No, they don't, don't get soak in the myth, the bite test that resulted 691 psi was from a sub adult lion that was tested in the wild, lions have biteforce over 1,000 lbs!

I know it's an extremely dangerous trap that wildlife can be hostile from being curious in no time, but the eyes, ears, and all the facial/muscular expressions suggest no imminent hostility. Actually yes. A single hyena can take an adult weeldabeast down and it has been observed. They can also crush their skull ease.
Not even lions mess with them if they can help it. If theres one alone they mihht but if theres a pack of them theyll stay away.
They can also kill an adult male lion. Thats a little more difficult.

Hyenas laugh when they’re stressed and hunting. This one is just curious.
Not when they're hunting. Attacking, maybe, but hunting? That requires a bit of sneaking. It's also a sound of submission. If a larger one snaps at another trying to grab some prime bits, it will back off, laughing.

The real scary thing about hyenas is how intelligent they are. They have an intelligence level right up there with crows and chimps, so about as smart as a human elementary schooler. This means hyenas can be extremely flexible in strategies and responses, rather than having fixed action patterns. Even more impressively is they have a somewhat cooperative society where hyenas who know certain knowledge or have figured out a cognitive task or how to solve a puzzle or developed a skill will teach this to the other hyenas so that they too can know what to do. They also recognize lineage and inheritance, having a concept of parenthood and relation. A hyena is not a witless walking stomach, a hyena is a highly intelligent animal with a lot going on that acts calculated and deliberately, reasoning its way through problems. A hyena conducting a predatory attack on you has judged you, analyzed the situation, and come up with both a main plan and alternative methods of attack; it has thought about you how to kill you and has decided how best to do it. It’s not like a crocodile lunging at the nearest moving item because it’s hungry and in reach, a hyena makes a calculated intelligent attack.

Yeah, but they're also social mammals that play with each other, care for each other etc. within the family group. And our animal brains recognise those traits in other mammals because they're based on the same origin. So when a hyena is being curious we see it as it is. They're not just savage predators.

I remember meeting one of these guys at a zoo during a school field trip ages ago. We were told multiple times that they were still technically wild animals and NOT to try petting them under any circumstances. One of the younger ones did this right in front of me, so while nobody was looking I gave it a quick head scritch
