You can fit a replacement hinge for around £6 but decent videoing by good use of a tripod, I didn’t bother undoing cable just left card standing by door, I also peeled the cover took a bit longer but much neater finish and more secure from water ingress, I would also not use screwdrivers to remove trim as they can scratch I have a cheap set of plastic trim removal levers paid for themselves several times over. One good tip I found was you can fit a new hinge by unscrewing the old hinge and screwing in the new hinge via the hole in the door of the hinge location. I’ve experienced the bad side of removing the rod but learned a lot by working out how it goes back in top and bottom, appreciate your help in posting this video especially if I have to replace drivers handle and barrel.

I found the trickiest bit was to get the link rod off to make space to remove the handle as you say it's very tight space.
My dad came round just as I finished the job and i can't beleive it when I shut the door... heard a thud follow by his laugh... I had left the torch in the door just like you did... just as I was about to show off to the old man :'D

Thanks aaanton11, I followed your video today to fix the drivers handle on my daughters Fiat 500. I managed to replace just the hinge without loosening the lock end of the handle. Putting a stubby phillip’s screwdriver through the inside of the hole (where you removed the nut for the handle) gives you access to the screw to release the hinge. Using a stubby screwdriver gives you better purchase and a bit more umph!!

Thanks for the video, changed the handle on drivers side today. Air was blue whilst trying to release the blue & red clips, found pushing them out in like a downward motion worked. Also rod at the top just couldn't release it from the inside, so having pushed it so far out of the door, removed it from the outside, used a screwdriver to pop both the rod and white plastic retainer. Thanks again, wouldn't have attempted it without your video.

This was a great help for me. I was really struggling to disconnect the rod from the back of the handle from inside . Ended up gripping it with a pair of pliers to get a straight pull and it came off really easily after about 15 minutes of stressing previously

Thanks for the video - really helpful. I had exactly the same issue getting the door handle back onto the door. I tried the banging technique but no luck. I was focusing on getting the lower lugs to engage but they simply would not. Then I twigged that although the top lugs looked ok and engaged, the top front one hadn't really due to the plastic. This accounted for why the screw hole on the lock didn't align with the door hole. My fix was to focus on getting the handle to move up the door beyond what it initially wanted to do - and to align with the bolt hole in the door. Your video gave me confident to keep going! It is always the simplest of things that seem to take the time!

Just a note that I found might help with the new handle going back on issues, after lots of banging like you said, with no joy.
I put the retaining screw back in and slowly tightened it whilst adding pressure on the handle and it slid right in.

Thank you so much - I did this yesterday and you saved me a lot of money, hahah. But it was kind of difficult and I did it over 2 times. I struggled a lot with the door and lock mechanisms beacuse there not much room to work with. The first time I thought I was done the lock didnt work and the car locked and unlocked everytime. But I fixed it the second time and the door handle works fine as well as the lock! Thank you :)

Thanks for the great tutorial, just finished the wife’s Fiat 500. Managed to get it all done as described struggled to get the handle off, as I couldn’t for the life of me get the springs off at the back, eventually the whole came through with a bit of force, thankfully front panel was unscathed! New one went it sweet and didn’t need to bang or jiffy it, the “click” happened when I tightened the lug on the side of the door. Had a torch moment when I realised I forgot to reclip the door to the cable, and only realised once everything was back on!! Thanks again though really good video and very well set out.

Loved your vid. Helped me greatly. Still had to use my small file set to clean off the casting of the new handle, just to get it to pop in and slide in place. Also had to move the plastic grommet or retainer, from the old handle to the new. This was the white circular bit of plastic that held the upper armature in place. Laughed at the torch left in the door. And then....I proceeded to do the EXACT SAME THING. By the time my son got back into his 2012 500 Pop, we had no time to remove the card and fish it out. Oh well, maybe next time.

excellent video - took me about 45 mins to fit. Hardest bit was unclipping the red and blue rod ends. Access/viewing was really tricky - cutting a second hole in the liner below the first helped a lot.

Great video, thankyou for the detailed camera angles of the internal mechanisms. I found cutting the membrane in 2 places to allow for a 2nd hand super helpful, I cut out the large square at the base of the door as well as just behind the handle.

thank-you couldn't have done this without your help mate..had to lightly sand the lip of door to help ease the handle through (after struggling for over an hour) but the relief when I heard it click into place...I now know how the wife felt after being in labour 😁 i also managed to break the small red clip which had to replace at £11 from amazon but everything's perfect now 👍

Great little tutorial.
I found that if you wedge the new handle in the open position when fitting the new handle it slips straight in....no walloping required!
To make sure I didn't scratch the paint with the front bolt I wrapped a rag around it and when putting the rod on to the lock itself (not handle) if you put the key to the lock position it moves the tab round so it isn't obscured.
Whole job after watching your tutorial 36 minutes.

You sir are a legend. Did my girlfriend's driver handle. Barrel was a pain in the backside to change though. It wouldn't stick in the new handle and kept coming out. Eventually got it to stay and works perfectly now. My hands are full of little tiny cuts now from the door 😂Thank you so much!

Thankyou so much for this it is the most helpful of the videos I watched I would not have succeeded without it . A wretched job because of the tight access and darkness and crazy design which is so awkward - like changing your underwear in the dark without undressing. One wrinkle I discovered installing the new handle where there is zero maneuvering room; I slackened the three fasteners around the lock cylinder assembly slightly to give a hair more space between the door and the handle seals which allowed enough play to get the lock flush with the door - final positioning required an upward and then inward movement to allow the lower lugs to clear the opening and seat before moving the handle rightward to secure it.

Great video! I just replaced (tried to) my Fiat500 Driver Side handle and your video instructions helped. My Amazon bought replacement handle would not fit into the door no matter how hard I tried (casting not sized properly) I ended up just using the old handle and taking the part from the new handle that I needed which was the front pivot. All set.

I just wanted to add that the North American Fiat 500 has two additional screws securing the interior door panel, but otherwise everything was exactly the same.

1.5 years later my passenger side handle hinge broke…
It was a bit easier to do. The door handle only has one rod to disconnect, as it doesn’t have a lock cylinder mechanism. The rod also popped right off and fell into the bottom of the door, so I had to fish it out from down there.

I’ve just done this job on my wife’s Abarth. The handles are satin finish and quite expensive so I used the replacement hinge only. The handle came off and went back in really easily maybe because it’s the original part.

I did this today. A bit hairy but it worked - thanks. The red and blue plastic clips on the bottom of the rods were tight and I couldn't disengage them at first. Thinking it might be the February cold I pushed a paint stripper into the void - on hairdryer heat setting - for 30 seconds and it softened the plastic perfectly, they released with ease!

I did one of these on my neighbours, I opted to just change the hinge as she hadn't much spare money and the hinge is only £7.99. No need to remove the whole handle, just get someone to hold the hinge end away from the door while you put the little screw in that holds the hinge inside the handle. I used a screwdriver bit with a small spanner to drive it from the side. Takes longer to remove the door card and the screw that holds the handle in than to actually fit the new hinge. I taped off the hinge end while working to protect the paint finish. These handles break because the hinge end seizes up, I give them a squirt of oil every now and then for her now just to keep them moving. As always a great video and thanks.

Only thing I would add is when putting on the link rod on the red one check the rod is the right way round as the end that goes into the top has a notch and is slightly longer. @@aaanton11 Job is done , but buyer beware of replacement part . The little round clip that holds the top part of the linkage is to large and would not hold the link in place. I solved this by fabricating a new link rod with a longer finger that would accept a speed nut at the back. Works great now! Also I filed the opening where it it was to tight so that the handle would slip in more easily.

@@aaanton11 No worries! Quick question for you - we’ve just taken it out for a spin and now can only open the door from the outside. Guessing one of the rods has vibrated loose and we can clip it back in?
Thank you! I didn't have trouble removing and putting in the handle. However, I did have trouble connecting the cables. In your video, it seems your cables accessible. In my 2012 Abarth, i have to reach over through a small window. It was not cool at all.

Honest video.... getting in the new handle does require some gentle pushing and sliding, once i got the top part lined up, it did slide back easier but there is not alot of give in it!! took me about 90 mins all done i think..👍👍

I finally did it.
1. Lost red clip inside door.
2. Found it again.
3. My replacement door handle had no screw thread. Refitted original with the hinge from the replacement.
4. Messed up internal door handle linkage. Took panel off again, refitted it.
5. All working.
