  • I believe this is my first video demonstrating our International moldboard plow. We plowed two hayfields on Saturday that we are hopefully going to plant sudangrass in. Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching!

    My grandfather owned a dairy farm parents were brought up on farms but they never Farm themselves. I believe it's in my blood to be a farmer because I personally would love nothing else better than to be out in those fields. Working from home instead of being on the highway in rush hour traffic every day. As a young boy I spent many hours out in the fields with my grandfather plowing baling hay seating and it was hard work but I loved every minute of it. Sure lots of my friends and family said buy a farm but to start from scratch seems like an Impossible Dream plus the hard times the farmers have these days it's just going to be a dream. God bless the farmers without them in this day and age we would starve and that's why they deserved more help from our government.

    Hey guys, good to see you finally got comments enabled on your videos! Engaging tractor nerd mode here, that's an IH 550 plow which was originally a 5 bottom. Obviously the rear bottom was removed to reduce it to 4 so now it's a 540 "in spirit." Looks like the 856 barely even notices it, could easily handle 5, possibly even 6 bottoms in that ground. I'm not a big fan of pulling the guts out of 50 year old equipment if you don't have to, so I'd call it a perfect match.

  • @Ashcrash82

    Grew up on a mostly IH farm, but we must have had much tougher ground. We only plowed the terraces to keep them up, so we had a 4-16 plow. Our 856 could barely pull it fast enough to keep the soil rolling. One year Dad tried to use our 706, and that was the beginning of the end for it. We had bought it somewhat recently under the impression it had been overhauled; turns out, it wasn't and had been band-aided together to sell it. That was too bad, I really liked that 706. Later we replaced the 856 with a 1456 that was turned up a little, what a difference. Could pull that plow in HI 1st all day. Could also pull the neighbors V-Ripper with all 7 shanks in the ground 20+ inches deep, as long as we put all the weights we had on the front.

    About 45 years ago, a friend bought a 40 acre farm 45 miles from my small farm. He asked if I could load up my old Farmall H and 2 bottom plow and plow one of his fields. I agreed. When I was finished plowing, I noticed that my wallet was no longer in my back pocket. Well, that's the end of that wallet. Turned under for sure. About 10 years later I got a call from my friend. He had bought his own tractor and when plowing the same field, he turned up my wallet. What are the odds? Everything in the wallet was in pretty good shape.

    Nice video, a good job your plow is set right the points look sharp smooth plowing. Growing up the largest plow we had was a Massey Ferguson 4.16's moldbold plow pulled behind a Massey Ferguson 285. Today I have the same plow MF 4.16's pulled behind a 1990 Massey Ferguson 3070. I believe my MF 3070 could handle a 5.16's moldboard plow in the sod ground we have around here with no problem. Which some is packed tight clay. I always enjoy plowing. Your International sounds and did good. My Grandpa always had Internationals. My dad had Massey Ferguson's.

    My grandparents had a farm years ago. We had a IH 656 with a IH 540 plow chief 4-14. Could only plow about 1 acre an hour spent a long time on that old tractor. A few years later I was interviewing for a job on a large scale dairy operation the owner asked how many acres I had plowed I told him approximately 120 he said that just one field on his farm. Then I told him what I was using and how slow we had to go per my grandfather instructions. His eyes lit up and I got the job. He said old school is the best training possible. I worked there for 2 years before he sold the farm

    Not a rut - it is called a furrow. An 856 normally pulls a 5 bottom and in some soils it would pull a 6. I have seen one pulling a 4 bottom but that was in Black River Gumbo soil. That ground would make any tractor say TOO MUCH - TOO MUCH! You can put a 5th bottom back on the rear of the frame you could find one laying around.

    Can you PLEASE tell me the origin of your farms name? I was raised on a Jersey farm in VT.. Really "Miss" the "Girls".. GOO I.H. !😊

    • @KeithFinkFamilyFarm
      @KeithFinkFamilyFarm  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although our dairy farm has been in the family since 1890, it didn't have its official name (Organ Echoes Dairy) until the very early 1970s when my dad gave it that moniker. As a kid, dad taught himself how to play the organ. He has been a church organist ever since. Of course, dad had an organ in the living room and would play very early in the morning and throughout the day when he was taking a break from the farm. He played loudly and in the pleasant weather months when the windows were open we (and the neighbors) could hear organ music echoing off the surrounding hills. It was probably a comment from a family member or a neighbor about the echoing organ music that caused him to give that name to the farm. Dad has long since retired from the farm and now lives in town, he's approaching 90 years old but he still has an organ in the house and he still plays almost weekly in church.
      Where was your farm in VT? Earlier this year Laura and I visited VT and stopped in at the Billings Farm and visited with their Jerseys.
      Keith-

      Ha! Yes, sorry, seems like we've gone away. Still here, farming as usual. Just very busy. Hank is the one that is most often behind the TH-cam camera and he works in town full time now, so his filming opportunities are somewhat limited to evening milking time. Everyone else is busy this week with our county fair but maybe I can persuade someone to film an update next week.

    It seems strange to hear the plow is turning "dirt" over. My dad always said dirt is what you find under the sofa or bed, this is soil and it ani't dirty!"
