When demonstrating the 'explosion' problem it appeared as though the bottles were completely upside-down. Just a tip this usually happens because the ball is in the cap (due to gravity). Holding the bottle at a 45 degree angle should avoid this problem in most cases.
While accurate, she's obviously used these kinds of bottles before and probably knows the difference between ball activated explosions and a clog. It is good to share that the balls will also cause this issue, but I don't think that was the only factor at play.
in case ppl did not know D&L is a company based out of poland, their plastic is high quality made in poland and not china. They make minis for the tabletop game conquest as well.
Also, they are incredibly fast in their delivery and have a small backlog of previous Kickstarter items that you can get for a small discount when Deuslair launches. Some cool terrain and more minis (if you need them).
I'll second the high-quality bit. Their Conquest stuff that I've dealt with is gorgeous, and the plastic is nicely dense and chunky, very substantial feeling. Good stuff.
I thinks it’s the ball bearing inside. If you turn the bottle completely over…the bearing covers the hole some of the time. If you tilt it on the side the ball won’t clog the nozzle
That's what I was thinking. They could make the blendable nature of v1 a feature. I don't paint as much as many folks, but loved the way they worked. I imagine I'll like the new version as well, but I can see a place for both.

What bothers me most is the clogging. I know already that I will at some point ruin my clothes or hardware with a load of spilled paint. :(
seems like Army Painter was serious about that whole "listening and improving" thing. definitely haven't had the best experience with their products in past but I might check out some of the SP2 line.
Your problem isnt that they are getting clogged, the steel ball bearing when you hold the bottle vertically is getting stuck in the nozzle and when you apply pressure the top cap blows off. Try holding it at a 45, if you feel resistance, dont keep applying pressure.
The clogging thing is fairly common with narrow-tip bottles. I often encounter it with Reaper's paints, for example (though I have no reference as to whether it's a bigger issue for speed paints than others). Reaper even sells a "pokey tool" with is basically a blunt-ish needle with a big decorative head (their main one uses a skull of course, but they occasionally do variants).
Thanks a lot for impression video and mainly for mentioning smell. I mostly paint at work during lunchbreaks and sometimes with kiddo at home. Both environments sensitive to smell, so I´ll definitely be picking single bottle first.
None of my colors inside the 2.0 mega set was clogged. Putting the bottle 90 degree upside is a bad idea with steel balls inside a dropper bottle. But it is not a fault of the Army Painter range. It happens with Vallejo and every other dropper bottle too. It is more a user error than a desing error. The other pros and cons are valid in my opinion. Especially if you are used to blending the color together you have to do it right away as long as they are still wet (wet blending) like with normal acrylic paints. So if you know it you can work with it.
I'm in the same camp about being sad about NOT having reactivation... blending is so awesome and easy with the old ones. Wondering if I should buy another set of 1.0 paints to have more on hand now :D

I've had that bottle explosion thing happen to me a couple of times with the 1.0 speedpaints. I don't paint very often so I think the speedpaints just dry in the nozzle relatively quickly. Maybe the 2.0 is a little more prone to the problem but the problem was there with 1.0.

The older speedpaints had the same problem. You just need to knock the shaker ball out of the tip. that's what causes the clog but if they are thicker, it might happen a bit more.
I know you're miss the reactivation blending... but for someone with the attention span of a goldfish the fast drying looks perfect for me lol. Would a bit of water or extra medium make blending possible?

I had the same issue with the bottles clogging with the original speedpaints, and unless the bottles are a lot looser fit than the originals, then you it should be obvious when you need to poke the top. Its only been an issue for me when I tried to force them to come out.
Good watch. This coincides with the observations in my video. As I'm one of those who prefer more stable paints without reactivation I prefer the new formula. Didn't have much issues with clogged tips though!

Honestly sounds to me like I'm going to need to find all the 1.0 paints i can and hold on to them.
these paints are great. I have the full range at home and almost use them exclusively. blending is far easier with a soft dry brush afterwards . gives the same effect as a wet blend. make sure to use a dampening pad for your dry brush if you do this because it will make your paint chalky otherwise.
Honestly I thought reactivation was a useful feature rather than an issue, sorry to see they removed that feature of them. I won't be rushing out to get v2.0
Howling Sand is in THE BIGGEST set of 90 paints (coming out soon) as well as on it's own, the set I'm looking at in this video is technically the medium sized set (50 paints)
Please add the new paints from the 2.0 set to your reference page of painted skinks as soon as you can. I use that page all the time when picking out color schemes for models and it is really helpful in getting a sense for how a color really looks after it dries. Thanks!
I wonder if mixing the new speedpaints with the original medium might work to allow blending for those who want to use them for that? Otherwise, you could suggest to Army Painter that they need to develop a blending medium.
if you want a blending medium, just use paint retarder. It slows drying times for paint its pretty cheap. I've been using in on acrylic paint for years now
Very cool! I have mixed feelings on the reactivation going away. I do prefer my paints not to reactivate as a general rule as it can lead to unpredictable behavior. But having said that, I do find myself using the reactivation properties on Speedpaint 1.0 all the time. I just used it last night when painting a Frosthaven mini. The mini is supposed to have glowing icy fists. So I zenithal white over a dark blue base coat. Then I hit the fists with Magic blue being quite careless in the application. Then after a little bit of dry time I used a damp brush to remove the Magic Blue off the raised parts of the ice fists. The final effect is pretty great and would've taken more steps to achieve with Contrast or (presumably) speedpaint 2.0 or a normal set of paints. While I do like oils and have used them, they are messier and require more cleanup than Acrylics so I really don't want to have to get them out for something like this mini. In the end it wouldn't have saved me any time like the Speedpaint 1.0 did.
+1 I personally love the reactivation. Now I have to search for the original formula. I did pick up the original $99 set 😊 a year ago when it first came out.
MWMinis also ran into the clogging but attributed it to the ball bearings. Either way, I hope they iterate further. They seem to be keeping their ears perked up right now.
This happened with the other iterations and it’s my exclusive to SP, with the mixing balls, it makes it easier for the nozzles to clog, which is why we recommend if the paint is sticking that you use a thumbtack or a needle to poke the bottle
artist acrylic inks like liquitex reactivate pretty easily. Mix it with some matte medium and some flow-aid (or water with a drop of dish soap) and you have a pretty great stand-in for speed/contrast/xpress paint
Dana, can we mix the SP 2.0 with SP medium or a little acrylic retarder to open up reactivation again? If it's just the drying time then I'd imagine we have potential workarounds?
I've been working through the set alongside my old speed-paints. The new colours are nice as are the metallics, but overall I prefer the old formula so far. I miss being able to wipe away an accidental bit of paint with a wet brush. It also seems to clog the brush up quicker and water doesn't clear it. I've had to use my brush soap.
Regarding the starter brush, I am a relatively simple painter (I mostly just care for table top ready) and have vision problems. The brush I am currently using is a one of the smallest ones I found at a game store because I'm not good enough to get into small details with a larger brush. I almost never use the brush which came with my Speedpaint 1.0 set; the smaller brush would be much more helpful for me.
It would be great if they could create a line of slow dryers. I fully agree that a line called "Speed Paints" shouldn't reactivate and should dry quickly, but an "Elite" or "Master" line? Advertising them as an oil style paint would give them a nice sub set of colors within the range, they'd just need a disclaimer that they require sealing to avoid reactivating them
I really appreciate the transparency on the issue, it certainly seems like you aren’t holding back even though you have a professional relationship with AP. IMO it’s probably a good thing that reactivation is gone as it’s kind of against the products purpose, wet blending is not something beginners or people speed painting are going to want dabble with it.
Great video again! That paint outburst looked like a nightmare!!! Was Howling Sand as color a tribute to your contribution btw? I was thinking about that as soon as I've seen it ^^
You may want to contact Warhipster. He pretty much ruled the 2.0 out due to the 2hr long dry time. He was getting reactivation if he didn't wait... and the waiting killed the use factor for him. If you traded methods, you both might get more out of the new AP 2.0.
Hows the cracking? I had the starter set of the 1.0 and Im looking to replace it since most of my paints are empty. My lgs has the mega set of 2.0 and I was wanting to get it but I hear so many bad things regarding cracking. I loved 1.0 so I would hate if I got the 2.0 and suddenly had a ton of cracking. Worth noting I almost never blended with the 1.0.
Great video! You mentioned an oil wash non toxic alternative near the end of the video. Just wondering what the product is or if that video is still coming. Ty for all ur hard work!
I can see 'speed paints' needing to dry FAST but yeah, along with the smell that extra fast drying time would be a turn off. Those bottles gotta go too. My guess is the drying accelerator is the culprit. I'd be curious to see if they'll cure in bottle like some older Citadel inks did.
I love that Speedpaints (v1) are reactivating and I thought it is a great feature as I make some mistakes during speedpainting. But I know I will be able to reactivate the paint and blend it later with additional color to create a smooth transition (I can even overspread the paint intentionally to prepare for some sort of "color bounce"/"atmospheric light"). I was hoping that this feature would be still present to some degree in version 2.0. :( Really sad to see it gone.
Will you be testing ways to blend those new version of paints? I was counting they keep the formula, but now we will have two versions of the same brand and new way of blending colors would be nice :)
I’m quite curious about more fleshy tones in their range, Crusader Skin is a bit limited unless you put it on completly white base. It gets very bland and ashy when you try to use it over zenithal.
We agree. It was designed for being over a white base, long before the Lord Almighty Rob the Honest Wargamer invented Slap Chap ;) but, that’s also why we were eager to get more skin tones in the range for more options.
Have you tried blending with isopropyl? I saw an interesting video where someone was comparing 3 different inks and to my surprise acrylic inks reactivated with isopropyl. I wonder if you could use this as a way to get your blending back...
Thank you for the video. I've been very curious about these new paints myself, and especially the metals. Will you be updating the reference chart on your website when you get the whole bundle? I like to use it whenever I start a new project.
Can you mix the 2.0 Speed Paint with the 1.0 Medium? Would that give you the best of both worlds with the blending and still allow you to use them unmixxed for the newwer qualities?
Three items of note. One, giving a disclaimer for scent-sensitive people is really nice. I've spent enough time in art studios and industrial environments that the smell of bleach is indistinguishable from fresh air at this point, but it definitely is something more reviewers should discuss more for those people who struggle. Second, those minis are really interesting. I have never heard of Deuslair before, and now am very stoked to check out the models. I love stuff that is a mix of traditional fantasy and sci-fi, which is why 40k is such a big staple on my tabletop. And third, I really wasn't sold on Speed Paints after I saw Pete the Wargamer's recent Daemon Primarch Leman Russ kitbash which he demonstrated the line with. I usually love his style, but his Leman Russ was the first Dornian Heresy model he has ever made that I didn't like at all. I fully assumed it was an issue with the paints and was ready to write off the line, but it seems more likely now that Speed Paints just don't work with his more unique style. As your style is far more like my own personal painting technique, I am much more confident about using the range myself, because these two turned out beautifully.
I think the original speedpaint was better, I really liked the reactivation feature, you could do an easy highlight just by using a damp cotton bud to wipe off the highest points, it was also really easy yo lighten thd whole effect or even mix on thd model with a darker colour in areas, it reminded me of working with oil washes.
What color green is that? I'm thinking of getting striking scorpions green for my necrons but will stick to army painter if their neon green color is just as good
I mean, it makes sense that "speed" paint should dry fast and not reactivate, but I'm sad to see the blending capabilities go. Maybe they could rebrand the original formula as some other line? In the meantime, I guess I'd better get more 1.0 medium because I have an idea that banks on the blending capabilities. :x
What are you placing the drops of paint on for these new paints? How long do they stay wet? Are you trying smaller drop since they may dry quicker? I currently place a droplet of APSP on a tile and the drop stays wet for most of the sections I work on.
Not for nothing, but I have put all my citedel contrast paints in dropper bottles and the Scale75 instant colors come in dropper bottles…they to get clogged and I have to de-clogg them from time to time. I think it is just part of the paint…
Now all I want to know is, what is this magical oil wash substitute?! Is the new video about it out now? Ok...how about now? Grrrrr....tap, tap tap....now? Hrmph.
damn, thats incredibly sad. I just got finished painting up a whole Nighthaunt army using the amazing wet blending capabilities of speedpaints+contrasts, and losing that is a real bummer. I wonder if having the two colors "live" and working very quickly over an area could achieve similar results, as I did mostly 'wet brush' blending when I did my ghouls - starting with the weaker tone, and dipping the brush into the stronger tone to start the blend on the brush as I added it to the model. Maybe a modification of workflow can achieve similar things with these paints, as I have using that wet-brush method been able to achieve pretty decent blends using just citadel contrasts.
Great video as always! I can't be the only one who doesn't think contrast paints look good, right?! It doesn't matter than the brand, Citadel, Army Painter, etc... Maybe I'm wrong here but I think having normal acrylic with a shade looks way better. Also, an airbrush helps with the speed and looks way better.
They are great for beginners and people looking to get minis on the tabletop quick. We also love using them for quick base coats and mixed with acrylics for blending and layering.
That's fair, taste is personal. But for me the speed paint is generally excellent and a lot faster to use. It is more likely I'll paint with speed paint than without it, and it looks a lot better than no paint.
It is, the mixing balls exasperate it a bit. Which is why we recommend in our Best Practice video, to use a pins or cocktail stick to clear the nozzle if it feels stuck before squeezing too hard.
Well, clogging bottles and shorter dryig time goes in pair. New resin seems to be a culprit. Awesome job on the minis btw. Will You build a stock of speed paints 1.0 now? ;)
When demonstrating the 'explosion' problem it appeared as though the bottles were completely upside-down. Just a tip this usually happens because the ball is in the cap (due to gravity). Holding the bottle at a 45 degree angle should avoid this problem in most cases.
It's explain in the official speed paint video Army painter did years ago. Do not use it fully upside-down since the ball can to that.
Yeah, its not a new problem. I had the same issue a few times with the old speedpaints.
While accurate, she's obviously used these kinds of bottles before and probably knows the difference between ball activated explosions and a clog.

I did pick up the original $99 set 😊 a year ago when it first came out.
mad respek for the TLDNR + disclaimer transparency Dana!
I'm sad about the reactivation gone too. i dont know another product that is similar to SP1.0:( looking forward to the non toxic oil wash!!
artist acrylic inks like liquitex reactivate pretty easily. Mix it with some matte medium and some flow-aid (or water with a drop of dish soap) and you have a pretty great stand-in for speed/contrast/xpress paint
Thanks for mentioning the smell. I’m super scent sensitive!
honestly if the reactivation wasn't an issue in the first version the results are amazing for half the price... but Vallejo came
I love Vallejo paints, and really want to try their new Xpress color line, but their lack of availability is an issue.
So the 1.0 version was best. Fast dry means no time for errors while painting.
Howling sand, love it!
Check out my video on Gouache from a few months ago! I cover it there!
Thank you for the informative video.
Great video, as always! Tu’ur looks very cool in these colors! :D
Great Minis, as always
Foreshadowing acrylic gouache 👀
Did you try using the speed paint medium to help wet blend? Thanks
Is there an easy way to tell the 1.0 apart from the 2.0?
If I wanted to wet blend with these type of paint, what brand still offers that ability?
I think the original speedpaint was better, I really liked the reactivation feature, you could do an easy highlight just by using a damp cotton bud to wipe off the highest points, it was also really easy yo lighten thd whole effect or even mix on thd model with a darker colour in areas, it reminded me of working with oil washes.
What color green is that? I'm thinking of getting striking scorpions green for my necrons but will stick to army painter if their neon green color is just as good
You can please some people some of the time but not all of the people ALL of the time. I wonder if the speedpaint medium will help with the blending.
Dungeons & Lasers also has some great dragons for cheap. Maybe you can paint one of those for the channel sometime.
Thought I was the only one that used an airbrush needle to clear dropper bottles :)
What are you placing the drops of paint on for these new paints? How long do they stay wet? Are you trying smaller drop since they may dry quicker? I currently place a droplet of APSP on a tile and the drop stays wet for most of the sections I work on.
Your bottle of broadsword steel looks to be a very lighter color than mine... Mine is very blue... Hmmm...
I think they should simply release the old SP-medium as its own thing. Call it Blending Medium or something. Win win, no?
Hard yes. If they did that, I would grab at least a few! Sadly I have no use for them as they currently stand.
It is available already, I'm definitely going to buy some on my next paint shopping trip.
@@r4dwolf But they're probably changing over to 2.0, so that'll no longer be available
Not for nothing, but I have put all my citedel contrast paints in dropper bottles and the Scale75 instant colors come in dropper bottles…they to get clogged and I have to de-clogg them from time to time. I think it is just part of the paint…
It is. It’s a loose paint and a tendency of them.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I've never noticed a smell. Interesting.
Huh bottles getting clogged was something i thought was normal with acrylic paint. Sometimes they just pop with the right pressure.
It is, the mixing balls exasperate it a bit. Which is why we recommend in our Best Practice video, to use a pins or cocktail stick to clear the nozzle if it feels stuck before squeezing too hard.
Do you need to cut these with water?
I'm a little disappointed there's no more reactivation as well, but we're definitely in the minority there.
Any chance you're about to have another Seraphon army?
i suppose 90 of them are being bred in spawn pools as we speak LOL
@Vladimir Palik is that code for a resin printer?
@@MrPooleish 😅
I like the smell of SpeedPaints 1.0, so the idea that it is “worse” has me oddly, worriedly excited. That’s a me issue.
Well, clogging bottles and shorter dryig time goes in pair. New resin seems to be a culprit. Awesome job on the minis btw. Will You build a stock of speed paints 1.0 now? ;)
I already have enough 1.0 speedpaints to last me a lifetime! Not to mention I have all the resin and pigments to mix my own whenever I want :)
Honestly, I’m mad that I bought the version 1 early when they released v2 so soon after.
I wonder how "Howling Sand" got its name. XD
