You can actually, the 8700g will have the integrated radeon 780m, which is pretty much a 1060 (according to bechmarks on the ryzen 7940hs, a laptop apu that uses the same igpu and that is already out in mini pcs ) The radeon 680m will most likely be used in the 8600g, and it perfoms like a 1050-1050ti.

I bought a 5600G (whole system upgrade) when GPU prices were bonkers and the integrated GPU was actually a little better than my old one. Now I have a 5800x3D and a proper GPU, but the 5600G is still a decent entry lvl CPU or makes for an excellent low energy media PC.. I really like those chips

I found steam deck verification being a good indicator for how well a certain game runs without a dedicated gpu.
If it runs on steam deck it will run fine at 1080p on a ryzen integrated gpu.

This is cool, im playing cs2 at 720p on my r5 7600 igpu till i get my gpu, i avg more then a 100fps without a gpu. Great feature on these, also web browsing etc usage without any issues.

Correction at 1:39 - Vega 7 in 5600G (I personally have that processor) can be allocated up to 16GB (of course there is no increase in performance, but it can if the game wants to start at all :D ), it all depends on the motherboard. My MSI Motrar B450M can. I know this from the time 2 years ago when I still didn't buy a new graphics card (that's why I bought a 5600g) because of the crazy prices. I also think it's the same for the 7800X3D
True, you can allocate more memory but it doesn't use it. It will only use up to 2GB as vega always has.
both of you: there is no reason for large amounts of "dedicated" video ram on apus .. memory virtualization can and _does_ swap memory pages in and out of the "dedicated" portion during render calls .. the on-die gpu is on the fun side of the memory controller .. the typical an on-bus memory copy from "system memory" to "video memory" just doesnt happen .. only frame buffers needs to actually sit in lower memory

I totally forgot igpu was a thing and got a low profile host GPU to go alongside my VM'd 4090. Could've justified a CPU upgrade instead 😂😂
@@aidencoder Why would anyone mess around with GPU passthrough to VMs nowdays. Proton is pretty much 100% in games, and any games that have anticheat issues with proton will usually ban you for playing in a VM anyways.
@@PineyJustice well given the near native performance when done right, why not? All my workloads are in VMs and containers. Having a windows box for gaming, office, some windows only apps is useful. I find it works for me. Yeah Proton is great and all, but I don't really want games on my Linux box either. My host is fairly minimal and sterile. I can also pass my 4090 to windows for gaming, then switch it to a specific VM for AI. There's lots of reasons really.
@@aidencoder I've found that proton generally has better performance than passthrough anyways now. Second, you can do all that stuff right in linux, wine has gotten so good at running windows apps I've yet to find any I can't get to run with minimal poking.

I'm curious how games run at a bit lower resolution. iGPUs are very bandwidth limited. Another interesting thing would be to see whether lowering textures gives a big performance boost since the 3D cache can be better utilized due to lower vram usage.

I recently got a new pc with the 7800x3d and a 7900 xt GPU but the GPU seems to have been damaged. I hope I can still game a bit while the replacement GPU arrives [in maybe 6 weeks :/]. Thanks for this, I have some hope now

The iGPU is 6nM, not 5nM since the iGPU is now in the I/O die, not the processor CCD. AMD said there was alot of extra unused space in the I/O die, so they threw the iGPU in there since it didn't cost any extra.

I found the igpu on the new 7000 series actually overclocks quite well, got mine stable at 3100mhz and played wow for a bit until I got my 7900xtx.
Which cpu were u using??

built in graphics have come a long way over the years. i like seeing these as a budget friendly gaming build option.
Oh i didn't realize they put igpu's inside their higher end chips this gen! Its pretty cool that radeon igpus are getting powerful enough to run modern games at least somewhat decently!
Yeah, apparently their lower end 7000 series do have built in graphics but it's still Vega and not RDNA but haven't tested or checked them myself.

Some 7000 series APUs's just a rebrand of the old series.
The parts that's using Vega is the 7030 series, which is basically a rebrand of the Ryzen 5000 series APU.
It's like this:
7040 = Zen 4/RDNA2
7035 = Zen 3/RDNA2
7030 = Zen 3/Vega
7020 = Zen 2/RDNA2
I did this same kind of Test on my 5600G when I first got it, I found it was Comparable to my FX6300 and 1650 Super the New CPU and GPU were replacing... After Fooling Around with that for about an Hour or Som I Threw the 1650 In while I was Waiting for my 660XT to get here... Over the Black Friday Sales, I got the 7800X3D Bundle from Newegg, it Replaced the 5800X3D I'd Replaved the 5600G with... I forgot about the APU's on these New Chips and I never did Try it Out, Glad someone did... Thanks...
The top-end CPU's tend to have pretty gimped iGPU's. Ryzen 7 78040U has the Radeon 780m while the Ryzen 9 7950X3D only has the Radeon 610m.
every desktop Ryzen cpu has the 610m, down to the 7600 (non x). some even have none (7500f)

can you test their hardware encoding performance (x246, x265) @1080 60fps for streaming on twitch/youtube like if it drop frames or if encoder gets overloaded

I’m using MSI board, but I cannot get windows to see the graphics chip. I have screen it’s just when you play the game it shows zero memory.
Just FYI, the amount of memory you can reserve for the iGPU in the UEFI is kinda irrelevant, except when applications refuse to launch because they demand to see an arbitrary size of VRAM. Thing is, these APUs can grab more RAM dynamically and as-needed - they'll return it aswell. When you do a static allocation with that UEFI setting, you're only making sure that your system can't use that RAM for anything else anymore, as it will always be assigned to the iGPU!
This is super interesting. So with something like smart access memory, is the igpu getting much faster access to system ram than say, a gpu running out of vram and going through the cpu to allocate spill-over ram? or is the "vram" speed of an igpu comparable to spillover dedicated gpu usage (thus never really that fast)?

Regarding SAM: That's a technique for dGPUs with dedicated memory.
For the CPU/OS to push data to the dGPU, a part of the physical memory address space is reserved for that device. Writes to these addresses then go directly into the VRAM of the GPU.
The problem with this was, that not the whole VRAM was mapped into these addresses, but only a small window of 256MiB - that's a relict from 32bit times, as there was only physical address space for 4GiB in total (RAM plus devices). That window also necessitates a lot of back and forth communication, mostly to have it point to a different section of the VRAM, i.e. when uploading big chunks of data or multiple things, which costs a lot of time and lowers throughput.
With modern 64bit CPUs, there's more possible memory addresses than you could ever fit memory (including device memory) into your PC. reBAR/SAM simply allows it to have an address space that covers the whole VRAM (=reBAR), which simplifies data transfers, since that window doesn't need to be moved around anymore - the algorithms in the driver that decide when to copy how much data can be tweaked for this (=SAM).
Regarding transfer speeds of iGPUs vs. VRAM spillover on dGPUs:
iGPUs share the CPU's memory management unit and address space, so the CPU can simply put the data into RAM as fast as it can possibly write to that - the limiting factor with this is usually RAM speed and not the CPU itself.
Afterwards, the addresses get marked as "in use by the GPU" for the OS/driver to keep track, and then the GPU gets passed a pointer (a memory address where the data starts) and maybe its size (to know where it ends). The data can then be used immediately.
AFAIK SAM is neither used, nor needed here, although the driver does have certain optimizations for that shared memory scenario.
VRAM spillover on dGPUs is definitely slower than RAM that's more or less directly used by an iGPU. This has to do with the CPU and GPU having to do a lot of back and forth communication over the bus for bookkeeping.
What also often happens in case of spillover is that "cold" regions (=not in immediate use) of VRAM get evicted to RAM and then the fresh data gets pulled into VRAM, which is already quite slow due to all the copying.
Things become really problematic when there isn't enough cold data in VRAM - then you shuffle around data from VRAM to RAM and back multiple times for drawing a single frame. That behaviour is called "thrashing" and also known from swap memory - in that case, performance gets utterly crippled.
iGPUs don't have that issue, since there's no distinction between RAM and VRAM from a device point of view.
When RAM gets full however, the OS evicts some of it (AFAIK only program/application memory, no GPU data) to a swap file on the HDD/SSD in order to make some room. This is also very slow.
Disclaimer: In reality, things regarding memory addresses are a bit more complicated, as there's a whole other layer mixed in: There's not only physical memory addresses, but also per-process virtual ones, using a kind of mapping table (=page table), but the general principles I explained above still apply.

my dad has this chip with a 760 because we haven't bought the 4070 yet, and it's quite impressive. it's miles better than the igpu in my laptop, nowhere near as good as the 3060 in my laptop, but it does have 1 RT core so that's something.

It's actually 6nm cause the igpu on 7000 series isn't on the cpu Chiplet it' actually on IO chiplet which typically isn't the latest node . so also it doesn't benefit from the Vcache
You know, for an internal IGPU, this is pretty impressive! 30FPS is still playable. It's not ideal, but it's playable!

Yes the CPUs media accelerators for encoding and decoding video. Its AMD VCN, as opposed to NVENC which is just Nvidia's branding of said function.

If my RAM arrives before my GPU does I could probably just build it now and use the integrated GPU until the 4070 is here.
It does feel like they are limiting the iGPU a lot and I'd love to see what they could actually have done with the CPU form factor.
I thought I could just live with my 5600G and it did everything I wanted great on my workbench, even CAD stuff, but I had to get a GPU to edit videos (Davinci Resolve).
Yeah. I'm a 2d artist, so for photoshop and clipstudio 5600G is great as it is. I notice no difference when I plug a dedicated GPU in. Video is more demanding.
Davinci (and probably Adobe) basically want to live in VRAM so ultimately choose to disregard AMD's iGPUs. It really unfortunate because the iGPU has a RDNA2 media accelerator, that perform quite close to the dGPU version. Handbrake will use it just fine for transcoding. In testing I could transcode 140FPS on the iGPU vs 165FPS on a 6800XT.
I have a problem with the GPU on the 7800x3d, when i do absolutely nothing sometimes goes to 99% and i get a black screen, do you know how can i fix this?
Do you mean the built in iGPU or your dedicated one? Either way try running a DDU on your drivers and re-install the latest.

Maybe i skip something with installing drivers. Got drivers from www like AMD Adrenaline.

In bios i activated integrated GPU (my 3090 is on RMA), RAM is set for 6k speed, no OCs, windows profile balanced.

I don't understand where you get your numbers from. I also have a 7800x3d. And if I activate the graphics on the cpu, the Task Manager says that the graphics only have 512 mb. So where does your 8gb come from? Normally I run with a 4080 card and the performance is top, as well as the power consumption.

@@TechLabUK I'm sorry but I still question these numbers. I have an Asus ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI motherboard and I have checked the bios and there are no settings for the graphics other than turning on/off. So no it's only 512Mb. And on the AMD website there is no info about it. I don't think AMD is lying or that Task Manager is showing errors.
@@mkill73 I believe it is called "Reserved VRAM" within the Bios or "Reserved iGPU VRAM". It has always been configurable ever since the A Series AM4 chips on motherboards and also on Intel boards. unfortunately I cannot take a screen shot of the settings as I returned the Asus ROG Strix B650E-E because these boards are just trash.
@@TechLabUK "Reserved VRAM" is just shared GPU memory, which is the same as RAM. And that is not real Vram. My brother have the same cpu but with Gigabyte MB and its the same for him.

The 5600g is supposed to be capable of handling 4gb of RAM. My 5700G uses 4 gb of RAM. The amount of RAM available to the APU is proportional to the amount of RAM you have installed. 16 gb gives 2 gb for graphics. 32 gb gives 4 gb for graphics. Overclocking the infinity fabric and the GPU yields 15% extra performance.

Sincerely I was expecting much more for a $490 CDN cpu. The am4 5600g is a mere $180 CDN with the same graphic performance at this time.

5600G is a product dedicated for iGPU while 7800X3D happens to have iGPU.
I have friend that doesn't have spare money to buy dGPU but wants to play games via Android emulator and few games.
7000 series really helps saving the budget.
And... that's why I personally wait for 8000G series.
My wish is AMD put at least 12 CU of RDNA3.

I never got that far. After this video I dropped the GPU in and then spent a week trying to get the system stable. After several rebuilds I gave up and sent it back :(

@@Zombie101 Just completely unstable, would run fine directly after being built and then on reboot would barely ever post or get into windows. When it did I would lose displays, drivers etc etc

It might be a great move for AMD since it means a lot of people who want to make budget PC will go for AMD instead of Intel.
Plus, if they somehow make iGPU sync with dGPU, it makes AMD's dGPU more attractive than Nvidia.
But... 7800X3D might show a great result because it has a really big cache that makes its 1% is really close to average

It'll probably be somewhat limited by memory bandwidth and perform about the same or a bit slower than an integrated Radeon 780M (i.e. Ryzen Z1 Extreme).

The on-chip CPU of the 7800X3D is fine to get your system running if your dedicated graphic card is broken. But I wouldn't use it for gaming. You are literally stuck below 10 fps.

5000 series with an iGPU are technically APUs and are designed for much more. On AM5 you want an 8000G chip which out perform the 5000G chips massively.

amd drivers come bundled and you need to only install the ones for your part which is not all of them. have to look up each one to see which one u need and which one u dont

All iGPUs are crippled from the getgo by having to use motherboard RAM which is much slower than graphics memory on discrete video cards. Personally, I would always use a discrete GPU, because I consider integrated graphics to be just a gimmick for office pcs or if you only want to do email surf the web or stuff like that.

AMD and intel both offer CPUs that have built in graphics or not. On intel any CPU ending with an F has no built in graphics.
igpu's should be benchmarked more often. if you're looking for productivity and maybe indie gaming in your off time, 7800x3d is probably still a decent pick but you could get away with a cheaper 12900k that performs better. Not sure about gaming capabilities.
The PCIE lanes are whack on Intel and the 7800X3D performs quite well for “productivity” while using very little power. Overall, the R7 7800X3D would likely make a better “productivity” CPU as well.
Gaming wise the 7800X3D is at least 15-20% better generally.
With good cooling a ~ 105 BCLK the 7800X3D is VERY close and sometimes superior to the 7700X when in comes to task outside of gaming.

RDNA2 isnt that much better than Vega -- some operations require extra clocks (interleaved operations) in vega that rdna "solved" .. so with an anemic 2 compute units its not going to be even close to the specialized vega apu
Im going to get a 7800x3d and use it with my current 1080ti. Because the cpu determines your minimum fps and the gpu your maximum fps and fidelity. If I can get lows of 165fps (or close to it on low settings) thats all my monitor can show me anyway and I can skip the whole nvidia gpu gouging thing and give them my middle finger instead of 2 grand.
Yeah right, but you don't have to buy the best gpu out there. 4070 or 7800XT / 6950XTs or even a non xt 6800 are all pretty decent deals.

This is an interesting video, especially now, because AMD is advertising on social media that with these new processors, you can "game without a GPU". I have not watched the entire video yet, but the premise is promising. I might edit this comment after I have completed it.
edit: Its a shame that the 5600g is superior despite its age, but I am not surprised given AMD's aggressive position in the consumer GPU market. The video is overall well executed and I quite enjoyed it. It gives me inspiration for a no GPU PC which can play some games in the interim while I save up for a powerful GPU.
They are pushing the even newer 8000 series AUs now which might be the ones you are seeing comments on. No one really knows how they will perform yet, well... except AMD but their are rumours that we may be GTX 1650 level performance out of them.
@@TechLabUK GTX 1650 performance is hugely impressive, and would definitely reduce my dependence on external GPUs given >95% of my game hours are spent on low load FPS games that even my chinese 5800h miniPC can run.

And they can all be run by potato hardware and still get decent frames. Why even bother testing them 😊
It's so amusing to me that the GPU can't push the CPU to even 10% utilization at any time. About as brutal of a bottleneck as you can get.
