  • There are a couple of gardening jobs that pretty much are terrifying to me and send my anxiety through the roof. Mostly because they require a lot of time and energy. Neither of which we have in abundance. Also it all comes down to weather and timing.
But I also have a couple of other topics in todays video - a new flower in the rose garden, trouble with cucumbers in the greenhouse and harvesting potatoes.
I hope you'll enjoy it, and if you do, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe for all the latest updates.

Lovely spuds Maiju, those Red ones had such a vibrant colour and the Charlottes in the 10litre pots looked good too. @@spudsandroses I have no experience with bicarbonate of soda. I suggest using the milk spray (top and bottom of leaves) as a preventative against further mildew and certainly use it on plants as early as possible next year..

  • @trold1969
    @trold1969 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have powdery mildew on my outside cucumbers and patty pan as well. Looks like yours, only it's been more spread out on several leaves for me. Probably due to rain. From other videos I've seen, the milk spray works better if sprayed early/before the mildew. As I never have milk, I haven't tried it. I've cut off all affected leaves, but it's also on the stem, so I'm just hoping some of the cucumbers will grow to a harvestable size, then I will cut down the plants completely. My cucumber plant in the plastic greenhouse is doing great, I'm watering from below on a tray with some pebbles and then a slice of a capillary mat goes into the pot.
I don't have a garden yet, only containers on my balcony but I'm taking notes from your tips. Thanks for the video!

    Hey 👋
The rose garden looks gorgeous Maiju! The foxglove looks really pretty and goes well with that rose.
You have some beautiful growing spaces there but i can imagine that it is a lot of work to maintain it. It is great that you have good mix of green and brown, especially with the chicken poop.
We want to build a new compost bin from pallets as our plastic darlek always gets too full. I have been currently cramming our old chimney with tomato and courgette cuttings as i want to plant a miniature rose that i got for mothers day many years ago in there.
We are slowly cleaning up the garden and a lot of the "stuff" has been centrally now piled up on our broken iron/wooden bench that i want to restore but want to build the composter behind it or move the darlek there and build it where the darlek currently is. We probably would have done it by now but the weather has not been great in the spring.
With the cucumbers, if the white stuff on the leaves comes off, then it's powdery mildew. When the bottom leaves start looking a bit tired and bit big and it's about 2ft/60cm, i take them off and knock off any cucumbers about a foot/30cm from the soil level. It gives the plant a chance to grow and allows air flow. I would mulch it too as i find it has less splash back from the soil. As the plant grows you can then remove any leaves from the bottom that look a bit crispy at the ends. I do the same with courgettes and remove any big leaves before the first fruits. I basically rinse and repeat this a long the vine as i harvest the fruits. You can also choose if you want to single stem the cucumbers or allow it to create off shoots but it would depend on the size of the pot and if you are able to support the vines. They generally aren't as load bearing as squash or courgettes, so jute string it ok and like you said it allows more airflow if they are lifted up a bit more.
I would also recommend getting some ethanol/ alcohol spirit and putting it in a spray bottle to clean your snips in between plants to avoid cross contamination from the leaf to the main vine.
Those potatoes look fab! We couldn't get hold of Red Duke of York or Charlotte this year and we don't have the space to grow that many for the seed potatoes you buy. I bought Orla once from Suttons and it was a big fail and get better results from ones you buy from the supermarket.
We just harvested some of our first potatoes for dinner today. About a lb/ 454g of Maris Pipers (Thanks Tesco potatoes!) About 2 weeks early but it was a fancy dinner as football is on tomorrow, so no roast, just left over day. Also had some carrots with rosemary and kale. We did a big harvest of veg on Thursday for a fish paella. So nice to get some from garden to plate!
We have 4 more containers of a mix of last years desiree that i planted and Maris Pipers and then going to plant Maris peers, Melody and another mystery white potato from Tesco that just said UK written on it! lol Hopefully next year i will be on the ball and on the look out for varieties that we like. We don't have the space to be self sufficient but i like to have some homegrown for fancy roast dinners, like birthdays, Christmas or great offers on meats.
Blossom can have a holiday break at ours. Plenty of slugs and snails to be had here! lol
Anyway, have a great weekend and take care!

I agree with you about getting those homegrown harvests, even if only for special occasion. It is still better to eat homegrown and learn along the way 😊
we found the Charlottes totally tasteless from the last harvest 🤭 as the Red Duke of York was delicious.
Our garden can get overwhelming at times indeed, and a lot of it has to do with the amount of rain we get. I do like to garden on dry days so if we get a long spell of rain, I do fall behind with the jobs.
Thanks a million for the great advice on the cucumber, really appreciate it! 💚🌿
Have a great Sunday and a new week ahead! Best wishes, Maiju 🌿

@@spudsandroses Yes i miss the times when we had rain at night and sunny not so hot days and our seasons were more stable.
We only have a standard size garden and are behind on so many improvement projects in the garden this year due to the weather and health. Only 10 years here and still learning this garden. From high flat balconies as a kid to ground shared gardens or basement patios, you never stop learning to how to garden, and where you garden. I think that is what i love and can dread sometimes but that is when the passion for gardening kicks in. x

😂😂 pruning the tomatoes 🍅 I start out with good intentions but 🤷‍♀️. Gerald does all the pruning of hedges etc. What you need are a few more compost bays you can fill and just leave alone. But love the chipper we want one of those too. The perennial fox glove is lovely. Yes looks like mildew just cut off the leaves it’s ugly but not detrimental to the fruits. You can also spray with milky water. All looking lovely Maiju hope the suns sticking around, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦

@myrustygarden Hi Ali 🤗 would Gerald like a trip to Ireland? 😂😂
The chipper is great for getting through all of the prunings, we have a small electrical one as well and that would have used up 3 hrs of electricity for the same amount of work done, that the chipper gets through in 15 min, plus the electrical one gets clogged all the time by the soft young branches....
