Not only one of the greatest football players, but also one of the greatest MEN to ever play The Game. Rest in Peace, Walter. God bless you, Lamont 🙏❤️
Walter Payton was my favorite football player. I remember when he announced he had liver disease was such a devastating day for me. Now this fall my son has the honor and the privilege to attend Walter Payton High School . Number one high school in Illinois . Number five in National ranking USNews 2022. Rest easy Sweetness.
Thanks for sharing. My former husband, Bears receiver, Willie Gault and I loved Walter. His wife, Connie, is a beautiful sister-friend of mine. RIHeaven, Walter. You are dearly missed.
I’ve always thought of Walter Payton as kind of a Rocky version of a player in the NFL. At 5”10 and 200 lbs he wasnt that big, but he sure had heart, and could often snatch an easy victory from those larger than him. It’s funny, many years ago i used to think that 45 (the age he passed) was old, but as someone pushing 40 now, I now know that 45 is a very young age to die. Rest In Peace to this great man.
He was the greatest running back to ever play in the NFL. I remember the interview when he publicly discussed his illnesses and his fear of dying. It literally broke my heart because he was my hero as a kid.
And their coaches had Fridge score a touchdown instead of Sweetness. His TD passes were typically a play where he'd swing wide and take a pitch from the QB, the defense would swoop towards him and he'd stop and throw a pass to a player that was left open by the defense. The half back pass play. He and Barry Sanders were unbelievable players. Time flies, I've made it to 57 and have no idea how.
@@jefferycampbell8724 Yes,that was weird why the Bears didn,t let Payton score that Touchdown. There was a Local Sportscaster in Chicago,Les Grobstein told the reasons why.And Grobsteinsaid he never could forgive Ditka for ignoring Payton in that Super Bowl. All the hype was on Fridge Perry and Jim McMahon.
Walter Payton The greatest NFL Player of all time. Chicago Bears Running Back with a studder step that made the defense confused & breaking tackles made the defense think twice. Nicknamed "Sweetness" & a True Hall Of Famer. Rest In Peace Walter Payton 🙏
Super athlete indeed I haven't watched professional sports of any kind for years. I was 12 when the 1985 bears season was taking place. I was so into pro sports football, basketball, baseball all of it. But I complete lost all interest by the mid 90's. Rest in peace Walter Payton and best wishes to you Lamont for bringing us all these wonderful stories.
It’s very sad that his name is not on the stone with his parents. Maybe he stated that he didn’t want it there for some reason. Cancer takes such young people. Its astonishing and horrible. 🌹
I remember when I was a teen in the UK I watched my first ever American Football Superbowl on Channel 4 and loved watching and supporting the Chicago Bears. Rip Walter you and the team gave me so many happy memories
Thank you for doing this video. My husband and I were both born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I met Walter Payton once at a work picnic. He came to sign autographs in 1997. Two years before passing away. My husband worked at a burger king when he was a teenager in 1986. Many times Walter Payton & a few other Chicago Bears players would go through the drive thru and order food (Walter and his family lived just a few min away from the restaurant in Barrington, IL). Walter Payton was a very nice guy. Liked to joke around.
Thanks for the laughs Lamont...Al Bundy, OJ....you're awesome! Yep, the original how to get away with murder, & the sequel was Casey Anthony! Anywho, loved Sweetness!! I was young at the end of his career but I remember my Dad talking about him & in awe of his ability/athleticism. Payton was also a jokester--I remember watching a clip of Mike Singletary tell the story of a practice day in which Payton put icy hot in Mike's jock---but uh, never confessed. 🤣😂 Payton was a Christian so I look forward to meeting him one day...gone too soon. Reggie White too, the list goes on. Thanks Lamont! Love, hugs & God Bless you 💞💞
I believe OJs son killed his mother and her boy toy and OJ returned to the scene after his drug fueled, violent son called him, so for the extra foot prints, and took the rap for his son who was angry his mother cancelled a dinner party at a place he worked embarrassing him after he bragged she was coming. The Police interviewed noone but OJ. OJ then had an affair with his Attorneys wife, she was split open, hospitalized and divorced soon after.
I remember as Walter was walking off the field into the tunnel for the last time a fan yelled "One more year Walter". I actually shed a tear. Walter was truly an inspiration to me. During the off season he was interviewed while doing a hill workout. I was a distance track and X-country runner at the time. I hated hill workouts. When I seen Walter doing them during an interview they somehow became my favorite workout. The guy was amazing. Watching him give an emotional interview when he knew he wasn't going to make it will stick with me forever. Outstanding man!
He was one of the greatest football players that I can remember from my childhood (except for the Steelers). He was also a great guy. So sad to see an all around great guy/athlete pass. Thanks for doing this video.
You really had to see this man play to truly understand just how special of a player he was, an absolutely incredible player that lived by the motto “never die easy” …Thanks for a lifetime of memories Walter, you will never be forgotten!
NFL Walter Payton man of the year award now named after him prestigious honor to receive this now he was a great man thanks Lamont great video of a great man and athlete!!!!!! They’ll never be another Walter stay safe my friend god bless
The sweetness! I'm not from Chicago but old enough to have had the honor of watching him. I love football. I'm extremely loyal to my home team but I respect great talent from the other teams. He was an incredible human being off the field as well. I agree that the running back position isn't what it used to be unfortunately but seeing Walter run was poetry in motion. Sad that his name is not on the stone.
Lamont: An addendum to your wonderful telling of his life would how his original Super Bowl ring was lost and the fascinating story on how it was found and returned years later. Awesome job as per the usual.
Boy it feels like yesterday when I saw that football game! One of the greatest team on that decade! And to me the best football player that ever lived! Period! The man was a class act! That’s why they used to call him sweetness. Gone way too soon! The 85 Chicago Bears the best team of the 80s. Rip🙏sweetness. Gone too soon but never forgotten!
Once, when I was little, I was at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL with my parents. My Mom pointed a man to my father that she said was Walter Payton. My Dad said no way and why would he be at Woodfield Mall just walking around. So they made bet that it was. My Dad went up to the man and asked him if he was Walter Payton. The man said no. My Dad told him I'm not looking for an autograph or anything, it's just that I bet my wife that you are not Walter Payton. Walter said give the lady the money. LOL
Wow, I didn’t know he passed. Just a little info… in the 11/18/1985 JET magazine with him on the cover , there’s an article about me in Detroit. I gave birth to my second daughter and she was born with teeth. They never got the story from me so they printed the wrong amount of teeth. When it was all said and done, she was born with ten teeth and her three sons were born with them too. Thanks Lamont
I always said I'd be lucky if I made it to 45 as well... Now that I'm past that mark I'm striving for 50...If I can just make 50 i'll consider it a great accomplishment and not set anymore age related goals for myself... Good stuff as always...Thanks for sharing!!!
I remember when he appeared on the Johnny Carson Show, WALTER broke down in tears explaining his illness, it really broke my heart Walter knew the doctors could not do anything for him, he knew his time was short, R.I.P WALTER PAYTON,.LOVED watching you play.
He was and always will be the greatest player of all time. I remember as a kid meeting him and not knowing who he was till my neighbor told me I damn near draped in me nickers . He was the most kindest man ever.
Always went to Chicago Bears games to primarily see him perform.Unheard of a back to play 13 years in pros. His off season regimen was grueling.Miss him Soo much.
My dad and I enjoyed watching Walter Payton play. Dad always looked for the stutter step when he would shift in high gear. Wish he had gotten a TD during their winning Super Bowl. Sweetness has been missed since his death as a person. Not just a football player. We used to say the Bears had two plays. Hand to Payton or pass to Payton.
It should be noted his father was a murder victim during a robbery while driving. Payton set records playing on a poor team where he was the only star who carried the team, like Rodgers does the Packers, until the 80s when Coach Ditka came and led the Bears to their only Super Bowl win.
RIP "Sweetness". No matter what all of USA's personal favorite teams were (I'm a Floridian who loved the Steelers at the time!!), in the 1985/Mike Ditka era, you were everyone's favorite!! 💗💗
Greatest football player of all time IMO. Watching him play was like watching a ballet. Beautiful runner and he would run right into the defense. No waiting for openings or running out of bounds.
They call me sweetness cause I like to dance, running the ball is like making romance etc... ('The SuperBowel Shuffle') RIP: Walter Payton...🪦🕊💐
Not only one of the greatest football players, but also one of the greatest MEN to ever play The Game. Rest in Peace, Walter. God bless you, Lamont 🙏❤️

I know people that worked for him and they say he was a great guy. Honest, generous and genuinely caring person. RIP

I remember where I was when I heard the news. I thought it was old too, but it’s just a new chapter. RIP
He was such a gentle nice man off the field. His nickname was Sweetness.
"sweetness" walter Payton was one of the best to ever suit up...RIP Walter....
We sports fans here in Green Bay knew Walter Payton very well! He was a special player! Great player, great personality, great man!
He was the greatest running back to ever play in the NFL. I remember the interview when he publicly discussed his illnesses and his fear of dying. It literally broke my heart because he was my hero as a kid.
There is a magnet school outside Chicago called Walter Payton College Preparatory High School. RIP, Walter Payton.
A legend Walter Payton, rest in peace sweetness
