Slugger, you have to be careful making videos about Galidor. One of your viewers might end up being the CEO of LEGO in the future and they WILL bring back Galidor as a result of this video.
Theres a certain man-after-man speculative zoology quality to a lot of these galidor mocs, i'm noticing, which is a surprisingly strong thematic throughline for what I'd expect from a more strictly action-figure-y mix-n-match building system. Neat!
I have a confession. Maybe 8 years ago I was sorting a huge used box of Bionicle parts. Like most used boxes, it included random other brands of toys - mega blox, McDonald’s toys, random cheap broken plastic etc. I keep the mega and throw out the rest as plastic waste. It wasn’t until years later I suddenly realized looking at Galidor videos that I had thrown out that awesome red staff thinking it was some random brand. I share my pain, because every Galidor video makes me regret it more and more!
Oh no! Honestly, I think a similar fate has befallen a lot of Galidor, sadly. It just doesn't look like LEGO to the uninitiated! (Also, you might not want to look up the price of that staff alone on Bricklink) 😭 ...but in case you do, here's a link! www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=gal56&idColor=17#T=P&C=17

Y'know, I've been doing a lot of thinking about the Galidor release while watching your videos. I remember finding the idea really interesting in catalogs, but seeing the toys in the store, it was always sort of uncanny looking at the organic mix-n-match limb thing going on. Now the one that *did* catch my interest was the awesome looking Jens robot! Unfortunately, it was the only stand-alone figure with that kind of mechanical look, which defeated the entire mix-n-match gimmic for me. If only Lego had released a line of buildable figures leaning more on a robotic aesthetic, I think they would have had a real winner on their hands!
Indeed! I’ve often expressed the opinion that Galidor works if you remove the human characters. Then, add in more robots/sci-fi creatures and you’re golden!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I love how smug the slug looks on the thumbnail It's like he is saying "Yes. We both know it. You can't do anything about that."
I used to love Galidor though I had no real knowledge of it. My parents bought me the CD on clearance for the (not so good) Galidor PC game one time and I spent hours on it with a friend of mine. Growing up and seeing all these videos of it... well... I love it, even if it's not what I love from Lego, as a company. It's weird and creative, a totally different way to look at constraction. Maybe it was overambitious and it didn't work out, but these niche, weird creative ideas are missing from Lego today.
I remember watching Galidor as a kid and the only thing I remember of the show is the series finale was interrupted by a baseball game. I was very peeved at the time.
I might not personally think of galidor or bionicles as the greatest lego there is... but I do like seeing slugger enjoy these series whilst he teaches me about the silly nuances and their importance in the brick evolution.
I never owned any of the Galidor toys, but I loved the show. To that point, I had seen nothing quite like it, and I see how Doctor Who gave it a lot of influence considering that The Egg was essentially a Tardis. But the writing was pretty strong as I remember, there were some good comedic moments, as well as heart warming moments and the show was not overly serious even when it was being serious. If I had known how much toy sales mattered back then for the show to pick up a second season or at least continue from it's cliffhanger ending, I might have well gone out of my way to get some of the figures. Ah well, at least there's fun to be had, even if the results can be quite the abominations if you go beyond the human figure. (I do remember seeing ads that showed a few such abominations, so it was clearly intended to be allowed to do that.) I think Galidor as a whole was ahead of it's time, as these days you can easily pick up action figures that have customization options to basically make your own creations. Galidor could fit right in with such figures if they use the right aesthetic. Nothing realistic, but a stylized cartoon aesthetic I think would work very well, especially if a Galidor revival were to be done as a cartoon and it picked right up where the live action show left off. (It would have to since I know the actors are much older now.)
That's super cool! Thanks for sharing your history with the theme! I had neither the toys nor saw the show when I was young, but I do remember all the Galidor advertisement in the LEGO Magazines of the era.
