That moment is amazing, but the thing that seals the deal is the chord that occurs at around 4:32. It is such an amazing chord and compliments the solo beautifully.

I am now 55 and have known this piece since I was about 15. What a wonderful piece. When I listen to it again, it is like reacquainting myself with an old friend.
Fun fact: upper voice of the polyrhythmic passage of the 2nd mov at 22:39 derives from this passing melody of the 1st mov at 14:12. Fun fact 2: I also hear that those two melodies are quite reminiscent of Liszt's "Vallée d'Obermann" 2nd theme. Fun fact 3: a Hungarian Rhapsody 2 reference at 3:49 (or maybe just me hearing things)
i dont think i would call it a reference to hungarian rhapsody 2, it feels a bit too basic for that, but vallee d'obermann is actually also what i was thinking
Thank you! Not only can I now look at the sheet music while listening, I also know that there's a third video with this performance which helps with my fear of it getting taken down (seems crazy, but I just love this performance so much)

I swerar, it's a running thing for Hilary's harmonics to just simply fail her (not that it's necessarily her fault, more likely a string thing). I've heard so many of her live recordings, and that damn E string especially just doesn't wanna quite hit those harmonics lol. Like at 17:25
Imagine just saying violin concerto in D minor No One in the whole world of classical music will know what price you want exactly Not even the composers
I really appreciate you uploading this, but it's a serious peeve of mine that none of these scores ever feature measure #s, let alone page #s... trying to study this score and I have practically no way to identify which page to turn to in context
And yet somehow people think Brahms or Bruch are more deserving of a top 5 spot on the ranking of best violin concertos. Forget top 5, this has an argument to be THE top. I think only Beethoven or Tchaikovsky could rival it.
I don't think Tchaikovsky is nowhere close. Tchaikovsky's is incredibly basic in terms of orchestration, and it's a concerto for violin *and orchestra* - it's right there in the title: the orchestra is an integral part of the genre. Sibelius is by far the king of the genre, but Bruch and Mendelssohn are up there, too. I'd put Tchaikovsky at the end, really. Good tunes but his orchestration is incredibly mediocre.
Why do conductors perform the last 3 notes of this piece ON the beat? It's not, if you look at the score. It's 1 (2) (3) (1)2 (3) 1 - the last 1 being the final chord of the piece. Does anyone disagree...?
I don't understand what you're saying. First of all, it's 1(2)(3) (1)2(3) (1)(2)(3) 1, and if you follow the score the recording does exactly that. What do you mean?
@@classicalmusicanalysis You're absolutely right, Roc. Sibelius manages to convey a 4/4 rhythm in 3/4 bars. I'm so sorry that I made such a silly mistake and I've deleted the comment. All good wishes.
Although I assume you are being ironic, for those who might not know, “poco forte” (a favorite marking of Brahms as well as Sibelius) literally means “a little forte”. Cellist Diran Alexanian said Brahms told him he meant “the character of forte but the sound of piano.” (Quoted in the book “The Teaching of Artur Schnable”). She does indeed have a very different take on the first movement from other violinists.
Twoset describes the passage at 4:24 as “one of the best moments in all violin playing.” I totally agree.
