I hope the owner puts the original fabric into a glass frame. I 've recently been to an antique fabric and carpet exhibition. Even fragments nicely presented are pleasant to look at.
You have skill and knowledge that is dying out in the modern world. Your restoration and upholstery is of a very high standard. What a pleasure to have watched your video I enjoyed every moment. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Heck, I was holding my breath while you applied the gold leaf! That stuff is so fragile: a person my husband built a house for wanted gold leaf applied in a skylight dome. The exercise in putting the gold leaf on in that application would make your hair fall out. I can't imagine doing something like this! The old upholstery looked like it was silk. Such a fragile looking piece, but your firm handling was just right. An absolutely absorbing video: I always look forward to you videos and learn so much. Thank You!
The upholstery and gold leaf would have turned me away from such a project. Quite the skills you have developed in this modern world of paint and memory foam. Beautiful work!!
I missed this when the competition actually happened because my husband was very ill, so my vote doesn't count now, but another amazing transformation from our quiet friend. Bravo. 😊🇨🇦
@@brassbunnies Agree, that let the whole (otherwise amazing) restoration a bit down for me. I was expecting he would use some fabric similar to the original one, which made the chair look like it was all golden. I think that was the original maker's idea actually. The green velvet is nice, but with it the chair looks more common and cheaper.
@@dinovolla9999he mentioned that the client paid for it, so perhaps it was the client's choice as well. I for one liked it, it seems befitting to the majestic nature of the chair , especially with the gold.
The historical accuracy of your work is again, the best I've seen on TH-cam and an example of true restoration. A video like this should be required viewing for upcoming content creators. Fantastic job, and best of luck with the competition!
I mean, obviously he was not trying to do a historically accurate repair, just trying to get the chair stable and looking more or less historically accurate. And he was doing the work for free. So I can see using staples rather than tacks, as they are faster and hold about as well. (Maybe? They probably rust faster, and possibly cut through the fabric in time?) Now, the hot glue most casual crafters might use would probably not hold up over time, and that trim might peel off fairly easily. But there are lots of different formulations of hot glue, and some are very durable, though I don’t know if they would be considered “archival”. Certainly hot glue sticks like that would not be historically accurate. But, he did achieve the goal of restoring the chair to working order and making it beautiful.
I was used guilt leaf in an art class. Not gold, not a large project (might have been a picture frame) and my hands were still shaking at the cost. This restoration was masterwork.
Кропотливый труд с сусальным золотом! Терпение и профессионализм в работе налицо! На такой стул из дворца садиться страшно! А ведь О.Бендер их когда-то не жалел.
It never ceases to amaze me on how someone will do a sloppy job in restoring an antique piece of furniture. This is one of the main reasons i watch the channels that i do. You guys know what you're doing and do it well because you take the time to learn the proper techniques. If my grandmother was alive still she would have enjoyed this video immensely! The reason for that is because she started doing upholstery as her way of paying the bills. when i was born i spent so much time at her house just sitting there watching her work in fascination. It is an amazing thing to see! I just wish she was able to see you work. She passed just shy of her 101st birthday. God rest her soul. She did this work for just over 80 years before she stopped. This chair turned out absolutely stunning. I hope it goes home with someone who takes special good care of her.
One reason some restoration is not truly a restoration is because it is very expensive. I ask my customer, do you want it restored, or do you want it reupholstered only. The cost difference can be thousands of dollars.

Truly a master at these restorations. I saw this kind of chair in Catherine the Great’s Summer Palace near St Petersburg. I hope you win. Personally I’d have liked to see the upholstery done in silk, but the velvet is beautiful. 👏👏
What a beautiful result for a delightful chair design! Your skill level suits the original design. May I ask the type of wood it was made from? It's a delicate-looking chair, but such a deceptively strong design! Your excellent skills lead to the beautiful results. I especially like how you created a polisher for the legs with a drill! Brilliant! My only disappointment: I wish you could have used a fabric similar to the original silk, which, in my humble opinion, suits the delicacy of the chair. I love how the old materials are ecologically friendly, just requiring a much more skilled artist. Thank you for sharing.
I agree. The (silk) dark green velvet seemed a bit to heavy for such an elegant design. I would have preferred a soft coloured floral silk. But otherwise a true triumph! ❤

I love your videos. I also watch Transcend Furniture Gallery. It's great that you are all connected internationally. In my opinion, this is what the internet was supposed to be about. You each make appealing videos for different niches. Excellent job with this one.
That turned out very well. This job such last for centuries. Because that chair is so fine and delicate no one dare sit on it. Everything must be expensive in Russia, there is a youtuber called Bland Design in London, that uses gold leaf all the time. Entire ceilings and walls, and the price doesn't seem to affect him to much. To think Czar Nicholas II may have sat or been in the same room as this chair is and survived the Russian Revolution is mind boggling. One question, as many staples and nails as you use, wouldn't that have tendency to split the wood frame?
I mostly use staples because they damage wood less than nails. Seems that Bland Design uses fake gold. You can't put real gold leaf on the material with your fingers, like he is doing.

Jayzuz Mary n’ joseff!!! I forgot to breathe during the gold-leafing!!! What a job!!! I have considered trying this, but this has convinced me…NOPE!! 😂❤😍😱
Lovely restoration, thank you. A stunning chair in a league of its own in the challenge. As beautiful as the velvet is, I would have loved to see it done with a replacement silk tapestry as the velvet just feels a little heavy for such a chair. Greetings from Perth, Western Australia.
I could watch gold leaf application all day. It is fascinating. And I wasn’t sure for a few seconds about the green fabric but it quickly became clear how elegant the green and gold looked together. Beautiful restoration

Рад посмотреть на работу мастера
Traditional upholstery materials and methods inspire me. The beauty of your work brought this old chair back to splendor. Truly exciting. Thank you.
Breathless handcraftmanship, I had been working in Louvre and Versailles as tour guide for years and your chair is rare within the chairs in there. Thank you.
Jayzuz Mary n’ joseff!!! I forgot to breathe during the gold-leafing!!! What a job!!! I have considered trying this, but this has convinced me…NOPE!! 😂❤😍😱
Wow! The chair went from rags to riches! Phenomenal transformation! It's exquisite now!
Lavoro di una bellezza superba.Eccezionale!!!Bravissimo!!!
Wow. That is some over-the-top chair. But that was the Russian aristicracy! It is beautiful.
