Marice Cheeks averaged about 12 pts a game, but was a great defender. Played in a big market with Dr. J and he got in. Gus Williams was overlooked his whole career and should also be in the HOF. He only got selected as an all-star twice, but was the leading scorer for those Sonics teams every year. Also, led the Sonics in steals and assists most years. His career stats of 17.1 pts 5.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game are nearly identical to Scotty Pippen. Gus Williams also should have been the MVP of the 1979 Finals, he averaged 29.0 pts per game during the '79 Finals. In his 6 years with the Sonics he played in over 70 playoff games and averaged 25.2 pts per game for the Sonics in the playoffs during those 6 seasons. Also, in the 1981-82 season he was selected 1st Team All NBA along with Magic Johnson, recognized as one of the two best guards in the whole NBA that season. He also led all scorers in the 1982 all-star game with 22pts 9 assists and 2 steals. He would have been selected MVP of the '82 all-star game had the Western all-stars won the game, but they lost 120-118. Gus Williams was also selected as a 2nd Team All-NBA for the 1979-80 season, which recognized him as one of the top 4 guards in all the NBA that season, yet he wasn't selected to the all-star team for some reason for that season. Gus Williams also held out and missed the entire 1980-81 NBA season due to a contract dispute with the Sonics, which was in his prime years and surely cost him an all-star selection. Gus Williams being snubbed in the all-star game selections were due primarily because Dennis Johnson was always selected along with Jack Sikma in those years and because the Western Conference was packed full of great guards during those years, they didn't want to select two guards from the same team....David Thompson, George Gervin, Magic Johnson, Paul Westphal, Otis Birdsong, and Dennis Johnson. Gus should have been at least a 5 or 6 time all-star selection during his career. At the time Gus Williams retired in 1987, he was the all-time NBA steals leader. I believe he is now around 15th all-time on that list. Anyway, Gus Williams' teammates Dennis Johnson and Jack Sikma made the Hall-of-Fame and Gus was the best player on that Sonics team. I believe I read somewhere that Gus Williams is the only player to be the best player on a Championship team that never made it the Hall-of-Fame. Anyhow, Gus Williams isn't the only player to be snubbed by the HOF. Walter Davis, Bob Love and many more have also been overlooked. Hopefully someday, they will all get in.

There were three great small forwards who joined the NBA for the 1977-78 season: Bernard King, Marques Johnson, and Walter Davis. And of the three of them, WALTER DAVIS (called the "Greyhound" by Brent Musberger) was originally the best player and biggest star. He was such a smooth player, just beautiful to watch. Those mid to late 70s Suns teams were also a very good team which played beautiful basketball. This 78-79 team had a team of All-Stars in its entire starting lineup! Center Alvan Adams, forwards Truck Robinson and Walter Davis, and guards Paul Westphal and Don Buse. And the Seattle team here which later won the title had so many great players too: DJ, Gus Williams, Jack Sikma, John Johnson, Lonnie Shelton, Fred Downtown Brown, and Paul Silas were all All-Stars during at least 1 point in their careers. SEVEN past, present or future All-Stars on 1 team! Contrary to what so many are told, GREAT BASKETBALL was also being played in the NBA in the years (1974-79) after Chamberlain, West and Oscar retired and just before Magic and Bird entered league. Aside from the players here, and also counting the ABA as well prior to the 1976 merger, you had legends like Jabbar, Dr. J, Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Rick Barry, Bill Walton, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Pete Maravich, Bob Lanier, Bob McAdoo, John Havlicek (who had just retired in 1978), George "Iceman" Gervin, David Thompson, Bobby Jones, George McGinnis, and others. Maybe the ratings and attendance weren't so high as in later years, but the game itself was fine. I was directed to this video by an article that named Davis as a player that Jordan admired. I am old enough to remember watching Davis play in the NBA on television before Jordan came into the league. He was exciting on both ends of the court and I see a lot his game in Jordan's early years, the steals, the post-up-up and under moves and fakes to get a better shot, the speed. Early Jordan was a lot like Davis on steroids--- bigger hands and higher vertical. We forget that there were fantastic players before the nineties, let alone the turn of the century. Today's players coming up have so much access to video of the favorite players from the near and distant pass that it is easier to deconstruct a player's game and absorb what's useful from each...
Outside of Clyde Drexler he was the fastest dribbling non-point guard I have ever seen. He would just beat the entire team downcourt for some easy baskets.
The Suns back then were a great organization, always drafted well, were incredibly well coached and extremely disciplined, McLeod isnt talked about anymore, but from 75 to 83 he, Dr. Jack Ramsey and Lenny Wilkins were absolute artists with their coaching. All 3 teams were deep as Hell and every olay was run to perfection. The only modern coach whom I see that fits that mold is Brad Stevens.
Absolutely. You named some excellent coaches, who truly made a difference for their teams. Some will mention "rings", but they didn't have Bird, Magic/Kareem. Which kinda made it unfair for the rest of the league. Or Moses, either.

And when David Stern approached the podium for the Suns pick, the fans were chanting "Just say no" to the draftee! I knew, then, that Walter Davis, as great as he was, was not getting into the Hall......!
You know, just watching this, Don Buse was an underrated PG of his era. Classic distributor 1st, who could play D and hit the open J. Did his job and kept everyone involved. 2 time All star (ABA and NBA) I believe.
That was a great series...walter was dominating along with westphal....Seattle had a team that was going to be good for years to come but made terrible decisions later on that cost them also Magic showed up and everyone in the west was finished.

He was never the same superstar he was at Phoenix. And DJ kept expanding his game at Phoenix. Then Sonics had a salary dispute with Gus Williams at a time they could ill afford it.

Walter Davis is still the Suns All-Time Leading Scorer and averaged 19 points a game over his 15 year NBA career, which included 6 All-Star games. When he retired he was the 18th leading scorer in NBA history. That is pretty consistent. A great player and a great career. A great person too.

He didn't get enough credit for that. Known as the "greyhound" and a great pure shooter, he was an excellent passer as you mentioned.

He (Hubie) was. But some guys just couldn't take him. Ramsey, Wilkens and McLeod didn't seem to have that issue. Not much anyhow.
McLeod also vastly overcoached and unlike Wilkens and Ramsey never won a championship.
