Heartbreaking when a launching accident occurs. I hadn’t heard of many ships launched after being fitted out and furnished.

It must have been utterly incomprehensible to those watching, a beautiful new liner turning turtle upon launch.
The _Vasa_ is the only other loss upon launching that springs to mind.

Well that's what happened to my son's Lego boat so now he just first builds the empty Hull then he starts adding a little bit of detail and then he puts it in the water and then finishes it

It wasn't entirely unusual for Italian ships to be launched nearly complete (I.E. with superstructure, funnels etc.) already fitted.
It was probably the LAST, though.

Such a pity, but it is from accidents that valuable lessons are learned. Happy to hear no mention of casualties.
I am a new subscriber. I have long been interested in the sea, like any proper landlubber, and find the older steamships, be they luxurious liners or tramp steamers, to have personality.

Yes I've read about this tragedy, seemed almost unbelievable, nice ship but the funnels seemed out of proportion or maybe it was the unusual position of the vessel as she lay towards the port side, I think I also read that they thought she might be top heavy but when you mentioned that she was already furnished, that may have contributed to the top heaviness, the whole building support of the ship looked very flimsy to me ,

Probably in my opinion the ship was to slim and with the funnels being placed already on top of the ship and also to mention that it's superstructure was pretty tall

To bad it could not be quickly back onto the slip way or towed to an open drydock

Why didn't they refloat and repair it?

That is what I was missing in the video - what happened after the capsizing. Reading the comments I understand the ship was scrapped and some parts were re-used.l

@@george_364 in the sister ship Principessa Mafalda most probably, engines, propellers, and propellers shafts. Mafalda sank after a shaft broke near Abrolhos, Brazil, 300+ dead.

Hardly what could be called a tragedy. At sea and full of passengers when you find the problem; that can be a tragedy. In port with nobody on it except possibly a few dockyard workers that had an hour to get off and 100 meters at most to swim (if there weren't small boats nearby anyway); that is bad news for the insurance company and bad press for the shipping line, but still not a tragedy.

    • @OldShippinglines
      @OldShippinglines  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Its A tragedy because there was so many expextations around this ship and then to see it fail i hope you liked the video tho😁👍🏽

Well, we have different ideas about what constitutes a tragedy as opposed to a failure.
But, yes I liked the video. Very informative. I presupposed that the ship was top heavy by design failure; ships have capsized on launch before. However your explanation makes sense and if that's what the authorities determined then I'll run with it.
And your English is good; proper grammar makes you understandable despite the accent.
