Making lavender Hydrosol using an Alembic column Still and steam distillation

- Quite a few have asked to see how I use my Copper Alembic still to make the hydrosol that goes into a number of my products. Today I am going to take you along for the journey as I harvest the first of this years lavender that grows in our garden.

That’s so awesome. I just got a still like yours. I’m hoping to get it up and running this week. I live in Alberta Canada so we don’t have plants as large as yours are. It does smell amazing and wafts out the shop drawing people in 😆 its such a relaxing process no matter what I'm distilling
it's the wrong alembic it needs a basket on top that's for brandy! I'd get a felony for owning that one probably. It would be tough to argue it's not for alcohol in the states.

No matter how often I see this being done, I love the end result and that you grow your own lavender (not a fan of lavender personally, but that may be just me being a Gemini...lol). I'm so excited, I've been admiring these copper alembic stills for a few years now, since seeing you and Arienne use them in their soap/bath and body making businesses. Well my husband just gifted me one for our 13th anniversary. I'm trying to figure out the difference between creating a hydrosol and an essential oil as they obviously will have different roles within soap. I love hydrosols but know that the fragrance can get lost during saponification and it takes more of the water role vs the fragrance/essential oil. So, where do I go to learn about distilling an essential oil vs the hydrosol (I plan to do both), I'm not so sure that some of these people posting videos know the difference as they're doing the same process and producing what people that do know the difference are calling hydrosols... So clearly I've got some studying to do but was wondering if you could assist in pointing me in the right direction. My husband did get me a book as well, though the primary focus seems to be alcohol and spirits 😂 I'm pregnant so that's not on my to do list for quite some time, but for business purposes as it pertains to soap and other products, I'm begging that info...and apparently the column piece.
Congratulations on your anniversary!!! You will need to decide if you want to distill alcohol or hydrosol/essential oil in your still. Once you have used it for hydrosl/essential oil, you'll find that any alcohol will be tainted by the botanicals you have used. They generally recommend have a still for each.
In terms of the difference between making hydrosol and essential oil, there honestly is no difference in the process. Making essential oil will result in hydrosol. It is more about what you intend to make and how you process the material such as whether hydro-distill or steam distill.
When it comes to making essential oil, some plants will produce more essential oil than others. For example, when I did lemon myrtle leaves, I got about 5ml of essential oil from my 5L pot but when I process my Lavender, I am lucky to get 1ml. That is the other thing to consider - the size of your still. You need quite a large still to get any decent amount of essential oil. This is why I tend to make hydrosol and leave any oil in that water.
If you are going to make essential oil, I highly recommend investing in a separator to catch the water. They allow you to drain off the water, leaving any essential oil behind.
Such a fantastic way to get hydrosol! Do you ever use distilled water or is it best to just use spring water?
This process is how distilled water is made so there is no reason to use distilled water for hydrosol. You could use tap water but to get the best hydrosol it's recommended to use pure water which is why I use spring water.
I really wish lavender dried as pretty purple as it is when fresh
It is a shame it loses colour. Some suppliers have prettier lavender than others 💜
I watched when you did an earlier video but didn’t really comprehend how easy to use it would be. Oh Keeley Now I want one I’d love to use my lavender plants for more than bags. Must check it out. Did the pump etc all come with it. Do you use it for other products.
The first use is daunting but now it's such an easy process. I added the pump when I purchased it but they can be bought at most hardware stores. I make lots of products with different hydrosol. I have a face wash and cream made with Kaffir lime/ makrut leaves. 💜

Hydrosol is definitely expensive to buy but knowing how much waste there is, I can understand it 💜
I wanted to ask what type of burner stove you use? I ordered my 5L alembic like yours yesterday!!
I use an electric stove stop, but they work better with a gas burner. An induction top won't work.

@@user-cl8kl2ss9i Yes I am in Australia and we are not prohibited but there are restrictions. If we have a still any larger than 5L we must register it and show what it is used for. If they suspect you are making alcohol, we have to pay taxes. It is just not worth the hassle.

Is the tape necessary ? And should young lavender ( plant) be cut ?
As I explain in the video, the tape is used to stop steam escaping through any small hammer dents that may be around join. If you don't use them, you'll lose some of the steam.
My plants also aren't young. They're 6 years old
So the plant material doesn't scorch on the bottom? Do you have a screen on the bottom or is it ok. thanks, tom.
I find that as I'm using an electric plate, my botanicals don't get scorched. If I used gas as my heat source. I'd have a screen in the bottom. I also make sure the botanicals still have room to move around to stop scorching

just a query as to why you put a filter, wouldn't the end product just be clear from bits?
It should be clear but on occasion I've found little bits.
Hello, if the water was boiling at 100 degrees, and there was 5 litres of water in it, how did only 200ml or so come out after 2 hours? Maybe you didnt have 5l, but how is it so slow if the water is constantly boiling?
There are some really good books that explain the whole process. If I had only water in the pot, I'd get a lot more but as there is a plant material that absorbs water, you'll never get the same amount of water out. Plus, when making hydrosol there are several stages of extracting the botanicals and when we get to what is called the tail, it becomes bitter and is not what we want. For thus reason, you will never use the full amount of water. My still does hold 5l but the most you will get is 200 - 750ml depending on what you are distilling and the process

This process makes essential oil but this size pot doesn't make enough to warrant harvesting it. You can get special equipment to separate the oil and water

You bought the wrong still you are doing a water extraction and it's rudimentary what you want to try is steam distillation which is why labs use distillation flasks over the beakers so they can steam and which is why your advertised New Zealand pot has a basket on top of the Alembics for essential oil production!
I would have to disagree. I didn't buy the wrong one. This still does both hydro and steam distillation, allowing me to work with a variety of plant material. This still is only small due to legal requirements in Australia so I don't make essential oils, only hydrosol.

Not really. I have caught bits in the filter that I don't want in the hydrosol
