Is Client Pressure Real?

  • Today Habib and Tracey talk about client pressure in the salon. What should a nail tech do if a client requests nail art that she is uncomfortable with doing? How should a nail tech handle a client who does not respect the policies she has in place?

    “How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
    Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
    Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.

    When I went from working full time as a nail tech to doing nails part time out of my home. I specifically did not let the 2 sisters I was doing, that had followed me from nail school, know that I was going to work part time out of my home, because they were just like Tracy was saying High maintenance and would expect me to drop what I was doing and fix a nail or do there nails, or they really needed a pedi right now. I just couldn't handle that. I loved them and I enjoyed them, however I couldn't keep them.

    I think Habib looks dashing AF no matter what he wears 😆 The man can put on an It costume & I’ll still be like, “Ooohhkaaaaay werk! 💕”. I might die from laughter but at least he likes it (assuming he did) & you get a kick out of it; everyone wins 😆😂

    This is a great talk on basically Standards vs Convictions. Not wearing a tank top is a standard, and maybe that changes in the future. Not putting a swear word on a nail would be a conviction, and isn’t something you’d ever change.

    I have let myself get pressured in the past, but nothing compares to this past year. I am also a CMP and have high risk clients that I choose to be super careful for. I have gotten cover shamed both ways. Yet, some of my same peeps that make sure that my environment is pristine are the same that don't want to wait for me to get a cover test. Its been a struggle, but it also forced me to create better boundaries. True topic! Love!

    This is a great topic. I am not a tech but no one makes me do something I am not comfortable with. I can see how this can happen. I think it is a good thing I am not a tech. I don’t care for pushy people. I do think you help so many people. Not everyone can stand up to others. This will help them. I sometimes need to pull back. Anyway I love the way you all dress. I am a comfy dresser. I hate dressing up. Thank you again.

    I think EVERYONE should be REQUIRED to work in the service industry before they graduate high school or something, like before they can begin the actual work force... Then people might understand how their actions affect others, ya know? I hope that makes sense.... I just LOATHE the way people treat the people who are taking care of them, ya know?

    This question is for Tracy. I am not a nail tech I am a client. I love watching you and Habib. My question is how do you tell your nail tech that their work is not consistent. There are times when I go in for a fill and I am digging out acrylic from under my nails for days, acrylic from under my cuticles, no apex, and the shape of my nails are not matching. The reason I continue to go to this nail tech is because she uses your products and They are the best.

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Telling your nail tech that your not happy can be an uncomfortable conversation but the best policy is to be kind but honest. She might not take it well but it’s better than paying for something you aren’t happy with and it gives her a chance to make the changes and keep you as a client.

  • @Steff.C
    @Steff.C 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What about if the client is asking for something that would be bad for them.... ie a length that is too long for their nails? Products (like acrylic) that doesn’t work for their nails? Them constantly breaking long nails but insisting on still having long? Pressuring to lay product over a nail fungus?

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You still need to work within your comfort zone.. for instance nails too long, they might be ok for this person because they never break them. You can tell them (if you’re comfortable) that you can try it and see if it works. Things like fungus, well that’s more about health and sanitation so most would just refuse. All of it has to do what you are comfortable with but also following your state board regulations

    Client expectations, wearability, Pinterest’s expectations, the pressure to reproduce exact replicas, etc . I have always been able to say no to something I am not able or not wanting to do. Or putting myself in a situation not wanting to be in.. it is my business and my art my craft, my say.. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I want my work to speak my talent and my ability and craft n comfort.

    First off, I love your boots, Tracey! Secondly, all these years, I’ve been wondering exactly who it was that decided certain words used in our language were considered “cuss” ,”curse”, or anything other than some kind of low-grade American slang? If someone wants me to try to put those choice words on their nails, I’ll certainly try. Who is it going to hurt? I may ask them to spell it for me. Over and over. Write it down. Show me where they would like it placed on the nail. 😂😂😂 That might help them change their course...

      @@youngnailsinc she just wants me to send her pics of my colour swatches, I have over 300 colours (including many of the maniQ colours 😉). I also have dozens of loose glitters to mix with. I guess I'm wondering if its worth it to lay everything out, take a pic, send it to her and then have to put everything away again.... Probably just answered my own question.
      So what would be a polite way of telling her no? Maybe telling her it would be easier for her to send me a pic of what she wants and I can match it from there?

    • @youngnailsinc

      @@andreakurjata8599 Yes, I was going to say having her send you what she is looking for and then sending back maybe 2/3 options that are closest is one way. Or maybe it's worth it to take a few photos of all your swatches not just for her but to keep on hand either for a website you have or instagram so other return clients and new ones can check out the colors you have available.

    Hey guys totally off the subject, but I have a question I'm sure you have the answer to.I have been giving my nails are rest from extensions and I still wanted them to look good so I did all of the necessary prep work and applied gel polish And for some reason the gel polish after maybe a day or 2 is peeling off in 1 sheet.I'm thinking it could be 1 of 2 things,It could be that I did not use a base coat 1st Or that the polish itself is not a good 1 which is strange to me because it is the 1 that most salons in my area use and I've never had an issue with it on artificial nails. It is the DND gel polish.If you have any suggestions or tips as to why it didn't stay or how to make it stay that would be really great.Thanks guys
