(Hard to come by now, I had the DVD many years ago) If you synchronize the Wizard of OZ movie (original) and cue the DSOTM on the second roar of the MGM lion, they will sync up. It is called synchronicity. There are all kinds of hidden gems of Pink Floyd, behinds the scenes and trivia, well except Floyd fans know most of them.

I explained the meaning to side one of "Darkside of the Moon" on her reaction to side one if you want to read that first. As I said on the first side, this album takes a person's life from birth until death. After listening to the feeling that you never have enough "Time" in the day or in life in general and exploring the fear of death in "Great Gig in the Sky", Roger Waters then wrote about "Money" and the fear of never having enough money, but working hard to have it even though it is considered to be bad to be too greedy, but rarely willing to give any of it away. Then we move into "Us and Them", which explores war and how there are generals ordering people under their command on both sides to fight and kill each other when the people fighting each other on opposite sides have more in common with each other than the generals ordering them to fight. But out of a feeling of patriotism they hate each other because they are not on their side. Now our character is experiencing more of life in "Any Colour You Like" and eventually comes to "Brain Damage" where he is coming across people who think completely different than him like the lunatic who is on the grass even though the sign says to stay off the grass, which doesn't make sense since grass is made to be walked on and the lunatic is showing him that he should not stay on the path because grass is made to be walked on and he has always followed the rules, causing confusion as to what to do. Then he talks about the lunatics in his hall in the newspaper that holds their folded faces to the floor and everyday the paperboy brings more. These lunatics are now in his head, they raise the blade and make the change in how he is thinking and rearranging his thinking until he realises these lunatics are right and now he is finally sane. Waters also is talking of their previous band mate, Syd Barrett, who suffered from Schizophrenia and did too much LSD and lost his marbles and was a brilliant singer and songwriter before losing his mind and is also one of those lunatics who showed them different ways of seeing the world as well. But now our character finally understands what is truly important in life and expresses those epiphanies in life in "Eclipse". He finally gets it at the end of his life and then he dies as his heart beat slowly fades out.

The moon does not shine. Whichever half is pointed toward Earth is reflecting the sun's light back at us. The other half is in total darkness. There really is no Dark Side of the Moon as the voice says at the end... "as a matter of fact it's all dark" (but for the sun). One of the ways they made the money sounds was by throwing a load of nuts and bolts into a food mixer. The clocks going off was an tech demo the producer had made for his own amusement previously. There is a subtle pitch bend on the long last note of "The Great Gig In The Sky" where they pinched the recording tape with fingers to slow it down which made the playback bend up. They did all kinds of crazy things.

Pink Floyd interview , said Clare Torry heard the music to Great gig in the sky and ask her to come up with something on here own, she went in and sang what you just heard, “ FIRST TIME, ONE TAKE “. She asked to do it again, they said NO, it was perfect. Absolutely INCREDIBLE ! This is TRUE, and it makes what you hear even more AMAZING.

The moon only shines because of the sun, as we do. We are only living because of the sun energy, but when our times passes, all is left is our dead body, and the ''light'' that used to give us energy will be gone, lefting behind only dust. As a metaphore, we are the moon. We shine when alive, but we return to our dark state the time death reach us. The dark side of the moon is an illusion that makes the human being think humanity is something bigger than the nature around us, but in reality we are only part of it. We are only dust from the beggining. The thing that make us live and that give us energy is the nature, and the sun. When the album ends, you can hear a slow heartbeat untill it stops completely. That lunatic person from Brain Damage was expecting to see the dark side of the moon, but he concluded it was all dark, wich means he died.

I can't describe it, I don't even know myself. But since I first listen to this album when I was 13 or something ~1989, it almost instantly became my favorite album. It took me some time to dig into it (I'm French, I was a kid), but it has been "with me" for all those years. In high school I had a "Walkman" and a tape with this album on the one side and Wish you were here on the other one (both being just below 45mn it was fitting on a full face of a 90mn tape), and I was listening to this tape in loop (thanks "autoreverse") with my headphones, on the bus to school, in my bed to sleep (and woke up to turn of the Walkman in the middle of the night), later at job, I was heavily listening to music, this album was played at least 2 times a day, everyday, for YEARS. And I still listen to it regularly, maybe not many time a day (I watch TH-cam reactions ;) ). Anyway, it's a kind of magic (Freddie would have said), this album is special. They did something they themselves didn't realize at the time I believe, and it might still be over their head, for the one still living.
I think it's like "Life"... Sometimes in the Cosmos, in "Space Time", something magic happen, the actor of the magic don't even know. The molecules didn't know about life, yet Life appeared from molecules... Pink Floyd are great musicians and artist each one of them, but "together" (And their team), they did something which went far beyond what they thought they had made...
Not sure that my sentences are clear, as I'm French, my long explanation can be clumsy :).
Anyway great reaction, enjoy your future "revisiting" this album. And have a good musical "theatrical journey" on "Wish you were here", "Animals" and "The Wall".
    Bests.

Hi Jayy. I am SO glad to have found you and watched your first reaction to Dark Side of the Moon. I've been listening to Pink Floyd for over 40 years so that should give you an idea how old I am. Clare Torry was the original female vocalist you hear in Great Gig in the Sky, which is one of the absolute best pieces of the album. David Gilmour and Roger Waters on guitar, Nick Mason on drums and Richard Wright on keyboard. I think one of the themes of the album you may pick up is schizophrenia. One of the founding members of the band was Syd Barrett who left the band prior to this album after being ousted due to mental illness. Anyway, please don't stop exploring Pink Floyd, and pay special attention to the live performance of Pulse which is available on youtube. When I go to my great reward, the Great Gig in the Sky, my one regret will be never having seen Pink Floyd in concert. Oh, and one more thing, please search for Comfortably Numb and watch one of the live performances. David Gilmour has to be one of the top 5 guitarists in history. Keep the faith girl, your doing good.
