Winning an F1 Championship requires more than clocking the fastest laps; It requires ”race craft,” which includes knowing when the racing line isn’t the key to victory. Today we're going to explain why the racing line isn't necessarily the best way to win a race.

When Senna first started racing in Europe, for an F3 team, a driver for the same team asked him how come, when it was raining, he drove in a different line than everyone else and still lapped at least one second faster than the rest.
Senna explained to him that when the track was wet the usual racing line was covered in oil and rubber, making it much more slippery, which was why he would follow the line less used and was able to enjoy better grip than all others.
I heard that the day after Senna died, in a Mexican TV show called "Caliente" where the host was interviewing people who, at one time or another" had had contact with Senna, and the explanation was given by a Mexican driver that drove for the first team Senna ever drove for in Europe.

@@allensinho4 Both, rubber gets slippery when it's wet, so he didn't drive on the rubbered in part. And definitely, not as much spray and more downforce if you drive outside the traditional racing line.
Not to forget, wet and dry lines are very common practice in racing, but since wet lines come across the dry (rubbered) line, there are tricky little slippery spots which make them hard to master.
Both lewis and max are known to be good drivers in the wet, and a well known F1 champion once said that wet driving separates the good from the great.
I don't know how informed you are and maybe I'm preaching to the choir here 🤷🏼‍♂️.

I’m an artist and and an ex-racer and the perfect racing line concept is similar to when you draw stylised humans/animals. You need to be very familiar with the anatomy before you can stylise convincingly. Same with racing. You still need to know the perfect racing line of by heart to be able to adjust yours intuitively according to external conditions. This is exactly why coaches are always teaching newbies about the racing line in detail at first.

  • @chickenlampbrent
    @chickenlampbrent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

My experience was amateur stock car at the local circuit for a few years. It was a quarter-mile oval but it was trickier than it looked and the line you took might depend on how hot it was that day. I did a lot of door handle to door handle racing with one guy in an eagle talon against my 4th gen Prelude. I could never pull ahead of him if he kept the inside line but if I waited behind him, I knew his car would push up to the wall toward the end of the race on his hot tires. Having a nice racing line is alright when you're not in a pack and you get the line you get. You just have to be a ruthless opportunist if you want to win and take things right to the knife edge of control and hold it there for the duration. There's a mental state and you have to be decisive on frighteningly short notice and make the right decisions more than wrong ones. Even so, you can be doing everything right and it can still all go pear-shaped. Then when you're rolled over and crashing with a dislocated limb and you realize you have absolutely nothing to say about what's happening, that's interesting.
Your brain seems to speed up and you can process data very quickly and this distorts time. Fascinating.

They were playing checkers, he was playing chess.

Eh, I wouldn't say it's that much of a balance. Going a little slow will result in your altitude dropping, which will increase your speed, making you go back up again. It's how elliptical orbits go.
For the ISS to stay in orbit, they actually have a HUGE velocity range. Anywhere from escape velocity at their altitude, to deorbit velocity at their altitude. Of course they want to be in a specific orbit, but they still have some wiggle room. The ISS actually boosts itself periodically, to keep the orbit in check, because it still experiences some aerodynamic drag.

Excellent video, you guys covered a lot! Unfortunately I didn't learn any thing new. You mentioned the sun moving and thus moving where shade hits the track, heating the track up and cooling it down in spots as the sun moves (or rather the earth rotates). Clouds do this too, which brings me to wind. Yeah, you forgot wind. A tailwind can add speed on a straight resulting in a higher top speed and the tailwind can increase braking distances because it is pushing the car. Conversely a head wind will do the opposite, decreasing top speed, but also decreasing braking distance. Adjust you braking point as needed. Also, as discussed in Indy 500 coverage the wind can affect cornering. If you are driving at the edge of a car's grip a wind coming from the inside of a corner can push the car wide. Conversely, wind coming from the outside of a corner can help hold a car on the line, which means the corner can be taken faster if there is wind coming from the outside, but slower if from the inside.
Second, and this may blow your mind, you know how we have differentials because the inside tire follows a shorter path around a corner than the outside tire and so the tires need to be able to turn different (differential, ehh, ehh) speeds. Well, this happens across the tires contact patch as well. The inner edge of a given tire will follow a shorter path than the outer edge of the same tire. Since they cannot turn different speeds most of a tire is slipping a little bit in every corner and what parts are slipping or gripping comes down to weight transfer.
Next, the fastest a car can go is determined by tire grip. But, depending on the tire, there is a small window beyond 10/10ths of tire grip where the car can go faster and still maintain control. Drag racers will launch their car with the tires spinning ever so slightly because of this and the window between grippy slow and smokey slow is ever so narrow. This is also why Senna was the greatest, he was willing and able to use this window between grip and slip more effectively than most. Michael Schumacher was very good at this as well.
Lastly, late apex is my favorite apex.

First vid of yours that I've liked, Donut. A worthy watch. 🤙🏁 Can you take on the challenge of the same topic with oval racing & in particular, focus on the vast lengths of the races? My - and I suppose other - non-mathematical/-geometrical minds could consume it... if it were even possible to provide this type of analysis re: ovals in the first place (due to the high math of loooong lengths of races + far less variance in speed / tire side loading from lack of any braking at all, let alone straight line vs. lateral tire scrub). Excellent work here!

"Because he's braking further into the corner, he can apply brakes later on the straight, that makes us a good line for outbraking an opponent and passing. Also, because he's braking later, he's spending longer on the power and reaching higher speeds on the straights. That also result in a sharper turn and late apex, the car is pointed straight earlier in the corner so full throttle acceleration happens earlier on the straights, leading to even higher speeds"
Otherwise great video, but what was that passage? :D You can't have all those things at the same time! Either you brake late, which will give you advantage on corner entry, that can be used to block someone you were passing and take his position, but getting late apex means you actually point your car straight later, start accelerating later, sacrificing your speed on the next straight to pull this move. Or you can do otherwise, sacrificing your corner for better exit and more speed on the straight - could be a legitimate defensive tactics if you have someone in DRS range, but not close enough to pass you in that corner.
And you can do neither for tyre saving, you will always have to brake more than you need to, turn in slower than you can, but if you have to do so and have a significant gap behind, using second option for corner line is definetley smarter, since bad corner exit and bad straight line speed loses you more time overall, than non-opnimal line through a corner.

I think the sharp turning line has more to do with leveraging the insane straight line braking and acceleration of race car. By braking late and hard, then turn the nose of your car quickly to set up for an explosive straight line exit you basically ended up faster overall than following the ideal racing line which assumes constant velocity. Nvm, you explained it at 11:58! Great

Late apex if the next is long acceleration section, early apex if the opposite - next near slower corner.
The reason for late apex is that it offers a longer acceleration period which is useful, well, on long acceleration section. It is suitable on tight corners, like a hairpin followed by a long straight. So it is not like Hamilton (or whatever) does it in every corner. :)
