Deep Purple is one of the best in classical rock melody. So many great songs to request. All of the Fireball album from 1971 at least. No One Came is a great early heavy metal song. There’s three variations of the band that started in 1968. Thanks for spreading the love of this music 🎶
Paice plays all Deep Purple recordings. "Child in time" was him. It was Ian Gillan there on vocals and Roger Glover on bass. Coverdale had a short three years with the band and then went on to form WHITESNAKE where he made further use of his amazing voice ("still of the night" "Slave" "too many tear" "Sailing ships" "only my soul" "wings of the storm" "Stormbringer" - usually played played as a medley "Burn/strombringer", "restless hear" "Good to be bad" "give me all your love" "soldier of fortune" - are all must-hears). He also had a short co-op with Jimmy Page (of Led Zeppelin) and the eponymous Page-Coverdale album is a gem.
MK3 is my favourite lineup of Purple, most other Purple fans lean toward the classic MK2 lineup. Coverdale & Hughes had some pipes back then, mind given Glenn’s demons over the years his voice is still superb. Some seem to class Glenn as the backing vocalist, he was joint lead vocalist. The attendance was anywhere between 250,000 & 400,000 as many didn’t have tickets for the festival. From the stage you could see people all the way to the horizon. The epic Blackmore finale saw one guitar lost, one smashed, a tv camera smashed, an amp blown up allegedly creating a hole in the stage, a marshal stack thrown off the stage & a $10,000 bill for the band. Those were the days 🤘🏻
This rock festival took place in 1974 at the old Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario California, which is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. The concert was known as the 'California Jam.' Black Sabbath, the Eagles, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Earth Wind and Fire and other acts played this festival. I attended 'Cal Jam 2' four years later at the same location in 1978. Some of the acts at Cal Jam 2 included Aerosmith, Santana, Ted Nugent, Heart; to name a few. Enjoyed your reaction. Thanks.
Glenn Hughes is still phenomenal. I got to watch him with Joe Lynn Turner with their collaboration project named HTP. Those guys had awesome pipes and their set was really good. It was in the fall of 2002 so its a long time ago now. I have seen live clips from Glenn singing recently and he still has a powerful voice.
Just try and imagine what it must have been like. David hadn't been in the band long and you find yourself in front of a crowd of over 300,000. Simply, Mind blowing. First concert I ever watched on video and I'll never forget the energy that oozed out of the TV that Saturday morning, watched with the best friends I'll ever have.
It was yhe California Jam and arpund 400,000 people attended. Purple were massive, The Eagles and Black Sabbath were one of the support bands that day.
He is now. Back in the day, he had the pipes but the drugs sometimes interfered with his good taste. From all the singers Deep Purple has had (excluding Rod Evans because no one has heard him for decades), the one whose voice aged the best by far.
Huge library, different lineups, always interesting. First two line-ups have all there best stuff but every other had their quality. Extraordinary and wildly influential band. Bless John Lord and Ian Paice for making it happen, without them there wouldn't be Deep Purple.
"burn" is one of my all-time favorites, one of best rock songs ever. It was amazing with Deep Purple, and just as great when performed by Whitesnake. BUT: I'd like to draw your attention to two covers of it that are easily found on YT, one is a semi-amateur (by status, not by level of playing) job by a group called The Iron Cross; the other is an awsomest cover I heard by Mr Big (a group so often ignorantly associated only with hair metal ballads and sweet tones for teenage girls). Mr Big is a rock three-piece band (plus singer) and you'd think a Deep Purple cover would suffer on it. Nah-ah, remember than Billy Sheehan is on the bass ther. It's truly breathtaking how they realize that song.
This riff inspired Paul Stanley in writing I Stole Your Love. When you get to that song listen to the live version from Largo MD 1977 or Houston Texas 77.
Yes, it was Ian Paice on drums in Child in Time! He has been Purple's drummer since the very beginning and is still with them! He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. You were also right about Glenn Hughes, he has been in Black Country Communion. Surely you know David Coverdale? Ever hear Whitesnake? For more Deep Purple, check out Highway Star, Lazy, Woman from Tokyo, and of course: Smoke on the Water.
Yeah I covered a Whitesnake tune on here. Honestly, didn’t know that was him until people filled me in! So many amazing musicians back then it’s hard to keep them all straight!
@@Stefan- Not only great compositions and brilliant brave lyrics, but the sound production is just - well - perfect... Perfect ratio of volumes, fat drums and crispy guitar, thick bass and rich round organs, and - naturally - just right amount of reverb in the vocals. Another great rock album with this sort of sound production is "Unu" by Perfect (Poland, 1982, right in the heat of martial law).
Realize, this was set up at the infield of a 2 1/2 mile auto race track in Ontario, California! Normally used for NASCAR and Indycar races back through the 1970s (they tore it all down in the rally 1980s). 300,000 people there it was reported. Huge festival, Purple took the spot that would best show their lights, sunset. Before Emerson, Lake, and Palmer!!
Great reaction once again man! I remember getting this on VHS when it first came out and I played it right through the night - the tape only just lasted for when the DVD came out! The end of this set is absolutely legendary and well worth researching and tuning into - maybe not reacting to, but it's true "Rock 'n' Roll" as they say - and expensive! The reincarnation of Purple brought about an album called "The House of Blue Light" back in 1987 and this is my "go to" album for any drummer - although Paicey is pretty awesome with everything he does! Would be great to hear reactions of the almost untouched BCC's albums too! Keep 'em coming!
Coverdale later formed Whitesnake. Lord and Paice were in early Whitesnake as well. Hughes is still in Black Country Communion with guitarist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian on keys. They released their 5th album this year. They on again off again.
Deep Purple Mk3 lineup was very good, songs like "Stormbringer", "Sail Away", & "Mistreated" are great songs. More DP is a good thing. Ritchie & Lord are 2 of the very best.

Ned from Spain and thank you for reacting to this classic performance from 1974's California Jam that me, my brother and our friends saw waaaayyyyy back in the day. Yet another video that forgets there's a drummer back there beatin them drums like they owe him money. Ian Paice was one of the founding members of Deep Purple along with Blackmore and Jon Lord. The 1st line up had Rod Evans, later of Captain Beyond and Nic Semper on bass. Deep Purple in Rock is the intro of the classic mk 2 line up, Ian Gillan voc, Roger Glover bass, Burn is DP mk 3 and brings in Glenn and David. There is an amazing 1 hour + B&W Danish TV concert from 1972 with a blistering drum solo by Paice during "The Mule" that will take you to school, that means me too by the way. Hey one other thing, what are your guys names ??
I love that you are actually aware of Rod Evans. Their stuff was different with him but one of my favorite albums is Deep Purple. Captain Beyond are so freaking good also.
What’s up Ned! I’m Steven (the one with tattoos). My partner here at Seton Hill Studios is Corey but you won’t be seeing him much on the reaction side of things as he is handing more of the audio production stuff with the clients that come in to record. @@brewstergallery Absolutely man. Caldwell is insanely good. Yes a super group for sure. I will always just throw the debut album on and play from start to finish.
Great band, great reaction! You should definitely do the studio version of this song. Ian Paice's fills and rolls are pure gold in this one. This live recording does not represent his playing at all.

I was at this Concert, left a note on our Kitchen table, said went to California Jam be back in a week, and that day was the longest i have ever been without going to the bathroom from Dawn until dusk, it was so packed, we finely started to leave when Emerson Lake and Palmer started playing, and got back to Vegas to be put on restriction lol i think i was only 17 at the time.
You are a lucky man, indeed. Saw them at Madison Square Garden in 73 mk2 and 74mk3. Best shows ever. Shocked Coverdale and Hughes could pull off, replacing the great Ian Gillan. Awesome shows
130m lps sold. 1973, the biggest band in the world in gate receipts and lps sold. Repeated it again 1984. Rip Jon Douglas Lord. Ritchie blackmore is a Mount Rushmore guitarist.
I was there somewhere in the middle of those 300,000 people. I was 15 at the time. Deep Purple headlined with Emerson Lake & Palmer. Also on the bill.. Black Sabbath, The Eagles, Rare Earth, Earth Wind & Fire, Seals & Crofts & Black Oak Arkansas.
Yes, this is Glenn Hughes - bass/vocals from Black Country Communion which also contains Joe Bonamassa - vocals/guitar, Jason Bonham, legend John Bonham's son - drums & Derek Sherinian - keyboards. The singer here is David Coverdale who replaced Ian Gillan after he left. Coverdale went on to form Whitesnake.
Hi. The singer here is David Coverdale. This is DP's Mark III (the 3d "composition" of the band). In Child In Time you watched DP's Mark II - with Ian Gillan (vocal) and Roger Glover (bass). Of course Paice was on drums - he's been the only permanent member of the band till now. Gillan and Glover left DP in 1973. And there appeared DP's Mark III - with Coverdale (vocal) and Hughes (bass, vocal). This concert - California Jam - was the 1st perfomance of such scope for Coverdale. You can also react to another great song from the same performance - Mistreated. th-cam.com/video/5GsqL_xlkh0/w-d-xo.html
In my opinion the most epic song they've ever recorded ist "April"...! a 14 min. tune with an orchestra, incl. 2 min. of great lyrics: "Grey sky where it should be blue! Grey sky where I should see you!"
Glen has always been a beast - be it as bassist, a singer or party boy and what we call in Poland "jebaka" (say yeh-BAH-kah) (you might say "horndawg").
@@graziacagna7223 Wow. La famosa rinascita di mark2. La formazione classica per eccellenza. L'album è degli anni 80. Presumo che sarà stato in quel periodo. Io purtroppo ero ancora troppo piccola.
Rainbows were popular in the 70´s (for other reasons than today). The band Elf that was Dio´s band before Rainbow were created toured a lot with Deep purple and this is how Blackmore got to know Dio and started Rainbow together with him, the rest of the members of the band Elf besides the guitarplayer also joined Rainbow and play on the first album, so memberwise its Elf with Blackmore on guitar.
In the 70's we were spoiled for keyboard players Jon Lord, Keith Emmerson, John Paul Jones, Rod Argent and of course the late and much missed John Mayall who spanned all generations.
Glenn Hughes has a stellar solo catalogue. Check it out. He has also done stuff with Black Country Communion, the Dead Daisies as well as stuff with Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi. David Coverdale has done all the Whitesnake stuff, and Blackmore has done tons of stuff also.
Of course Deep Purple & ELP had that legendary scuffle back stage to see who would go on last, and Purple won! But then Ritchie always the diva wanted to go on RIGHT as the sun was going down, they said NO get your ass out there now! So, he locked himself in the bathroom for 45 minutes...it worked! They came out right at Sunset...ahh the 70's!
that's not what happend. First off, ELP came on after DP. Second, DP had signed a contract which declared they would go on stage at a specific time in the evening so they would be the first band with the stage lights on. When the festival arrangers wanted them to go on their stage clothes hadn't arrived and they had also been promised no camera on stage... A contract is a contract so Ritchie of course decided that he was gonna keep his side of the agreement. And locked himself inside his caravan! It makes perfect sense to me, can't see that it would be "diva" or typical of the 70s. Ritchie tells the story himself here: th-cam.com/video/2dUsL9Q6EJw/w-d-xo.html (part 1) th-cam.com/video/9WgcY72fy1U/w-d-xo.html (part 2)
My favorite group growing up as a teen in the 70's, they just dropped a new album , a great tune to check out is "Lazy Sod", the album features 3 original members,Ian Gillian, Ian paice, and Roger glover on bass
Ian Gillan is the singer. And he has a five octave range. Can't really go wrong with any Deep Purple song. But lazy and Highway Star are tops. Highway Star evokes another song call Radar Love by Golden Earring. I'm not one for new music. Haven't cared for much since the 90s. But I'd like to share a new band I believe they are out of the Netherlands. The music sounds straight out of the 70s. And are so talented they sound like some of the best guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan Mark Knopfler David Gilmour. They have managed to fuse those Styles and make their own.
Ian Paice is the only member of Purple to play on every album Gillan and Glover were replaced by Coverdale and Hughes here. Hughes did sing in Black Country Communion and California Breed with Bonham. Hughes was the vocalist for Trapeze, Black Sabbath, Iommi and the Dead Daisies, not to mention numerous solo albums. David Coverdale also sang in another band you may have heard of...Whitesnake.
Every member, from every incarnation of DP, were the pinnacle of rock & classical musicians. Jon Lord is possibly the best rock keyboardist ever. (And yet Ritchie left just after this, to form Rainbow!) Since you like DP and liked the classical, you should watch the LIVE 1969 Deep Purple “Concerto For Group & Orchestra” composed by Jon Lord. Deep Purple playing in concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. It was live TV broadcast, Sept. 1969 - so the video is widely available. It’s long…Maybe just try this third movement! th-cam.com/video/jGuxfcHt268/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ET67KyMm3xjHJ_1O
Coverdale of course is better known for being the frontman for Whitesnake. This incarnation of Purple didn't last very long and for some avid Purple fan's is very devisive
Thank you for doing Deep Purple! One of the best bands in history! Please, continue down the rabbit hole! Maybe watch the full show of California Jam (which this "Burn" video is taken from) th-cam.com/video/ExQDQ-DYKts/w-d-xo.html An amazing concert no doubt! Ritchie tells the whole background story of the California Jam himself here: th-cam.com/video/2dUsL9Q6EJw/w-d-xo.html (part 1) th-cam.com/video/9WgcY72fy1U/w-d-xo.html (part 2)
Great reaction as always. I prefer Ian Gillan the original lead vocalist. Check out Perfect Strangers. They had a big comeback in 84 with this album and song.
It is a matter of taste but I am really happy that Coverdale was in this lineup. Glenn just ruins most of the music with his high-pitch falsettoes. Just so tiring to listen to.
Great reaction! Ian Paice has been the drummer in all incarnations of Deep Purple, all the way back to 1968. MkII, with Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (base) is the most "classic" lineup. Jon Lord left the band in 2002 and passed away in 2012. Don Airey has been playing keyboard since then. Steve Morse joined on guitar in 1994 and left in 2022 due to his wife's illness. Simon McBride joined then. They just released the album "=1". Some tracks to check out: The studio version of Burn. You will love Ian Paice even more. Highway Star, live from "Made in Japan", the best live album ever by any group. Here with a fan made video. The sound is absolutely spectacular. Recorded by Martin Birch. th-cam.com/video/7zKAS7XOWaQ/w-d-xo.html Speed King, with Steve Morse, live at Montreux (all versions are good and all are different): th-cam.com/video/PEhZzZYAWoo/w-d-xo.html
Here I have a newer version from "Burn". It is from the Celebrationconcert for John Lord. And one of the singer is Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Glen Hughes ist on bass! th-cam.com/video/do_BgiF9y0U/w-d-xo.html

When you get to that song listen to the live version from Largo MD 1977 or Houston Texas 77.
the main riff from "Burn" is in turn inspired by and even ripped off from "Fascinating rhtyhtm" by Gershwin.
DEEP PURPLE - "Perfect Strangers" - the album entire
I love that albums since it was released, its my favourite Deep purple album.
Perfect Strangers is an awesome album.
Great reaction my friend,More Deep Purple Please
Excellent dude..Space Truckin live 1973 from Hofstra university in New York..
One of my fave DP tracks because of Ian's drumming. Another great track is Fireball.
Ian Paice is one of my top 2 favorite drummers!
1a - Tommy Aldridge
1b - Ian Paice
At age 16, in the late 70s I could play a passable version of this on the drums. Not a great version, but man was it fun,!!!
That’s awesome! This is such a cool track! You still play?! 🥁
@@setonhillstudios thank you! I do not, but the foundation has always been there for how I listen to music. You would love learning this one 😉
@@PaulThoresen I gotta get my chops back up cause I haven’t played in a bit myself! Definitely want to do some drum covers on here soon! 🤘🏻
Oh cool! I gotta check out their new album! That’s a crazy lineup right there! Thanks for sharing!
Deep Purple Mk3 lineup was very good, songs like "Stormbringer", "Sail Away", & "Mistreated" are great songs. More DP is a good thing. Ritchie & Lord are 2 of the very best.
What does Mk3 mean? Or stand for?
@@snakeinthegrass7443 MK3 is for Mark 3 lineup was the third iteration of the band (included David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass). @@snakeinthegrass7443 I would say a combination of personal issues, musical strives that don't match and so on. But imagine, they've been going since 1968.
Thanks for all the info as usual! Appreciate it!

He plays great here but the sound is bad and drums are low in the mix.
Hey brother I just discovered your channel the other day. Watched your Kiss Midnight Special reactions, then Purple, Rainbow and Dio. I’m 52 and grew up on these bands and performances, and I love seeing your enthusiastic reactions to them as you discover them.

Too bad Ian Paice didn't get more screen time, because he absolutely OWNS this song.
Check out the whole performance on DVD, it's one of the best of all time.
In my opinion the most epic song they've ever recorded ist "April"...! a 14 min. tune with an orchestra, incl. 2 min. of great lyrics: "Grey sky where it should be blue! Grey sky where I should see you!"
This was the California Jam in 1974, the same festival that Black Sabbath played at ! xx
Jon Lord the Lord of the keyboard!!!!
So good!!! 🔥🔥🔥
He used to have a fan club called "John Lord's legendary organ"
Glen has always been a beast - be it as bassist, a singer or party boy and what we call in Poland "jebaka" (say yeh-BAH-kah) (you might say "horndawg").
a performance you need to see is live in belgium 1969, epic 😎

Rainbows were popular in the 70´s (for other reasons than today). The band Elf that was Dio´s band before Rainbow were created toured a lot with Deep purple and this is how Blackmore got to know Dio and started Rainbow together with him, the rest of the members of the band Elf besides the guitarplayer also joined Rainbow and play on the first album, so memberwise its Elf with Blackmore on guitar.
Glenn "the voice of rock" Hughes
You should listen to Deep Purple doing Mistreated with Coverdale. Then listen to the same track with Dio in Rainbow.
Ian Paice played on Child in time as well, he has been with the band since the beginning.

I left out Rick Wakeman.
Hey there man , this is [was] Cal jam 74 . ELP topped the bill and Ritchie was pissed off that purple werent headline act.
Haha 😂 That’s one way of doing it! That’s wild!
@@setonhillstudios Crazy huh...I remember seeing some of this on TV when I was a kid.
that's not what happend.
Ritchie tells the story himself here:

I was there.
That’s awesome!!! I am jealous! 😁
