. The best way to get faster is to learn from others on the track.
    If you have a GoPro or action camera, bring it with you. Some tracks may have different rules about what is allowed, but generally it’s a good idea to record your race footage and watch it back later on to see where you can improve. You can also compare it side by side with faster people to see what to do differently.
    Alright guys so that’s it! The beginner’s guide to going fast on track. If you learned something from this video, please consider leaving a like down below! It really helps me out and shows me that you enjoyed the video.

      my solution i learned from racing games
      a "feint" overtake
      basically before a corner on the straight, you go to their outside to "overtake". as soon as they go to block you, then you switch back to steal the inside while they cant see you. then zoom

    Ethan, it might be harder with modern, sticky tyres, but have you tried 'flick' driving to shorten the braking distance? T Fullerton was the master at that. My friend, Kevin Warner also perfected it. As did, 6 times world champion, Mike Wilson.

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hey Richard!! I love this technique. I use it in small amounts when I race Lo206. They are low-power motors so its pretty detrimental to get sideways, but a little on entry is certainly helpful! In faster classes I see this being used a lot.

      @@denislyons OK Denis, not tried it with modern sticky tyres, so you might have to modify the technique for those. You can try it gently at first, just a small turn / 'flick' on the brakes. You basically break the back-end away using the brakes. (Of course it only works on a kart that has rear axle braking). As you perfect it, you should be able to leave your braking a lot later and shorten the braking distance. You also have the kart partly turned already when you get to the corner.

    once you can run fast laps, the next level is passing... most important thing in passing is when not to which is MOST of the time. I never "attempt" a pass you either have it or you don't. Unforced errors is the best way to win a series . Second is the learn late break passing... once you mastered this, 99% of all karters don't even know what this is. Look it up.

    Hi! I’m doing karting as a sport and I’m having my next lesson Sunday. The track where i drive has many high speed corners and a few corners where you need to brake hard. Do you have any tips for me? Would love that.

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey!! So sorry for the delayed response, I have been away from my computer this past week. Hopefully this reaches you in time!! My tips for high speed corners is to make sure to ask how to set up the kart chassis for the track. Usually if a track has a tendency towards one type of corner, you can gain a lot of time in the setup. Make sure to keep the wheel smooth with small inputs (no sawing at the wheel), and avoid oversteer. For those heavy braking zones, just be careful not to overshoot them. Find a braking point that works for you and stick to it. Also - test alternate lines and how early you have to brake for them to get prepared for overtaking. For example, try taking an inside line like you are overtaking into the corner and see how early you have to brake compared to the normal line. Best of luck!!!

    Thank you brother.I just picked up karting last week and I love it. I didnt know it would be so hard. I cant tell what is making me spin when going into a corner (too much throttle and steering input at the same time) or (too hard on the brakes)?
    It seems I cant get the car to rotate around tight turns god enough. I either carry too much speed and run wide or I scrub too much speed and lead w the nose of the kart and cant get the rear end around.
    Any tips?

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      for sure! if you are running wide, try your best to get slowed down before the corner. For the other issue, make sure you aren’t ripping at the wheel (turning sharp and hard). Should be a smooth fluid motion.
      To get the kart rotated around, you can play around with the braking. Likely you just have rear brakes, so use that to your advantage to stay right on the limit of grip going into the corner and let the rear step out a little bit to rotate. You can also play with a tiny wheel flick to get the kart going in the right direction on turn in.

    The letting faster people pass to learn is something HUUUUGE I wish more rookies would realize. Nothing wrong with being a beginner, but it's maddening when they try and purposefully block everyone when they're literally being lapped. Haha. I'm middle of the pack at best and I always let faster karters pass. Safer and more fun for everyone.

    Hi, thanks for good video. I'm still not sure about when to brake & when to just lift off at certain corners. Also, is best to brake hard and fast & back on the gas early for best speed? The small, tight tracks I've been on, the fastest guys I see actually brake & turn (slide a little) backing the kart into corners & then aiming a straight line out.

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Steve! For corners where you aren't sure, judge the speed by following a competitor and figure out what works. Remember to prioritize the exit - for example you may be able to make it by just lifting off, but it may be too quick of an entry and end up being slower. It is a good strategy for tight tracks to rotate into the corner, just don't overdo it or it can be catastrophic :))

    • @keineinteresse5813

      When there is a training before a race you can try to take a corner how you think it goes the fastest way. If you take it too fast then you know that you have to go a little bit slower. I, for example, have it in my feeling how to brake for a corner because Karts don‘t go as fast as F1 cars you know

      Hey Anton! I used to do no conditioning as my racing was pretty casual. When I started racing competitively, I had to gain weight to fit into the weight requirement, so I've started working out at a gym - lifting, machines, etc for overall bulk for weight. It also helps with being able to handle the kart as well haha. Hope this helps!

    Well don’t drift like an idiot, but do drift into the corners to get some rotation into the corner so you won’t need to turn the steering wheel as much. Drift a little into the corner by locking up the brakes in the last moments of the braking phase.

    i think the racing line doesn't win races as much in some types of motorsports, like f1 for example. In f1 or open wheel racing in general, there is plenty of downforce and barely any bodyroll compared to most closed wheel, so the racing line isn't as crucial. You just have to enter corners at the right speed. For example if you want to take over your opponent, if they brake early in a corner, you can take advantage of that by braking a bit later than them and not as hard, so you can keep your momentum up and coast through that corner.
    Edit: however, in karting, especially like when its for fun with your friends, it will probably be easier and you can probably waver from the line. It depends on the level of your opponents

    Any tips specifically for 4-strokes? It seems the challenge is not bogging them down, but especially with slow tight corners like semi-hairpins I can't quite figure if a late turn in to open up the exit is the way, or if it is better to retain momentum and turn in earlier for a higher speed path but with the downside of being on the throttle later.

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey Andy! Great question. I think the best way to make it through tight corners is a *slightly* later apex, but the trick is to not fly in, but slow down enough to get on the gas early, before the center of the corner. Slow in fast out is always best, but momentum is important especially in low power karts....Try your best to strike a nice balance between the two, but always prioritize the exit of the corner. In rental karts especially, you can sometimes keep a very small bit of throttle in the pedal to keep the revs up so when you're off the brakes, you can rocket away instead of waiting for the engine to catch up. Hope this helps!

    Are you allowed to press the gas and brake pedal at the same time to be faster in corners?

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Elias!! Generally, this is not a good idea - especially in electric karts. I would recommend ONLY braking, or ONLY accelerating at any point in time. However, in some gas karts, you may try keeping a *little* bit of throttle on during cornering to keep the revs up so it doesn't bog down. Hope this helps!

    So I have 2 questions. I always have people accelerating into the back of my cart when I go inside for the late apex :( is it me or are they being jerks? & questions 2 does leaning help? I hear it does & I hear it doesnt so im confused XD

    • @EthanPalosh
      @EthanPalosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey!! When they are hitting you, they are taking a shallower line, thus carrying more momentum into the corner which is why they end up hitting you. By taking a late apex, you're prioritizing the exit, but losing speed on entry. If they're close enough to be hitting you, I would prob recommend taking a look at going defensive or at least not opening the door up too far on the inside so they think they can make it through.... As for leaning, I personally don't think it helps. A subtle shift in the seat is as far as I would go, but in the end it's only a couple pounds either way - you can make up much more time focusing on braking and taking an optimal line. Leaning can also be distracting and mess up your perception, so I believe it's better to stay planted and focused :) Hope this helps!
