  • Tom Chambers is one of the greatest scorers in NBA History, having scored over 20 thousand points in his career. But among players who are eligible for hall of fame consideration, Chambers is the highest scoring player that has not been inducted.

I grew up in Seattle in the 80s and 90s and was a huge fan of both the Sonics and the Suns. I had a Tom Chambers poster on my bedroom wall, next to Kevin Johnson, Charles Barkley and Dan Majerle. I think he definitely deverves a spot in the Hall of Fame. His biggest detraction, is also his greatest strength. He played in arguably the greatest era of the NBA. He was overshadowed by the Pistons, Celtics, Lakers and the emerging Chicago Bulls, led by a young Michael Jordan. There are tons of guys from that era in the Hall of Fame, who played on those championship teams.... So, a lot of people ask how he measured up against those giants. Well, his numbers were still phenomenal, even in a very tough era of basketball. He just doesn't have the name caché of Thomas and Dumars, Bird, McHale and Parrish, Magic, Kareem and James Worthy, or Barkley, Olajuwon, Drexler, Ewing, Wilkins, Robinson or Pippen... basically the early Dream Team era. That's his only flaw.

20k points, 6k rebounds, an All-Star MVP and some of the best in-game dunks of his era.
unfortunately his lack of playoff success will probably keep him out of the Hall.

I disagree. He was a great player no matter what overall success his team had in the playoffs. I remember watching him as a kid, he was definitely a great player and he deserves to be in the HoF!

Lack of playoff success? He was in the conference finals multiple times. And in the west that was huge. The road to the finals was always thru Lakers magic and Kareem. Chambers was the team’s go to guy and leading scorer. Lakers had a monopoly in the west. And then Chambers broke thru and went to the NBA Finals with Barkley once.

He was fun to watch. Not an all-round player like Larry Bird or a great defender like Bobby Jones. He wasn't winning titles like LeBron James. He wasn't charismatic like Charles Barkley.
But he could score. From inside and out. He was a ferocious dunker, but could also shoot threes (rare for tall players then). He was real athletic and could run and jump. What hops he had, and he was sensational at his best.
I've long wondered, what if Larry Bird had Chambers' ability in addition to his actual skills, smarts, and competitiveness? He might have become the greatest forward of all time, with absolutely no question. But what we had was two great players.
Yes, Tom Chambers should be in the Hall of Fame.

I personally think the NBA needs it's own HOF, and not just have a basketball HOF. I also feel it is far too easy to get it. Like Barkley said, "it's the HOF, not the hall of the really good". I don't think Chambers makes the cut personally, but if you are going to have guys like Chris Bosh, Mitch Richmond, and Toni Kukoc in, then Tom definitely deserves to be in. He was much better in the NBA than Toni was

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame has a reasonably low bar for who/what gets in and an unfair bias toward offence over defence.
Based on their own examples, Chambers should make it in eventually.
As far as him being one of, if not the best scorers to [currently] not be in the Hall, I think there is a lot more than career points per game to be considered.

He was the only 20,000 point scorer, for many years, that wasn't in the Hall. Now there are a few others (Antwan Jamison, Joe Johnson, Lamarcus Aldridge, Vince Carter) that may test the validity of that milestone and give Chambers another look at the Hall.

HOF? YES! I lived in Phoenix in the 80s ans went to several Suns games each year. Id say 80% of the time, he was the mostvexciting player on the floor. I was lucky enough to cee Bird and Jordan play That was most of the 20%.
