I just discovered your channel this weekend while doing research for our new house that will be built before the end of the year. Loving this series of videos documenting your solar + storage journey. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful video Anthony, thank you so much for your thorough look at the SPAN app. Tying the Tesla and SPAN apps together with a power outage really brought this video well above the other SPAN videos I've been watching, making it super helpful to me personally.
Convince Span to create an affordable subpanel that links to the main panel so we can expand upon its limited circuits. Not to mention that there is no full desktop app.
Its way cool. I can see myself geeking out with it. Need to evaluate cost. Auto load shredding seems to be main benefit. Manual load shedding is option 2. Go out and flip the breaker or use thermostat to turn off AC, dont run dishwasher. But you habe to be home. My home is oretty smart...I can remotely control most high current loads...pool pump, AC, poop heatoump, hot tub.
Your solar never connected or did I miss something. The reason I ask is because I get the point of the video but your time you have for backup would increase significantly on both the SPAN and TESLA app if we got to see your solar feeding into the batteries
You should get the gen2 Tesla energy gateway so that it matches all of your other stuff (plus it's faster/better). 😀 Thanks for the video.. I have a similar tesla system to yours and was looking for the granularity that you're showing span provides.
Great review and thank you for putting this together. I do have a question, are you able to turn on circuits based on availability of a power source? Example: Only run the pool pump circuit if there is enough solar energy to do so?
Great video showing Tesla App and Span App side by side. Quick question -- is the span panel getting solar and battery data from solar and powerwall breakers landed in the Tesla Gateway (or generation panel), OR, did you need to physically land solar breakers and Powerwall breakers in the Span panel itself? thx -- Jason C / California
Thanks JC the Span panel has an Ethernet cord that connects to the Tesla gateway so my understanding is that its pulling all the solar & battery data from there. We have no solar or Tesla breakers landed in the span panel.
We had a Tesla battery die when installed or shortly after. I was suspicious that the battery levels overnight seemed to drop a lot but there was no way of telling that one of the three batteries had died. No idea why a new battery was probably DOA but Tesla confirmed it was and replaced it. More delays an a reinstall (it was the one at the rear of a stack of three. That was only discovered by chance when the installers returned after a few months for some final reason. How can you get a reading for each battery as that would be very helpful. Is it possible Tesla could enable such a check in the app?
I like the span panel however where is all the data that your giving span going is it going directly to you, the compa y, third party? Is it prone to being hack? If you turn the breaker off on the app but it wont switch back on how can you turn it back on if the main panel states its on or does it switch to the off position aswell! 🤔
Daniel if you reach out to your local electrician he can source these spam panels from his local distributor CED green tech. He’ll need to get certified but the process is not hard at all and most electricians want to install them.
The selling point of the span panel is micromanaging your home's power circuits, and allows remote-control over individual circuits (not tandem breakers, though). The panel uses regular circuit breakers on top of its fancy electronics. At the time of this writing, I think you can expect to pay over 4K for the panel alone.
I asked the solar installer about a Span panel and I felt like they dismissed the idea by only saying oh, it costs $8k. Sounds like I should do more research.
I say a SPAN panel is well worth the investment for installation, particularly if adding big loads like EV charging to your home. The benefit is that you can have the SPAN panel automatically shed loads that may drain a battery quickly or possibly trip your main panel breaker. This is helpful for those that have 100 amp service and with a SPAN you could possibly eliminate the need to increase service level to 200 amp or higher. Sometimes a service upgrade can be around $2,000 but often if you need to bury a new service cable and upgrade disconnects, service panel, etc, savings could be much more dramatic. Sure, a SPAN panel isn't "cheap" but it gives you whole home energy monitoring and smart control of loads, helpful for many reasons.
Any idea how to show PowerShare gateway and Tesla universal wall charger 60 amp breaker that isn’t in the span panel but in the gateway? I am getting solar with powerwall3 and span. Already have PowerShare active.
From the information I have gathered right now PowerShare is only available on the Cybertruck and Tesla has not rolled it out to everyone. I know I am still waiting if you have it already I am interested to hear about your experience.
can I now charge my [powerwall right off the grid???? I'm facing a planned utility shutdown tonight for 12 hours and want to make sure my Tesla power wall is fully charged by 10 PM to last the night. many thanks
@@christinearmington our utility company, Edison, in southern California automatically charges my Tesla Batteries when they know a storm is coming. they do this to reduce the number of customers using the grid during storms. I didn't have to ask for it. It happened automatically
That's a random stuff I stumbled upon the TH-cam, good job in managing your power consumtion.

Appreciate it 🙏
Wow, this is such a great video. I am totally going to get the Span panel with our solar and powerwall install later this year.
Great review, Anthony! We love when homeowners and experts review our product, no holds barred. Awesome content!
Is SPAN an acronym?
Wonderful video Anthony, thank you so much for your thorough look at the SPAN app. Tying the Tesla and SPAN apps together with a power outage really brought this video well above the other SPAN videos I've been watching, making it super helpful to me personally.
Thanks for the feedback glad it was helpful.

Completely agree we need a bigger span panel with more circuits. I have brought this up to them I think a lot of people have.

Is your pool pump variable speed? Power draw seems high.
Also. 10 to 12 hours a day during the warmest hours are good for well maintained pools.

Good to know thanks 🙏

No Tesla app can do that for charging your car but I have not seen span do that.

I have 3 panels in my home...can a SPAN panel handle this? How many circuits per SPAN panel?

Very good and important to know. Thanks. 👍

I noticed that your Solar didn't kick back on is there a reason for that? Shouldn't the AC signal trigger the inverter to start back up?
I would love to get a Span, but the company has not responded to my request on several occasions! How can I get one?

Is it really worth the cost?
Seems neat and all, but isn't it safe to say I can do it all manually with a dumb panel by flipping breakers myself?

Is nice 👍 but the span still to expensive with no government help to buy it. Will way for more completion n better pricing
why did the solar panels didnt produce after you pushed the break down?
Full batteries?
Exactly batteries were full.

Should be like a storm mode situation (wonder how often that works). What did your provider do?

I love the Idea i don't love the price. They need to cut that price in half at least.
