  • After recently building a gaming PC for just £100 that contained an Nvidia Geforce GTX 960. I wanted to see what the card could do in 2024 when not limited by the rest of the system. Is it even worth picking up one of these now? Let’s find out!

The only real reason to buy gtx 960 nowadays is the fact, that this is the beast for retro win xp builds as it's one of the latest gpus with available xp drivers for it and there's no dx9 game demanding enough to slow it down (not counting some horribly optimized ones).

I have a reference design GTX 960 2GB from a dell prebuilt. For those who are into older titles, or comfortable running newer ones at low settings, it's a decent buy if you can get one cheap. I paid £30 for mine about 6 months ago to go in a backup PC.

Nice video, I till recently ran a GTX 960 4GB GPU in my back-up PC paired with an FX -8350 and a 1440p monitor, while playing most games to get a decent gaming FPS, I'd have to go 1080P at very low settings at native setting (Upgraded to an AM4 system, B550 motherboard, R5 5600X and a RX 6650 GPU) as I use the classic point of 60 FPS , system would struggle playing games, of course the FX-8350 didn't help , sold system to a neighbor who just wanted to use it for Internet, so not sure how the GTX 960 would run in the AM4 system, flip PC's and the lowest ranked GPU I use is the GTX 970, which will run most games at +60 at 1080P, I wouldn't recommend the GTX 960 as a gaming GPU.

It's a good little card tbh but shame this was a 2GB model. Did a video on the 970 we have not so long ago and that held up much better, might have been because the VRAM though.

Perhaps worth revisiting this and other older cards in titles that now support AMD frame generation, such as Spider-Man Remastered.

My 960 died last year, but for the surviving copies it's still a good card.
Even if more powerful and efficient cards have come out since then.
But the advantage of this 960 is its bargain price and its performance, which is just right for gaming.
I've worn out my card with gaming and overclocking, and dust since I've had it in 2016. My model was a 960 gainward phantom 2go, very reliable and low-heating.

The system was in sorry shape but I fixed it up and still use it nearly every day now and it runs great. It had a gen one i7 920 which I upgraded to a Xeon 5670 six core 12 thread. It has a Corsair 800 watt PSU that definitely needs replacement soon though, as the voltages are not always stable on it. Like they say about one man's junk being another's treasure.....👍👍
