Cozy Powell on drums is probably one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, he lived his life at 200mph, and played on more albums than just about any other musician ever. Dio was in Elf then Rainbow, He came to the attention of Ritchie Blackmore supporting Deep Purple (not part of Deep Purple) This is probably the greatest of Rainbows songs out of a lot of great songs.
So much greatness on one stage. I'm always amazed how many people don't know Rainbow, doesn't seem possible but that's how it is. Great reaction, thanks so much, that was a blast. ✌❤
I went to a Rainbow concert in 1976 ! I had only known Blackmore before and I was blown away by Dio as you are today. Dio is the voice of metal and will ever be !!! 🤘🥰🎶
What will truly blow your mind is not Ronnie James Dio´s voice/skills while singing...but the fact he never had any official voice training. He is simply a natural singer/master of his craft.
This is easily one of the greatest metal songs of the 70's, and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Everybody was on FIRE for this one. And the lyrics are just fantastic. Both a literal tale told from the viewpoint of a wizard's enchanted slave helping build him a tower so he can fly to the stars, only to watch him fall and die on the sand, AND an allegory about the dangers of blindly following a demagogue. The clever composition foreshadowing the wizard's fall (Blackmore's descending chromatic finale to that AMAZING B Phrygian dominant solo) and the switch in the lyrics to PAST tense ("where WAS your star", etc) alluding to the finality of the wizard's failure. Another line that REALLY hits me is "Ohhhh I seeeee his faaaaace!". In the beginning verses, it's clear that the character is expressing his fear and awe at seeing his master's face, but when you hear the very same line sang after the wizard falls, sang EXACTLY the same way, it's clear that he is shocked at seeing the clearly mortal man dead on the sand. Just perfection.
Dio was the man, a true legend. I got to see him live many times and he was just as awesome as on the records, if not better. Rainbow with Dio and Blackmore was a phenomenon! The drummer here is Cozy Powell, another legend who left us too early.
Being that short probably helped ground his voice even more ? Met him once at the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure premier party. He was my height but he was on stage 😂
It was Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) that was also in Deep Purple. Dio also sang in Black Sabbath (Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know (released under the band name Heaven and Hell))
The bassplayer Jimmy Bain that was in the live video for the song Last in line that you reacted to also played on this album, he played on a number of the Dio albums, mainly the early ones.
Check out Rainbows live version of “Still I’m Sad” in which Cozy does his drum solo, you will love it, I saw the Rainbow Rising tour in 1976, it was so good I remember it like yesterday.

This is where Ronnie became a god, which, oddly enough, is what the wizard in the song thought he was. There's much fantastic playing in this song but Ronnie's vocals overwhelm it all.
The really good thing to come out of the reaction channel phenomenon is that proper musicians, truly talented musicians who became successful through hard work and dedication, not winning popularity on a TV show, are coming to the attention of people such as yourself. I’m 64, I grew up listening to Ronnie and Ritchie and so, during the Covid lockdown fiasco, it was out of sheer boredom that I began watching other people reacting to bands I was passionate about. I was actually really surprised that people I assumed would be well known to fans of rock were like manna from heaven, whereas for us, ahem, more mature listeners, this was music. We listened to talent like this in abundance. It’s why I’m still watching (select) reactions four years on. I also got my reward from the side bar when I’m reading reaction information…I was introduced to the band that has quite literally taken over my life, a band I truly believe to be, because of every aspect of their music, lives, personalities and humour, the best band I have ever heard. LOVEBITES.
If you want to hear some of Dio's absolute Best Vocals, check out Rainbow Mistreated live in Munich. Cozy Powell there on drums aswell and Ritchie on guitar obviously. Incredible live performance.
The drummer is Cozy Powell, who replaced Gary Driscoll with this album. Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple & recruited Dio & 2 other members of the band Elf to form Rainbow. After the first album, Ritchie Blackmore fired the other two members but kept Dio. This is off the 2nd album Rising. Dio would do one more album before leaving for Black Sabbath for a couple of albums before forming a solo band. He would return to Sabbath for a reunion album called The Dio Years & then Black Sabbath would change their band name to Heaven & Hell to avoid confusion with the Ozzy Osbourne & Tony Martin eras (though it's likely due to the rights of the name being split between the original members who weren't all there). I love this song, my interpretation is how a life dedicated to something you believe in but yet not being 100% known to be true can be wasteful. Like the slaves of Ancient Egypt who believed in a savior with many generations never actually seeing it come to fruition.
He was also in Black Sabbath and Elf. Cozy Powell is arguably one of the most influential drummers of the era, and if you think he's a monster, you are correct. Check literally ANYTHING with Ian Paice on drums if you want to see another monster.
Ritchie was notorious for using very few guitar effects, except ones he invented himself. He used to use a reel to reel tape in between the pre-amp & main amp, on a twin loop. Thus the Tape Echo was born. His solo on this was mainly played on slide guitar, with reverb & the tape echo. In the 1960s whilst working as a session player he worked a lot with Frank Marshall (creator of Marshall amps). Ritchie wanted a second volume fitted on his amp & Frank built it to Ritchie's specs. So Blackmore not only invented the Tape Echo, founded Deep Purple & Rainbow, but also invented the Master Volume on amplifiers. Oh, and he invented scalloped fretboards as well ! Now if only the silly bugger had patented that lot !
I'm embarrassed to admit that I only starting digging into this band about a year ago. "Rising" is a banger start to finish. I mean, "A Light In The Black"....that's not even fair!

Ritchie has never been "the loudest guitarist on earth". Deep Purple (with Ritchie) was once the loudest band in the world playing at 117 decibels. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

One of the top 5 Metal songs of all time, for sure. Chills every time I hear this song. It NEVER gets old. You can't live without having Dio in your life. He's an absolute phenomenon - so much character, control, power, and emotion. You have to listen to everything he's done, especially the earlier stuff with The Elves, then Rainbow, then Black Sabbath, then his solo stuff, and the Heaven and Hell album. Also, yes, Cozy Powell is an absolute monster on the drums. Add in Ritchie Blackmore and you have total gold. Listen to "Rainbow Eyes", or even the lesser-known "Wonderworld" by Elf, "Egypt (The Chains Are On)", "Shame on the NIght", or "All the Fools Sailed Away", for example.
So glad you got here - been listening to it for nearly 50 years and it's still epic. There's a multitude of awesome music that springs from the Deep Purple Family Tree - far too many to mention, but the next choice (especially as a drummer), has to be the next track which is a follow-on from the story to complete this epic mini-rock opera - "Light in the Black"! Make sure you don't miss out on the reactor's favourite of Deep Purple "Child in Time" live from 1970 too! Good Luck in the rabbit hole! And, in Cozy's words, heads-down and we'll see you at the end!
Ronnie started his music career in the 1950's, Ronnie and the Red Caps, then in the 60's Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, then Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath then solo (DIO)...then back with Sabbath a couple of times. Also he learned trumpet in his youth, so he is an adept musician, guitar, bass, keys, drums, he understood it all, but he said learning trumpet helped him understand and discover his vocal talents and approach.
Funny thing....this particular drum intro was rated In the top 10 of rock song drum openings of all time. Check out Cozy Powell and his body of work. sadly he died in a car wreck

Well now, aren´t you the lucky one? I just love your reaction and you´ve found a rabbit hole you never wanna leave! Ronnie James Dio is an absolute LEGEND and THE GOAT. I highly recommend the live version of "Heaven and Hell" with Black Sabbath with Dio on vocals from the 80s. Just as "Stargazer" blew me away, so did "Heaven and Hell". It´s just magic!! Dio was a fantastic songwriter, singer AND storyteller (and also a trumpet player in his youth!), but he was also a humble person who really cared of his fans. Sadly, he passed away in stomach cancer in 2010, may he rest in piece ❤ But for me, he lives on forever!
I never saw Rainbow live, but I did see DIO solo early in that bands career...just incredible (and the played some Rainbow songs) after that I saw DIO several times. He was a magician on those vocals.
Fun fact, the cover of their Rising album, was painted by Ken Kelly, who also painted the KISS album Destroyer in the same year, later on Love Gun from KISS and he did allot of Manowar album covers!

Cozy did a lot of solo stuff. Would be good to check out 'Na na na,' or 'Dance with the Devil.' Both classic bangers.
We actually covered Child In Time here on the channel! It was phenomenal!
@@setonhillstudios Sorry, I must of missed that one - off to find it now!
@@setonhillstudios Apologies again! I did catch it!
This first iteration of Rainbow changed music. Metal and hard rock. The two songs on the B side of this album created neoclassical metal !!
Definitely need to check out more from him! That intro was straight 🔥🔥
Wow. Your going to the GEMS...... CONGRATULATIONS...
Every singer that Ritchie Blackmore connected with became famous. Blackmore is the musical brains behind this.
Cozy Powell❤
'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977 is outstanding! Also 'Man on the Silver Mountain' from the same concert (the 14:45 min version). Actually, just watch that entire concert, it's on TH-cam, there is not a bad moment!!
Dio was in Black Sabbath and Rainbow. For Deep Purple you are thinking about the guitarist here - Ritchie Blackmore. He created Rainbow with Dio after leaving Purple.
Rainbow remains my favorite band. To really appreciate how good they were, check out the 1977 Munich concert. Songs like " Mistreated" and " Catch the Rainbow" are magical. So very good.
Thanks for the recommendations! Can’t wait to hear more from them! Phenomenal musicians! 🔥
Saw this song by this line-up in 1976. Never been better ever since.
Danggg! I’m jealous! I bet it was amazing!
@@setonhillstudios yep it was. Fortunately there are three live double albums recorder in Germany 1976, including Stargazer. However, the 1977 live dvd also recorded in Germany, doesn’t have Stargazer, but is with Blackmore on Guitar, Powell on drums and Dio on vocals. 🤘
I liked the first Rainbow album too,RBs Rainbow and the last 3 deep purple studio albums, burn, stormbringer and come taste the Even after Ritchie left Tommy Bolin was good although completely different,RIP all members who have passed.
Dude, Ritchie Blackmore is a machine.... one of the best in world for sure !!!
RITCHIE BLACKMORE on guitar, left Deep Purple in 75 to form this band
The second half of that solo is so heavy. I don't know how the stage didn't crumble under the weight of all that Metal!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely!!! Let’s goooooo! 🔥
Well...one of the best drummer ever.: Mr. Cozy Powell. A lot of amazing bands with his music. Cheers.
This is the guitarists band. Ritchie Blackmore from deep Purple. Dio was never in deep Purple but Ritchie heard in elf and asked if he wanted to join him in Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow.
Finally my favorite song off of the album Rainbow Rising
11:44 That's when the string and french horns injection from Munich Philharmonic Orchestra kicked-in, leading to a more dramatic climax to the song.
The great Cozy and Ronnie. RIP.
Most epic song ever
Another epic Rainbow song is The Gates O Babylon, well worth reacting to.
Appreciate the recommendation! Can’t wait to hear more!
You would definitely enjoy The Charismatic Voice (TH-cam channel) doing her analysis of both this and the song 'Mistreated' from the same concert. She does a really great analysis and she loves Dio too!
I have watched her a few times! She has an excellent channel and is doing some great work! Thanks for the insight!
@@setonhillstudios Yay!
Glad you enjoyed it! So sad that he passed but his music will live on forever! Have a great one!
I never saw Rainbow live, but I did see DIO solo early in that bands career...just incredible (and the played some Rainbow songs) after that I saw DIO several times. He was a magician on those vocals.
No doubt! Such an amazing voice! So cool that you got to see him perform live with DIO though! 🤘🏻
Fun fact, the cover of their Rising album, was painted by Ken Kelly, who also painted the KISS album Destroyer in the same year, later on Love Gun from KISS and he did allot of Manowar album covers!
