This performance made me cry so damn hard. It was a breathtaking display of both technical mastery and profound emotional depth. His bow seemed to draw raw, human anguish from the strings, yet balanced it with moments of ethereal beauty that left the audience suspended in awe. I'll put it this way, I've played the accordion for over 15 years, and to a certain extent I have a bit of insight into the world of music. Playing such a complex composition in a musical sense was and is simply not for everyone. But Ray Chen is one of the best violin players I've ever heard. Lightness and joy that is reflected in his playing. Sibelius's musical style is easily confused with tension, but his music is certainly one of the underrated examples of how well folkloric and romanticism fit together; he is similar to the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg. In any case, this concert is an everyday highlight for every music lover.
Why are you all so excited. Ray Chen and vengerov have the best recordings, so if someone who isn’t even a soloist is playing it then why they get more credit than the actual ling lings out there
@@glorytofathersonandholyspirit because we fans love to see them play. Yeah there are better recordings but i do like to hear different interpretations
Hillary Hahn, Sarah Zhang and Ray Chen all have their own interpretations of this piece of concerto. You can hear it through the way they interpret the emotional flow of the melody through the bow strokes. I admire Hahn's and Zhang's crisp and powerful strokes which may be superior in some aspect in comparison to ray's version in my opinion; however, the emotion dedicated with Ray's playing in this version has an ethereal melody that is not produced in other versions of the concerto. Ray's unique style of manifesting his emotions during performances is his trademark and I should tell you that this version is my favourite one.
YJ JY - In my opinion, the most expressive version of this is by Lisa Batiashvili. Her recording with Daniel Barenboim conducting is extraordinary, again, in my opinion. Ray Chen is such an expressive interpreter, it feels very emotional to listen to him; the phrasing of the music is very richly expressed, and it's very sentimental. Ray Chen is proof that those who consider classical music a language without words are very wrong: Ray's violin SPEAKS and speaks a language everyone can understand. I definitely love him.
@@martinszemberg-goldgraber8772 he's going for Sterns approach, pushing one of the notes slightly high (so you hear them more clearly) he may be pushing it slightly though..

Not everybody :) People who already knew about good classical music watched this video first, and a handful wouldn't have watched TwoSet's at all. I agree that it would be irresistible to watch Ray Chen's review of Brett and Eddy, and then *not* come to the video of the great professional violinist himself!
@@liamnevilleviolist1809 I think there is nothing to brag about or shame rly. Isn't it nice that non-musicians(or people who weren't interested beforehand) get to know more about classical music? It's okay if you knew it already, I just think the way you phrased your comment is not so nice..?
@@someone3195 Yes I know what you mean. However some people don't know the full story... I phrased it as nicely as I could, considering that TwoSet (and their loyal fan following) are the reason why *three* of my viola students [8 years old, 9 and 12] *quit music entirely* after getting sick and tired of all the viola disses and jokes, and not only seeing it on what was once a beloved channel, but then being bullied at school by fellow classmates that had "just watched the latest TwoSet video and read the comments (and added to the viola jokes). I couldn't convince *any* of the students that their instrument was a fine instrument and that jokes are just jokes and there are real job and performance opportunities for violists.... so I felt like a failure as a teacher of 14 years, and feel into a depression for over a year consequently. Yes, TwoSet have done great things to motivate a younger generation into starting music or even sparking up the flame for passion again in violinists thinking of putting away their instrument after just learning the basics for a few years .. ... but some of TwoSet's actions have lead to *not so great things* as well....as mentioned above in this comment. So actually from my point of view, my comment is quite nice considering I even chose to put a compliment at the end. I have to finish on a low note as well (no pun intended) but actually in my city: there are ensembles and groups that will *not* even consider you as a joining member at auditions or similar processes if you so much as mention TwoSet, seeing as TwoSet has put out a lot of "junk-nothing-fluff" videos and "immature" videos that don't add much to classical music at all, it's just for laughs. The reason why said ensembles and groups choose their musicians accordingly is perfectly legitimate in my opinion considering they are searching for professionalism [as much as possible] and I am on their side with that to be perfectly honest. ....and I personally would like to see a beautiful classical concert of Beethoven, Grieg, Shostakovich, Paganini, Debussy .... *without* hula-hoops being involved. No disrespect to you personally at all either by the way - I've never met you and you seem nice enough (you didn't swear at me, and worded your comment nicely), and I do see your side of the picture in regards to my first comment. The people who do see my underlying bitterness in such comments *do* get the longer reply though, with a fuller personal story, and I have to say sorry about that!
@@liamnevilleviolist1809 I'm sorry for the case with students. But I think it's a normal thing and it doesn't necessarily mean you are a bad teacher or TwoSet is evil :D As you have mentioned, they are children and they might find understanding sarcasm and jokes difficult. I have studied in a music school for 5 years, and I had my own moments😂. (I'm not a musician tho) So, I see where your anger is coming from, but if there are issues, being passive aggressive or shaming isn't the way to solve them, I believe. I'm not trying to be their advocate or smth, just saying what I see. They r professional violinists, knowing the rules of classical music world as good as you, I believe. The amount of passion and respect they show for their work is incredible and respectable in my opinion. The youtube channel is created for fun, and there is nothing to diss saying "Playing while hula hooping is not professional!" Bc..? Of course it's not😂 Besides, the passive aggressive remark about not even being considered to join an ensemble if you mention TwoSet too much, is a little weird? I don't rly know how the qualification process goes, but in any type of application, where you would try to look professional, talking about a youtube channel isn't a smart move anyways. TwoSet violin is an entertainment channel created for fun and nothing else. I still think there is nothing to shame about it. Hope u don't see my comment as disrespectful. Just wanted to explain my perspective. Have a good day.
While it is quite agreeable that Ray's playing is absolutely phenomenal, we also need to take into consideration the work of the symphony orchestra behind him. After all, a concerto is half the soloist and half the symphony orchestra! And also can we take a moment to appreciate the cinematography? Particularly at 15:34, when the camera overlaps Ray and the flutist while they play together, is an absolutely gorgeous moment in the concerto, the calm before the storm. Everything about this video is perfect. Bravo!
Listening to this eight years after and I have to say, I'm amazed by this jaw-dropping performance! I'm trying to come up with smart sounding words to describe what I've just witnessed, but I have no words.

This interpretation feels really jerky, especially compared to Vengerov's silky smooth rendition. Honestly, I find this interpretation by Chen absolutely revolting. I do like his other performances though.
While listening, I was writing down math notes, in particular, the word "Expression." After drifting off for but a second to this piece, I looked down and noticed I had instead written "Experience." And yet, this seems to be both of these, a beautiful expression of what could only be described as an experience...
Ray Chen is a man of discipline, patience and perseverance. This is why he reached the top. He is one of the great violinists of the world because of his determination and hard work. Keep it up, Ray.!!! 👏👍🎉

I’ve listened to the sibelius violin concerto before but I’ve never been so emotionally moved as when I heard Ray play it! Wonderful work! This is truly incredible.
I think Ray's interpretation of the Sibelius violin concerto brings out the wilderness like no one else. Best interpretation I've heard so far I am surprised by the amount of views and likes, Ray definitely deserves more
I am breathless and my eyes have tears... are there words for this feeling? I am not sure but there is something I am certain about: I was moved beyond any words that exist. Thank you, Ray....
I love that even when the piece gets difficult, you can always see that Ray is genuinely enjoying what he does, under all the focus there's always a smile
Honestly, I am new to music and only started a year ago, but this is one of the most beautiful concertos I've ever heard within my time. I am a cellist, but for the upcoming school year I'm going to learn violin as well and I would want to play this masterpiece one day along my journey.
This is an amazing production. Direction, sound, video engineering are top-notch. The maestro and symphony are superb in the interpretation. Ray Chen is absolutely flawless in his technique and gives such an emotive performance. His heart and soul pour through his violin strings and create the most sublime music. Sibelius himself would cry if he heard this concerto performance. This is the very best of humanity on display. What a gift!! Thank you Ray. You are a treasure.
the fact that we all have the score including the conductor but he is standing with nothing makes us understand how prepared he is as a person and as a violinist
Even I just watched you on TH-cam, I feel that I'm there, nurturing and being touched by how you play your violin.. it refreshes and makes me feel that my soul is sending to heaven...😊❤❤
Amazing!👍👍👍I really liked the expressiveness that Ray Chen had in the beginning and the phrasing that he had in the fast runs in the third movement. I especially liked the cadenza, which was really unique and precise!
This performance is absolutely sublime. I've heard so many versions of this piece -and there are quite a few good ones out there - yet I keep coming back to this one. To me it's simply the best combination of technique, phrasing, musicality, orchestral balance, acoustics, down to the recording direction. Heck, even the audience managed to hold its applause between movements and keep the usual coughing to a minimum!

Bless you. I wish people put this in their video descriptions.
Thank you!!!

Idk how he can express that much romanticism and fantasy...sometimes it’s like listening the violin itself crying, getting angry or falling in love...
Ray Chen is proof that those who consider classical music a language without words are very wrong: Ray's violin SPEAKS and speaks a language everyone can understand.
I definitely love him.
THIS is what I love about classical music. We all hear the same. 😍🤍🤍🤍🤍
I don’t understand why Ray doesn’t have millions of subscribers. I could listen to him all day.
Best cencerto ever
~Eddy Chen (2017)
I cannot stop listening to those double stops at 13:35. They sound amazing!!!
Well, it sure looks cool when he fakes it with a smile, but I prefer playing in tune.
The octaves aren't.
@@martinszemberg-goldgraber8772 he's going for Sterns approach, pushing one of the notes slightly high (so you hear them more clearly) he may be pushing it slightly though..
I personally enjoy this version's pitch of the top note in that segment, its pushed higher than the version i watched of stern's interpretation, but its good.
@@martinszemberg-goldgraber8772 well I'm sure a low life like you couldn't play an octave without your *viola* screaming for help
Rays tone is far superior to many other violinists. It’s breath taking to hear. He’s just magnificent. That violin must cost a fortune.

I Love His Emotions And His Face.
Don’t Give Up Ray!
Now that's how you let a Stradivarius sing! Well done Ray Chen.
I LOVE the crescendos starting 27:02! He makes the movement sound so romantic.
This cellist ist staring straight into my soul
The only reason I listen to this concerto are those double stops at 13:46 and 4:27
Then listen to 21:30 too
lawrence wei omg I just listened to them and it sounds like heaven
Luiz Guilherme there are no double stops at 21:30
@@kikimeow5491 I know ,but for me It's the reason why I listen to this concerto
Same, they're just so great
I like Ray's third movement interpretation the most!
4:25 so beautiful, a stunning performance.
I'm learning to compose and when I'm down this reminds me why I love music.
Hey mate, fellow composer here-I wish you the best on learning composition!
Remember, you do not have to be great immediately-greatness takes time like fine wine.
I have listened to countless recordings, and no one plays the best part of the concerto the way Ray does at 13:20. Absolutely gorgeous!
I know I'm so late to this boat, but I've listened to Hilary Hahn, Vengerov, and Itzhak Perlman's renditions of this and Ray's is still my favorite. Listen to it multiple times a day
4:23 ngl im kinda crying
😢
Fr I’m deeply touched
Seven years later and I still listen to it as much as I did, absolutely my favorite interpretation of The Sibelius Concerto.
The BEST Sibelius violin concerto I have heard!!!!
Jean Sibelius she meant the best that she heard from any violinist she heard so fat
Hilary Hahn
canzo0378 i never though i would find this side of the music community both of you grow up and stop being so disrespectful, just enjoy the music
It’s funny how everybody watches this after his comment on eddys
Blame TH-cam. It was the algorithm's idea.
Not everybody :)
People who already knew about good classical music watched this video first, and a handful wouldn't have watched TwoSet's at all.
But I think it's a normal thing and it doesn't necessarily mean you are a bad teacher or TwoSet is evil :D
As you have mentioned, they are children and they might find understanding sarcasm and jokes difficult.
Of course it's not😂
Besides, the passive aggressive remark about not even being considered to join an ensemble if you mention TwoSet too much, is a little weird?
Bravo!
I truly believe 3:49-5:33 is one most beautiful moments is classical music history
That final note and up-bow at 32:25 is just impeccable and so powerful. Love the principal cellist's smile right after too :)
Listening to this eight years after and I have to say, I'm amazed by this jaw-dropping performance! I'm trying to come up with smart sounding words to describe what I've just witnessed, but I have no words.
I even feel that this video is better than his recent performance.
this is the best recording of sibelius out there, he really makes that violin sing
What incredible tone this man has.
He is a student of Rosand after all!
Ray Chen is a beast. Definitely a star in his era.
*After Heifetz, Menuhin, Perlman, Vengerov... *
*A new big violin artist is coming! He' s Ray Chen.*

surprisingly i feel Ray's interpretation has more power than Maxim. And that's a sentence I never thought I'd use
Tanner Hoyt (
This interpretation feels really jerky, especially compared to Vengerov's silky smooth rendition. Honestly, I find this interpretation by Chen absolutely revolting. I do like his other performances though.
Tanner Hoyt Power there is, much more than needed. Enough to make your ears bleed.
I disagree. The Vengerov's interpretation is more transcendental, beautiful and elegant.
@@aaron5098 thats kind of rude but i do agree haha just a lot more politely worded😅
真出色的藝術家,即使八年後欣賞,仍如此美妙及震撼….🎹
This must be the 1000th time I listen to this rendition and it is gets better every time.
While listening, I was writing down math notes, in particular, the word "Expression." After drifting off for but a second to this piece, I looked down and noticed I had instead written "Experience." And yet, this seems to be both of these, a beautiful expression of what could only be described as an experience...
No other violinists’ playing has quite touched me or kept my attention like Ray’s. What magnificent playing. Bravo!
This orchestra by the conductor performed exquisitely
I love that he has the perfect vibrato. It really is magical when he performs.
Beautifully worded! Change your namesake to match them.
Ray Chen is a man of discipline, patience and perseverance. This is why he reached the top. He is one of the great violinists of the world because of his determination and hard work. Keep it up, Ray.!!! 👏👍🎉
Bravo, Mr. Chen! I am deeply moved and inspired by your stellar rendition of this concerto. Congratulations and thank you! :)
A few hours ago, I got to see Ray Chen perform this! For my first concert, I think it was amazing! Well done!
By far my favorite recording of Sibelius right here.
It's 3:37 am
after every movement that starts I tell myself: "After this movement I'm gonna sleep, you can watch the rest tomorrow"
guess what
I watched the whole thing in 1 go anyway
cause who needs sleep anyway
Me too , every night is the same thing
3:24 am for me rn, I should probably go to sleep.
@@fladimo9594 this is more important than sleep
You can do better: I just finished watching this + Tchaikovsky at 5 am and I'm not regretting it (yet)
I couldn't fall back asleep at 4:30am, and I ended up doing a survey of the different performances of Sibelius. Maxim is a great one. I think I may prefer it.
I know ray is probably not gonna read this but just let me say, ur playing brings me joy and happiness. thank you so much
Whoever is here, we are so lucky.. we get to experience this .. we get to feel complicated feelings of ecstasy ❤️
He definitely deserves more recognition! Just see how powerful his playing is and how amazing the interpretation is
Let's all be honest, this is the best recording of the sibelius concerto.
Legends said men start to cry at 4:21
I can't describe what I felt listenning to this masterpiece.

I feel that the violinist with this melody transmits too many feelings, whenever I listen to it I feel a sense of nostalgia and sadness but it is a beautiful melody.
15:33 the way he he nailed those harmonics is absolutely insane
Good grief. Ray, you own that stage and that concerto. OUTSTANDING performance!
I’ve listened to the sibelius violin concerto before but I’ve never been so emotionally moved as when I heard Ray play it! Wonderful work! This is truly incredible.
A difficult concerto to play well. He did it so beautifully. Yes, those double stopping are amazing!
Even someone with a heart of stone would be moved by this performance. Your gentle demeanor is a showcase of your self control.
I think Ray's interpretation of the Sibelius violin concerto brings out the wilderness like no one else.
Best interpretation I've heard so far
I am surprised by the amount of views and likes, Ray definitely deserves more
Almost every time I hear you play, I involuntarily smile!
Thank you so much as always for the beautiful music!!🎶😌
I am breathless and my eyes have tears... are there words for this feeling? I am not sure but there is something I am certain about: I was moved beyond any words that exist. Thank you, Ray....
:)

That cadenza😮
This is obviously the best version in TH-cam
4:25 it’s so beautiful 🤩 ❤️
This is an expression of power, determination and endurance.
I always try to think about what each piece sounds like.
Thanks to TwoSet for giving me an appreciation. What mastery Mr Chen has.
