That’s amazing, when you pulled it out to dry ground, when you stopped, the Oliver pushed down and settled in the mud, I surprised those big tires were sinking in that mud sitting there with not running not moving, good job, thanks BigAl.
Every once in awhile I go back and look at this video. Makes me laugh at how you got Herman stuck, it looks nearly impossible to do but I’ll give you credit, you did it GOOD.
Love Herman! When I was a kid one of the local farmers had a 4 wheel drive 1900 and 1800. Back then they called them four wheel drive. I drove the 1900 a few times. It was so loud. Wow what a show! I was rocking with you trying to get him out. Great job of backing!
my dad used to have dual 23.1 X 34's R2's on the rear of the 1900 and pulled a 10 foot case disc that had the back end would be nearly 5 ' off the ground when raised. it is how he opened the marsh up every spring. the Case was less than 1/2 the weight of your Olly
Just think of when this happened when this tractor was new. It was the biggest tractor around at the time and if your neighbor didn't happen own a versatile well your going to be rockin till you get a hole 10 ft deep!
Ahh, Nostalgia.... Bring back a similar scene in North Texas in the early 80s. I was running our 1850 pulling a 4 bottom breaker turning an unused pasture into a field. Was going along fine until I drove over a warren of some sorts. Only took a moment for me to bury that tractor to it's belly. Dad had to come pull me out with the 2-85 (which had duals). That tandem also brings back a lot of memories. Looks almost exactly like the one we used to have.
That Oliver Guy - Chris Losey I think you’re absolutely correct though. Once those big tires fill up with mud the tractor can’t crawl up out of the hole. There was a couple times where I thought you were coming out on its own for sure. I also admire what a good operator you are, you know when it’s time to say when instead of breaking things
we had similar ground after getting stuck every year a dragline and 2000.00 we had a nice pond and then enjoyed that ground for the last 40 years my sons and grand son enjoy it now!!
Doesn’t matter what tractor you have they all get stuck. The bigger the tractor the bigger they’re stuck too. Always a pain when you have to unhook what you’re pulling to get out. But when you’re by yourself I’ve used a cedar rail underneath the tractor and chained to the rear wheels. Works good. But you have to take it slow.
I farmed for 20 years with a 1950 cockshutt as my main tractor. It had lots of power if you kept the revs up. The Detroit is great for pulling, but is famous for turning diesel fuel into noise while making HP. Now my favorite word is What?
Hopefully that corner dries out for you so that you can get it planted Chris. At least you had a freshly rebuilt 4-225 to pull Herman out with! Cheers!
Just subscribed when I found your channel from a recommendation list as I am a fan of old equipment such as Herman and also when I saw your backing skills. As a trucker of 25 years I am also impressed with your backing skills with 2 attachments on the back of your 2nd tractor. Love the roar Herman's Detroit makes when you have it up-to working rpm's. Reminds me of an old Mack sidewinder that I learned to drive a truck as the owner of the truck replaced the old mack engine with an old Detroit. Enjoyed the video.
Thanks Chris, Nice ya still have a bigger back up in the shed in such cases. BTW, nice job backing a double hitch out of the shed. Mud sucks. Possibly need a few strings of tile in them low areas.
Having an old tractor with FWD and balloon tires getting stuck is fun having a bigger tractor to pull it out easily is even funner. Enjoyed it from here.
Stay away from the wet spots, higher gear will get you through the mud a little easier, usually, anyway in your case I guess not, kool 55 I have one also 1958 or59, 4 cylinder, gas front end loader and a 3 point hitch on the back ,nice job ,stuck is stuck, thanks BigAl California.
Liked that smooth pull. When the back of the tractor is stuck and you are pulling from the front with only a 50 year old cast iron cradle between you don't to be jerking.
My father had an Oliver 1900 with the screaming Jimmy I swear it could pull a mountain sadly just say my father and the screaming Jimmy have passed on, we always farmed with Ollie's, great to see Herman still running
Well it was fun while it lasted lol I have had Terra Gators stuck enough to know big tires don't make much difference lol … I have spots that have been too wet to farm for the last 3 years
At least you had the option of hydraulic lift. When I was a kid dissing on a JD 530 our drag disk only had manual angle adjustment. In the creek bottoms we worked you really had to keep a look at the dirt and keep a long chain to pull the disk out.
Yeah i have an old Killefer disc i pull with my 520. The disc needs some serious repair but i dont do much discing anymore that dads gone. Pretty good condition considering gramps tripped on the disc in the woods hunting. And yes i do mean he literally tripped on it. Dad gramps and uncle and me when 10ish went back with shovels chains and the 520 with the boom pole and dug it out
The change in color of that soil that close to the surface is pretty wild ! You say the top is peat ? Then is the next layer clay so it doesn't drain? Like your attitude , well funs over let's do something real !!! Love Herman for all the reasons people love big tires and loud motors !!!
The top is muck, the bottom is peat, which is plant matter that hasn't decomposed completely. My guess is that there is a layer of clay below the peat, holding the water. Plus there is a county drain that isn't working the best that keeps the water level up.
Mr losey I think you need to give us a equipment tour this summer when your not busy cause we would like to see your whole farm and all of the equipment, thanks
Reminds me of the time my uncle, after finishing moldboard plowing, decided to run the tractor and plow over an area where a sewer line was installed over the winter. He found an air pocket, and buried the Deere 4240. Took both our 4020 and 2750 to pull it out, then had to turn around and go back over the same spot to get out of that area. We found three air pockets that year, two with the 4240, and one with a loaded wagon of corn silage..........
Hey ,Chris... There are reasons for winged discs... Same as long sprayer booms and wide spin spreaders😎😁😉 It's to keep your tires out of the soft spots!!!! The chain before you get stuck... Sometimes works, drop the implement float out, chain up.. Thanks for the video 😎🤣😂👍👍

Not always. Big tires float good, but once they sink they are much much worse. Wider the tire the more area you are trying to get back up on top of the ground and more area to dig out. A narrow tire doesn't float well but doesn't get stuck near as easy. Not to mention the suction the mud has is much greater on a wider tire.
Oh Mannie, Shoot or Fire that Driver! .... but , look, he redeems himself - shows just how soft that soil is, yet the Artic can draw it all out No Problems- just time and patience - and we've ALL been there, trying to speed things up in a Late wet spring. Some comments about tall narrow ties, that only works if the mud has a bottom less than half the hight of the tires. Some areas around hear the bottom is 20 feet down. We nearly lost a caterpillar (it sank till the hood and roll bar was all that would be seen)in a soft spot. Had to use an excavator to literally dig it out.
Everytime you break traction with excessive torque you just dig it in more although you almost got out. Wonder if chains on front tires might have given you just enough to climb out?
I loved my 1950-2wheel drive though. Broke the left year axle clean off at housing. Probably from duels over time. Lost a lot of my hearing from that Detroit😂.
I was thinking you could have pulled the disc with the chain and swang around the wet spot with the tractor and drug the disc through the wet spot. Looks like a good place for some tile work.
Im-Press-Ive! Not only did you manage to get Herman stuck.. TWICE! But the backing skills with the disk AND packer AND with an articulated tractor were awesome! Great video! Thanks for sharing! Wonder if/how bad Herman would have gotten stuck if it had regular ag tires on there.. would it have just dug a hole to China?
Good question. The peat seemed fairly solid underneath, tall narrow tires might have bit in and gone through, but peat probably isn't that solid... Back in my younger mud boggin days the trucks that got stuck the worst were the ones with the most aggressive tread. They'd dig down too fast. Once you get pushing that wall of mud ahead of the tires, things go downhill fast. Somewhere is a Vhs tape of a $300 Escort that went places some of the mud trucks wouldn't. Speed conquers all!
Flotation tires are like a boat. They are great for staying up on the surface but are lousy as a submarine. I was sitting here lunging to help you get back upon the surface.
why aren't there more comments saying, when your loosing traction, raise the disc..?? just because it can go all the way down, doesn't mean you'll make it through like that..
I'm most impressed with your backing ability with the disc/packet combo.
Yeah thats pretty impressive
