    Italian liner Principessa Jolanda sinks during launch because of defective ballasting and errors in calculations.Moreover many portholes were left open,and a donkey boiler exploded for the flood.The sistership Principessa Mafalda was launched two years later after extensive reduction in height.She was lost in 1927 for she lost port tailshaft in mid-ocean and successive flood could not be stopped.
    The wreckage of Jolanda was scrapped,engines salvaged were reutilised.Music is "Sunday",Jean Goldkette orchestra 1927,Bix Beiderbecke on cornet

    Principessa Jolanda had a sister ship (Principessa Mafalda) which was being built at the same site when Jolanda's mishap happened. They launched Mafalda with uncomplete superstructures to avoid similar failure.
    Sadly, the Mafalda also sank on October 25.1927 some 80 miles off Salvador do Bahia, Brazil, due to a catastrophic propeller shaft failure that damaged the hull. 314 out of 1252 died in this accident-the deadliest ever in Italian shipping-causing Mafalda to be dubbed the Italian Titanic.

      Titanic was able to stay more or less upright even while she was sinking. This ship however can't even stay upright when she's not sinking, and then sinks because of it.

    In the history of ocean liners from the late 1800s to the 1970s it seems there so many near misses, miscalculations, and outright disasters. Yet from an aesthetic viewpoint they were often beautiful and graceful and their interiors showed the best art and design of the countries that created them.

  • @carmelpule6954

    This is a case where the designer did not keep track with the manufacturer regarding the Centre of Gravity position due to the weight of the superstructure. If when a ship heals, the centre of buoyancy does not move out faster than the centre of gravity, the ship will be unstable. If all doors above the gunwale/deck were shut, that boat would still have floated at an incline to one side. So unfortunate that such elegant ships are lost because of such a minor misunderstanding of the basic principles of stability.
    I do not like this type of launching as when the high lift transom floats, the vessel would be held by the bows ( narrow) and the rear narrow end, and the maximum width which keep it upright is still out of the water offer no displacement, so at that position the vessel is liable to incline. If the sliding is fast enough and the stability factor good enough, the vessel will righten itself. If not, over she goes. Perhaps, ballasting any vessel before launching will give it a chance to live and then if all is well unballast it to that point where stability is favourable. Obviously the best issue is to design wisely before making the pretty stuff.

      Once again, a burger flipper critiquing a nautical engineer. This is very common with new ships not built in a drydock. In a drydock they can be fueled, watered and ballasted. With this method of launching this must be done after launch or it would be too heavy to slide down the ways. After the launch they can only be hauled in a drydock because they are too heavy

    The story I once read was that the IOLANDA had been 'overly greased' on the ways so that, when she was launched, she slid down like a greased pig, way too fast, and that caused the instability which capsized her.

    @annanoli I recall they had to flood Imperator's double bottom with cement to get her to stay upright. Someone once calculated, I don't remember where, that if we still built modern passenger vessels using the same materials as 100 years ago, most of them couldn't take a 10-foot wave without rolling over.
    Odd to think that those tall, fat ships we have nowadays handle so much better than the sleek-looking liners back then.

    I don't think it was common at the time to launch ships that were 100% complete. Maybe in Italy, but I know the British Olympic-class liners had to be fitted-out after launch, and that included installing the masts and the funnels.

      heelfan1234 why yes i do look up the lusitania and how the British basically put amo on her when they shouldnt have because thats breaking war laws which made the Lusitania a target im just saying the Germans arent just at fault Americans too

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Superior Vigil It is in total dispute what was on board the ship; the U boat did not know, but what was certain was that there were hundreds of women and children civilians.
      It was enshrined in convention that warning should be given so lifeboats could be launched before sinking a ship with vulnerable civilians
      There have been plenty of examples of British malpractice, but I'm afraid you chose a very poor and inadmissible one, according to historians on both sides of the first world war divide.
      More research needed I think, if you are to come up with cogent arguments ;)

    They got real smaart when the built her sister; launched her and THEN fitted her out, as is done with all large ships. Even battleships were launched without their gun turrets. A ship designed with 35,000 ton 'standard' displacement would be riding high in the water at launch. From a production standpoint this made sense; ships had to be built while inclined on the ways; this complicated all measurements. Far easier to complete the work while the vessel is on an 'even keel."

    @2ndOfficerCHL top heavy liners were quite a common problem of the day. german IMPERATOR was always listing p & s. in some cases they har to cut off funnel tops. just imagine at the end of a crossing,with coal bunkers almost empty as well as DB's

    @annanoli She was an American ship that sank in 1915. She was built badly and spent 12 years of her life threatening to capsize until she finally did one day, at a dock on the Chicago River, as she was preparing to take people on a river cruise. 844 people drowned.
    Before the sinking, she was sold to a new owner, and the previous owners posted a sarcastic newspaper ad offering a reward to anyone who could prove that she too top heavy to be sailing. Needless to say, no one took it seriously.

    One would have expected the Naval Architect to have been fully aware of any high centre of gravity issues with his design!
    Suprising that the ballast couldn't have been trimmed to counter the initial listing before it becoming uncontained and doomed the vessel.

    Really? They left the portholes open during the launch? They had a boiler running during the launch? There were people on board during the launch? Were the people who made and launched this ship just like "Fuck common sense, because YOLO."?

      There has been worse incidents. Look up the "Sultana" (1865) and the "Eastland" (1915).

    The ship was light,allright,they were probably afraid to have too much weight on the slip- The metacentric height was reduced as in all those ships,to stay on the safe side the sistership was modified in her upper decks. Notwithstanding this i think that with a proper ballasting the vessel wouldn't have taken that list,and nothing would happen

  • @annanoli
    @annanoli  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    No,the shipyard is still in operation. the wreckage was removed very early,and the engines were fit on other ships

  • @annanoli

    @2ndOfficerCHL i don't think so...the GZ was too reduced,the ship took a list beyond recovery,the open portholes only speed up the sinking...what happened to SS Eastland?

  • @annanoli

    @Fischer0Dude You got a point.
    however that was the only tragical mishap of that yard which is still in operations now. a bad luck strike happens...at the time the accident was considered a national tragedy, and'i'm sure that nobody felt the whole affair as "silly".
    The sistership was launced succesfully next year,with reduced height and correct ballasting.
