I was just thinking about this the other day. I was tempted to do my friends nails FOR FREE! But nope, I charged full price and she didnt even hesitate to pay it. She just looked at me and said "friends support friends". 👍
My baby sister who really doesn't even care for nails supports me emotionally (she believes in me, never gave me any flack about changing from finance to follow my passion) and financially (anytime she sees interesting nail products she buys them for me. UV lamps, gel polishes, sanitation and PE, anything) and physically (when no one else would let me practice on them they did!) SO FOREVER FREE for her!
Same here. My mom, my daughter, and hubbys daughter are forever FREE. They do give me money towards products when I mention there's a sale and I'm buying stuff. They Always chip in to buy stuff.
I heard a makeup artist once say re: this and it was very insightful: If you are gonna do someone’s makeup (nails in this case) for free, they must understand that if a paying client comes through for that same time slot you’re gonna have to take the paying client because you are running a biz. And in booking a freebie, they must have a Plan B available in case a paying client comes thru. Don’t wanna do a contingency plan/Plan B?? Then pay me!! Period.
I just did my best friend nails and she tried to pay me I was like no girl I need to practice u helping me!! I just started nail school in March!! First set of tips & acrylic!!🎉🎉🎉
I only have one client/ friend that gets a discount. She was my very first, and is my most consistent - every three weeks and always gets a full set of encapsulated craziness! I don't charge her full price. She's my walking advertisement, though. She lets me try new techniques (which admittedly, don't always come out perfect). She works in a salon and she passes out my cards whenever someone asks who does her nails. For all of that, she pays less.
I find every one I know expects me to do their nails for free and on their scheduled, but have no problem paying someone they don't know. So done! Yes I'm a nice person and a good friend, but do you expect to work for free? I had a good friend with a restaurant, and I was always happy to pay full price because I wanted to support them.
THATTTTT PART!!!!! Pay $20 and complain about my schedule; but no problem paying $60 to a salon haha. That’s why once they leave me they pay full price if/when they come back!! 💯💯💯💯
Oh my god, nailed it! My business is from home due to my special needs child. And some people would note want to pay what I charge because they felt because I’m at home I have no expenses. I’ve gone through it! But when I was at the nail shop they would pay who $100 or $80 for their service. It’s such a slap in the face! It’s nice to know that you both know what it’s like! I mean customers that think me and them are good long time friends and they start giving me price suggestions for my own business when they don’t know what I pay to buy product and what expense I have to pay to Canada revenue at the end of the year they don’t know !!!
I do give my friends discounts if I have new products , new techniques or a new design I want to try. But they end up tipping really good so it balances out🤷🏽♀️
I had to cut off a friend the other day becuz of she was trying to mix friends and business together.. she started bring her family and family friends on it trying to get their nails for free also.. i was like hell no .. turns out she was trying to use me for her advantage.. posting shady stuff about me but i glad i got out
I have friends who do tattoos and they always talk about how everyone tries to be buddy-buddy with them to get discounted or free tattoos. But what their "friends" don't see is that is their job/ source of income. It happens with many industries and I think there are some occasions or certain people to do it for, however, you still need to support yourself so try not to let others take advantage of it.
I picked three spots when I was in school that would get $20 sets as long as they stayed with me in exchange for social media marketing. Two have went other places and that’s fine; but when they come back they will get charged full price :)) ❤️
Friends support friends! There are times that you help each other out but I don’t expect my friend to do my nails for free every single time I seat at her chair!
I couldn’t agree more on this video topic! I find it incredibly disrespectful when people just expect treatments or whatever to either be discounted or for free.. they should be trying to help your career grow! Also.. in love with the puppy!!!
It absolutely depends if you feel taken advantage of... In my experience good friends treat you well and value your time and efforts. Regardless whether you charge them or not they WILL either tip you very well, "donate" to the cost of product used, or are happy to pay you whatever you list as your price. It really is between you and you whether you charge your friends and family full price. If they don't like i,t and are sassy about it, they are more than welcome to look elsewhere for their services. I was taught to "create moments of magic" so every now and then I will throw something in or discount the full service. It is also a case by case decision and I may just want to treat them to something special with out expectation of reimbursement. As always do not give if you can not give, it will always eliminate the possibility of feeling like you are being taken advantage of. It's all about boundaries and sticking to what makes you feel comfortable so resentments don't build up.
Good point by Tracy- services are like retail. You wouldn’t walk into a clothing store and try to trade a bottle of wine or a favor for some clothing items. It doesn’t work that way. People should respect (and compensate you for) your time because you spent time honing your craft and spent money buying supplies. I’m not a nail tech, but I teach dance lessons for a living. When someone asks me for a discount I offer one for their first purchase, and for package purchases I offer regular discounts I can always point to. Also, if you are doing nails for a living, I agree with Tracy’s strategy of going through the appointment and then at the end you can decide how much to give, if anything. That way the client is already used to making an appointment and can see you acting professionally. If you open the door with a discount, that’s how their requests will start every time they want a refill 😆
This is so fun to watch you two. I think I am over April fools day. If I was a tech I would do family free and that is it. You’re in business and you can’t give it away. Thank you this is a great video. My friends would never ask or expect it.
Tummy rubbings!!! I almost want a puppy. Until I think about potty training and chewed furniture and the fact that I already have 4 senior dogs that are regressing into their second puppy-hood. My mother-in-law and I exchange services. She does my books and helps me with my taxes. I do her nails. My neighbor watches the dogs and chickens when we go out of town, she gets her nails done. It works out well like that, but I don’t like to just give my services away. I have to pay for my products. I have to pay for my education and licensing.
Anh look the cute baby loving life😍 I only do friends and family, it would be a problem 😂 I have one friend that i did for half the price 3 times because i got a lot of high end makeup from her for free. I told her up front that i did want to get payed for the products i used but she would not have to pay for my time and work. My mom is the only one i do for free, the rest pays full price. I had one aunt and niece that thought i would do their nails for free because i was a beginner and not fast enough. I told them i am slow but the end result is good and i have my practice hand and my own hands to practice on. I learned a lot from my former boss who was a very succesfull business owner, he had 4 salons and a lot of people working doe him. I was his branche manager on one location and had 8 people working in the salon, i was only 20 years old and had a lot of responsability. I always was a serious person, worked hard, learn verh fast. was nice to everyone but assertive, never complained and never asked for a day off. Boundaries are very important, in business and private! People don’t respect you if you let them decide for you. Be kind but assertive and clear, make rules and communicate them up front, set assertive boundaries, stay professional and don’t go in to the drama, be carefull what you share about yourself, learn to be a good listener, talk less;) and don’t let others determine your worth!
Yes u don't charge the woman who birthed you lol This reminds me of when I needed a practice model for a set of nails and I did this girl's nails for free. They took me a while but they turned out nice and then I regretted doing them for free. I thought I should of at least asked her to pay for the cost of product. When she messaged me the next time to do her nails I told her if Id have to charge her and she didn't even reply lol. This is the same girl who pays hundreds to get her hair done and always has money for everything she wants but didn't wanna pay me. Females will always have money for everything they want but want to be cheap when they can be. It was my fault though you set the tone for your value from the start and its hard to increase it after you set it very low or free from the start.
Omggggggggg!!! Look at that sleeping Koda!! 😍😍 Luckily, I only have 1 friend (the best) who has helped me out SO much! Literally the only one ever since I moved down here in New Orleans! Not doing this for a living yet but when I’m ready to start I can not bring myself to charge her but everyone else will definitely be 😁 If she wants to pay she can! 😃
What kind of advice do you have for pricing for people without a license learning from home? I haven’t charged ANY of my friends because I’m just unsure of what to charge. The nails I do for myself would be upwards of $60 because of full cover tips, length and shape, the no chip itself, then stickers and chrome powders or glitter. My good friend expects all the same stuff I do for my OWN nails, and only ever gets me a coffee or brings something else. Plus, it takes me like 3-4 hours anyway. How should I charge her or others? It’s only my side hustle, so it’s not like it’s my lively hood, but I also want to be able to start making money to cover my supplies and get new ones. Is like 25 a set okay, or just 15 for just a no-chip? I also get nervous that if I start charging, I won’t be able to practice as freely anymore with my girls. But after almost a year of doing mine and theirs without being paid, I need to start making my money back for it.
Yes but they should always pay anyways! I don't take anything from my friends free. They're the ones I would RATHER have my money than a salon or something.
Tracey do you leave the 3 nails off on one hand on purpose or did they pop off? I want my nails done but I can't do nails when I have them on. It's too hard. This seems like a fix to me?
I do commercial collections for a communications company and I’ve heard all of those excuses!!! People will agree to whatever with absolutely no intention of following through!! So frustrating!!! I hope you have dedicated staff to handle your accounts receivables. I can’t imagine being a business owner and dealing with all of that too!!!
I had a 🧵 🪡 sewing business and my extended family always expected (uncles) me to work for free when they didn’t work for free! They could afford to pay for their sewing.
I agree. Only my Mom is free and she still insists on sliding me cash. My closest friend I don’t charge her either. She has 6 kids and I rather not take money from her and besides.. our friendship is more valuable with how she is as a friend. Honestly.. everyone else has to pay me. I actually prefer not to take family and friends as clients.. it just gets sticky. If they insist.. they have to pay me though.
I do my mom and my sister free because my sister is my main support and anyway I wouldn't charge her mo matter what but actually my friends always pay me and I haven't had any issues with no pays yet. Thankfully
I think that friends who don't value u or ur business r not real friends! Charge them. Best friends who do value will say friends support friends and not expect anything from u. Also yay Habib for going to Tharapy
Only my daughter gets free nails in my buis . Nail supplies are too expensive. Sometimes I do free art on friends or clients if it was my idea . Just as a perk . But not always .
Can we talk about when we’re practicing because I practice on my sister all the time and I never charge her because I’m practicing but at the end of the day she still gets a full set and I used products on her so idk I’d like to know your thoughts on this
Good question. I'm doing the same and was wondering. Can we even charge even though we don't have a license? Or can we just charge for the products we use on our friend's, family, etc? These are the questions I have for them, not necessarily you.
All koda does is sleep last time he was past out too 😂 i do my moms nails for free and my 1 friend she has kids and i dont so id feel to bad .. Therapy is good everybody needs someone 💕..
My mom doesn’t even get a discount. To be fair, she insists on paying me because I’m just starting out. Also, she is my most difficult client. There will be a day that I won’t charge her.
What about long time customers? They can act this way. Expecting freebies. Don’t want to lose them so I throw things in for free way more than I should...
the question is, should I charge my WIFE 🤔? I may not be perfect but I'm using YN (quality products) and shes saving so much, she gets them every 2 weeks, full sets no fills.
I was just thinking about this the other day. I was tempted to do my friends nails FOR FREE! But nope, I charged full price and she didnt even hesitate to pay it. She just looked at me and said "friends support friends". 👍
Now that is a great friend!!! Congrats, glad you stood your ground. Maybe there is hope for me😅
