- The length of a postdoctoral research position can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the field of research, the specific project or experiments involved, the funding available, career and the individual goals of the postdoc researcher.
Typically, a postdoctoral research position should lasts between one and three years. But, it lasts for 5-10, even 15 years in some cases. It may be possible to extend the position for additional years (depending upon funding) to complete the task, but it should be planned very carefully keeping career goal in mind. Postdoctoral research fellow who don’t achieve academic positions (asst. prof.) after 5-10 years, most of the time they end up start in industry from scratch or lower ladder.
It's also worth noting that postdoctoral research positions are intended to be temporary training period, transitional positions that help researchers gain additional skills and experience before transitioning to a permanent research or academic position. However, the length of time spent in a postdoc position can vary depending on the individual's career goals and circumstances.

Academic and industry Skills are totally different.
Bitter but true- No wants to hire PhD with longer postdoc.
Early entry in industry is better than later.
Financially you gain more in industry but less stability compare to academic.

Thank you for the information. I got one postdoc associate position at Fox Chase Cancer Center...I want to move in industry as soon as I qualify for the same. I did my PhD (defense on coming 20 days) from IIT Indore on coinfection of H. Pylori and EBV in gastric cancer...meanwhile I got postdoc offer in senescence like properties of AML. My superviaor explained me that I am looming for to understand the senescence like properties of AML and simultaneously you also handle some small project. Can you please explain switching from infection biology to drug discovery is worthy? I have no problem in understanding of project of AML.

Actually my Visa stamp in the passport shows that "Section 213(E) does not apply (INDIA)" but my DS 2019 shows that the 2 year home rule is valid. So what should I consider to be true for my case. I have contacted the ISSC office and they say that you have to confirm from the Home Land Security office. Kindly help me in this regard if you know better. Thanks.

However, I am now considering a career change and would like to work in biotechnology. If I pursue a second master's degree and Ph.D in biotechnology, how would the timeline work if I aim to join the industry afterward?
