My god, I remember that Soccer set, I built it, played with it for roughly two days, and then turned it into a pile of parts. But my goodness did I love it for the short time I had it despite hating sports. That was probably one of the only other sets from 2001 I had other than BIONICLE,if only I could find all of the parts from it now, most of them have vanished into the void over time from moving so much. LEGO felt so magical back then, though these days they just feel like a corporation with how little they focus on unique sets and designs, and almost solely on licensed themes with one or two original/popular themes they piggyback off of until people stop caring. I miss when LEGO took risks, because we had so many cool sets and things due to that. The whole "Look, we're LEGO! We've got something for everyone, we do anything! Everything!" bit you spoke about defined LEGO back then, but these days LEGO feels so limited as far as the themes they offer. Not to mention they barely even market anymore, they just expect their products to sell because or "We are LEGO, you know LEGO, buy some new LEGO!". The people purchasing LEGO are still immensely creative, set designers are pretty darn creative more often than not, but the people running it and choosing what themes to make, the choice for marketing and that sort really aren't at their best anymore since passing years. I'm not sure if I'm the only one that feels this, likely not, but it really does feel like LEGO themselves aren't daring or pushy anymore, and that is what made them great in my honest opinion. I want them to take more risks with thins like BIONICLE, Rock Raiders, Arctic (Which they did return to a bit, thankfully) and that sort, and I want them to make themes like that that can manage to last for at least two or three years each while still making new ideas. I miss the "You want it? We've got it!" side of LEGO.
I still remember finding a slightly different print of this catalogue in a classroom that we had been in for indoor recess when I was in third grade. It was mostly identical, except for the Bionicle page having a different format with the Toa's canister artwork displayed on the borders and all of them being placed in the center.
This was such a nice nostalgic experience! This was my first catalogue and also my very first sets came from this year!! I remember reading through this catalogue over and over again looking at everything, thank you for bringing back such nice memories jang, this was so cool
This video makes me emotional. I remember having this catalog as a kid, and looking through it almost every day until it fell apart. I hadn't seen Return of the Jedi yet, and I remember thinking the Emperor had four arms because of that misprint on the imperial shuttle page. Thank you for this video Jang.
Life on Mars is one of my favorite system themes. I love that the martians and the human astronauts weren't enemies, and that the martian tech could be used for both excavation and defense. And yes, I loved the weird colors and the feel of their culture. My favorite thing about them, though, is the play pattern, how the sets are all sorta made to be locked together in various ways. The Martian base has docks for the red and blue mechs, and that big, tan scorpion one (probably my favorite, both in terms of build and color scheme) comes with its OWN special dock that fits the base' third transport tube. That's just... that's so great. As all over the place as the theme may've seemed, there was a sort of cohesion and grand design to it. There was a place for everything.
Wow this catalog brings back so many memories for me! That blue express train was my one and only train set to be purchased. I was a big fan of the Life On Mars theme for some reason? I can't even begin to explain why. That arctic theme was also one of the ones I had a good number of sets from. It is so crazy to see all these things now, mostly because they're all in pieces now.
The polearm was the highlight of many themes of this time period. I'm surprised you had never seen that casting till recently. None of the current weapons lego has released compare to the original polearm.
I have very fond memories of the old developed-in-house Lego games. While they lack the polish of modern Lego games, they are all their own unique experiences and have their own identity unlike the cut and paste (but admittedly well executed) formula of Lego's games today. Just to name a few examples Alpha team was a puzzle game, Rock Raiders was a simple RTS, and Lego Island was an adventure game. I highly recommend trying Alpha Team, Rock Raiders and Lego Racers 2 if you get a chance. They graphics haven't aged well but the unique mechanics absolutely hold up. Maybe that's just the nostalgia though.
Life on Mars was a great theme. I had a chance to bulidall the models and play with them and I loved the premise when I was a kid. The colorsheme WAS good and very unique. The coolest thing is everything connects pointing out humans and aliens working toghether.
I loved LEGO Adventures, I remember oohing over some of those sets, I had/have the seaplane from that line, I got it as a gift, but I, as a child, dismembered it, so it took me until I was like 14 to actually look up the instructions online and hunt for all of the pieces in my LEGO bin. I loved that set I customized it a lot too with guns and stuff.
Jang, if you go back to the Star Wars section, look at the Emperor minifig shown with the Shuttle. You'll see the magazine has a slight misprint with a second set of classic yellow hands that are in the wrong place.
Jang, if you would like to try out some of the old LEGO video games, as you mentioned in the video, I can highly recommend Lego Soccer/Football Mania. I am too, not a biggest soccer fan, but the quick-paced gameplay (no red cards, no off-sides, ball never gets out of the play,...), humor and stylisation have made this game one of my all time favorite LEGO video games. ...just a tip from a viewer. :-D
Ah, right around my time. I was 6 years old back then, so most of the earlier sets I remember getting are actually from this era. Let's see.. I had some of the Alpha Team sets. That quad at the very end is one of my first Technic sets. Had a couple of those tiny alien racers. The blue mech from the Life on Mars set (two of them). I only had one Bionicle (Gali) and years later found a shelf full of Pohatu, so I had the two (re-assembled them some years ago, so I still have them). Oh, oh, and the football stadium (just the big one)! Pay attention to the fact that there are hardly any "town" or "city" sets. I was playing "Lego Island" back then, and being unable to find sets that resemble the game was frustrating.
the blue mech from life on mars was called the red planet defender, it was a great set. i also had two of them, as a kid, and called it "an army" because we were a bit short on money back in the day. there were SOME town sets that were like lego island. like, a police station, i think, from back then was like the one from lego island.
fuggwit mcfriggenston Well I had two of it because I received them as gifts from two separate people. I never complained though, It is always cool to get a duplicate when it is LEGO. More parts!
Mickey the Maniac yes! but for me, it was more about the collecting. i had two, because i planned on getting enough to call it an army, since i was an avid life on mars collector.
I actually have this catalogue lying around somewhere. Man I wanted those Adventure sets with the dinosaurs so badly, but they were never sold in my area. Kinda surprised you haven't seen that halberd before, I had a handful of them from old castle sets.
I think they actually released about four versions of those soccer/football buses in different color schemes (blue, white, red, and black), each with sticker sets including multiple different country flags on them that you could apply both to the rear bus windows and the figures. Really interesting idea!
consider i got into the lego system (like the older stuff, not duplo) in 1999 this brings back memories, if fact i had a fair number of these sets. ah... nostalgia
I think it's a mixed bag. Older sets have objectively worse builds and piece value but also come with neat stuff like baseplates. I feel the simplicity of the sets and Star Wars being the only license led to a more humble feeling. While Lego is still great and set quality has improved immensely, the overall aesthetic of lego has shifted to a more edgy dynamic look. We can't have simple knights or ninjas anymore with simple smiley faces, they gotta be extreme and cool.
Ha, the Arctic one you thought was black and white I actually have. I got it as a vacation gift... for some reason I used to get vacation gifts. :) And I'm amazed you don't have the halberd piece! I think I got one in the Fright Knight sets.
You've never seen the halberd? the 2001 era castle sets was the only ones I was around long enough to get anything from. I had lots of those halberds and hated them. I always wanted the dark grey broadswords remember when I was young, I wanted the movie maker set, someone bought one for me for a gift and a few weeks before Xmas, asked if I still wanted that or something else, long story short, it went back. kind of regret it. I was really fascinated by the stop motion movies, speaking of which where did they all go? seems around 2003 or 2004 Lego just stopped being cool, that seems to be when the licensed crap took over
I have tons of those Halberd pieces laying around my house. I'm surprised you've never even seen one of them. They're one of my favorite weapons Lego has done. Looks great with guard type figures. You should try the Alpha team game. It was pretty interesting as a puzzle game.
13:24 actually nothing you see is a sticker, it is all printed. edit: and as for the critique on the set 6026, kinda disagree, since that was a really cheap way to get oneself a king figure. and those special weapons were in a lot of sets back in the day. Heck, i recall them being in that 5988 lego pharao's forbidden ruins set too.
I'd LOVE to see you cover some of the Racers sets you have. Looks very different and interesting, not necessarily in a good way but I' fascinated, hope you would be willing to review some of them! Great vid as always!
I actually managed to get my hands on some of those mini-fig axe weapon pieces back in the 2007 Knight's Kingdom line. I might be wrong about the line's name there, but it was the knights theme nevertheless.
13:45 You haven't seen that axe/lance before? I don't know how you've missed it but I know it happens with everything. xD It's an amazing peice though, it's so big and detailed and even quite menacing looking! I love it and I got alot of those peices before I even saw one of the smaller variant long axes/axe polearms. Those smaller ones don't look so menacing compared to these big ones. xD You definately should get a bunch of them. They are most common in dark grey but I think I've seen a few in black as well. The only thing I see as a possible problem with them is that they are so long that they can be too big for figures in tight spaces and such. They are great for riding minifigs or asdecorative weapons to have on walls though.
mmmmm the good old days of lego for me, i was 5 or 6 back then and i remember first getting bionicle, oh the memories. i wish i had started getting other sets like life on mars cause that looks really cool and back in thouse days my family could aford to buy lego sets.
I think these older themes were more inspiring and pushed imagination more which I preferred. IMO simplicity=/=bad and vice versa and it seems all the newer lego stuff just strives to be as complex and convoluted as possible with infinite varieties in tiny minute pieces that it kind of takes the "fun" out of building and just makes it a big time consuming ordeal that ultimately results in something far smaller and unsatisfying. Though my favorite theme of all time was "Life on mars" which everyone seems to hate so I know my opinion is very unpopular.
Was that Johnny Thunder in the Studio part? These LEGO Racers aliens actually show up in the second LEGO Racers videogame, which was a sequel to the first game. Ah, Alpha Team I loved the little flash games they had on the website. Never got the chance to see any of the actual sets, tho. If I'm correct, the main villain, Ogel, is a descendant of Knights Kingdom's Lord Vladek, right? Hey, that Star Wars battle droid carrier appeared in the first level of LEGO Star Wars the Videogame! Yup, Johnny Thunder, one of my favorite minifigs to ever be created. I prefered the Knights Kingdom's large action figures over the play sets. As for that weapon, I had a few of them, I always saw them as giant axes. BIONICLE was an underdog theme, huh? Funny how a theme that had such low expectations managed to become LEGO's best-selling theme yet. Of all the LEGO games, my favorites were most certainly LEGO Island Xtreme Stunts, the two LEGO Racers games, the BIONICLE games and all the Travelers Tales LEGO games.
Whoo life on mars! I never owned any sets when they came out but I just started collecting them a couple months ago and I currently have 11 of the 13 alien minifigs!
Oh boy, I remember those days. Unfortunately I remember those days mainly for the utter forgettability of most of the LEGO sets. Even the LEGO catalogues of this time I quite seriously dislike. I have been collecting them since the early 90ies and they show little, tell little, inspire little. Those days really are the dark ages of LEGO in my opinion and they are also the closest thing I ever had to a dark age myself in that I did not buy a single set back then. I did my own MOCs with my own parts but the new stuff? Horrible! Luckily, LEGO got on the right track again!
They should make another trains like and sell locomotives of all different types based of the real ones like the BNSF one and offer extra train cars like they did with the Santa Fe train
Those halberds started with the Dragon Masters, I believe. Much better sets than the ones shown here, if you want to review some sets with those weapons.
Fun to look back. As for soccer (as you American's call it) I much prefer going to matches here than when I lived in the Uk. Its such a nice family event. I don't think I have seen even one thug like fan in all twelve years of going, whereas back in my home country, there are often plenty! lol
I recognized so much from this! Jang, if you happen to read this, are you planning on finishing up your playthrough of Lego Dimensions? I only ask, because next year is the 20th anniversary of Lego Island, and it would mean a lot to me if you somehow did a playthrough of that game.
Weren't the first few Harry Potter LEGO sets released in 2001, the same year as the first movie? Although they weren't mentioned in the magazine of 2001 LEGO sets, I'd like to see JANGBRiCKS review that LEGO Dimensions Team Pack with Harry and Voldemort in it
My god, I remember that Soccer set, I built it, played with it for roughly two days, and then turned it into a pile of parts. I liked the Alpha Team game. It is a fun little puzzle game.
They can probably bring it back in tablet form too.
Enjoyed thumbing through these old catalogs, fun video idea! Thanks for making it.
Wow, what nostalgia! I remember seeing these as a kid, a very young kid. Wish I had kept all those instruction manuals and things.

I might start collecting those.
It is kind of adorable seeing Jang turn into a child again when going through these magazines. :)
The football (soccer) field set was fun to play with against a friend/family.
I remember when me and some friends got the first Bionicle figures mine was Kopaka because i love snow.
Kopaka was my first set as well! After that I would get the Ko sets first every time a new wave came out.
Lego racers and Lego racers 2 were my favorite games ever! I still play them!
Same Here Two Classics that will never die in my life. Timeless :-D
I've passed many afternoons at my grandparent's cabin poring over that exact catalog. It's good to see it again.
If you look at the front cover, there are 2 buildings. One is partially falling. This booklet was made in 2001. Illuminati confirmed,
As a child I had so many sets from 2001! So nice to see these again
Bioncle, Studios, Kingdoms, Dino Island. This was the best and favorite year for Lego in my childhood
Jang, these catalog videos are so cool! I always think "Hey I had that one as a kid" or "my brother got that set for his birthday"...
Oh wow, I remember this catalog so well. I remember all of these themes (except for the cars at the end) and I had a big nostalgia bomb at each page.
Man this brings back memories of Lego Racers 2.
Twas my very first video game as a kid. Got a lot of memories of that game.
mars, imo, was my favorite world.
fuggwit mcfriggenston That stupid robot that couldnt be affected my powerups tho lol
Josh Spinney riegel is actually insane, bringing his own robot into the race and all that.
That guy from the studios sets with the glasses on his head was always my main guy back in the day
I remember getting these catalogs in every set! I wish you could get a mini catalogs in at least the big sets these days.
The polearm was the highlight of many themes of this time period. I'm surprised you had never seen that casting till recently. None of the current weapons lego has released compare to the original polearm.
I have very fond memories of the old developed-in-house Lego games. 13:15 That's a printed window and the flag pieces are also printed!
Now I feel nostalgic after remembering the days I played Lego Racers, Knights Kingdom and Alpha Team
Jang, if you go back to the Star Wars section, look at the Emperor minifig shown with the Shuttle. You'll see the magazine has a slight misprint with a second set of classic yellow hands that are in the wrong place.
The axe/spear-like weapon around 14:00 was very common in Knights Kingdom. Great series by Lego :)
Mystery weapon is from Dragon masters I think it's a Halbred?
Jang, if you would like to try out some of the old LEGO video games, as you mentioned in the video, I can highly recommend Lego Soccer/Football Mania. I am too, not a biggest soccer fan, but the quick-paced gameplay (no red cards, no off-sides, ball never gets out of the play,...), humor and stylisation have made this game one of my all time favorite LEGO video games. ...just a tip from a viewer. :-D
Whoa.
#nostalgia
Thank you for each and every one of your videos! [Even though I, sadly, don't always get around to watching them all.]
That pole-axe weapon was in the Lord of the Rings theme.
The weapon was introduced in Dragon Masters series in 1995 maybe even before.
It is called a halberd and has appeared in many castle themes and sub themes
Wow, so nostalgic. I actually had a lot of those Alpha Team and Star Wars sets!
I remember this one :) thanks for the nostalgia trip!
ah when bionicle was clean, simple and good looking. g2 will not be missed by me.
13:47 I have tons of those... Never thought they were special!
Oh My.... As soon as that soccer set came up, all the memories of my brother playing against each other came flooding in. Thank you :)
The large ax is a halberd, they were very common in the lego castle sets in 2007 when it was skeletons vs knights.
That castle set was my first big lego set. Still have most of the pieces (including that axe)
I think they actually released about four versions of those soccer/football buses in different color schemes (blue, white, red, and black), each with sticker sets including multiple different country flags on them that you could apply both to the rear bus windows and the figures. Really interesting idea!
consider i got into the lego system (like the older stuff, not duplo) in 1999 this brings back memories, if fact i had a fair number of these sets. ah... nostalgia
The older Lego themes are so much better than the newer ones imo.
Interesting opinion, which specific ones?
agree, they used to fascinate when i was a kid
I think it's a mixed bag. Older sets have objectively worse builds and piece value but also come with neat stuff like baseplates. I feel the simplicity of the sets and Star Wars being the only license led to a more humble feeling. While Lego is still great and set quality has improved immensely, the overall aesthetic of lego has shifted to a more edgy dynamic look. We can't have simple knights or ninjas anymore with simple smiley faces, they gotta be extreme and cool.
Aquanauts! By far the greatest Lego theme ever!
Classic town and Castle were WAAAAAY better than city and NEXO knights will ever be.
Ha, the Arctic one you thought was black and white I actually have. I got it as a vacation gift... for some reason I used to get vacation gifts. :)
And I'm amazed you don't have the halberd piece! I think I got one in the Fright Knight sets.
Jang are you gonna do a museum for your city ? Your reaction to that pole-axe inspired element brought me that thought.
You've never seen the halberd? the 2001 era castle sets was the only ones I was around long enough to get anything from. I had lots of those halberds and hated them. I always wanted the dark grey broadswords
remember when I was young, I wanted the movie maker set, someone bought one for me for a gift and a few weeks before Xmas, asked if I still wanted that or something else, long story short, it went back. kind of regret it. I was really fascinated by the stop motion movies, speaking of which where did they all go?
seems around 2003 or 2004 Lego just stopped being cool, that seems to be when the licensed crap took over
Hey, I had one of those LEGO Racers things back in the day! Nostalgia!
Jang, seeing the lego soccer display makes me imagine how you would implement a sports stadium in your city, please make that happen!
I have tons of those Halberd pieces laying around my house. I'm surprised you've never even seen one of them. They're one of my favorite weapons Lego has done. Looks great with guard type figures.
You should try the Alpha team game. It was pretty interesting as a puzzle game.
I have tons of those axe things
I love these racers sets
Clearly this was the year I was most into Lego, because almost every page made me go "omg, I had that!" at some point.
I remember wanting that Mars life playset sooooo badly for my birthday and I didn't end up getting it.
i still own like 90% of those sets :) What a trip down memory lane
I like the lost world Arthur Conan Doyle adventurers sets from this catalog
13:24 actually nothing you see is a sticker, it is all printed.
edit: and as for the critique on the set 6026, kinda disagree, since that was a really cheap way to get oneself a king figure.
and those special weapons were in a lot of sets back in the day.
Heck, i recall them being in that 5988 lego pharao's forbidden ruins set too.
Hey Jang? Will you review some G1 Bionicle Sets?
Jangbricks you should review the Lego studios
Oh man, such a wave of nostalgia.
I miss your old bionacle MOCs
That axe at 13.52 has been around since at least 1993 dragon masters
I have like 20 of those Halberds Jang was so excited about
13:50
You've never seen that?
I have like 8 and I'm not even an avid collector...
Same I was surprised.
Me too.
That weapon is called a Halberd Jang, and Im honestly really surprised you have never seen that piece before
I would love to see more Studios sets. They were so cool and I never got any because I was only 1 year old when they came out:)
13:45
You haven't seen that axe/lance before? I don't know how you've missed it but I know it happens with everything. xD
It's an amazing peice though, it's so big and detailed and even quite menacing looking! I love it and I got alot of those peices before I even saw one of the smaller variant long axes/axe polearms. Those smaller ones don't look so menacing compared to these big ones. xD

The only thing I see as a possible problem with them is that they are so long that they can be too big for figures in tight spaces and such. They are great for riding minifigs or asdecorative weapons to have on walls though.
Have you ever considered building a movie shoot lot like where there's different movie sets etc.
oh, i remember the german version of this catalog... 17 years... and the sets i own.. oh the memories!!!
mmmmm the good old days of lego for me, i was 5 or 6 back then and i remember first getting bionicle, oh the memories. i wish i had started getting other sets like life on mars cause that looks really cool and back in thouse days my family could aford to buy lego sets.

sigh i miss thse sets those were ones i grew up with
Was that Johnny Thunder in the Studio part?
I still have 7315 set with space shuttle, great one
Whoo life on mars! I never owned any sets when they came out but I just started collecting them a couple months ago and I currently have 11 of the 13 alien minifigs!
Where do you get them from?
eBay
Oh boy, I remember those days. Unfortunately I remember those days mainly for the utter forgettability of most of the LEGO sets. Even the LEGO catalogues of this time I quite seriously dislike. I have been collecting them since the early 90ies and they show little, tell little, inspire little.
Those days really are the dark ages of LEGO in my opinion and they are also the closest thing I ever had to a dark age myself in that I did not buy a single set back then. I did my own MOCs with my own parts but the new stuff? Horrible!
Luckily, LEGO got on the right track again!
Jang, do you ever intend to get those old LEGO dinosaur canister sets, or the Jurassic Park III studio sets?
I like the weird stuff that lego has made and is making, I also collect the xalax racers, it's interesting
Good old days. Where have they gone?
I have that battle cars set. Missing a wheel though...
Lego racers 2 and lego island 2 were beyond great
When are you reveiwing the at-st set
Could you review some Bionicle G1 sets? Or at least the Toa Mata.
They should make another trains like and sell locomotives of all different types based of the real ones like the BNSF one and offer extra train cars like they did with the Santa Fe train
Two colours I really wish they'd bring back... sand purple and teal (dark turquoise). Also, sand red.
i was surprised when you said you havnt sean that weapon before becuase the last time it was released was like 2011 and I've got like 10 of them.
Will the foot ball pitch be in your city
Knights kingdom was my favorite when I was younger
Wow! This is the only catalog from earlier than 2007 that I have right now. :)
Your profile picture looks like mine
I remember Lego had magazines. I got a bunch of sets thanks to that magazine
I like the part where you turn the page.
I'm dieing due to a nostalgea overdose now...
Oh the feels. Thank you >.
