- I'll be adding commentary and more clips to this periodically so be on the look out for other versions, but here is good chunk of Jerry West highlights.
Listed only 6-3 (though West claims he actually stood about 6-4.5") Jerry West was one of the most complete players to ever play the game. Possessing lightning quick reflexes and one of the purest shots of all time, Jerry West could pick apart any defense. He also put his impressive 6-9 wingspan to good use blocking shots and stealing passes at a very high rate. West could do it all. Today his image is seen everyday by millions as the silhouette of the NBA Logo - a symbol of his greatness.
For everyone here that thinks he wouldn't be able to dribble today, you're wrong. He played in a time where your hand had to be on TOP of the ball. Anything on the side was illegal. In fact, most players today would have to tighten up their handle and not carry so much. And he was a deadly shooter and great denfender and competitor. No doubt we would be great today.

Reasons why he'd be deadly in today's game and put up similar numbers in today's NBA's pace:
Jerry West was an exceptional two-way player which is rare in today's game:
West would be relisted as 6'3 in modern shoes with a FREAKISHLY long 6'9 wingspan which allowed him to touch the top of the square.
**Offense
1. Quickness and the ability to change pace.
2. Probably the BEST 1-2 midrange dribble pull-up jumpshots in the history of the game(including Jordan, Kobe, KD, and T-Mac).
3. Deadly turnaround jumper
4. Lethal fallaway jumper
5. Ability to finish with both hands at the rim
6. Perfect fundamentals (bank shots off the glass)
7. Pump fakes off the dribble (imagine this is where Jordan and Kobe got theirs from)
8. Knockdown shooter
9. Catch and shoot
-- High IQ playmaker
10. Ability to shoot off screens
11. Movement without the ball
12. Ability to drive and kick to open teammates (playmaker badge)
13. Throws perfect bounce passes to rim cutters
14. Zig zag crossover with the right hand(didn't need a right to left crossover to shake up defenders) but makes up for it with spin moves, behind the back dribbles and give and go
15. Protects the ball, nothing fancy, but very hard to rip, less turnover-prone which means, unlike Westbrook or Harden you want the ball in his hands in clutch moments.
16. 4th quarter takeover ability.

18. High IQ defender, basically elite during his playing days.
19. Wants the ball on the defensive end more than anybody else
20. Plays tight, man-to-man defense
21.. Plays the passing lanes like a hawk( Iverson, Jordan, Scottie)
19. Ability to strip the ball from in front of the defender(Kahwi, Jordan, etc).
20. Chase down blocks(the LeBron of his era for guards).
I can't compare West to anybody in today's game. Offensively in terms of his size Steph, Kemba and Kyrie put up similar numbers in terms of points scored to assists ratio but one the defensive end he'd have no peer in today's game at his spot. West was all over the court on the defensive end which would probably make him the game's premier two way player at the SG position. I always put an emphasis on two-way players being the best because basketball is a two-way sport.
In West's own words, he was 6' 4.5" barefoot which would put him over 6'5" in basketball shoes. His listing at 6'3" has always been incorrect - they weren't so obsessed with measurements in those days as they are now. Having seen him play, I agree. Jerry was a tall guard yet was a jet. The combo of those two physical attributes along with his high level skills made him unstoppable, my favorite player ever.

I had a conversation with a fellow who ridiculously claimed that Jerry West and Oscar Robertson wouldn't succeed in today's game. That's insane! People just don't know just how good West was..
That person does not know basketball well.
Jerry West had great defense and was a great passer, great shooter and a great scorer. Was a good rebounder too.
Oscar Robertson could make a shot from any spot out to 20 ft, great passer and a very good rebounder. 6'4 and 220.

The sport and league owes Jerry thanks for an entire career well done. Same for his great teammate Elgin. BEST duo ever.
Tremendous player. Such a well rounded skill set. One of the most dangerous shooters of all time. Could stop and pop on a dime as well as anyone. Utilized screens as well as anyone. Protected the ball as well as anyone. Was one of the best at playing out of the triple threat position. Was one of the clutchest performers ever. Was a fantastic defensive player. Could play both the point and 2 guard equally effectively.
You name it, he had it. A fundamental master.
Morgan Lee If steals and blocks were officially kept in his playing days, I think West would've finished in the Top 5 in steals every year. And probably Top 5 in blocks by a guard, too. JW's long arms & quickness made him one of the best defensive players in history.
Only player from a losing team to be named the Finals MVP.
People don't really understand just how difficult it is to stop those sudden perfect form jump shots, especially from a guy with such long arms.
The first footage from the other end of the court during the All Star Game is a perfect example of how fast and high he got up to shoot.

To me, Jerry West is the greatest all-around guard I've ever seen. He was a great defender that had fantastic intuition and instincts and he played so hard. I've never seen a guard get so many steals. He was a great passer that led the NBA in assists while averaging over 25 ppg. He wasn't physically powerful yet he was an excellent rebounder for a guard. IMO he has the best pull up jumper ever - of all the best guards ever he is the best shooter with the possible exception. of Steph. Jerry didn't have any weaknesses as player and fans today are calling for somebody else to be the Logo?
@@jingqi9106 John Stockton is the end-all -be-all of defensive guards imo. Jerry was very formidable in his era tho and used his beautiful handles to his advantage defensively when transitioning

Best and purest mid-range jumper in the history of basketball. Technically perfect, lightning release and nearly unblockable. Every young player should learn from it.
I like watching JW to see the later influence on Jordan. Jordan really was a taller, springier version of this guy, with a bit of Dr. J tossed in for theatrics (read: dunks). But the bread and butter move of West really was the bread and butter move of Jordan. You can see why he was often compared to West coming out of college.

Jerry West was one of the main reasons why the Lakers were such a successful franchise. He was a great player and has always been a great executive. He plays an important role in the success of Golden State Warriors today.

Jerry West would succeed in any era. His basics were second to none. His midrange shooting is the best i've ever seen. Jordan copied it

Like if he was born in 1980 he would be alot better its better food its ymca,24 hour fitness. just never could just go get a workout in as a kid. this man retired in 74 and has the the 5 best ppg ever at 27ppg. If you are talking about undefeated in Finals appearances, which the Bulls are, you are also incorrect. The now defunct Washington Bullets have a perfect NBA finals record as well.
West/Chamberlain went 69-11 and won 33 games in a row, the all time record. That was against tougher teams, as well and with no 3 point line for easy shots. Defense was more physical, rules were tougher and the talent pool was not nearly as diluted as it was when the Bulls were winning.
West and Baylor. Chamberlain didn't join them them until 1968.

Had a guy that could block my shots well. So I got the ball and right hand dribbled past him and made a layup.

Jerry west is one of my all-time favorite players. This man succeeds in everything he does…literally. Had ice in his veins, lived for those moments at the end of games, played both sides of the ball at the highest levels and was a class act. What ur peers think of u says a lot and Mr. Jerry west was that guy.
I had my very first "brush with fame" when I met Jerry West at a personal appearance in Seattle while he was in town to play the Sonics. The appearance during the day was at a local department store (The Bon Marche', which was later acquired by Macy's). They had a basketball hoop set up in the store and West was giving shooting tips and giving a brief clinic to a bunch kids all hoping to get a glimpse of West. He needed a couple of volunteers and he brought me out from behind the ropes to provide tips for improving my shooting. I was lucky enough to have Jerry give me several shots and then provide some pointers. Will never forget that day.

West could dribble with either hand just fine. I agree that Cousy, Havlicek and many other 1960s greats were obvious one-hand dribblers, but West had a change of direction that was very good. Heck, the Ice Man couldn't go to his left, either, but both he and West had no trouble dropping in 30-40 points with efficiency (i.e. high shot percentage) in addition to scoring at crunch time. Nice defensive highlights, too. West was a helluva an athlete and his All-Defensive Team awards were well deserved.

I've seen clips of Havlicek doing a dribbling exhibition with both hands as well as all the fancy stuff too, of course those guys could do all that, but it was discouraged to do so in games when they were coming up and they called double dribbling n palming back then, so it just wasn't part of their style
They didn't see that first 44 seconds west is exclusively going to the left with left hand
But Cousy and Havlicek both dribbled with both hands lol. Havlicek did it more often in the mid to late 70s because ball handling rules were becoming less strict as time went on.
@@handlebucket6285 Well said. I agree that Havlicek could handle the ball better during the 1970s, one of the reasons he was so good at those penetrating leap-and-leaner shots. Cousy was the premiere point guard of his time and heavier restrictions on palming/cupping the ball made it difficult to dribble as effectively with both hands.
6-2.75 w/o shoes with a 6-9 wingspan. For a comparison, Russell Westbrook is 6-2.25 w/o shoes with a 6-7.75 wingspan. Jerry West would probably be listed 6-4 today - most players today list based on a rounded up version of their height "in shoes" and modern shoes are very thick, 1 to 1 and a half inches.

@@mikegillins4992 No doubt about it, especially because the rules and the way the game is called today favors the offense much more. I saw West play a lot and is still my favorite player ever. Baylor and Barry were scoring machines and great all around players also and were fun to watch play.

It's crazy how much Kobe has took from West. I remember him saying in an interview that he stole some moves from West, but appears he stole A LOT from the Logo: the way they pull up, slash to the lane, drive baseline and finish, how they crave the last shot (but West is much better). Kobe is taller and flashier, but his shot selection is worse. I don't see why the media compares Kobe to the false GOAT, Jordan, when he clearly took a lot of his game from The Logo!
Jerry, for some reason, was always listed at 6' 2", when he was actually 6'4", with really long arms, and quicker and more athletic than people realize. He also doesn't get credit for being one of the greatest shutdown defenders of all time. Jerry was a beast during his time, and he would be a beast today.

Is there another player in the history of the game that could pull up and hit his j either going to the right or left as well as Jerry? I don't think so. Jerry was so quick at getting his shot off - most players need to create space, Jerry used quickness. People don't understand what a dominant player he was.
They don't. He scared the hell out of every team in the league. Only Jordan is superior at the position. And not by a whole lot.
Besides being a clutch scorer, West was also an excellent passer. When Sharman asked him to switch over to point guard, Jerry led the NBA in assists per game and still averaged 25 ppg.

He did revolutionize his position. First 7 footer PF who was basically a pure shooter who put up great numbers, 25/10 in his prime in regular season, 28/13 in elimination games with very efficient percentages from the field and especially from the freethrow line. Also taking into account that he came from our shitty minor league and needed 2 more years to develop I can take only my hat off for him.
Now if West were to play in today's game he would be even better now because he would also have a crossover to go along with that very quick pull-up.
Jerry West is another one of those underrated players now. He was a great player in that time I could only imagine what his scoring avg would be if he had a 3pt line to work with. I know for sure one of his shots in this video would be a 3 by today's rules and I don't think Steph Curry could have pulled off that shot with the defender that tight on him like that defender was on West.
He was dribbling with his left. Watch the vid again. Its not a flashy dribble. The 1st 8 shots was off the dribble with his left. You're all drunk. Also Iverson almost always goes to his right yet nobody told him "hurrr durr cant dribble left". Instead he is regarded as one of the best ball handlers.

I like to see how Jerry West was one of the basketball player that really ahead in its time !!
If he played today, he would be great, but he would also have to tweak some of his moves to adapt to this new style and advanced evolution of basketball, he would have to tighten up his dribble, and clean up his crossover, because nowadays his old high dribble would get slapped away or swiped. I don't see how he wouldn't be able to adapt and evolve with the game, going by the talent in display along with his court vision and IQ.
Walt Frazier was as good defensively as Gary Payton, he could not swipe the ball from West. To see a really high dribble, look up Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. Guys couldn't swipe from him either. The modern player today would have even more trouble adapting to the dribbling restrictions of the old school, no "palming" or "carrying" the dribble.
No one really knows how great he do. The thing is, players today are more athletic, faster, quicker, and better.

Probably the most skilled player of all time, best shooter of all time. Great defense player is an understatement. Averaged 27 ppg without the 3 pointer!!!! Would average 35-40 ppg in today's era. We marvel at steph curry these days but Jerry's been doing it since the 60s.

Jerry West is the prototype "complete" shooting guard - Kobe probably got to study a lot of his game film once he became a Laker so that he could master the moves and the footwork. Plus, West (as the GM) probably acquired Kobe because he saw so much of himself in young Kobe (the work ethic most importantly). The people who fixate on Kobe to Jordan comparisons are probably unaware how West played and how similar Kobe is to him. Kobe has at least as much West in his game as he does Jordan

What's interesting is that he does not 'flap' his wrist after the shot, which is now standard. He more like pushes the ball towards the rim, keeping his wrist straight. Also, the dribbling in that era was so different. Almost looks a bit like how beginners dribbel the ball.

i agree 100% for sabonis...if he join nba in his prime and before his injuries would probably be top 10 centers ever...i remember he absolutely dominate d.robinson in the olympic games in 1988!

As a high school student I was fortunate to see Jerry West play in the West Virginia state high school basketball tournaments. In my memory he scored many points with a hook shot playing for East Bank High School.
