Very nice video its really helpful, but what I want to know is how to make sure that your solder don't attach two points together , and if that happens what you should do.

Wicked videos, they've been super helpful. I have a question and Im not really expecting an answer, just hoping.. My USB A connectors that just came in have the connector pins on the same side as the solder points. Would this mean I'd need to solder them backwards?

Just a tip - if you want to expose more wire, you can use "liquid electrical tape" to "paint" over exposed areas and electrically isolate them safely.
Finally finished my first cable! took way longer than im willing to admit, burned my hand a few times, but it was totally worth it! thank you for getting me into the hobby!

Hey Josh. I just wanted to thank you for the great videos. I just made my first custom cable today. It's gunmetal grey with carbon techflex and a tungsten colored cerekote GX16 connector. The mini USB is a bit more tricky than USB C but I took my time and ended up getting great results. i'll do my coil tomorrow using a 3/4" dowel. Hopefully it turns out similar to yours! Gotta keep that pressure on! haha

Also, the shield is usually folded back onto the cable jacket before the prongs are crimped. This causes the USB shell to be connected to shield to help prevent any noise interferences. Mostly for more industrial environments, but yea

I'm glad I found your channel man. I just got here so maybe I haven't found it yet, but I'm trying to learn how to connect/soldier a usb-c to a micro USB cable. I have modified a Bluetooth speaker, which was two tweeters, to now power those tweeters plus two mids and one 8" sub. I paralleled some 18650s and soldiered them together for longer juice-time, but the sub just drains it, despite having a bank of six 18650s in parallel. So I want to connect a bigass power bank and I'll need a usb-c for the bank and a micro usb for the Bluetooth speaker. It's not amazing, but it is a good system for my shed in the backyard. Plus, I had all the stuff laying around so I haven't spent a nickle on it, excluding the electricity used to soldier everything together.

Sounds like a fun project! Forgive me if you're already familiar with this topic, I just want to make sure you're familiar with the differences in IMR, ICR & INR cells as well as how to determine if the cells are protected or not. Things can go quite badly when a cell is a bad match for the type of work it's being asked to do.

Hey great video! I have a USB-C female wire that I would like to solder to a USB 2.0 circuit board. The USB-C wire has what looks like several separate cables within it and I can't really distinguish which ones need to be soldered to the board.

Hey man, these videos are gold! Id bought so much cable making stuff but just couldn't do the soldering stuff. If im buying a crimping tool, is there one you'd recommend, like which sizes it being able to strip - the ones im looking at will do 0.75 - 6mm, but it's a cheap one..maybe a more specialst one would work better?

I would suggest some heatshrink over the inner solder places, for shortening protection.
This video was awesome, thank you. I needed the color configuration for where to solder. Question though. I had a thicker solder and was not as precise so they are a little thick at connection points. The cord works and charges, but is this a possible risk for fire? Or will a short just burn it out if it occurs?
The prongs on the USB shell should be crimped onto the cable jacket. The prongs actually dig into the cable jacket, and after they are crimped, the crimp height should be measured to ensure a good crimp. The purpose of the crimp is to alleviate any stress on the conductors when the cable is tugged or pulled--increasing the cables tensile force.
Could you just heat shrink over the connection without using the squarish housing for a slimmer cable?

Maybe it goes left 2 right - 5:44 / RED-WHITE-GREEN-BLACK, (Vcc,D-,D+,ID, Ground on metal plate) - I saw several connectors soldiered by that order.
This video is opposite from ISO standards for micro USB connection.

Hey just wanted to let you know you have some wires in the wrong places for the mini USB. The green wire is actually the D+ and it goes on bottom middle pin and the white is the D- and it goes on the top right pin. So you got the location of the data in and data out right but the colors are wrong. It probably wouldn't matter if you are just making a cable. The only reason I found this out is because I'm making an Ergodox and had to make a USB header to go from the Teensy to the PCB and ended up putting them in the wrong place based off the color. Hope this helps. Thanks for making the tutorial it was a huge help!
I was trying to replace the mini USB connector on an already made cable but I couldn't get the keyboard to turn on when I was done. I chalked it up to my poor soldering causing a short. Would switching the data cables like Josh does (and what I did) prevent the board from powering on?
Thanks for this. Can I solder a mini USB connector into the port on a device or will that not work? It's too loose and keeps falling out. I want to secure it.
Here's a good question: can you take a USB-C connector (cable end, like your first one here) and, using a suitable voltage/amp wall charger (for a chromebook, so power isn't too high), solder the type C connector to the charger cable? Basically changing the barrel type plug to a C. Thank you.

maybe i did the micro usb wrong this time, when i see your vid, that makes me realize that the red cable going to the wrong pin of the usb,,is it backwards from the USB-c? because my usb-c just works fine. Thx for the vid.

Hey Josh, did my first cable build yesterday and went terribly wrong somehow. Must have soldered my contacts poorly (first time with a solder) and my ducky is fried... Anything I can use to test out my cables prior to risking my keyboard? I was looking for a cheap keyboard with usb c connections to test but can't find anything. Thanks!
My usb-a cable has a 5th (plain; without isolation) wire. It that ground and has to connected on the metal part of the connector?
Are other PCBs picky when it comes to the color coding of the usb cable?
Can you do a USB 3.0 cable build, I think there's 8 conductor's in a usb 3.0.compatable cable.

hey so I got like a broken repeater in a 30 meter long USB3 cable. I luckily was able to remove the section with the repeater, and shorten the cable by 5 meters, which hopefully won't be an issue. Yet now I've got this 5 meter cable going on, which doesn't have 4 but 8 cables, excluding the earth cable. This is of course cabling for the repeaters. And now I'm wondering whether I could get USB plugs which are active, so I would not lose this active capability of the cable I've got. Do you happen to know what to look for? I can't seem to find any active USB plugs.

my usb c cable also has a blue wire (it has a total of 5 wires: red, black, white, green and blue) what do I do with the blue cable?
You swapped the D+ and D- lines... While it will usually work, it could cause some problems with communication loss.

What temperature do you use with your iron?
They should have made the RJ45 connector the standard for USB3 with Cat6 FTP cable. Would have made a lot easier for custom cable making.

I’m having a slight problem. When I try to solder the wire to the connector I get and wire insulation melting. It helped to lower my temp but I still somehow get the issue.
Any suggestions?
Heya thanks for watching and trying out for yourself!
Here's a few things I can think of
1) Tin your connectors and your explosed wires to ensure that heat is only applied for as minimal as time as required. (I try to be as quick and precise as possible as I myself have also ran into the same melting issue you are having so many times)
2) If you are using metal tweezers, i'd try to grab onto the wire a little farther if possible as it will be likely retaining heat and melting your wire insulation faster
3) You could try using some solder flux when solder your connections, I use to do when I first started and I think it made the solder melting process a bit smoother.

Okay but what about usb-c that has 2 pads GRD & V on one side and six pads on the other. A6 & A7 seem to be data points according to the interwebs but it only sends power, no data if I say plug it in to a kb versus plugged into my phone juice runs fine. Yes, the joints are clean. I just don't know what the deal is with the six pad b-side.

Is it possible that my ground wire is in white colour? I've cut my USB-A becouse wire broke just behind the tip and in tips crossection just behind metal it was: RED, GREEN, BLACK, WHITE. I soldered it as it was, but after i've watched your tutorial i'ma afraid that i'll burn my PC...
Quick question. Is there a reason why heatshrink could interfere with the soldering points? I bought my first cable with Aviator connectors and it didn't really work. It kept disconnecting etc. I finally gave in to check the solder points and cut open the heat shrink. Solder points were fine and nothing interfered with them. Ever since I cut the shrink open it's been working flawlessly.
Inside the aviation type connector? Well, most of the cheap Chinese aviation type connectors are pure junk. On the opposite side, the real brand name aviation type connectors are ridiculously expensive. That's what you get when you go Form over Function... Looking like something doesn't mean functioning like it...
The heatshrink itself can't do anything, unless it's wrong size / length on the wrong place. It either pulls, stiffens or bends the pins. Which is possible only in a junk connector...
I can't understand the idea of the whole "fancy cable movement" - fancy outside, junk inside. Just get a proven industry standard XLR connector. Neutrik are German made, Amphenol are US made.

i do have a question, if you do have a shielded cable(with some alumilium foil, and copper wire for exemple, would you need to solder it with the black cable aswell??? so that any interference getting to the GND?
That's actually a great question.
From my knowledge Signal Ground (from input to output) should be kept isolated from the Chasis Ground (bascially the shield and metal shell used to plug in each side of the connection).
The shielding in this case protects the internal conductors from external electrical noise and prevents the RF signals from leaking out.
From my knowledge the best practice is to connect (or even solder) the shield to the connector metal shell.
Then again, I failed a bunch of circuits classes so I could also be wrong here :)

I was wondering where you could find bulk cable parts like:
28awg wire, techflex, and heat shrink
eBay and Aliexpress are full of these.
And this is not genuine techflex, since it's expensive.
To find it, you can just use something like these keywords - "Braided PET Expandable Sleeving Cable Wire Sheath".

The green and white wires are a twisted pair, and it should work either way as long as it's consistent on both ends. It was a habit I picked up when I first started and I haven't been able to go back since.
are there anything u hate doing in building cables like parts u dont like working with
lol after making a few cables I would imagine the most annoying part is the sleeving with paracord/techflex because it takes up a lot of time
I would say working with the usb-mini cables is not very fun, but in general with any part of the process having to do the same thing hundreds of time gets less enjoyable. This is why I always like to try new things to keep things fresh. :)
