      Andrew - I didn't take it as an attack at all and genuinely appreciate your feedback. It's a legitimate question - WHY would someone watch this? I ask myself that all the time and it's something I struggle with. It's pretty challenging to make this kind of video when there are two other people documenting the same thing. Almost all my shots had talking in the background explaining gear etc. If you compare that to the trip I did with Durston on Rockwall it was much easier - I just asked questions and pointed the camera at him - much more organic. Imagine if he had be filming himself at the same time, it would have been weird 🤣. When there are multiple people with cameras I tend to let them do their thing, especially since Marty was coming out here by plane and it was a new experience for him. I can drive out to the mountains tomorrow if I want! I just need to refill my brownie points jar...

    That's beautiful! Those dark mornings look rough though.
    19:20 is a great shot, looks magic in that light with the tent, skis, trees, mountains, and steam rising from the hot water.
    If strong winds at night were forecast (in winter), would you still use the Durston tent?

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha an I'm not a morning person... definitely rough getting up when it's still dark and cold. I'd still use the X-mid if there was wind in the forecast. With that much snow I'd just dig down instead of packing the snow and have a nice big wall around me. Also, it's the only tent I have right now.

    My SUL solo tent is a Tarptent NOTCH Li (Dyneema). My usual winter tent is a sylnylon Tarptent Moment DW. Both are double wall which I prefer for winter. My winter cook stove is a MSR Whisperlite Universal in white gas mode. I use a double wall ("gsssifier") titanium sheet Caldera Cone wood stove for melting snow. Thismeans less fuel to carry.

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fires aren't a reliable option where we are - the rules are very murky. Even if there were 100% permitted all the dead & down wood is under at least 3-4 ft of snow.

    Would you be able to do this trip with a pulk or is there enough steep terrain to make that a bad idea? I have used a home made pulk and like that I don't sink as much but I've only used one on pretty tame terrain. I do like that I can bring a little extra gear for comfort with a pulk which is very nice in those conditions.

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ouff I don't know... we did 10 km on a side slope down the Pharaoh Creek drainage which would have been miserable with a pulk. It would also mean that you couldn't get the advantage of skis on the downhill. Pulks are mostly used on long flat routes and when the load is excessively heavy - over 60 or 70 pounds total. My base weight was 25 pounds plus 7lbs of food, 2 lbs of fuel, typically 1 lbs of water. 35 lbs total is quite manageable.

      We followed some nice wolf tracks for a while on the last day. Most of the big ungulates are down in the big valleys during the winter. Lots of snowshoe hare tracks where we were and some smaller predator tracks, probably bobcat.

      You have the Pro 2P+? That mod would take some scissors… not sure you want to do that. This is the silpoly double wall version. The inner is just held by clips, easy to remove.

    Epic trip, curious, do you sleep in your ski boots? how do you keep them warm for the next day?

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I sleep in warm socks - I was using the TR Polar Ranger which has a double layer of down in the footbox. For the ski boots I don't do anything fancy, I use plastic bags as VB liners but they always shift and/or rip. Guessing they reduce the moisture in my boots a bit. The liners in those boots are essentially neoprene so they don't seem to absorb moisture. The outside material does a little but it's not an issue. I wear down hut boots in the morning until I'm ready to go, then get the ski boots on right before hitting the trail. They warm up fast.

      It’s a trip report from a real trip. I don’t pre-plan dramatic events or over emphasize things that are normal to me. I don’t get phased if it’s cold, dark, raining or whatever. I post trip reports partly to add authenticity to my other videos that talk about gear and techniques, and partly to experiment with what might be interesting. I guess I’m not there yet. It’s very hard to do something that is challenging and document it at the same time, especially in deep snow.

    • @KaneDoesOutdoors
      @KaneDoesOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Everything is hard in the snow. It’s more than waist deep so almost impossible to go out of your way to get better shots etc, especially with the itinerary we had. I understand Andrew’s comment but also find a lot of content on YT exaggerated and overly dramatic. Still trying to figure out what works for me, in the context of trips that I want to do. I don’t do trips because it will make a good video, I do things to challenge myself.
