Saving a piece of interesting furniture is a fantastic skill to have, but saving history is immeasurable. You have saved an integral part of Estonias history with this piece and it will now remain to tell its story to younger generations. I am so sorry that your country suffered at the hands of invaders. You were not alone but it altered lives in desperate ways. The whole world suffered at that time, all because of a few men’s greed for power. I was really glad to hear Mr Soone returned to his roots at last, but I’m sure with lasting effects. I hope that this never happens again to your country and people, and I pray every day that peace in Europe will happen very soon. Your skills are amazing and you should be very proud that you have saved a piece of your country’s heritage. God bless, from the UK xx
Ahti, that's magnificent. Restoring antiques always helps preserve the past, but you just restored history. A beautiful piece of furniture with such a sad past. I'm glad Mr. Soone was able to come home. Thank you for the entertainment and fun of watching you give new life to old items, but I also thank you for the education.❤
Gorgeous. And being the nut I am, that base having hollow sections could come in handy with a few small modifications. What a work of art and usefulness those desks are. We need to bring back real cabinetry.
You do an amazing job on all of your restorations! Your vlog is my personal favorite for exploring vintage furniture restoration. The back story, of the vintage pieces , that you share with us during each restoration enhances the beauty and value of each piece. ❣️
Fantastic job, as always, Ahti. Love the colour change from that dark and dirty to the the final finish. Whilst were used to seeing you preserve old pieces, it's great to hear the associated story with this one. I'm glad Soone came back alive, unlike so many. Thank you.
Very hapi that u majaged to find a mistake don2 by someone. Supposingly made your day eh. It seems an unholy quest for someones to keep on looking for others mistakes and make a mark by commenting thosethen. Mutta apina mikä apina tai LollipeaBuratino😂
Yes, I too am pleased Mrs. Soone returned home after such a dreadful experience. That desk is wonderful antique restored beautifully, especially with the history.
Mooie restauratie. Fijn om te lezen dat Herman terug kon komen naar Estland en een goed leven heeft gehad. Leuk dat je deze achtergronden over de meubels deelt met ons.
I like learning about history through your fourniture restoration video. Objects tell their own story and this one has witness a lot. I don't know if you did this on purpose, but carrying the cross on your shoulder was a beautiful wink to all the victims of communism. Thank you :)
I'm always impressed by your craftsmanship and attention to detail. This desk is a historical treasure. Thank you for sharing the story behind it! Can't wait to see your next project! Cheers from Virginia, USA!
I agree, it’s completely wonderful! I have an old Oak top I want to refinish and I’m hoping you can let me know how long to cure the turpentine/linseed oil layer before applying the shellac? Assuming a few days, but I’m not a master craftsman! Thanks so much?😁
Beautiful job saving that amazing desk. Thank you sharing that piece of history, it's not something most people in the US know. The desk is stunning with an understated elegance. Masterful job restoring it.
Just when I thought I couldn't be more impressed with your talents and skills, you did THIS! Ahti, you're the best! Your attention to detail and the history of the piece is incomparable. Thank you for doing what you do better than anyone else.
Beautiful Restoration of an Important Historical Piece, Meeting a New Friend with New Skills and a Reenactment of Jesus Carrying the Cross! What More Could You ask for? Always Great to see You Sir!
You never cease to amaze me, Ahti. This restoration came out wonderful! Thank you for the history lesson as well. I am so glad Mr. Soone made it back alive as well. Great job!
I could not even imagine that immaculate result. It is a great pleasure to see this wonderful furniture being renewed and conservated for the next 100 years. This is real conservation art and an hommage to those, who built this desk 100 years ago. Congratulations to you, Mr. Ahti and greetings from the western part of the Baltic Sea.
Such remarkable artistry, honoring process, materials, and the original craftsman who created this object. All done with extraordinary knowledge, and love.
What a privilege, I imagine, to be the craftsman that you are and to have the honor or restoring such an historic piece. Also I’m not sure if you were alluding to carrying the base of the desk on your back the way Jesus carried the cross on His back, but if you were than I totally agree that we all have our cross to bare. I absolutely love your content sir. You are fantastic in your skills. Much respect from South Carolina 🇺🇸❤️
This is, hands down, the best piece you have ever shown, with real presence and fascinating construction. I hope the new owner is pleased and lives up to it. The Estonian pieces are always the best designed.
Anti, you make more than restoration of the furniture. You restore the history. The real history of the real people. The history which someone wants to clean off our minds. You are awesome in restoration not only of the furniture but the history!
Absolutely beautiful work again truly inspiring. The history just completes it. Let’s pray history doesn’t repeat itself. Prayers , thoughts and love to you, your family and countrymen. ✊
A beautiful piece of furniture, restored with enormous skill and sympathy by two outstanding craftsmen. Many thanks to Ahti and Rain. The historical notes are fascinating. 14.45, from the poem 'Cold Iron' by Rudyard Kipling. It is, as with much of Kipling's poetry, intensely moving. The final line reads, 'Iron out of Calvary is master of men all'. Old joke: 'Do you enjoy Kipling?' 'I don't know. I've never kippled'.
That is absolutely beautiful work. A gorgeous piece of history restored to its original luster. You are a master of every craft you show on your channel whether it's upholstering or your formidable woodwork and a very accomplished videomaker. Quality over quantity makes it every time a delight when the notification bell column pops up your logo. Thank you
What a wonderful job and thank you for the history lesson. I love learning things from your restorations and I look forward to your videos every month ❤
Ahti- watching you work is like watching an artist paint. More than likely I will never restore furniture, or ever be able to afford anything worth restoring, but watching your videos brings me great joy. Thank you for sharing your talent and artistry with all of us. This desk is just gorgeous.
What a wonderful piece of history! I always love your work, but hearing anything about Estonia always makes me giddy! Wonderful restoration and thanks so much for sharing! ❤ 🇪🇪
I think Vickie Bligh said it beautifully n I have to agree with her a 100%. I’m amazed at how you made the handle also your friend Rain in helping to make the ring. It’s a beautiful piece with wonderful history. Thank Ahti for giving some tips on doing oak wood as I love oak n apparently I’ve been doing it wrong when restoring it. (But mine turned out okay). I even wrote it down for future reference. ♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟🌟
It’s a beautiful desk and it’s always a pleasure to watch Master Craftsmen at work. I really enjoyed the historical background on this piece. Well done!!
Always look forward to you popping up in my feed. That is a really interesting and beautiful desk. You did a wonderful job restoring it as always. Bravo.
Happy that you let the colour of the oak speak for itself, and it's lovely to not only see a wonderful piece of furniture restored but the history that it represents. And thanks for the advice on the best way to refinish an oak veneer - I have a table with much the same problem as this one had, will definitely be giving it a go!
I can’t wait for each and every restoration as I know they are executed with sensitivity and attention to detail! You never disappoint! I also love the bits of history you impart on each piece. This was another sensation restoration! Cheers from Australia.🤗🇦🇺
i watch a lot of videos of abandoned villas, palaces, chateaus and castles. There are numerous antique furniture pieces in those videos, longing for someone to restore them. The only person that comes to my mind is you!! I really really wish you could restore those treasures from 18th and 19th century lying and waiting for a savior like you..!
Gorgeous restoration! Absolutely fabulous. Knowing the history is such an additional treat. Maybe someone can put a written piece of paper in the desk for people’s edification. Carol from California
Old workmanship & excellent grade of materials makes for longevity and lasting beauty. They don't do things like that these days. It needs to come back and be the standard again.
WHAT a masterful restoration, Ahti. That is a gorgeous piece of Estonian history. I thought the top of the desk was a no go and that you'd need to replace the veneer, but nooooo, you restored it to such a silky smooth finish. Thank you for the recipe to use on oak. I will save it. The metal work, along with the laser work was a welcome addition to your capabilities. Very interesting to watch the blacksmith do his work, and you with the brass.
What beautiful wood grain in that desk… I love the carving in it too… even though it’s very subtle… it gives it interest… nice job to both of you… in making the ring pull… beautiful job Congratulations on it…!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What a beautiful desk and you the Master have restored it to original glory. It is always nice to hear the story behind the piece and possibly the person it belonged to. Hopefully Herman Soones family is the one who still owns this desk. Have a terrific day
16:51 Finally! I can teach the master a new trick! When filing thin stock like that, to mitigate the horrible sound, clamp a heavy pair of locking pliers (commonly called vise-grips) on the edge of the work piece. You may have to re-position them a few times to find the right spot, but when you get it right, it dampens the vibration and cuts that terrible noise down a great deal.
I really like your beautiful restoration videos with the history of the object. You bring these pieces of furniture to life with your skillful restoration and the stories of their origins and their owners, plus sometimes there are stories of what violence befell them. The chair with shrapnel was very interesting, too. You provide entertainment and history.
So much more handsome finished in the honeyed color rather than the antique cherry or mahogany it had in the beginning. It even enhanced the beautiful carving. I'm glad Mr Soone came back home and lived a happy life. I enjoyed watching, thank you!
Yay! A new video from AT Restoration!! This desk is absolutely gorgeous, and you did an amazing job on the restoration as always. Those carved details ❤❤❤
watching this piece of history come back to life was such a pleasure. What a unique shape and form! I feel one needs a very large room to put a desk like this in, or else it will loom over all the other furniture. I absolutely adore all those carved flourishes that are hiding as if they're shy. Thank you for sharing this video and for the historical context!!
Wow, I waited so much for this video and I felt happy to see the result of this restoration. Fabulous! It's great to see you, it's great to follow your amazing work!!! 👏👏👏🌹
That looks absolutely beautiful and it has so much history. You’ve done an amazing job of restoring Mr Soone’s desk. I’m sure he’d be really happy to see it looking so good. I’m glad he was able to return to his life in Estonia, back to his home ❤🏴
I’d never seen a base like that for a desk. It’s a most unique piece and in a really good way. The understated elegance of the carving perfectly softens the chunky designs of that era.
My heart always skips a beat when a new AT Restoration video pops up in my feed.😅
I feel the same way ♥️😊👍
Ahti is the BEST
Same here🎉🎉
Yup me too !
