Trapped in a Psych Ward: ‘I felt kidnapped.' New patient speaks after 7 report

  • The 7 Investigators were the first to show you in February how patients have been alleging they were held against their will in psychiatric hospitals, or they say they were coerced into staying for treatment they don’t need. Since then, we’ve received hundreds of calls and emails from patients and family members with similar stories. Now, another local patient has come forward to share her story of how she says she was held against her will.

I was 15 and saw a therapist. First visit she put me on anti-depression medication. It made me way worse and i tried to do something bad. I stopped those pills immediately (actually my bff at the time STOLE them from me in order to save me, cuz he saw how i was behaving, thank you to him) and just tried to self heal. Turns out all my issues went away soon as i left my family, of addicts and abusers. Something the therapist never even suggested could be the issue. I still have deep set mental health issues, but they’re manageable. I have a serious distrust of any mental health care now as an adult. Im scared to even seek help for my BPD or intense panic attacks.
If i get put on bad medication again it might be the last time i do anything. I actually just shed a tear typing that because it feels so likely to happen.

Making a blanket statement like that is very dangerous. If I didn't go to the psychiatric hospital, the times that I needed to, I would be dead. Literally dead, because I needed medical intervention... Not to mention I've known so many people personally, who psych words have saved their lives. Not all places are like this, and we've made leaps and bounds in terms of medical psychiatric care.

Leaving this on a top comment, in hopes that people will understand the nuance behind these issues, as this was not addressed in the new section. Since they just want to sensationalize this, instead of giving proper information that could actually help people.
      2:59
This is the biggest problem, often times people are kept because there isn't a step down. People still need to be monitored, but they don't have a step down. (not speaking about this one.obviously clues something was wrong, since he was having residents fill out paperwork that he was supposed to be filling out), Other doctors I've spoken to are scared of letting somebody out, especially when they have suicidal ideation and having them kill themselves. They can then be sued.
Psychiatric care, and being forced into the hospital saved mine and many people I love, lives. Almost every single person in the hospital, doesn't want to be there. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be there. I think if we had more intensive outpatient, and partial hospital patient programs, things would be a lot better. Those step-down programs, saved my life. I was able to continue to get treatment, while working on myself in the real world. I wonder if there are a lack of places in the state, like that.
Even when Sarah says that she is not depressed anymore, and is no longer suicidal and would like to go home, that's not enough, in MOST cases. They have to show that you are no longer suicidal, through engaging with treatment But, the difference with her cases she actually had an outside psychiatrist. Which means she should have been released within 24 to 48 hours at the most. I went through something similar, where someone called the police on me to be punitive. I was released the next morning, because I was working with an outside psychiatrist at that point.
But in general if you don't have an outside doctor you're working with, and you've said that, they have to hold you. Then if you proceed to continue to freak out while you're in there, they're going to hold you even longer. Typically every time I've tried to kill myself in the past, I was always held for a week. The only times it was a little bit over a week, was when they could not find a step-down program for me. Which was necessary for me to be released. Plus the more that you ask to be released, instead of focusing on treatment, the more that you're going to hurt yourself.
There have been many times I've been in the hospital, and people are waiting on beds and that's why they're there. But this case seems completely different.
I just wanted to note, when there are times that things may not make sense to outside people, but the person actually does have to be held. Even if they don't want to. I don't want the field of psychiatry to be demonized, or for people to not trust psychiatric professionals on a whole, just because of this bad apple.
Just heartbreaking to me, that there's so many people I know in this comment section, who will not understand the context of this particular situation and will generalize things(as I've already seen). Which is very sad to me, I would have thought it would have been better if they had shown an example of when somebody truly needs to be held. Then people could understand the difference. It's a shame that the news organization didn't do that, and it seems like they just want to sensationalize things, instead of giving people the proper context....😢

@@thomgizzizPlus, what they say is "crazy" is often exaggerated to make themselves more money. For example, this patient admitted herself for depression, and the doctor marked down that she was psychotic instead so that he would have an excuse to keep her longer and bill her insurance for more money. He would also pre-sign medical forms indicating that the patient was psychotic without even having a patient yet.
In my country (Canada), they have to take you to court to keep you in a hospital against your will, and it's quite rare for that to happen.

While I agree with you 1,000%, I'll play devil's advocate. Before the 1970s, all it took was a doctor like this to say you were mental off your rocker and you were institutionalized just like this woman was. Terrible, we all agree. The alternative is what we have today, where a large percentage of the homeless population is mentally unstable, taking over streets, committing crime, defecating on the street and causing all types of issues.
But again, in this case, it's clear the doctor found a nice little way to enrich himself and if it's proven that he never actually did anything to evaluate these people (with a second, independent person backing his findings), he should be thrown in jail with not release date given!

If you’re looking for solutions, see if it’s physical, situational, or spiritual. Yes, we are an eternal spirit, but we do have a physical body that can have chemical, nutritional, or hormonal imbalances that can be discovered with a blood test typically and resolve with nutrition and physical activity. Situational distress can typically be handled with therapy including spiritual counseling, but truly spiritual soul issues, such as hidden trauma or even a demonized soul is very real. The simple solution is Jesus, but the spiritual process can take a lot of guidance, scripture study, and prayer. It’s nothing to be ashamed of even Peter’s mother-in-law had a spirit of infirmity. As a Holy Spirit, sooooo believer I often find people saying they don’t know why they’re telling me things, as they are trauma starts pouring out from deep within their soul or they don’t know what comes over them when they tell me, they don’t act like them selves. That’s because it’s not always just themselves. I’m now in special, if you want to know, the solution read scriptures start in the book of Mark then Luke if your a strong Christian, or Matthew and John if you need to start with the basics and get refounded on what scripture says that might be very different from what you heard from church. God is good, his solutions are accessible pray for the RIGHT help. God love YOU!

    • @horlzonline1131
      @horlzonline1131 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +33

You can tell them that you are considering it and any good professional will not lock you up on that basis alone. You will only be sent to a hospital if you have a plan in place, and/or an intent and means to harm yourself or others in the moment. Then, the professional will attempt to have you go in of your own free will, rather than having anyone take you away. It is only when you or someone else is in immediate danger, and you do not want to help yourself, that people are supposed to be hospitalized against their will.
Some professionals jump the gun, and I'd consider those people to be unworthy of a license, but suicidal thoughts and depression symptoms are a common thing people see professionals for. If every person who has ever disclosed suicidal thoughts to a professional was hospitalized, we'd have far bigger problems than we have now, (and mind you, we already have significant problems in this field).

They need to investigate hospitals in all 50 states. I was in one. My goal was to be there only a few days. 3 days went by and I was asking to go home so they marked me as involuntary meaning the doctor had to release me. They held me for 14 days. Every day I begged the social workers who would come by to help me. They never gave me any actual medicine that I needed. I would beg the doctor and he would say “hmmm I don’t know” so I just shut down. Stopped answering their questions. The nurses would gaslight me. I wish I could’ve filed a lawsuit or went to the press. I hope they investigate other mental hospitals.

I was taken to one against my will, and they gave patients a wireless phone to call a family member to talk to them for a certain amount of time. I used it to call the police to try to get the heck out of there. They forced me to go back to my cell and wouldn't allow me to talk to the police officer I called, but instead a bunch of people came and injected me with something to make me pass out and go to sleep. The cops never spoke to me and I had to just keep a level head and wait for them to let me leave 2 weeks later.

That's "cute" to SAY, but in reality, the bottom line is that those "health professionals" opinions are "subjective".....just like one dentist saying "that tooth needed to come out"
They'd NEVER be able to "prove" said person didn't "need" to be treated 2 days vs. 5 days.....cause it's subjective.
It's scary AF, but that's just the truth ....one doctor says a pregnant 🤰 woman "must" be induced or c-section performed within 2-3days of the original due date.....another doc says "let's wait and see"
Who's "right" and who committed a "crime"? There are no absolutes....you couldn't get a charge to stick w/o something extraordinarily obvious and a difference in opinions isn't enough, unfortunately

I have a similar story. I am a Veteran with PTSD and TBI. I was having issues sleeping and went to the ER strictly to get help sleeping. They asked me if I was suicidal, I said no - I was just having issues dealing with stuff. The Psychiatrist told me: "I think you're suicidal. You wouldn't have came here otherwise. I can involuntarily commit you which will result in certain rights being taken away such as owning a gun.... or you can voluntarily commit yourself for 3 days and it won't affect anything".
Needless to say I voluntarily committed myself.... once I was "committed" i was unable to leave for 72 hours no matter how much I demanded, begged and pleaded.
I have not seen a psychologist since, nor will I ever. This happened in Michigan, as well.

The evidence can be blatantly obvious.....and trust that there are those (even outside of that agency) that will go out their way to leaving you holding whatever they initiated and instigated in your life (as lies don't just up and magically state whatever claim). It takes a person choosing to open their trap, to lie and tell tales. When itnl comes to behaviors as such, it was practiced and purposely perfected before everyone here existed (well a high percentage of us)......and that behavior was not coincidental. For some, it doesn't matter who they throw under the bus. All it requires is someone needing them/coming to them.....and they will run a marathon with their stupidity. A woman once told me as we sat in Starbucks, that a lawyer friend of hers ended up committing suicide, soley based on what their psychiatrist told them. Maybe she was the psychiatrist that she spoke of.......I don't know. As her random need to tell me something as such, came across as odd. Folk be doing all type of shit, that once they've done it, it's obvious that they were clueless that whatever repercussions they encountered, would knock at ***their front door.

My French friend’s son would have been easily identified as ADHD and put on amphetamines if he was in America or UK. Luckily in the continental Europe, the teachers are not allowed to pressure parents in that way. It’s a normal growth. It’s actually abnormal to have an anal child with high “executive function” at age 10 or 13, or in terribly difficult and vulnerable teen years. That said, my friend’s son is hyperactivity didn’t cease, that’s how he is and he has been studying, skydiving, organizing student unions … no meds! He turned extremely successful, started his own business, got married to a great girl and planning kids. He is normal and very successful young man. Upbeat too.
God knows if he was tagged ADHD as in serious 🧐 disorder that “needs” to be corrected by meds, God only knows if he would be normal now?! I know plenty of kids who decided to get off that - pardon my French - crap meds because it made them depressed and they hated the fact that they lost their childhood’s beautiful creativity by feeling strung on drugs and thinking that something was wrong with them. Not to mention that having kids on “meds” was a step closer towards using other drugs. We are not all the same, our mental states shift depending on what’s happening with us and around us. It would be better to have reading circles with variety of literature without ideological thematics and open forum discussions on various topics. This would be a much better and healthier way to help anyone with mental turbulences (we all have them) than meds and faux diagnostic of one or the other “disorder.” Art circles work!

it is astounding to me any adult can have another adult committed to a psych hospital.
be careful what you say to psychiatrists and family. they are not there to help you.
i was incarcerated in a psych ward. my parents called and said i was suicidal. i was sad. but not suicidal. the police woke me up and threw me against the wall and handcuffed me. took me to the hospital. i was strip searched. given a gown that didn't close. my phone was taken. i saw no doctors. i was handcuffed to a bed most of the day. i insisted i was not suicidal. they said i had to spend the night. i was locked in a room with a plastic bench to sleep on and a thin blanket with holes in it. the tv could not be turned off or the channel changed. bc i said little except that i was not suicidal they let me go at 6am the next morning. said they had no reason to keep me. my psychiatrist was supposed to see me but couldn't make the time to come to the hospital.
my psychiatrist threatened to put me back in there if i didn't "straighten up" and was treating me like a bad child. she said "i can take your phone and have you locked up anytime" i stopped seeing her. the psychiatrists are not good
people. they push pills, they threaten to put you in the psych ward. they are not out to help you.
i now see a pro bono therapist. we have made more progress than i ever did with the shrink. i don't trust psychiatrists for anything anymore.

I knew something was up when the door locked behind me when they took me back to see a social worker. I just wanted to talk to someone but next thing I know s sheriff's deputy shows up and handcuffs and shackles me. I'm driven 2 hours too Raleigh, a hell hole called Holly Hill Hospital. The commitment paperwork said I was phycotic and suicidal. This was blatantly false. They wanted to keep me for 21 days. Like this poor lady I had a cat 😺 at home that needed tending. I got a hold of a lawyer at disability rights NC. The next day I was all better and discharged. It than cost me a 200 dollars Uber ride home.
