Our home garden in a windy South-West of Ireland, County Kerry.
New videos every week on Thursdays at 7 pm (GMT) on all of our gardening mishaps and triumphs.
Join me, Maiju and our ever-energetic pooch, as we try to grow organic veggies, flowers, fruit and berries, while sharing all the hints and tips along the way. Our family is small, free time from busy work-school lives even smaller, but the wish to create a private oasis for recreational therapy and supporting gardening for mental health is greater. Finding balance in-between, a forever goal :)
Love to share it with you and hope you will enjoy it too! :)

How I'm preparing the garden for winter...Resourceful way to fill NEW RAISED BEDS | What I'm growing
November is a great month to clear the garden from old vegetation, plant some winter hardy veggies or just for a general pottering in the garden when weather permits 😊💚🌿
This is another slightly longer episode as I had a couple of days to spend in the garden filling up the second of the new metal raised beds/planters, planting over-winter broad beans and onions, plus an update on the aftermath of Storm Ashley.
Still no garlic in the ground yet, but soon...very soon 😀
I hope you'll enjoy it, and if you do, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe for all the latest updates.

Autumnal Irish Vegetable Garden in October | Organic Gardening

A busy day in the garden, and nothing makes me happier than to garden in semi-sunny weather. I'm playing a bit of catch-up, but mainly prepping the garden before our 1st winter storm ''Ashley'' arrives. I have added new planters and filling them will be an ongoing job throughout the winter, mainly due to their size. Cleared out the pumpkin beds and harvested potatoes, beetroot and the largest c...

Originally I had hoped it wouldn't come to this, but as the months passed by and the clematis kept growing, but the pergola still has not been fixed. Hopefully this will make fixing the pergola damage easier and the clematis will eventually grow back. Also harvested some Cel...

Amazing amount of work completed! 👏🏻 I love this time of year for giving us more time to get on with those bigger jobs! Your garden is beautiful in every season! 😍🍂
Thanks a million 😊💚🌿That's so kind of you 🥰 I'm really looking forward to spring to get the garden under control again, but for now I'm pleased that I can take it a little easier going into winter 😍
@ absolutely. Every season has its beauty 😊🪴
Gorgeous video.Thanks .
Thank you very much. It's really kind of you 😊💚🌿
Enjoyed with envy as always. Although you’re tidying up you also have lots alive in contrast to our zone 4ish gardens. Our garden is well put to bed here in Edmonton, AB. Fall weather is definitely a little longer in the past couple of years so I may need to add a few more plants/shrubs that we can enjoy for longer than we had been used to. Enjoy your beautiful Autumn colours-perhaps the changes with your pergola allows more light & views as well.
Hi, Breda and greetings to CA! 😀 Our cold weather is only arriving now, this week is close to 0C and I am tempted to start ''putting the garden to bed'' for winter rather than continuously plan growing in there 😊💚🌿 Looking forward to getting the pergola finished, the sheeting should arrive tomorrow 🤞 Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿
You have a lot going on for the winter. Many of us just take a break. Re trellis roof. I had same experience in that I planted a grape vine. It grew very well was productive and then attracted all kinds of critters - raccoons and possibly opossums one of which was killed by something else - just steps from my bedroom! So I pulled that all out. I currently have a climbing rose on one side which is going to be pruned. I also use morning glory on other trellis pillar which is away from the house. It being an annual, it is v decorative and productive but dies out in winter.
Oh gosh, decorative plants definitely seem to overweigh edibles in those situations... I like the idea of Rose and Clematis mix on the trellis. Thank you for your lovely comment, have a great week! 😊💚🌿
Start your rotation with spuds as they clean the ground for the next crop. Over winter onions are fine, usual the Japanese, but like all onions if they get too much water they bolt. I used 6mm polycarb, on my greenhouse and worked very well and saw a very big reduction in gas use and much earlier cropping as could maintain the night temp, better for less so go speedy growth. Always keep them in the bottom of the fridge for next year then you don't have to buy as they keep years in the fridge. I have a good second crop of carrots from 6 year old seed as I sow what is needed , then put back in the fridge saves a lot on money bulk buying.
Hi Robert, How is all in Portugal? I'll see how I get on with the onions, not sure what's best for us in the way we eat. In the end it might just be easier to buy them from the shop. I have used potatoes in the ground before, just found the buckets much easier, especially when it comes to dealing with diseases. They are a great ground clearers alright 😊
@@spudsandroses Yes spuds are good ground clearer's which is why I always put them in first when cutting new ground. Onions. I tried a few seed this time as my shop only had 1 bag of sets left. I sowed in field and very slow so took a few plants home and put in some barrels I bought for my hydranger cuttings and they produced almost t as much from 6 as from 3 rows in the field, so try it but cover in heavy rain otherwise they bolt..
Brilliant, thanks Robert for your great advice 😊 The onions so far have started to grow already and have beautiful green tips on all of them 😍💚🌿
Beautiful! Thank you for making this video. I am doing a small green roof in Philadelphia in the city. Something beautiful and positive to focus on in dark times. THANK YOU.

Tusen takk 🥰 that is very kind of you 😊💚🌿
Great work, Maiju! I love your big new planters. I was wondering would you consider doing a video about the various tools you use around the garden? The hand tools and the electric or fuel. What do you use, what for, what are your favourite/must-haves?
Thank you, Orla 😍 so kind of you 💚 That is a fantastic suggestion for a video 🙌 such a great idea, I might just take you up on that 🥰
Hi Maiju, the size of those swedes and the celeriac is looking good too. That's a lot of clearing done and an excuse to get new planters each autumn?
Haha, I don' t think I'll get a way adding new planters every year, Ady 😂 just have to start shredding the material next year 😊
Well done on getting so much done! The shorter days make it tough to find the time to get out there so this is impressive stuff ❤💚
Thank you, Emma 🤗 Yes it is difficult to manage it all with shorter days, but when you get a substantial amount done, its really satisfying in the end 🥰 Love the current dry days 💚🌿
Hi Maiju 👋 ❤ Lovely seeing you on Danny's live last night. Geez you've been so busy. Those tomatoes look delicious. Lots of calendula seeds they look so pretty in the garden. Plenty of garden waste for your lovely raised beds. Your pergola looks really lovely. and will be a great space to sit out come sunshine or rain. Love Clematis Montana, we have a pink one that rambles over our pergola. The black netting looks so much nicer than the white netting. Have a great weekend ❤
Thank you, Linda 🤗🥰 last nights Live was a great fun 😂 I agree with the black netting, it looks superior to the white stuff and blends so much better with the nature 💚🌿 Have a great weekend, too and best wishes, Maiju 🥰
Good jobs
Thank you very much 😊💚🌿
Maybe the clear roof will turn out to be a blessing you didn't expect. So sorry you have to move that gorgeous clematis....hope the move goes well. I'm thinking about a few of those metal beds. Glad to see you installing and the challenges.
Hi Robin 😊 those metal beds are really handy and great for plants 💚🌿 I have to find a new planting area for that Clematis and I don't have any wall space or shed roof left to cover that can take such a vigorous climber, but I do want to keep it 🥰
Lovely video Maj! I'm filling my raised beds up the same way this week. Gosh autumn has such a dramatic change to the garden doesn't it. It'll soon be bare soil and awaiting for spring! Lovely video. Danny 🌱🌻
Thanks Danny Boy! 😁 I love seeing the crispy dry leaves off the trees on the ground, its so pretty.....and the next thought is - I'd love to run the lawnmower over them collect it all.... its like gathering gold 😍 I initially loved the idea of mild climate and growing and gardening through winter, but now I seem to be changing my mind about it and prefer to take it easier over winter months just to be really ready for spring again 😊💚🌿
Hi Mijiu love your videos thanks so very much for your videos I live in Kerry. Watched your live on Danny channel and you showed ocra never grew them . Just wondering if I try them . Ps your sheeting over pergola will be fine as wind will blow trough it. While I was watching your video today I know you did that big job during the year as you were concerned about posts ❤❤🪴🌶️💐☘️☘️
Hi Sarah 😍Def try Oca if you're up to tasting new flavours and textures. I wanted to get more into growing them because they don't suffer from blight and can be a potato replacement. Now they're definitely not a spud replacement, and their size is small, but could work as a perennial vegetable (when mulched heavily in winter) or just an all rounder veggie that doesn't seem to have any pests or troubles. The texture is different as well, something more similar to parsnip when cooked, but it can be eaten raw in salads and then it is crunchy 😊💚🌿
We had a similar pergola in our previous home. The polycarbonate is never quite the right size. It will be good when it's done perhaps with some lovely climbing roses. So much hard work. Thank you.
Thanks a million 🥰 We will wait for the sheeting to arrive before attaching the remaining battens, just to make sure we'll get them to the correct distance 😊💚🌿
I love the colours of fall 🍁🍂. Wow so good no one was hurt as that looked wild. Those swedes are funky but I bet delicious 😋. Chickens are quite funny to watch 🤭. AMA ing use of clippings and money saving too 👍. 25:00 love the over view of the house. Have a super week Maiju and hope it’s a calm one, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦
Thank you Ali 🤗💚🌿

How many seasons you have ?Here Kind of Tropical seasons ?A long Hot. Summer ?
Hi, We do have 4 seasons, but as it is a temperate oceanic climate, we get mild winters and a lot of rain
Hi, Thank you so much for the video! It is really surprising that you can make such an engaging & interesting video at this time of the year. I enjoyed it so much. It was nice & long too. It is really interesting to hear your approach in different areas. Your strategy & decisions of the pergola seem absolutely perfect for our climate & I would do the same. The sheeting should do a great job to protect the wood. I cant wait to see how it will look. Is the sheeting the same as is on your glasshouse or is the sheeting on the glasshouse curved? Do you remember where you got your netting from? (Was it from Gardening Naturally) (I have fount it quite difficult to find netting - the usual garden centre netting does not seem to be very strong). I also have a very windy garden. I think it is probably much more exposed than yours. It makes gardening challenging. To think of different long term strategies on how to create nice spaces & protection for plants is a challenge. I am trying to find ways around it and trying to find areas where plants are happy to grow. You are doing such a great job. Thank you so much for sharing it. 😊 I am sorry the girls are creating probelms for you. They are so cute though 🐔 All the best. 💚💚💚 🌸
Aww, thank you so, so much. You deserve a medal 🥇😍 Such a thoughtful and kind comment 😊💚🌿 The polycarb sheeting is flexible material. It comes rolled up and can be attached on a curved shape as the greenhouse roof and sides are, or on a flat surface. We have angled the new pergola roof and will be attaching the polycarb sheeting flat, just need to use good washers as the screws will otherwise go though the material easily. The netting for the hoops is from Gardening Naturally indeed, it is a butterfly netting, only to keep the birds, cats etc off the beds, I think it was 5m in length and is a good, strong netting. Love the hens shuffling in the garden...except when they start eating our crops or make too much of a mess with the woodchips 😀 Thank you again for your lovely, lovely comment 🥰 Have a great day! 😊💚🌿
@@spudsandroses You are so helpful &kind. Thank you. Have a great week too!😊💚

The size of those swedes!! All this clearing. My garden is still just a jungle 😂😂 My greek gigantes aren't quite ready yet - want some nice dry weather!
The swedes are a good size, they're a F1 variety, so far the most reliable..... I left one plant of the GG still standing, where the piece of the arch remained in the ground as the beans themselves aren't that large in the green pods yet...so same here, hoping for them to dry naturally on the plant 😊💚🌿
Oh boy that rocky ground!! I know you've mentioned it before, but seeing you try to dig it 😬😬😬 Definitely needs the raised beds!
Haha, Kerry...I'm actually prospecting, when trying to dig 😂 Especially when carrying the pickaxe, and all you'll hear is the sound of stones clinking against the metal 😁
So peaceful! That is a big area, great idea!
Aww thank you so much, very kind of you 😊💚🌿
Hope open gardening farming.
Thank you 😊💚🌿
Oh my life, Maiju. That carrots! 😮❤😮 They’re simply enormous. Wow, wow, and even more wow. Never seen anything like them! 😂❤❤❤😮 What a bumper harvest. Those apples looked delicious too. Funny how the extra space on the field side looks so integral now. Just a few short month la is all it took to make that area blend in like it’s always been part of the kitchen garden. Hope you didn’t suffer too much from the storm. Enjoying this period of more settled and drier weather here.
Haha, Clare 😂 I know, those carrots were humongous 😂I hadn't seen anything like them either....didn't even know they could grow THAT big! Loving the new addition on the field 😊💚🌿 You're so right, it does look integral to the kitchen garden and I'm delighted about it 😊💚🌿 New video coming today, so you can see what ''Ashley'' did 😉

Thank you, Linda 🤗Those carrots were ridiculously large 😂😂 it is so nice to spend tie in the garden when the weather is pleasant 🥰 Hope you had a lovely Halloween 😊💚🌿
Love the new planter. ❤ Where did you buy it from? We are planning to use that type of planter in the kitchen garden and seen a few different suppliers of similar ones so be good to have your recommendation as you’ve been happy with yours 😊
Hi, Emma 😊 Those oval planters are great space savers, yet spacious. I've ordered them off Vidaxl 💚🌿
@ thank you - will check them out x
I was watching More Than Farmers on here the other day and they put their peas into old pillow cases and bashed them on the floor. Harvested the lot in seconds! Mind blown! 😮😅 Always lovely when the weather surprises you for a bonus day in the garden isn’t it ♥️💚🥰
Hi Emma, I saw that just the other day on another channel, about the pillowcase, too 😀 A little too late for me, but will remember for next year. Absolutely love some dry weather and time spent in the garden 😊 💚🌿
Those carrots are ridiculous 🤣🤣🤣 That last one was almost the size of you! Carrot soup for you. Good job with the new bed - that is the problem with these big beds isn't it - trying to fill them! Some lovely big pumpkins too 💕💕
Thank you, Kerry 🤗Those carrots were monsters 🙈Very tasty and crunchy, still. The bar has been set high for 2025 harvest 😂😂
Thank you for sharing. Love your monster carrots. Lots of carrot soup on the menu I suspect. Hope your son's team were victorious! Harvesting is always so satisfying. A happy day.
Thank you very much 🤗💚🌿 We're still eating them 🤣🤣 The boys came home with a win indeed 🙌🏆 so all around a great day 🥰

! We brought in mice in boxes the other day I was like oh man! They seem to have gone now
😀Oh man! 😂😂Don't want them to scurry around the house!
Hello. You seem to have nice trees with reddish autumnal colour in your garden in this video? What type are they?
Hi and thank you very much, we love their autumnal colour. It is a line of Rowan trees we have growing on the background, they have a conical shape and beautiful berries, but the birds eat the berries as fast as they appear, so they must be tasty 😊💚🌿
❤❤❤. I had a good laugh while you were harvesting your carrots. 😂
Haha😀💚🌿, I was not expecting them to be that large 🙈 and was getting out of breath holding them up😂 They definitely were the finest carrots in the parish 😍
Immense carrots there Maiju - maybe an opportunity for a batch of carrot & coriander soup for the freezer? Had one of those blue sky autumnal days here yesterday where it was a joy to clear the veg plot of courgette and French bean haulms, reveal the soil, feed the active compost bin and be surrounded by robins declaring their territory. Another lovingly-crafted video.
Hi, and thank you for your lovely comment 💚🌿 It is so pleasant to be gardening outdoors on a sunny autumnal day, the same in spring 😍💚🌿 In summer give me shade and a cold, tall mojito 😂
Lovely video - just right for an autumn evening’s watching. Fantastic harvest - and those carrots are ridiculous! I’ve read that cross-pollinated squashes are only toxic if the cross is with ornamental squash, not with other edible squash. Do you know if that’s true? Also, what make are the metal raised beds? Hope the storm wan’t too bad!
Aww, thank you, very kind 😍💚🌿 In my understanding any of the cucurbit family fruit can end up toxic if grown under stress. It is the chemical cucurbitacin that is toxic and really commonly found in cucumbers. The main thing is not to be scared of it, just give a piece of the fruit a ''lick'' and if tasting bitter, not to eat it as it has high levels of cucurbitacins in it and those are harmful when digested. A lot of ornamental squash varieties are edible, but they can cross pollinate witing its species. i.e. Pepo varieties can pollinate with other Pepo varieties, Maxima can pollinate with other Maxima varieties and the plant grown from a seed of a cross pollinated has a higher chance to produce bitter fruit. But don't quote me on it 😂
Hi Maiju, those carrots where enormous, lovely harvest. The planter will be full in no time.
Thank you, Ady 😀 Our carrots and the parsnips you grew (last year?) together would have been a winning combo 😊
What a lovely long video. With what are you fertilising your carrot bed? It can't be just rain. You definitely win on size this season, hope they are tasty too! Congrats on new raised beds, and what a great idea to start in autumn and fill it with garden waste.
Thanks a million 🥰 Early in the year I probably added some seaweed granules to the whole bed and a thin layer of compost, but after that, nothing else. I did sow sparsely, but also had very poor germination, hence no need to thin down and they probably had much more space to grow to get to the size they were 😀 Filling the base of the new planter with spent foliage is making the cleaning up so easy, I definitely don't mind this type of shortcut 😊💚🌿
Those carrots are hilarious! What are you going to do with them all?😂 My entire carrot harvest is smaller than 1 of those!🤣 Glad you got out to do so many jobs. I had a similar day yesterday, it felt so good to be in the sunshine! 😊
It so wonderful to garden in a warming sunshine outside the summer season 😊 Most of them got cooked up the following day - 1/2 with the small squashes for soup and 1/2 with the rest of the veg as roasted veg 😀 They were really sweet and tasty. I was worried they'll have a watery taste because of the size, but absolutely not, they were really tasty 😊💚🌿
Beautiful video Maiju, You got so much done!!! Wow the size of those carrots!!!! definitely show stoppers. I must start doing the same as you and taking a break between gardening jobs, like you I go till i drop sometimes and forget to eat. Loved the whole harvest shots at the end, bountiful!!!! Love Allie & Tricia xx
Well, hello Mrs and Mrs! 😍 Congratulations to both of you again 🎉 Those were celebratory carrots 😀, you can see my struggle, trying to hold them up... Pity I never weighed them, but at least it's all on the video, no photoshop 😂 Absolutely to take breaks, even a sweet tea break will help to get the blood sugar up 💚 Thanks a million, ladies for your kind words, have a great weekend! Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿
@@spudsandroses you are so delightful 🥰 thank you x Bet you could make a carrot 🥕 cake from just one carrot!!! Never seen them that big before. Hope you didn’t get hit too badly with the high winds!! Xx 😘
That was a beautiful video. Inspiring everyone this time of the year. Thank you.
Awww, thank you so much, that's really kind of you 😊💚🌿
Oh and it was very neat to see THE BUZZARD!
😊 most of the time, you'd hear their calls before seeing them...they're nesting the forestry next to us....but buzzards are tiny next to your eagles in Canada 🇨🇦 😀 We had one above us in Columbia Icefields skywalk, it was so impressive 🦅
