Absolutely agree that an uncomplicated menu is best. When I was opening up on my own for the first time, that was a priority to me because at my last salon, we got so many comments about how complicated our menu was. Make it easy for them! Also, yes pedicures can absolutely be a money maker! My business is pedicure focused, and I do all waterless, e-file services. There is a huge market for a clean, safe pedicure by a highly trained and educated tech who clients can trust with their health. One of the things in my pricing that is different from most is that I charge for polish. Not every client wants it, and I also have a lot of male clients. Polishing takes extra time and product, so if a client wants it, they can pay for it. Having it as an add on is helpful to my pocketbook, as well as my schedule/timing.
Yasssss Tracy!!!! My gf hates when I watch the meticulous manicurist 🤣🤣🤣 she’s so awesome though. I too find it relaxing and satisfying 💓 thank you guys for all you do!!
This gives me comfort in my pricing. I was afraid to charge more, but I know that I give great service. I'm in a suite now and I have a fabulous massaging chair, lighting, music of their choice....so my future clients will be paying for an experience vs just a service. You guys are awesome. ❤️
I plan to only do pedicures (I'm a Meticulous Manicurist Nail Academy student!!) I plan to use gel exclusively. I know plans change but it's my ideal situation.
Our menu is constantly evolving. We add or take away services based on client feedback or our own needs/wants. In the beginning we did everything now we are tailoring/rebranding to what we really want to specialize in. Loved this biz talk!
This was SUCH a helpful video. I've been thinking about getting my license later on this year and wasn't sure what I should be offering. I'm really comfortable with acrylic right now, but wasnt sure if I should be offering more just to get people in my chair. Anyway, thank you so much for such a great video!
Great video, I have gone the route of charging the same for gel and acrylic..I just recently re did my menu and simplified having a base price then adding to it. It is so different now with so many products being used...throwback to the day where it was a full set and a refill...cheers :)
I feel like location is a thing on pricing. I live in Perris California and I work from home so it's a dirt road and people get freaked out I'm also a beginner.
Overcome the atmosphere with excellent work and customer service. We live in a small east Texas town. We bought granite from a company in a location similar to yours. It's down a deeply rutted dirt road, dead cars & trucks in the front yard and you have to drive around the back🤔😒😒. Yep, it looks shady, scary almost like The Hills Have Eyes kinda situation 😒😒😱. But, they do amazing work,!!! Its a family run business. They installed our granite like it was for their own home!! I would recommend them highly regardless of the "atmosphere". Do your thing girl!😍😍. Consider telling clients about the "atmosphere" up front = no surprise then dazzle them with 1st class nail services and customer service like Nordstroms!!!
As a customer I prefer to pay more and have a very nice spa setting for my pedicures. I don't like the little hole in the wall that wants to charge the same price as the spa and even if it is cheap I would pay more for the spa. I do my own gel nails, but I love going for pedicures
I wanna cry when I hear how much people earn on nails in the US. we here can charge about $30 for a full set of gel nails (with nail art). and gel polish is much cheaper...
I have a question hopeful someone could help me out I just bought I gel trial kit from YN and I am wondering who do you clean your gel brush after doing a set?
overlay is when you are applying product over just your nail, no extension with forms or tips. artificial is adding anything to the natural nail, with the exception of regular polish.
Hi! Thank you for your advice. You are great. I just have a question for you, I want to start in my home with nails and on my area I think everybody work with gel, I don't know I see anybody offers acryl or dip powder... Do you think I could start with it to have more clients in start?
You can build a good clientele with either acrylic or gel. If you do the service well, the clients generally don't mind which product you use, as long as they look good & hold up. If you are working from home, we do recommend checking with your local state board to make sure you follow the rules & regulations for your state.
We have this problem in South Africa: People watch a few videos and then buy supplies and start their little busines. They tend to undercut all the qualified techs in the area. What to do there?? I mean, At Star Nails I had to do a four day course, before receiving my certificates.
Unfortunately there will always be those people that choose to do nails without the proper training and education. Just remember that these aren't your competition and customers that are looking for highly trained and skilled technicians will find you because they respect your skills and education.
"overlay vs extension" this is a bit confusing because years ago, Greg was referring to extensions AS overlays. so, what is an overlay in the context that Tracie is speaking on?
Sometimes Greg says that when he’s doing a full set. What I’ve come to understand: (from watching soooo many YN videos lol) he does the extended part on the form first and then he’s like see, now it’s just like doing an overlay, because the basic shape of a nail is there, so at that point just treat it as an overlay to finish building the nail. What Tracey means is just putting acrylic/gel over the natural nail with no forms/extending.
I disagree with your pricing strategy. You need to cover your overhead and be able to pay yourself a living wage! Too many techs live BELOW poverty level because they are in a suite charging strip mall prices.

We are one of the few salons that do gel X tips in the area we live in. We do Hot Stones on pedicures, facials and massage at the spa I work at.
Thanks for sharing! We hope you enjoyed this biz talk video.

This was so helpful. Thank you!
Love the idea of shortening the “menu”
Pls add the bloopers in at the end of video next time of you guys attempting the intro !! 😛😂
I needed this... Thank u guys

The hot stones are an instant $10-$15 upcharge and a renewable resource. My clients love them!
Hot stones with a pedi? I've only had them with a back massage but that sounds absolutely amazing! And like a great way for you to make money!
Great information

You could rent a booth at a salon so people feel more comfortable going to an established place/location?

I agree, it's about relaxing. And I hate it when they have big TVs on the wall with the news on! Not relaxing!
FIRST FIRST FIRST "-)
I so needed this topic guys!
Is it worth it to separate the gels like gel polish, hard gel, polygel or are they all just under gel and do I charge differently 🤔
I wanna cry when I hear how much people earn on nails in the US. we here can charge about $30 for a full set of gel nails (with nail art). and gel polish is much cheaper...
Can you do a kind of “reenactment” of your pedicures? I would love to see it.

What is your opinion on gel x? It’s all over tiktok
I have a question hopeful someone could help me out I just bought I gel trial kit from YN and I am wondering who do you clean your gel brush after doing a set?
If you look up young nails brush care they have a whole video about it
So I don't really speak nails so I'm wondering what's a overlay? What's artificial? Is it forms or tips 🤔
overlay is when you are applying product over just your nail, no extension with forms or tips. artificial is adding anything to the natural nail, with the exception of regular polish.

You set yourself apart with licensing and great photos of your high quality work. Also, the ppl that go to them shouldn't be your target clients

Overlay is on natural nail extensions are using a tip or sculpting out a longer nail

Off topic but, are you guys going to be at ibs Las Vegas this month?
we will not be
I’M THE C.E.O!!!🤣🤣🤣
as much as I like doing nails, I just cannot touch feet.
As a customer I’ll pay more for cleanliness, customer service, atmosphere, etc. and a lot of those things are simple to incorporate.
I disagree with your pricing strategy. You need to cover your overhead and be able to pay yourself a living wage! Too many techs live BELOW poverty level because they are in a suite charging strip mall prices.
Doing a pedi is never worth it for me... beauty school horror story. I also just don’t have the room in my suite yet.
Do tell
Story time!!!!!!
And when I go solo I’m not offering pedis
Amen to that. I've seen some things... Now I gotta know you if I do feet. So that's kinda reserved for friends
👀
I did not know Tracey was from slo omg!! I am in paso like 30 min away!🫶🏽
