    Standard saying:
    MONEY SAVED IS MONEY EARNED.
I am a normal middle class person, have 2 children. I had set a target that I will save atleast 25 % of whatever I earn.
I was able to give both of them good education in India & abroad. One is studying PHD from Johns Hopkins University, another studying MEng in Germany.
Hopefully both will be able to establish themselves.
    Saving is must.

Thanks for the information Santosh Ji, This could help me plan for PostDoc in US.
In Finland the room rent is cheaper compared to US , we could manage all the expenses within 2000€ for a family with a child. Here, Child education/daycare is free. Insurance is quite cheap (Nearly 320€ per person), and car expenses are same as in US. Food expenses are sometimes costlier than US.

    Santosh ji
    Good evening.
Being indian my thinking is also like you. Beti jo UCSF join kar rahi h. Waha bhi housing ki problem aa rahi h but UCSF housing mil rahi h. Two bed room apartment me, ek room ke 1250 dene pad rahe h. Extremely costly for new postdoc. Very useful information. God bless.

I think you forgot to mention on important point......look for city or state which is cheaper. Give example of my room mate, he had two offers, 75k from California, 54k in Kansas City. First he thought he would take the California offer, but when he went looking for apartment, he found even with sharing he needs to pay 1700 USD if wants to stay close to the University. Even though he was very much interested in California offer, he just could not afford living there on postdoc salary. So for postdoc on tight budget, target mid west cities.
