I've listened to this album from beginning to end literally hundreds upon hundreds of times. I feel so lucky to have been a teenager in the 1970s -- the greatest decade for music.
Even back in '73 the sax and jazz piano sounded weird coming from the band responsible for _Piper_ and _Ummagumma._ But this was also the band that gave the mic to an unknown backup singer and had her riff for 5 minutes without a clear idea of what she would do....
Brings to mind a little bit of Black Sabbath... "Generals gathered in their masses, just like witches at black masses." ... "Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerers of death's construction." (Hope I remembered those right)
I'll never forget listening to this song, age 16, driving downtown Tulsa Oklahoma about 4 in the morning. Not a soul on the road, the sun was just coming up and I was just coming off an incredible trip. Climbed the Mayo building and watched the rest of the sunrise. I wasn't alone and I was not driving lol.
I've seen you react to several songs from 'Dark side of the moon' and see how they tickle your soul in a good way. I'd really recommend you listen to the whole thing. Just take 45 minutes out of your day, kick back, maybe light a spliff (or don't, it'll be a trip either way) and experience this epic take on life in its entirety. This album to me is like a soul massage. Always relaxing and soothing, but a different part of the album might hit me right in the feels at any particular time I listen to it. Like a physical massage, it'll make clear where you're hurting, while healing that pain. I would love it if you'd listen to 'Dark side of the moon' in a reaction vid, but if that is problematic for some reason, please just do it for you off-screen. In the "good ole time" of Walkmans... I had one with auto-reverse, and a good headset. One of my "custom tape" (I had the vinyl but not easy to listen in high school) with DSTOM on one side, and WYWH on the other... Every evening I went to bed with the "magic tape" on, auto-reverse and had a DSTOM/WYWH loop every 45 minutes... Felt asleep with that, and just emerge to turn the Walkman off in the middle of the night. No need for incense, not need for artifices, at that time I didn't even smokes a simple cigarette. But I was high every time the "band started a different tune"... See ya! ...on the dark side of the moon.
Well said. Absolute Truth. This album needs to be heard in it's entirety in one sitting for you really to grasp it's full meaning and brilliance. Same can be said about "Wish you were here" and "Animals"
It really is a concept album about all the different stages of life. You’re absolutely right, you never know which part of the album is going to hit you at a given time. It really allows you to lost in your own thoughts. It’s like self therapy.
Their deep and thought provoking lyrics, are sometimes overshadowed by their amazing ability to surround them with the type of musical composition that ranks right up there with the great composers! People will be listening to their music 100 years from now! FYI - This was my favorite make out song when I was young!
As you go through Dark Side of the Moon, you might notice, there is not a single repeated chorus in any song. They did the entire album without a standard lyric, chorus, lyric, chorus song. They broke the mold.
Ya gotta listen to "The Dark Side of the Moon"....non-stop...beginning to end. There is a meaning to each of the songs that will all come together as an entirety.
I love watching you get off on the music and shake your head and with your eyes closed you are going to another place within your soul, it's fun to watch and very inspiring.

I did not realize when I was young and listening and loved Pink Floyd music that they actually was heavily impacted by the horrors of WW2 and the impacted it had on their parents and also them as kids. Its gives a much bigger impact to their early music. At least in my view, specially for the genius contribution from Roger Waters albeit David Gilmore is my favorite due to his soulful guitar skills.
The true GENIUS of "Us and Them" is that, while it's all about the brutality, the horrors, the futility and senselessness of war, it's all set to one of the most beautifully lyrical instrumentations imaginable. The song flows, soft and gentle at first, almost like a dream, only to suddenly thunder with shock and awe, then to go right back to soft and lyrical. Add in Dick Perry's explosive sax, and you have musical nirvana. PF at their best!
These guys took musical talent to a whole 'nother level. Appreciate what great musicians they are. Cherish them while they're still here. One day...All we'll have are the memories...

In the 70s when I was around 17 or 18 I used to listen to this album, start to finish, so often, lying on the floor in the dark living room, or with my girlfriend at the time. It's my all time favorite album. I'm so glad that it has the same effect on young people today. Good for you! Now I'm *hooked* on listening to Billie Eilish just as much! She's amazing! How did she ever come along? So glad she did!

As they were attached to U.S. Fifth Army I blindly included them under that umbrella without acknowledgement which was wrong; a sin of omission. I remember hearing this album for the first time as a childunit, every time I listen to any song from it... What you feel listening to Pink Floyd will never leave you... Once you feel it, you will always feel it.
The intro with the sax is pure musical velvet the lyrics are absolutely spot on with the experiences to whats going on day after day there is a lot of good in this world but unfortunately there is far to much greed and bad things going on aswell we all have so much to learn pink floyd are telling us whats happening its for us to put it right today great reaction keep on rockin girl
Music is about feelings and truth telling. One of the hardest hitting performance was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” sung by a dying legend Johnny Cash. Another heart string puller is “Lazarus” by David Bowie.in the video you see his sunken face ravaged by cancer, the weak body fighting against the final nod. Heart breaking and beautiful.
The discovery satisfies the journey, and Pink Floyd is not just music but a journey. First listened to this 47 years ago, my second Pink Floyd album the first being "Metal" given to by friend who said ," you gotta hear this", so my journey begin. Nice to watch you beginning yours!
Rock 'n roll is a very broad genre, and that's one of the things I love about it. In it you'll find hard rock, acid rock, punk, funk, soul, blues, country ... You can even find elements of classical and jazz in rock. Pink Floyd took its name from two great blues artists Pinkney " Pink " Anderson and Floyd Council, and even though many see Floyd more as progressive rock, they always kept blues and soul elements alive in all their music--note the sax, guitar, backing vocals, etc. If you want your mind blown with some of the most soulful, ass kicking singing you've ever heard, listen to The Great Gig in the Sky.
Yup.. there she goes again... that was a saxgasum... I know she loves drums, but I've seen her reactions long nough... that is one bad arse sax player. Have seen them live, and I see myself in the crowd looking over and around, and there you are... jamin like a thousand others in the crowd that night... same effect a generation later... love u girl lol... an you looked under the weather, but snapped out of it when the sax began ...bless you!

This is about how we continually divide the World into 'Us' and 'Them'. Both at the small scale individual level and at the large scale level , with religion, nations etc. It particularly shows how the prevalence of such an attitude can lead to the ultimate expression of 'us and them' - war.

This was the first album that I bought with my own money. 1973. I feel blessed to have lived through some of the best music ever made.

I was attempting to give some superficial insight about the song(s) but should have paid more attention to detail and made sure to add "Canadian forces" as well. As they were attached to U.S. Fifth Army I blindly included them under that umbrella without acknowledgement which was wrong; a sin of omission. Thanks to your Uncle for his service and we Americans are always proud of our Canadian "brothers in arms" who are always at the ready to defend freedom and liberty. "Lets Go...Canada!"

Mike K I assumed you were a Brit but he was an amazing man but he was also an alcoholic. And he went from Toronto to Vancouver all of his adult life. I have a great respect for anyone who serves their country and I'm going to say this including non allied countries. And thanks to the Americans for their participation

Dark side of the Moon sold over 45 million copies & was on billboards records charts from 1973 to 1988 top 50. Most everyone that I knew had a copy of the album , tape or CD.
I remember hearing this album for the first time as a childunit, every time I listen to any song from it... What you feel listening to Pink Floyd will never leave you... Once you feel it, you will always feel it.

The intro with the sax is pure musical velvet the lyrics are absolutely spot on with the experiences to whats going on day after day there is a lot of good in this world but unfortunately there is far to much greed and bad things going on aswell we all have so much to learn pink floyd are telling us whats happening its for us to put it right today great reaction keep on rockin girl
The album is meant to be listened to as a whole...but particularly side 2... only then will you truly appreciate the genius.

Music is about feelings and truth telling. One of the hardest hitting performance was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” sung by a dying legend Johnny Cash. Another heart string puller is “Lazarus” by David Bowie.in the video you see his sunken face ravaged by cancer, the weak body fighting against the final nod. Heart breaking and beautiful.
One of the most underrated Pink Floyd songs and imo actually one of the most underrated songs of all time.

The discovery satisfies the journey, and Pink Floyd is not just music but a journey. First listened to this 47 years ago, my second Pink Floyd album the first being "Metal" given to by friend who said ," you gotta hear this", so my journey begin. Nice to watch you beginning yours!

Rock 'n roll is a very broad genre, and that's one of the things I love about it. In it you'll find hard rock, acid rock, punk, funk, soul, blues, country ... You can even find elements of classical and jazz in rock. Pink Floyd took its name from two great blues artists Pinkney " Pink " Anderson and Floyd Council, and even though many see Floyd more as progressive rock, they always kept blues and soul elements alive in all their music--note the sax, guitar, backing vocals, etc. If you want your mind blown with some of the most soulful, ass kicking singing you've ever heard, listen to The Great Gig in the Sky.

Yup.. there she goes again... that was a saxgasum... I know she loves drums, but I've seen her reactions long nough... that is one bad arse sax player. Have seen them live, and I see myself in the crowd looking over and around, and there you are... jamin like a thousand others in the crowd that night... same effect a generation later... love u girl lol... an you looked under the weather, but snapped out of it when the sax began ...bless you!

I always think of Manhattan at 3am with wet empty streets and blinking signs when I hear the sax.
This is about how we continually divide the World into 'Us' and 'Them'. Both at the small scale individual level and at the large scale level , with religion, nations etc. It particularly shows how the prevalence of such an attitude can lead to the ultimate expression of 'us and them' - war.
I can tell Pink Floyd puts you into a super chill state, it's dope.
