    The whole section from 31:30 to the power of the chord landing on 32:15 my god... I've never heard another version where the orchestra made this chord feel so immensely powerful. It's like the entire orchestra delays the chord just a bit to take a giant deep breath before releasing it... it feels so overwhelming.

    • @FreakieFan
      @FreakieFan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I don't think I've ever heard that moment played as powerfully and loudly as here.
      This orchestra unleashed some ungodly drama and power on this piece. Damn. So many moments in this recording are so much louder and more dramatic than I remember it being. It works tremendously well.

      No swearing on this holy channel. Jokes aside, I don't think the tempo chosen is Matsuev's decision, sometimes it can also be from the conductor, in this case Temirkanov.

      Roc Vela haha. I meant shoot. Damn autocorrect. It’s almost always the pianist, though. A great example is Mehta conducting Tchaikovsky 1 with Khatia Buniatishvili vs Evgeny Kissin. The tempo is so different it almost sounds like different concerti.

    31:30 reminds me a lot of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", with the mode mixture of the b7 and b6 but still with a major third, over the tonic pedal point. Very cool, modern harmonies, with the Vhalfdim7 over the root pedal (Ghalfdim7/C).

    Does the theme of the third movement seem inspired by Chopin’s Op 28 No 20 Prelude, the one on which Rachmaninov wrote variations of his own?
    edit: It’s interesting - the final movements of both the 2nd symphony and the 2nd concerto have themes seemingly inspired by that prelude. I suppose it’s no coincidence that Rachmaninov made variations out of that prelude - he must have really liked it.

    i am learning this one, but do you know of any versions that actually print the fingerings for piano? it really sucks to write your own fingerings

    Maybe I’m wrong but shouldn’t the horn be written in 4 flats key signature (F minor) ? Because a horn is in F ie when it plays a C we hear an F (ascending 4th) and C minor transposed a 4th above is F minor !

    • @nathanguerard5737

      And the horn written in F minor is harmonically more logical

      @@classicalmusicanalysisYou have made a mistake. Denis Matsuev is the pianist but this performance is from 2014, in London, Proms, and Han-Na Chang is the conductor, with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. I really appreciate your effort to provide this performance with the score so please do not take this as any kind of criticism. Thank you.

      To be fair, if you search up the video of Matsuev’s performance, the orchestra is huge as fuck so synchronization issues were bound to occur.

    I usually love Matsuev, but this is too fast for my taste especially the 2nd mvmt. But he is great in interacting with the orchestra and doesn‘t have too much ego to leave them their space in the music. And the notes don‘t need to be perfect. We are all human after all.
    I think a real reference of this piece to many ppl could be Kissin‘s
