    I almost pulled the trigger on this a couple of months ago, but had a last minute change of heart. Reviews since then have made me so happy I did. There is no excuse for a laptop at this price point carrying the issues you have discussed here. Great review, and hopefully lots of prospective XPS purchasers will see it before committing.

      @@umaryusuf9293 Hi Umar. I still haven't figured it all out. I have been looking very carefully at the Lenovo Thinkpad lineup, but the endless choices (X? Z? P? E? T?) plus reports of thermal issues with the higher end variants have given me pause. I love the Lenovo Yoga 9i machines but the screen size is too small. I was considering the ASUS ZenBook Pro 16X machines but the starting price is eye-watering. So.... I really have no idea.
      I need to sit down with someone (who isn't in sales) and figure out what specs I really need for my use case and go from there. How is your hunt going?

      I regret buying it, it has a nice screen and great speakers but the performance is so odd and to top it off I get only 4 hours battery life doing nothing. Things I would improve, I would give it a 1080p webcam, make sure it has 8 hour battery life, make it slightly larger to accomadate a higher wattage 3050ti, cpu and an HDMI port. In the case of the laptop how it is, I would have liked a lower powered smaller charger as you never pull more than 100w from the wall with it.

    I believe the play in the hinge is actually a feature to improve durability.
    The looseness in the hinge allows vibrations from the user or machine to move the panel slightly instead of applying that force directly to the hinge mounts. It dampens the force of the movement sort of like OIS does in cameras. While the larger movements are more individually stressful on the hinge, it's actually the smaller ones from vibrations that can wear the hinge mounts out the most since they're more frequent.
    Nintendo uses a similar design on their handhelds when you have them opened or to one of their snap positions. Pretty much all of them have it.

    The squelching double sided tape thing has been an issue since at the very least the 7590 XPS 15. I have one, and for what I do it's perfect (once I borrowed my friends' Display Calibration Tool). But I had to do 2 reinstalls of windows because of Audio Driver issues, and I actually took mine apart (still under warranty) to properly re-adhere the tape because it was driving me mad. It was all well but seems that it has become 'unstuck' again and I'm going to go back and shove a piece of electrical tape to shut it up. You're the first and currently only person to mention this in a review, so thank you for that.
    I never understood why Dell doesn't just put thunderbolt on all it's Type C ports. It's ridiculous. Their precision 5470 has that for example so it's mind boggling.

    • @RorschDG-2
      @RorschDG-2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waldengaming9752 you have to remove the display from the machine itself, then you need to remove the plastic antenna cover and that’s where the tape is. I’d suggest looking at the Service Manual for your machine to figure out how to do that because you need to good one of the hinges at a certain angle.

      Dell changed the screen, but the issue was still there. Maybe they didn't change that part with the tape. I'm not sure. Now they swapped the whole computer again, and finally, it is free from issues. But I was really wondering where the sound was from.
      I did open up the computer and loosened the screen cable brackets on the motherboard. The tape sound went away. (Not optimal though) But the sound would come back a little bit when I pressed on the top of the Palmrest, but went away after 2-3 openings ans closing

      Generations of XPS laptops had DPC latency issues. Dell promised a fix around 2018 and firmware tweaks helped some but the lead engineer stated that hardware decisions prevented more improvement. I don't know what the situation is in 2022 but I would assume the performance is what it is and not expect any changes from Dell.

    I always really loved my older 2017 XPS, unless we're talking gaming performance..
    After about half an hour of gaming it just completely sh*ts itself and drops the CPU into the mariana's trench at 0.78 GHz until you either take away the load and let it cool for ages, or put it in sleep and back for about 0.3 nanoseconds and all was fine again, which is apparently some skin temperature protection BS.

      Ok so, do you need a ton of ram? If not, look into the vivobook pro oled's. They have a 1080p oled panel ranging from 60hz to 144hz. Also pack a 5800h and 50w 3050/ti. The only downside is the 4 or 8gb of soldered ram and the single upgradable ram slot. Limits max ram to 40gb. (32gb + 8gb). But, it is hella cheap for what it is.
      Your next bet is the gigabyte aero 16 and the aorus 5. Both have a 4k oled and a i7 12700h. The aero 16 has a 3070ti 100w, the aorus 5 has a 140w 3070ti. These are fully upgradable, especially that aorus 5.

      @@blastfilmmaking3658 Yeah, trust me. The XPS, as cool as it looks, is utter garbage. Gaming laptops shred it in performance and rival it in battery life. Cheap creator laptops literally pack better panels in their base models than what dell gives you in their base model. On top of the creator laptops not being much weaker while literally costing half if not even less.
      I do wish other manufacturers would pick up on the XPS design. It is very good. The XPS 17 is basically the same size as a MBP 16' but with a larger display. I'm sure a 17' gaming laptop like that would be a killer hit.

    Very good, scathing review although I think I disagree with your conclusion. What laptop other than this XPS would you recomment for a data scientist/software developer mainly running Linux on the machine? Most gaming laptops are uglier, louder, bigger, with suboptimal screens for productive use, worde battery life, and bad input devices on the machine. If you have any recommendations on a "Macbook Pro" but with an Nvidia GPU and Linux compatibility I'd be extremely happy.
    I don't need top end sustained performance, I usually undervolt and even configure lower TDPs on my laptops. My goal is to get a quiet system with a bit of grunt for spikes when running code. Most of the time I'm just typing in an IDE or browsing the web (what others call coding). If I can get more than 5 hrs on battery with a laptop configured this way I'm already happy, but around 8 would be perfect. I do need a dedicated Nvidia GPU for CUDA support though and one with at least 4 GB VRAM.
    I've closely considered the Tuxedo Infinitybook Pro 14 Gen 7, but it's as expensive as the XPS 15 9520 in my country, with higher idle/low usage power consumption, while having louder fans.

    i ended up buying it on sale for $1329 with the 3050 (non ti) and standard screen. I will give it a try and see how i like it. But seeing the next gen 13700h/4050 version did not leave me really wanting to wait and pay more for that as its likely to have similar issues. After all 45w is 45w... It will likely game a bit better though.

      I actually own the XPS 15 9530 configured with an i7-13700H + RTX 4050 (50W). I got it as a warranty exchange unit from myprevious XPS 15 9510 (i7-11800H + RTX 3050Ti). To be honest, I can ABSOLUTELY feel the difference in graphical performance. RTX 4050 is about as fast as an RTX 3060, so the performance improvement is quite noticable. In addition, the GPU heats up noticeably less all thanks to the newer and more efficient ada architecture. So yes, the improvement will be noticable if you opt for a 4050 configuration (unless you got enough money to upgrade to a 4060).

    I'm surprised at how Dell managed to bet Apple in the "design over function" competiton. I used to have an XPS, an was shocked at how unnaturally difficult it was to even open the lid, and how the poor machine was constantly running hot. Using Intel CPUs exclusively is also a terrible idea on a thin and powerful laptop.

    Had this one at work and hated absolutely everything. The edges, the surface feel, the look. Only thing good about it were the specs, but the physical form was unbearable. It started malfunctioning after 2 years. It was offered to me for about $200, and I passed on it. Didn't want to take chances fixing it. Felt like a BIOS chip failure.
    On X15 palm rejection demanded an external mouse almost immediately. You like the palm rests? I hated them.

    Is there any alternative to this? I'm not playing any games on this, while wanting some portable 15-inch i7 laptops for some basic codings and machine-learning tests. HP Envy 16 (too heavy), X1 Extreme (expensive), T15p (lack TB ports + too heavy), Alienware X15 R2 (too expensive + bulky charger), Inspiron 7620 (XXXX keyboard + lack TB ports)... It's sad to say in this way, but it's very hard to find any alternative to this one.

      @@andi2ews108 I finally ended up with XPS 15 and very satisfied. One caveat would be the lack of compatible "USB PD 130W" charger. Some other windows 140W laptops and macbook have compatible PD 3.1 chargers. But I am very satisfied and it works really well with some middle-range machine learning tasks and bulky statistics data.

    I think you should do a review on the ZBook Studio series if possible, because these are also in the lightweight + discrete GPU category and they don't suffer ridiculous throttling issues like the XPS series here. My G7 personally can run Cyberpunk 2077 for a few hours just fine, without any throttling issues and whatnot - and that's with a Quadro GPU!
    They're proper workstations and not exactly consumer laptops though, which means their price tags are ridiculous...unless you buy used. Which is where mine come from because let's be honest, spending $4/5k USD on a new laptop is just way too much for 99% of us lol.

      I have been pondering looking at some of the XPS's direct competitors since a lot of people do use them for both work and gaming (including me - I have an Aero 16 that I do a bit of everything on). The XPS gets all the attention but I suspect there are a lot of better-engineered alternatives that are being mostly ignored.

    As a business owner, out of all the brands that we've bought from, Dell is consistently the best in terms of quality and service, and the bulk purchase price of XPS is good, Lenovo is pretty good too. But YMMV for individual buyers, brands like Lenovo, HP and Dell are definitely business centric brands, both in terms of pricing and service, because from what I heard they all treat individual buyers like crap.
    Having said that, I feel like 1080p screen option is definitely added as an afterthought.
    For the 3.5k OLED and 4k IPS models, the entire screen assembly is covered by one piece glass panel without plastic bezels, and they are noticeably sturdier than the 1080p model shown in your video, but there is no excuse for that at this price.
    One more thing I'd like to mention is battery longevity, and every Windows laptop we had from this category failed miserably, I think X1 and XPS are both rated at 300 charge cycle (I heard that's the industry standard for Windows laptop OEMs) when Apple MacBooks are rated at 1000.
    We actually switched from Lenovo Thinkpad X1 / P1 fleet to XPS/Precision a few years back, and Dell laptops so far are on par if not slightly more reliable and durable than Lenovo laptops we had, and battery life is noticeably better too. Anyway, we have yet to find a laptop in this sort of thin and light category that can match X1 and XPS, except Apple MB.

      Apple started it... and at least they have decent palm rejection so it's less of an issue, but I still don't know what the upside of it is supposed to be. If I think back on all the laptops I've owned with trackpads since the early 2000s, I can't recall finding any of them frustrating because they were too small. Bad buttons? Yep. Bad palm rejection? Yep. Bad tracking, Yep. Over or under sensitive? Yep. Too small? Not really.

    I have just received an upgrade of my XPS 15 9570. That was a terrible laptop. At the beginning there were ton of issues. Flickering screen, disconnecting dock. Random BSOD, inflating battery (replaced twice). With every BIOS update there were 5-10% performance drop due to fixing all the security flaws. The only way to have some performance was to add thermal pads on whole heatpipe to let the heat to the back of the laptop and undervolt using throttlestop. I hoped that DELL finally learn from their mistakes, but obviously not. I would have to fix the thermals again for myself.

    Great review. I would love a laptop equipped with a similar specification as tested in this review but wouldn't buy a Dell product.
    I've only owned 2 laptops (both HP) and after my 1st one survived 7 years of faultless use just about everyday for 8-12 hours, going everywhere with me: working from the office, from home, travelling all over, surviving winter temperatures of minus 30°C to minus 40°C (for hours, in an uninsulated case) - taking a few "spills" with me while walking on thick ice too..... The extreme temperatures of course killed the battery (not HP's fault) but otherwise it fired-up and just worked faultlessly until the day it wouldn't wake up one morning.
    The same experience with my replacement HP device which still looks like new, and works like new after 5 years. (These days I have an insulated battery pocket in my parka - so the original battery is still good for 5-8 hours operation if need be: as new! Only 4GB RAM, an HDD and so on, but the BIOS time is typically 3.0sec to 4.0sec (according to the task manager)...
    A friend of mine got a very well-spec'd Dell laptop just 12 months ago (probably 8-16GB RAM, SSD, no doubt a great processor too). It just sits in his home or in his office (that's all). It doesn't have "the life," journeys, or face the extremes that my "back to school" HP laptop does, but after just 1 year his Dell laptop has a crack here, a screw missing there, the hinge suddenly isn't working as it should, and this/that program/feature seems to have a problem now...

    No way the battery life is true in real life use. I have installed a 97wh battery it lasts 4-5 hours most with heavy use, 8-9 hours at most with light use (powersaving mode). In heavy use the machine draw upto 35-40w/h power, in light use around 9-15w/h, you do the maths. And you shouldn't fully drain a lithium battery. This is for my 9550 tho, but the reviewers claimed the same long battery life with a 56wh battery back then ...

    You're spot-on about the bloatware, and that is some fascinating teardown of the GPU throttling issue, but I do think it's premature to dismiss this as a "Content Creator" platform based on the *entry level*, uncalibrated display. Any serious creator today who cares about color gamut is going to splash for the OLED (and yes, it is worth it). That said, this machine chews through Gigabytes of 45MP Nikon RAW images faster than the POS MacBook Pro M1 Max I replaced with it. I was pleasantly surprised.
    That said, I did upgrade the SSD, and did a clean install of Win 11 just to be thorough, and unfortunately, I still can't escape the Realtek/Wave-whatever sound latency hellscape. It seems Dell just isn't interested in resolving this.
    Finally, while the poly-covered carbon fiber deck does *feel* nice, it's a horrendous palm grease amplifier, so I covered it with removable vinyl that I cut on a Cricut. Not ideal, and a huge pain in the ass to do without bubbles, but at least it looks better than the swamp it was becoming (and I'm a pretty fastidious cat).

  • @seiyachan
    @seiyachan ปีที่แล้ว

    And no that's NOT carbon fibre... It's rubberized coating which will degrade into sticky mess in a few years. Otherwise it's a great durable machine. I have the 9550 from 2016. Battery is shitty too.

  • @dosgos
    @dosgos ปีที่แล้ว

    The 2015 XPS looks the same and has similar "challenges". After 8 years, I would have expected Dell to resolve these issues. That said, this is a thin & light laptop so the "marketing specs" can't be met for real world use. It is deceptive and a waste of good components IMHO.
