Every Faction of Conquest vs. Speedpaint 2.0

- We've got some fresh paint and some models from Conquest the Last Argument of Kings. Speedpaint 2.0 is a new formula with new colors, and Conquest the last argument of kings has a whooooole lot of cool minis! I've painted enough of one faction in this video to play the skirmish game Conquest: First Blood.
I was able to spend some time with all seven factions of conquest last argument of kings (Conquest LAOK / CLAOK) Hundred Kingdoms, The Spires, The Nords, Dweghom, Nords, W'adrhun, The Old Dominion, and The City States. I think I used a bit from all 49 of the colors in this "megaset" box from army painter.

The left-right audio balance for this vid is off a bit. A tragic accidental click of a slider that I've never intentionally used. It wasn't bad enough for me to notice during proofing, but some of ya'll are definitely picking up on it. Whoops! Sorry! Live and learn, this is one mistake that I won't make again ;-)
I already checked my cable audio 😂
Thanks for acknowledging. Cause I thought that I had to visit a doctor))
Brent, ever so slightly leaning to my left ear 😊😊😊😊
Just watch on mobile with phone speaker. Problem solved.
Thought my headphones were crapping out before I read this. lol
The best grissaile-chop-zenith undercoat in the game! The models turned out incredible, we love ourselves some Conquest at HQ!
Regarding the Nuclear Sunrise: this is something environmental occurring that we did not experience in our testing. We are presently running tests to figure out why and what is happening.
good to know! good luck getting that one fixed up :-)
I appreciate Army Painter because they seem to be the most responsive of the large makers with affordable paints.
Still the Bob Ross of hobbying and mini painting
Tell me, when was he not?
...and even better, still alive!
@@soundgarden8885 never, it's just something I said to him when I met him at Gen Con.
It's the voice, Brent should find another successful career in reading children's bed time audiobooks
Seriously. I can feel my heart rate calming and my blood pressure normalizing when I listen to Brent!
It's deeply comforting!
With the names I whole heartedly agree. With artist's paint, the names are standardized. Also, if you look at artist's grades Liquitex or Golden there is a swatch on the label to freaking see it dry.
There was an absolute mad lad who did a spreadsheet I wish I had kept up with. The work was insane.
He swatched and compared all the hobby paint lines. He took the artist's paint name, and the industry paint names and made a translation guide.
basically:
Red: Ruby's Teets Malgorth's rage Cherry Desire Kryptonian shine So on
The nonsense copyrightable names got translated.
The file was huge and it was so much work, I wouldn't blame him if they stopped.
I know the spreadsheet that you're talking about, it was madness 5 years ago, I'm sure it's worse now if anyone has been keeping up with it. A few hobby paint lines ARE using good names, and they should be encouraged :-)
Vallejo model colour also uses standardised RAL numbers iirc
The spires have to be my favorite take on elves that I've maybe ever seen, in the sense that it's so unique and genuinely makes them feel otherworldly
They are otherworldly and they’re not elves
i mean, 99% of their lore is literally jsut ripped straight from the Wh fantasy lizardmen
FINALLY! Conquest content! I love this game so much! easily my favorite Wargame and I have been in the hobby for almost 20 years :D
it seems pretty cool :-)
@@GoobertownHobbiesthe guy 2+Tough has doing a series about the history and lore of Conquest
Brent's commitment to this channel is wild. Priming mini's in the snow, wow!
when you gotta prime, you gotta prime! :-)
Been there, done that, lol. I wasn't always happy with the results, though. That's the main reason I went with an airbrush setup 🙂
I heard that under a certain temperature, the priming will be affected ? Is that's true ?
@@mathplante depending on your primer it may take a few days for any tackiness to cure away in my experience. I notice this when Im running ny indoor air conditioner.
A five-fold reduction in paint time for a frankly inept painter like me is why I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my first Speedpaints. I've watched your own journey with Army Painter, it's been good to watch a receptive company respond to thoughtful feedback.
Big thumbs-up for printing the pigment name/code on the label if miniature paint manufacturers want to be taken seriously by artists. Sure, they can give it a name like "Eldritch Glow", but also call it what it is: Phthalo Green / PG7.
Keep pressing them, we'll get there eventually! :-)
Great video as always Brent!! I totally understand that paint companies need to create catchy interesting paint names but, I'm very pleased they took your advice and will also be putting a color description as well.
Thanks! yeah the descriptive subtitles is a fair compromise, I'm glad it's happening! :-)
I'm very happy that Army Painter responded to your label comments. It's difficult to gauge what a paint can look like just from the bottle.
Always good to have a nice classic Goobertown speedpaint video.
Good job with the label info increase goobs. Love the user friendly activity of army painter. I want to dive in but I’m not sure what series of paint I’m about to buy! 😅
Conquest looks like a very fun game! You and Casey should do a battle report/gameplay video
Thanks for covering game companies that really deserve our attention and money!
The nice thing about Slapchop Speedpainting is that you start with very vibrant colors. If you spend just a couple extra minutes and drybrush/overbrush on some highlights with ivory or similar warm white, the results increase dramatically. Then, if you also add an oil wash step then it really pops. This workflow is all I use lately!
Lol, they fucked in the first one so they are literally selling you the same paint all again
Great video, as always. To prepare my minis I prime in white, then black speedpaint with a lot of medium (like 1/6, depending on the colors I will use later on the mini), and then matt varnish. Maybe not as fast as the drybrush, but I think the result is smoother.
Thank you for pressing the color description issue! I am color blind to certain shade of greens and blues. This will make my life so much easier. Thanks again and Be Safe!
Good to see you out and about again. I can see how this sort of video would take some time to get out there! MORE!
As a coulourblind person, I do find painting difficult when the names are not very direct or understandable as to what the colour actually is. Thankfully, my wife is quite good with colour theory so she has been a great help.
As always, the science background shows with the methods. Hits home to my own background and I think more TH-cam mini painters could stand to take some advice from your approach. I appreciate the calm cool collected tone and not being shouted at while trying to enjoy a peaceful painting video
I'm so glad that they will add descriptive names! As a lightly colourblind person, the speedpaint names get very confusing very quickly :D
I think it'll be useful to lots of folks :-)
I acquired the starter kit just a week ago and can report that it includes the descriptive names on it, very helpful and great that they've delivered on their promise!
Ah Brents voiceover and speedpainting, great tuseday! The roman themed models looks quite cool! Love the colors you went with.
I love your videos, they are so calm and educational. I'm going to start now to paint, I always was afraid of maiking mistakes and that hold me back, but your videos encouraged me to start painting!
You can do it!!! :-)
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! For campaigning for actual names for paint.
I still have no idea what Necromancer Robes or Werewolf Fur is. I'm glad they're listening to you about this.
It’s really nice to see you painting stuff again! It feels like a lot of the videos lately have been hobby tip/information, but I love seeing someone paint!
I adore speedpaint. I don't have alot of time for painting (I make lore time for the actual game) and they help me get things ready and presentable so quickly. I am a total army painter shill. Great products genuinely
Always happy to see a new goobertown upload. It's not great for my study schedule but I'm always happy to watch and get some wonderful inspiration. Keep up the great work
video done, get back to studying now! :-)
Great video Brent! Slapchop and AP Speed Paint is a great option for armies. Unless I missed it somewhere, I would love to have seen AP create an expansion set for 1.0 owners that includes only the new colors.
I could listen to Brent and watch him paint minis all day. Well done!
Good on you for talking to the paint companies, and good on Army Painter for listening!
New to the hobby and I found your channel and can’t stop binge watching your videos. Thank you for the many excellent advice, it has helped tremendously. New fan here ✋
hey thanks for watchin, bigboss! I hope you're having fun painting :-)
Most artist brands already have the pigments on each paint as publicly available information, and Scale75 is doing it too, it's so important when you're mixing paints to know which pigments you're actually mixing, and it sucks that miniature painting companies keep that information secret.
I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reasoning is that facilitating that information would make it easier to paint with a small range of paints since you could mix them a lot easier, and they make a lot of money from having huge ranges with dozens or hundreds of colors, so they would rather not make it easier for people to make more colors from less paints
I'm right there with ya. We should hold hobby companies up to the same standards as art companies
As a colorblind myself, thanks for sharing your feedback to army painter to add the color description. Helps a ton
Thank you. I'm glad you are friendly with those great Greek guys at Parabellum. I love my City States minotaurs, and cannot wait for the satyr slingers for light ranged units.
Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love painting a regular metallic undercoat and then going over it with a speed paint + a little extra speed paint medium to let the shine come through more. The effect is so good!
yup yup! the quick red and green tests I did today came out a bit matt, but extra medium should help shine 'em up :-)
I do def agree with the naming. The absolute best thing you can do with these colors is to take a small, thick papered notebook and paint a labeled line of each in it, thick to thin. One drop a bottle is adequate and you'll never look at a bottle again and go "what color was that again??" Great way to prevent waste
a notebook is a fantastic idea :-)
I will say one word when it comes to those sampler boxes for those who don't think they are great for gamers. Frostgrave!
omg, as a colorblind mini painter, thank you for advocating for the color descriptions!
absolutely! descriptive names are useful to all of us :-)
I really appreciate Goobertown reviews. I never feel like they're biased. They're super informative and filled with useful tips.
That was fun! You are actually a compelling lore master ;)! Sampler boxes sound temptingly sweet. And well done on getting paint descriptions updated!!!
Army painter ad on the army painter video 🎉🎉
hahaha, computers these days...
From what I heared from guys at LFGS big Conquest is now played without 'loose' models. You stick in the models to tray and make signle diorama of it .. without removable models (unless you want to play First Blood skrimish). That helps a lot with Orks xD
yup yup, that's what I've heard too. Magnets are good call, only take the minis out for painting and for skirmish games :-)
Conquest definitely has some momentum, and deservers way more! This game is a blast and the minis are a joy to paint. Great video as usual Brent, and good to see ya at Adepticon!
heck yeah! :-)
Had to watch this bc I love your speedpaint videos. Now I need the new speedpaints AND Conquest minis. Thanks for enabling us! :D
you're welcome! have fun with your new conquest armies! :-)
Awesome video! I've been flip-flopping on Conquest for a while. Recently picked up an older 2 player starter box and while the game seems awesome, wasn't too impressed by that box. But I've seen some of the newer stuff in person and it looks amazing. Have the newest 2 player starter coming my way now...can't wait to get them to the painting table! Thanks for another cool vid Goob :)
Those legionnaires and ghosts looks awesome!
A sticky bun, a cup of coffee and a new video from Goobertown. 10/10 afternoon.
The added description of the color is awesome, but I also love the names of the colors.
Dude, loving your content! Your how stuff is made videos are really informative and I am here for it! If you make it to the Seattle open this year I'd love to say hi!
1. There's always a quality to quantity.
2. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough. And in engineering, good enough is damn close to perfect.
The two things I keep in mind for hordes and monsters. I keep seeing the errors or how things can be improved...but I have to stop myself because no one will care how awesome that one goblin is if the other twenty are grey plastic.
Also, nothing stops me from when they're varnish sealed going back and picking out highlights later at my leisure.
Another thing, with you and Dana's stuff I figured out how to mix the speed paints 1.0 with non speed paint mediums to where I can go in after and they act more like oil paints. I can get them blocked in, and then start fiddling with points to blend and highlight. It's literally like oil paints without the week long cure times. So weird at first but then it clicks.
I used Liquitex gloss and matte medium. I wish I could give ratios but you just have to get a feel for it per paint.
Yup yup! it's nice having things done rather than not-done :-) It's a useful tool in the right situations
I've been using the One Happy Choice brushes as well and they have been working okay for me.
yup, they're OK enough! :-)
Nice video Brent! You have perfected your drybrushing and slap chop technique! 👏🖌
Really liked seeing this line get a brighter paint job. The standard dark and dirty looks great, but your guys make the game seem much more accessible. Now to track down the new starter set in the UK... :(
listening to feedback is my nr1 fav thing in people/companies/aliens etc. time to give army painter a shot once the new labels are out
Can we please get a full video on your drybrushing/value sketching technique? Your volume is divine!
I sort of attempted this a few months ago... but I've gotten better at drybrushing since then... th-cam.com/video/gT2JV3Ks41g/w-d-xo.html
Adding numbers as time adds FACTS, not just opinions. Very workable.
clocks are handy! :-)
Just got my first speed paints. Really enjoyed painting with them and as a beginner it makes it a lot of fun.
nice! :-) keep on having fun
i love speed paint 2.0s. they are really inspired me to get back into the hobby.
Thank you
Armay Painter deserves more popularity 👍
I did the same mistake with a speedpaint and it exploding on me. As a result, I have dozens of models with bright green details that were intended to be another colour originally :')
ooof... well... live and learn... :-)
Thanks for the tip on the One Happy Choice brushes. Seeing these paints on the minis has me curious about both the paints and the game.
hehehe, there's nothing special about those brushes, but they are cheap!! Have fun paintin :-)
Yay!
So good to see someone going for the three-stage undercoat before applying speedpaints- I'm a terrible painter, having returned to the hobby relatively recently after a lonnnnnnnng break, but I'm actually very proud of what I can achieve with comparatively little time, skill and effort!
Also, I can use the models on the tabletop without even applying the speedpaint, because I can claim I'm using a stylised monochrome palette 😂
Those are some of the best minotaurs I've seen. I think I would be quite selective in which Conquest minis I'd buy, to get stuff that fits with my collection of 28mm stuff. I'd go mostly with whatever works as either statues or extra-large creatures, like different types of half-giants or various monstrous humanoids. The more I see the Speedpaints in action, the more I want to try this as a time-saver, because I want to make my Pile smaller.
I liked their skin tone set and really glad to see colors other than Rickets Pale and I'd have a Dermatologist Look at That Brown added to the speed paint line
16:32 That T-rex looks sooooo good! 🤩
right?? :-)
I put speed paint over metalics to colour them as well, lately I have been experimenting with gunmetal with highlights/drybrushing of silvers.
oh yeah, that sounds great! :-)
Watching the capillary action of the overloaded green on the Dwarf shield was so satisfying.
Great video. Thank you! I'm excited to try the speed paints out. The figures themselves are wonderful looking and I have got a penchant for the big ones myself.
I think the note on the speed paints being challenging to correct at times with mistakes is a good one for me getting started. Not to be scared of screwing up ("There are no mistakes, only happy accidents," thank you Bob Ross) but paint with mindful intention.
Take it slow and enjoy washing the dishes so-to-speak.
Thank you for all the time in putting this together. Such a huge help to see the paint in action.
paint with mindful intention, that's the spirit! :-)
Man, the conquest minis are really cool. I just wish they weren’t so large. I am not a fan of the larger scale, since I use minis for multiple games. This kind of locks them into their own game
This was my hangup with it. FLGS made a huge push for the game, with massive discounts, and lots of variety ordered in. But I couldn't do it. The scale is so bizarre a choice that the models would be just about useless for anything OTHER than Conquest!
They are some lovely vibrant paints. Perfect for this new box of Squigs I just gots... hmm.
Love the new camera angle, you handsome bastard.
As a monochromatic colourblind painter, descriptive labels are a great idea, thank you!
I think they'll be useful to all of us :-)
Really impressive results Brent! You're an inspiration!
I love that you've started painting Conquest! And I hope Goobertown Roulette comes back (or just more painting videos)
Love your videos! Always happy to see a new one.
Hello.
Thank you for this great and super interesting video. Really exciting to get these insights behind the scenes.
And also a big thank you to Army painter for making this informative video possible. The Army painter team makes a very nice, young and committed impression. It looks like they really enjoy their work.
Great company!
Greetings from Germany
Speedpaints over a metal undercoat are great. You can also scratch it off with a pin afterwards to get some good battle scars.
heck yeah! :-)
Thanks for the video Brent. It was interesting to hear more thoughts on the Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0. I agree that they are basically slapchop juice, which is great for getting armies painted fast. The models look nice too. I agree that the older models have not aged well, but the new editions do look really nice and I might be picking up one of those sample kits.
Saw you in the Adepticon dealer hall but didn't want to interrupt your conversation. So excited to see Speedpaint 2.0, can't wait to get my own set.
Yay ! Another video from Brent ? And in OtherGamesApril ?? What a day !!! :D
As always, thanks for your great content and chilly attitude Brent ;)
Also : can someone give a hint on the first music used ? I LOVE it !
I just searched "medieval" and "bard" you'll find tons of that kind of stuff :-)
Saw this video earlier, but I had to wait until I could give it my full attention!
Yesssss! Finally get to see the pro use hopefully what is my next paint set!
I do prefer quality over quantity.
That said, if you buy a game and wanna bring its Minis to the table quickly, this is a great start to do so.
You can always come back later and add highlights and stuff.
We’ll done on the descriptive labels, makes a big difference to me as a somewhat colour-blind painter.
I got one of the original starter boxes for conquest, and I got really turned off by some of the old models. I'm really glad their stuff got better! I'm excited to pick up a new kit of two and check it out.
I understand! The militia were one of the first kits that I assembled... ooof. I'm glad that I kept going 🙂
@@GoobertownHobbies The first unit that I assembled was the Man-at-Arms and oof indeed. I eventually turned some of them into bronze statues for my D&D games. And the sculpts look great as statues.
@@Ulrican414 interestingly, the mounted knights aren't too bad! (Relatively)
@@GoobertownHobbies Yes! I agree. The knights were actually pretty nice. The alien spire creatures were also pretty cool.
Love the hard earned tip about holding the bottle on an angle
live and learn :-)
Now we just have to get you to play with those amazing conquest minis
Oooh, those sampler boxes are so smart! How does hardly anybody do this?! >~<
also, massive props to you and TAP for the addition of paint descriptions, that's invaluable.
Happy Choice brushes for the win in my house! Great video as always. The new colors look great. Can't wait for my 2.0 mega set later this month.
OHHH Goobertown imposters! Points for creativity I guess.
You will be glad to know the new labels say 2.0 and have the color explanation at the bottom! I've seen the new batches from other youtubers.
Companies actually taking constructive criticism is not something I'm used to. I'm really glad they do because I'm definitely gonna save up to get that mega 2.0 set!
Hullo Brent! Excellent video, Your content is superior as ever! I hope more companies do use pigment numbers and names. I remember going to my local hobby shop and passing on paints he had for sale, as I could not determine what colors they really were! I will not bother buying a paint if it does not have pigment information. Wonderful mini paintings Brent. Thanks for showing us in an entertaining way and exhibiting superior techniques too! Please take care and have yourself a wonderful afternoon or evening as the case may be!
right on! we'll get 'em to put the pigments on the bottles, one of these days, one of these days.... hope you're having a good one! :-)
Dude! Brent! Its Robbie! My kids are obsessed with warhammer and just started getting into it! I gotta show them your series.
hahaha, hey Rob! long time no see :-) When I moved in 7th grade the lads in Fort were into SWCCG, WWE, and Goldeneye. The kids in the new town were Goldeneye + Warhammer, so that's when I made the switch. I'm back in the Portland area these days, let me know if you're ever around!
I just spent the last 2 days looking at Conquest models. Thanks for the timely video drop! I'm not a war gamer so I was curious about the usability of some of these models for TTRPGs. I love their giants and Minotaur but I'm still unsure of the scale.
I'd say they're close to GW's scale. Some models on foot can reach Primaris marine size.
Humans are a bit big, but for monsters and stuff that doesn't matter too much. standard base sizes are 25mm for conquest infantry, 50mm diameter for monsters like minotaurs, and the giant is 100mm base diameter.
Welcome back! Hope your holidays or as lovely as your paint jobs. Conquest is something I'd love to get into but there is no demand for it in my tiny City😢
ahhh, you must paint two armies and share with friends! ;-)
Great video as always. very cozy. I think you might be situated slightly behind me and to my left this episode, though. I'm not sure that is intentional.
not intentional... hmm... maybe I accidentally hit a slider at some point in editing... also maybe I need to get my ears checked! thanks for noticing ;-)
I dont usually bother with game minis living a rural area... but i might have to pick up some of those dwarves when i can get a hobby station put together again
THANK YOU for suggesting to print descriptions on the bottles! I am actually colour blind and I always have to ask my wife about the colours 😅. I can see colours, but I see them much less intensively.
I hope this'll help! The industry naming everything off of imaginary creatures has been taken a bit too far :-)
New Goobertown video? Today's gonna be a good day. :)
I saw another youtube who slapchopped the bottle caps before painting them, to make it easier to see what they looked like dried and such.
i saw that too. It's a great idea, but a lot of work.... and you need to be careful not to mix up the caps ;-)
