  • The Principessa Mafalda had been the flagship of the Lloyd Italiano line, but as a pre World War 1 ship in 1927 her glory days had faided. She was to take one last voyage across the Atlantic before being relegated to more coastal travel. Unfortunately it was a voyage she would never complete. Her disaster would bring the phantom of the Titanic back to the public eye with its terrible and senseless loss of life.

    Hello! I am Italian and after the Mafalda disaster we have an Italian famous phrase “Affidabile come la Principessa Mafalda” that means “As trustworthy as Princess Mafalda”. The two ships were also famous because apparently they were the first ships to have a salon that is as high as two floors. By the way the reason of why the ship was still moving even though it was sinking it is probably due to the fact the captain tried to make the steam go out from the boilers but unfortunately the steam valves didn’t work properly so he was forced to keep the ship running otherwise there would have been a boiler explosion.

      Amazing how shipwrecks have a way of making their way into a language. I have heard doing something pointless as referred to as "arranging deck chairs on the titanic"

      I had not read anything about the steam valves not working but that makes total sense. What a nightmare set of mechanical failures to experience all at once.

      Yes, there are a few. Lots of fishing boats but several gold rush stories.
      The Normandy, Rex, Bremen etc are favorites, but there are so many more with stories. Some never-sank but had interesting adventures before being turned into ammunition or reefs.

    Italian crew and passengers?

    • @theshipwreckarchives
      @theshipwreckarchives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The main divide on the ship seems to have been a class one. The third class passengers were close to the crew quarters and therefore had many chances to hear the more and more concerned crew talk about the poor condition of the ship. This caused a lot of anxiety in third class that turned into full blown panic when the ship actually started to sink.

      That was due to a high center of gravity though, which I would assume would have been noted if it was a consistent problem on the Mafalda, unless they had done something that changed the weight distribution of course. I freely admit there are things we just couldn't find the answers to with this wreck while we were doing our research.
