A video that matches so many of the jobs I’m doing now we’re into May here in East Yorkshire - sowing Crown Prince pumpkins, zucchini (green, alfresco, yellow and Romano), pricking out cosmos etc. Favourite May jobs: potting on the tomatoes in the greenhouse into final tubs, and planting out the sweetcorn - always a sense the season has really got going once that is done. Thanks for sharing your plot and activities.

Hi there rose, Doesn't feel much like spring here as down to 2 the night before so thing growing very slowly as even daytime is struggling to get above 15, coldest spring since I move here 4 years ago, but they say will arm up next week reaching the low 80's which make things move a bit. Have had my first spuds and carrots , but not big enough, but like to buy force fed tasteless rubbish from the shop when in a self sufficient mode. If the weather improves then hope to pick peas, Rasps and Brambles before the month is out. At least most of my citrus is in flower and toms flowering on second truss, but at least 2 weeks behind other years due to the cold weather coming down from the Arctic.

hey Maiju, have you ever started courgettes and pumpkins earlier than May? I actually started mine end of March. the seed packet says indoor sowing can start from March. I now wonder if they do well. my first year growing, so a lot of it will be an experiment I suppose :). all the best!

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Justina, experimenting is the perfect way to learn 😊💚🌿
If you're planning to grow your pumpkins outside, then starting them end of April or otherwise May is better, as pumpkins are hungry plants and grow relatively quickly. If you have a large polytunnel though then you could chance starting your seeds in March as you might be able to plant them in the tunnel already in May, as for outdoor growing you wouldn't plant them until June. If you now have plants and are planning growing outside, you might want to pot them up to a larger pot, to make sure they don't go hungry... Otherwise keep them in a frost free location 😊💚🌿
and if you're any bit worried, sow another 1 or 2 spare seeds now too 😊💚🌿

Are biting bugs a problem? Where I live (New Brunswick, Canada), this time of year there are swarms of black flies that will eat you alive. It makes gardening very difficult and unpleasant. Just wondering how bad it is where you live.

      Hello to Canada 🇨🇦 🙌
We have midges, ....tiny biting insects that are so small, yet the bite is strong
Also, I'm allergic to their bites, and my skin reacts to them.... This time of the year is the worst, the month of May and early June...its the females that are blood thirsty. So gardening on those days is only possible if it is fully sunny 🌞 or it is breezy as they like shade and damp and can not fly strong enough for through the wind. No gardening before 10am or past 8pm, eventhoug it might be dry and otherwise pleasant 💚🌿

Oh wow! That green roof is amazing! I love the diversity of the succulent types and creepers.
    Love Spuds. What breed is?
I've heard that you are the Queen of Oca! Are they similar to sweet potatoes and yams in growing variety?
I have terrible brainfog and dyslexia and grew up with both imperial and metric. In my head i know how big a thing is but how i chose to say is another. I cut off at 24 inches in conversion. Less if we are talking babies age, heights and weights. I still use feet and inches for height for adults. I still have trouble with some of the old measurements like acres and ordering skips per yard/ 90cm ish.
Yes i have also seen some germinations issues here in London too. Our heating has been rarely started by the thermostat but we have increased humidity. Also the warm temps and increased cloud cover from el nino hasn't helped with the lack of sunshine. Fingers crossed that your beans will be ok.
I am going to try one last time, i think, with sowing some squash and direct sowing some beans and sweetcorn.
Hopefully we can finish off our new tomato trellis this weekend and the tomatoes out next week. Going to reverse our planting to see if the bigger tomatoes benefit from being the the front row, instead of the smaller varieties like cherry.
Off topic but you've probably heard this before but i really love your accent! Have you thought about audio books for children? I am really into audio sounds and regional accents from around the world. Have you lived in another place?
    Take care Maiju!

😃 Hello, and thank you for such a wonderful comment 😊💚🌿
Spuds is a Boxer and Sheepdog mix, a pure love story puppy 😂🥰 and has been a wonderful companion for many years in the garden 🥰
The Oca thing sounds like someone has been listening to Danny 😂😂 Texture wise, when cooked, they're much lighter and perhaps closer to a parsnip texture, not creamy like sweet potatoes.
Haha, I'm not sure what my brain was doing when talking about the Oca planting, between the Jerusalem Artichokes and measurements 😂
Accent wise, I'm native to Estonia, but Irish co.Kerry accent is quite strong, so mine is a twang of Kerry accent really 😊
it should be getting warmer next week, so we will all be busy then! Happy gardening and best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿
