    I bought a 2003 Cervelo P3 Alum. last year for $800. Upgraded/"modernized" the drivetrain, bars and optimized cabling for another $1000'ish. Steve Larsen did the Lake Placid bike course in 4:33 back in 2001 on a P3 on his way to a win. I may consider blowing $10K on a bike when I get down to that time.

    I was lucky enough to get the new CF7 and it’s a really great bike! I’m not PRO and nowhere near breaking any sort of course records, so the bike is perfect! It’s got premium features which I think are more than enough for someone like me. I can always upgrade to di2 if needed, but at this point it’s still more than enough (and it looks even better in reality) 🙌

    • @TriathlonDan

      Nice one, it will be years and years before the frame is "out of date", it's very capable isn't it

  • @kymmoorhouse1538

    I had the cf ultegra di2 before this upgrade. Loved the bike but always hated the front end! Everyone with the same bike changed the stem face plate and added profile design aria hydration, or Radsport hydration (both identical to the new canyon one). Also cables coming out of the extension bars, and partially out of the base bar into the stem. It was minimal but enough to make it feel disappointing at the price.
    After 3years of trying to avoid it I just upgraded to the CFR in sparkle stealth….then this upgrade came out! Answering all my issues with the original CF!
    Absolutely love the cfr and rides amazing, but as you say I think if this upgrade would have come out before I changed I would have stuck with the CF

    • @TriathlonDan
      @TriathlonDan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice one, yes all I see is people changing the cockpit which seems such a shame! I'm sure you're still having a great time on the CFR, can't kick yourself with what came out after you made the decision :)

    There’s a couple of thoughts I have from this. That entry level bike is not an entry level price. I looked at buying the entry level version (previous version) and you can buy a third party hydration system which looks very similar to this new build. Once the cost was added with the hydration unit, it didn’t seem worth it. With this ‘new’ frame, They sell that extra accessory for 229. Why not just include it? These bikes are specific and meant for racing.
    a couple thousand more, you get a slightly better wheelset, an updated frame that does make a difference, better storage unit, and slick design. The internal storage In the frame was a selling point to me at the time since I was watching videos of people saying the entry level frame’e storage compartment made rattling noise.
    I’m also wondering if this update is being shown since there might be a brand new speed max in the higher end version. It’s been three years. Cool video man. I ride a 13 year old tri bike and I’m back on canyon’s site seeing if I should still get one.

    I'm amazed you can describe a £4000 bike as budget. For me that was a major spend and meant I had to economise in other areas of my life to afford it. The purchase was only possible because the price point is just under the UK limit of £4000 for cycle to work. The dearer versions will never be within my price range. The budget model as been ridden to great effect and is heading to Kona in October.

      Yes it's difficult to say isn't it. Me too, I built my TT bike up with second hand parts and it still owes me around that. The gains from the ones double the price will be small. Have a great trip!

    I think in lots of cases, it comes down to availability, with size and colors playing a large part. Not wanting a purple bike, I waited a year for a CFR. Preferred a CF SLX for much better price point, just was never available.

    I think the updated CF is a great bike for the money. The old front end is what put me off buying one, and I ended up buying a Handsling instead, the new cockpit transforms it. Sure, I could've bought the old version and upgraded the cockpit but I couldn't be bothered and went elsewhere. If I was buying again, I think I'd be really considering the 105 specced CF because there's nothing else out there with that spec, with a decent set of wheels, ready to ride straight out of the box for

      If it sells like other +$10k bikes, they'll probably make a version with a cheaper carbon layup. Trek has done this for years. Triathlon is dying a bit and that's why they haven't done it with the speed concept yet. But they've done it with the previous gens...on top of the Madone.

    The base model is a brilliant buy when you compare it to say the Cervelo P series 105 mechanical which is £3.6k. I think they’ve released this model as the old model hasn’t been available for 15 months + like you say is the etap slx version worth it at £8.4K ???Am sure for your average competitor over 180k the performance gains would be small!

    Do you think a new Speedmax CFR is coming ?

  • @samwordleyracing
    @samwordleyracing 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yes Dan great video of comparison between these Canyon Triathlon bikes. I think making the 'budget' version better with adding the hydration system is a no brainer as its arguably very little extra work to add this bit of plastic into the front end - but will be markedly more aerodynamic than an aftermarket solution - one would assume. Not to mention the ridiculousness of a Triathlon bike these days that doesn't come with a hydration system.
    Bringing that price up ever so slightly to 5.25k and offering a much more race ready and complete Triathlon bike set up is a decent cry to solving the bike sale struggles these brands are apparently experiencing. I think this will meet a lot more people's budget and needs, thus increase sales for Canyon.
    But i must admit - this is just my opinion from the evidence available and i am no means an insider or have much knowledge in marketing at all 😂👍

    i am surprised you didn’t mention the aerobars/extensions on the new bike. that’s actually the part i find most frustrating about my CF SLX. they’re not great and you see almost everyone with these bikes in competition changing the front end. this has me wondering whether they’ll be changing that on the other two models this year maybe?

      @@TriathlonDan it does seem crazy, right? i bought that bike thinking "this is the absolute best bike i can get for racing," but in fact it's a good starting point, and in order to be really competitive on that bike (or a bike like it), i think there's a lot of stuff you have to do to customize it to fit the rider. this wouldn't have made sense to me at the time, but it makes a lot of sense to me today. it's just frustrating because the bikes are indeed so very expensive.

  • @irondistance4313
    @irondistance4313 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think it is trying to grab market share. Really it makes them the only Tri bike with integrated hydration and tool storage for under 4k in your pounds. Obviously it’s not that different from the profile design aria hydration but still damn good. I really want him the mid range is so close to the top of the range it’s crazy.

    • @TriathlonDan
      @TriathlonDan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I guess that could be true, just getting more of the brand out there at every price point. I think there's a big market of people who don't want to actually fiddle with the bikes, so it coming with the hydration already fitted is an easier sell

    • @irondistance4313
      @irondistance4313 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TriathlonDan I agree but where’s the fun in not fiddling. I would love to have in frame tool storage and hydration on my Tri bike. But I’m committed to her now. I rebuilt it twice now on Sram AXS 1X and re did the cockpit twice, fans after a bike fit with that Dan guy finnaly have it feeling good. Only in it about what the base speedmax would cost thanks to the wonders of Facebook marketplace place. I do think is smart to have done this rework. I would love the tier 2 speed max if I just had 8k burning a hole in my pocket though but then I’d be back fiddling with the fit and changes I wanted to make to it. You know it never ends. I’m thinking of getting the 105 one as the electronic group set out of budget. What are your thoughts on the 105 cf at that price? Still seems a little much for a bike with 105 mechanical. Cheers

Groupsets are getting cheaper and cheaper, I think you could buy the mechanical version and fit di2 for not much more after you've sold the mechanical groupset, but a bit of a faff!
