What's supposed to happen after the water is discovered? Is the delivery rescheduled? Is it reported? What's the proper chain of command for this situation?
@@finally97 States have minimum tolerances on the amount of water that is acceptable in a tank. Some states have 0.5" some states have 1.5" of water that is acceptable. These tolerances are also based on the size of the tank. Anything above, fuel has to be stopped from being sold and deliveries are no longer made. A Class C certified person (Usually the store owner/manager or above are Class C) then documents this in their internal log (Which was missing at this station, according to the news report) and call their petro contractor. This Petro contractor will then pump the water out, and check where the water came into the tank from fix that leak. They will also inspect each pump to see if water is in the lines. If there is water in the line, those pumps are purged, filters inside the pump replaced, then purged, then filters are replaced again, signed and dated of when they were replaced. Then the pumps are calibrated to the correct amount of fuel dispensed according to the screen. (If screen says gallon the amount coming out of the nozzle must be a gallon not to the hose). This calibration spot gets a new wire with a metal state seal that has to be broken to be removed (In case someone wants to mess with the calibration) Most gas stations in the city have an electronic tank reader, that monitors the level of fuel and water in each tank. If water is above that tolerance level, they will start beeping loudly. The only ones that I haven't seen them in are local stores in far rural towns.
@@salma_Nella22 Shell, Chevron, Exxon. The big names. You may have other big names depending on where you live but stay away from the smaller junkie ones
I worked at a gas station in the early to mid seventies. Once a week and after every delivery of fuel I would stick the tanks with water finder on the stick to check for water.
If a pump is unserviceable then you simply turn the breaker for that pump off so nobody could use it ''by error''. Simple as that. So the owner knew and is running a scam operation. Shut the place down and sue the owner for all the damages and losses, then put this criminal in jail where he belongs.
Pump systems aren't like that anymore. The pump is below ground in thestorage tank now, has been for over 3 decades. As for the device standing there on the concrete island, yeah, we call it a pump, but only in name. Used to be, each "pump" had its own pump in the bottom compartment, so if you turned on either side, the pump came to life. If 2 hoses were dispensing at a time, it went a bit slower. Now, with the actual pump down in the tank, and it's a higher volume pump, one big pump can feed fuel to several heads at one time. The only power needed at the head, would be to light up any lights in it, run the onboard computer, and serve the network that all the "pumps" are tied to the main kiosk in the building with. So if one "pump" is powered, they're all powered. That's why they put garbage bags over the hose gun to keep people from grabbing and using certain units. That said, I'm not defending these boneheads who have serious water problems in their fuels, I'm just trying to explain roughly how things work in modern filling stations.
This happened to me in St. Louis. I and another customer put gas in the car and both cars stalled before leaving the lot. The gas station paid all the charges to fix all the cars that got gas that day. It was inconvenient, but at least they corrected the mistake

As someone that works at a gas station and had this happen recently in the town i work in, at a different gas station.... this is actually pretty common when companies dont take care of their holding tanks. Leaks happen and with the crazy weather we've had nationwide...... this will continue to happen more often. The company i work at, is constantly checking their tanks, their pumps, programming systems, etc. But we sadly have many that dont.
Not necessarily, the tanks temperature, height, weight, volume, and other things are supposed to be regulated, normally by a device, most places use Veeder Root. If they are not monitored this can cause all sort of things to happen, and in this case you got water in the tank.
I worked for 3 years at a gas station and I had to check the tanks for water EVERY SHIFT EVERY SHIFT IS SUPPOSED TO STICK THE TANKS WITH THE WATER DETECTION GEL ON THE STICK. They are not doing what is required These tanks are leaking into the ground
Had a gas station once accidentally put diesel fuel in a gasoline tank. Then when it did a $1,000 of damage to my car refuse to admit their mistake. They even had swapped the receipt to say diesel to cover their F up, but forgot that diesel filling handles are larger and can't be fit into a gasoline downspout. I went back to the station, and showed the pump showed "Gas", but the receipt showed "Diesel" into a gas can. That won my lawsuit, but it should have never gotten to that point.
I work at a gas station in pa and we have a system that shuts down our gas pumps if there is a large amount of water in the tanks it also prints out water and gas levels in the tanks every 4 hours.
Water, being heavier than gas collects on bottom of tank, common situation with gas stations. If they just had a dump of fuel from a tanker that will stir up what's in the tank. Someone pumping gas into their automobile will likely get water. That's why I don't get gas if there is a fuel tanker on the driveway, learned that 50 years ago at sun oil company in Detroit. (Dealer management school.
You don't need to redo your engine buddy just cuz you got some water in your gas tank you just need to drain all the gas out of it and put some fresh gas in it with a little bit of dry gas to get the rest of the moisture out evidently they're meter root system isn't working right it's supposed to drain the water out of the tanks when it gets a certain amount in it
I'm an Army veteran and receipt/distributing fuel was part of my job. A dirty little secret that gas companies don't want you to know about is the delivery trucks DO NOT have filtering systems. About 1/4 of what they have in their trucks is WATER. B-12 Chemtool will remove water from your fuel tank, it should be regularly added to your fuel tank NO MATTER where you get fuel. The filters on the pumps at your local gas station are only meant to trap SOLIDS, not water.
Despot this word or term isn’t commonly used in my region ( Washington State) but it should be . Exactly what’s happening here ! Despot corrupt business practices. Sad but very true.
That is SO much water!! Water not only wont burn (obviously), it can also ruin the whole fuel system. Fuel pump, injectors, and anything else that touches fuel may be damaged. The fuel tank may even need to be removed to properly be cleaned out at times.
Fuel filters won't let water through. That's why the car quits running. Draining the gas tank & replacing the fuel filter is generally all that is required to fix this. Problem is, most repair shops will go way overboard wanting to replace fuel lines, injector cleaner, oil changes, etc... all of which are totally unnecessary.
Wait. Someone who worked at the gas station down the street told me not to buy it cause they put water in it ... I thought she was just being picky like no way anyone would do that. Ummmmm
The state won't regulate the quality of gasoline sold, but they sure did charge those people taxes on that contaminated gas. Will the State refund those people the gas tax?
I work in the oil & energy sector, and this whole process is wrong. Those tanks should be gauged daily.. and in doing so, you’re able to identify the tanks that contain water.
To get that much water in the underground tanks at the gas station, either the tanks are rotted out and have holes in them allowing surface water to leak in, or the owner is literally filling the fuel tanks with water to make more money!
Usually gas stations only have 4 tanks, 3 for each octane level and 1 for diesel. The 3 tanks containing gas feed gas to all of the pumping stations which means that if water was say, in the 83 octane tank all of the pumps would have been pumping out bad 83 octane gas not just the two that had bags on them. It's hard to believe that out of all the people who got gas there only two ended up with water.

As a mechanic, I can tell you the charges for those repairs are a scam. A majority of the repair is dropping the fuel tank to get the water out and cleaned, disconnect the fuel lines up front to blow out or flush the lines out with fresh gas and add a fuel system cleaner. Technically no parts needed other than a new seal for the fuel pump to make sure it doesn't leak when reinstalled.
Mbz dumb@
I was thinking the same but I've also never seen a 7:1 ratio of water and gas put in a car before so idk. We had a little once and just ran heet through it and it was fine.
@@diapysik @diapysik I think the biggest thing is making sure the tank is clean and dry so it minimizes the amount of water remaining in the system, especially if that fuel system has a fuel return line. That's a reason i won't work on vehicles that have been sitting a year or two with stale gas. Ethanol gas breaks down and will mess a fuel system up and even damage an engine. it'll start today and be locked up or bend valves the next time you go to start it if it's stale.

As a former tech it does not cost $1,700.00 to flush the engine. You drain the tank and use an external tank/vessel to supply fuel. Run it about 1/2 hour, change the filter and fill it up.
That was the real crime. Lol
Exactly. I'm a retired mechanic. The real thieves are the mechanics shop that is charging that much. I would have done it all for less than 500. New engine oil, fuel filter, draining the fuel tank.
Im an auto tech and the last time I had a car with water in the fuel tank it was a big headache. I did the usual repairs, drain gas tank, replace fuel filter, clean fuel lines and vehicle didn’t start. The bad fuel ended damaging the fuel pump and the spark plugs. Customer paid over 2k, now I just tell customer that we will have to start by draining gas tank and go from there.
@@iati6294 i mean you could have checked the fuel pump and spark plugs first. that should have been part of the job before you tried to run it with a half assed repair.

I was a tanker truck driver and I would check for water if the tank had moved in than 3 inches of water we would not deliver the gas
Bingo, we are supposed to stick the tank every time before dropping.
Yes but most drivers wont have water paste or even pump the rain water out of the spill buckets
This calibration spot gets a new wire with a metal state seal that has to be broken to be removed (In case someone wants to mess with the calibration)
Most gas stations in the city have an electronic tank reader, that monitors the level of fuel and water in each tank. If water is above that tolerance level, they will start beeping loudly. The only ones that I haven't seen them in are local stores in far rural towns.

If water is leaking in, gas is leaking out,
Not necessarily, the tanks temperature, height, weight, volume, and other things are supposed to be regulated, normally by a device, most places use Veeder Root. If they are not monitored this can cause all sort of things to happen, and in this case you got water in the tank.

But they tell people to buy at a station that has fresh gas deliveries. Specific gravity of water and oil very different they don’t mix.
Wait... He never goes there, but he knows which pumps always have a bag on them?
Wow. Thank you for this information! How much much of the B-12 Chemtool do I use for a full tank of gas?

Fuel filters won't let water through. That's why the car quits running. Draining the gas tank & replacing the fuel filter is generally all that is required to fix this.
Problem is, most repair shops will go way overboard wanting to replace fuel lines, injector cleaner, oil changes, etc... all of which are totally unnecessary.
Wait. Someone who worked at the gas station down the street told me not to buy it cause they put water in it ... I thought she was just being picky like no way anyone would do that. Ummmmm

Hmm.. in Florida the state routinely shuts down stations with bad gas. Sounds like you need to fix your laws up there.
Sure they do
I work in the oil & energy sector, and this whole process is wrong. Those tanks should be gauged daily.. and in doing so, you’re able to identify the tanks that contain water.
To get that much water in the underground tanks at the gas station, either the tanks are rotted out and have holes in them allowing surface water to leak in, or the owner is literally filling the fuel tanks with water to make more money!
ill take B for 100 lol
Adding water to a storage tank would just lead to trouble. You do know water and gas don’t mix?
After so many reports you’d think the county would take action.
Must be they filled up, other people just put in a little bit.
