    Great reaction. I Highly recommend listening to the song "Mistreated" from the 1977 Munich concert. Dio's singing is beyond good, but Ritchie's solo is the type of solo you would love..... a mixture of soft notes and melodic sound and then back to the main riff....so good.

      Rainbow's song 'Gates of Babylon' is amazing, check it out. Dio didn't have any vocal training, he said the years he spent playing trumpet got him on the right path with the correct breathing from his diaphragm. THE best metal singer, and had the ability to sing other genres. Rainbow's 'Rainbow Eyes' is a beautiful ballad with a soft vocal from the sublime Ronnie James Dio.

  • @jimshelby406
    @jimshelby406 3 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    One of the truly great vocalists in all of music history. He's known as a singer but most forget he was a musician first and exceptional one at that (he actually turned down a scholarship from the Juilliard School of Music) and it was his ability to communicate with the likes of Blackmore and lommi musically that made him such a force and is a big reason he's the common denominator in 3 of the genres greatest albums of all time in Rainbow's Rising, Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell & Dio's Holy Diver. That's quite an achievement if you think about it... co-wrote 3 of the greatest hard rock/heavy metal albums of all time in a 7 year stretch with 3 different bands.
    The only thing he doesn't have at the moment is a spot in the rock n roll hall of fame. I know he could've probably cared less but his fans care and he belongs in there.
    An argument can easily be made, that Ronnie is not only the greatest vocalist the genre has ever seen or ever will but also the most influential artist the genre has ever seen. From his vocals, his lyrical style, from progressive metal to power metal, from the way he works the on stage to the way he deals with the press and from his work on the Hear 'n' Aid PROJECT to his devotion to his fan base.
    There isnt a singer in the rock and the metal world that Ronnie hasn't influenced and all in a positive way.
    He shouldn't just be in the hall of fame they should rename a heavy metal wing after him. That's how important he was to the genre.
    The only thing bigger than his voice was his heart. He was truly a great man who just happened to make music and sing very very well.
    The world will never
    see another one like him.

      Pure love. Great comment. But I do wish talent and education were distributed more fairly in this world because you can make ten happy people out of Dio who also make other people happy with their talent.
      I love the way you put emphasis on the person himself, his personality, humaneness, decency. That's an inspiration that doesn't need any talent. We don't need any talent to learn to behave like Dio. I am wondering why rock is so much about bad boys and not about Dio, whom Ritchie couldn't get to wear black(nothing against black :-)) , who got up on stage and sang his heart out with his curly hair and hippie pants. All these music magazines, channels... Filtering him out to talk about cocaine exploits of some frontman douche, rather than the douche's music, either. The promotion of consumerism, sex, drugs and... Whoever came up with it... Sorry for the lengthy rant. I just liked your comment too much I guess. It sent me into contemplation.

      Wonderful comment, still many years later and after hearing many amazing rock singers no one blows my mind with their voice and artistry like Dio does, as an artist he has a huge part in my heart. I don't understand why he isn't in the rock and roll hall of fame considering his influence and insane voice, except fans it's like people don't understandthe actual influence he has had and that makes me very sad, so incredibly unfair towards a person and artists like Ronnie and his fans. But I have noticed too that they're not huge fans of metal even when it's influence comes from rock and blues. Which is so ridiculous as some of the best musicians and singers are in that genre of music.

    This is one of the greatest rock songs there will ever be imo. I get where you are coming from with the theatrical sound here. When you listen you can see what's happening as the story unfolds. Every bit of this song is intentionally written to tell this story. Even as I hear the guitar solo I picture the tower finished and the wizard climbs up jumps off to fly and crashes to the ground. This band in this time is a talent I don't think we will ever see again in rock. The thought and attention to detail in this song as a whole is unsurpassed. Good reaction. The other amazing thing about this song is large portions are based around a single chord. Blackmores solo is almost entirely over a single chord. One chord. And instead of running around scales or cheezy blues licks he starts using a slide - yep a slide, then creates a rising, growing tension and texture building to a crescendo using super fast picked notes before once again going into those gorgeous rich slow harmonic minor runs at the end. Is it any wonder he is considered a master of his genre.

    The funny thing about Dio is that he said he never had any formal vocal training. He attributed his singing ability to the breathing skills he developed playing French horn.
    Also, in addition to any Rainbow songs people recommend to you here, I definitely suggest listening to his work with Black Sabbath, in particular “Heaven and Hell” and “Children of the Sea”.
    Oh, and since you mentioned liking Queen, how about some Queen deep-cuts from their early years. I’d love to hear to talk about “Prophet’s Song”.

    • @jimshelby406
      @jimshelby406 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Eric Schwenke You’re right about Ronnie never taking vocal lessons of any kind but It was the trumpet not the french horn and he started playing at age 5 and took daily lessons and played until age 17. He was so proficient at the Trumpet that he was offered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music but turned it down to focus on rock and roll. Another interesting fact about Ronnie it that he didn’t start singing until he was 17 and even then he didn’t want to but they had lost the lead singer in the band and he was the only one who sounded good out of the remaining 3 members. Because of this he put the trumpet down and picked up he bass guitar and it wasn’t until after the first Elf album that he put the bass down to concentrate entirely on singing. Strange to think that one of the greatest vocalist, regardless of genre, in the history of music never really wanted to sing in the first place.

    No vocal training at all for Ronnie, but he played trumpet from age 5 until about 15, great breath support came from that I'm sure! Dio IS the Godfather of rock singers, but to really appreciate his talent, you need to watch him live. Check out Rainbow 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977. There is SO much outstanding Dio from the band Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven and Hell. There's even a great video of Dio with Deep Purple and Orchestra singing 'Sitting on a Dream/Love is All', very different music than his bands, but his voice is angelic. The most amazing singer ever.

    I'm a huge Ronnie Jame Dio fan, one of the best rock voices ever, if not any styule of music. Plus if you go back he was in a doo-woop band in the 60's before doing hard rock/heavy metal. Plus, he instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet . I will say this I'm not a singer...I can't carry a note in a bucket, my wife she's been church chior for years, but when I hear DIO'S voice it just floors me every time every song I hear from him.

      I have never heard anything about that and could not even find any facts to back that up. He was a trumpet as a child which he contributed to his ability to sing (since he had trained up your lung capacity by playing the trumpet)

    • @jalkabre5904

    Ronnie James Dio's vocal technique and breath control comes from his formative years blowing a trumpet.
    The lyrics to this song were inspired by a 1954 film: The Silver Chalice starring Jack Palance.
