My father told me that when I was a few years old, he lost his job in the 80s during the recession. It was Christmas time and he didn't have enough money to buy any gifts for the family, let alone enough food. Barely able to pay the rent. He was so ashamed of himself that he went to church and confessed to the priest that he was failing as a father and provider for his family. The priest heard him, reached into his pocket and gave him $40 and said, "Go get your baby a gift and hold your head up high for you are a great man."

While I don’t fancy the catholic church and the darkness it’s covered up, their philosophers are pretty articulate. I wish more people in the churches could reason and play devil’s advocate without getting flustered or troubled - those who do evidence the weakness of their faith or the understanding therein.

I love Bishop Barron’s dog analogies. He once explained suffering like a dog being taken to the vet for a shot. You can try to explain why he needs a shot, but a dog will never understand why the person he loves the most is letting this happen to him. Lightbulb moment for me.

    • @gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
      @gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife ปีที่แล้ว +1

Deep statement. We just took our dog in for a paw surgery. Being an active breed, cattle dog, she had to be reduced to laying around, only short walk in the backyard to use the bathroom, and back in. Wrapped the pad, changing it all the time, etc. you are absolutely right they don’t understand but I feel they trust you in a way and know you aren’t trying to hurt them. Just like we trust God during suffering moments. My wife often feels as if God abandons us in hard times. It’s interesting how in the Bible, it’s often the woman who doubts a bit more. I wonder why this is? I need to think about this more. Maybe it’s the job of a man to take on the burden more for the family. Not sure. I know JP talks a lot that women have more neuroticism as a personality trait because of protecting infants and they have to be awake to threat and danger. That could be where some more doubt comes from.
Have a nice weekend, my dog is looking at me now and she wants to go for a walk and play. Heaven for both of us, in a way. Lost in the moment. I’m also a bird photographer so that’s where everything else falls away when I’m out in nature, heaven in a sense.

What the bishop said about Dante's image of Satan being a perfect metaphor for pride also ties in with what I've heard from people who've escaped familial/sexual relationships with malignant narcissists (who are the epitome of incurvatus in se):
All their charm, intelligence and potential for good being ruined through self-obsession (Lucifer was one of the greatest angels until his Fall)
Self-pitying about their self-inflicted situation (Satan weeping)
Furiously struggling to escape from their misery using tactics that just keep them there (Satan's wing beats generating the winds that freeze his tears and trap him deeper in the frozen lake)
Trying to get some temporary relief from their frustration by inflicting agony on those around them, sometimes not even fully consciously, more like a person squeezing a stress ball (Satan biting down on the three traitors and flaying Judas' back by digging in his claws)
Completely unable to communicate in any restorative or meaningful way (plenty of people around in the deepest circle, but all of them frozen and unable to talk, while Satan can only hear the screams of his victims and shows none of the persuasive, tempting charm that Milton would give him in Paradise Lost)
Utterly terrifying if you're in their power but pitiful when looked at from a distance (Satan's a giant monster torturing people, but Dante and Virgil can simply leave him behind)
It's such a perfect metaphor that I wonder if Dante had encountered such a person in his life, and realised that this person was as close a model for Satan as he was ever likely to find.

@@legionreaver Thank you so much for your reply!
I’ve been thinking about it over the last few days and I must say they correlate with other observations I’ve made.
For example, I think it makes sense, to a degree, that certain groups essentially destroy their own credibility with self-aware-less and contradictory policies and actions towards people who don't immediately align or affirm them (tolerate everyone except the people they don't like, or against body-shaming except with people they don't align with, etc.).

Not that I agree with it/them, but I remember seeing something like 60+ percent of LGBTQ+ identifying people were raised in some religious setting, predominately being Judeo-Christian, through their childhood. Many faced social rejection and exclusion, as well as possible bullying for being “different.”
Most of the Pride identity is arranged as a “raging against” rather than a “going towards” something idealistic or utopian. A way to say, “You couldn’t break me; now WE will show you we are strong.”
Prideful people in my experience are also hurt people that use this pride to make up for or protect the innocent or vulnerable parts of their sense of self.
It’s basically like an armor that “Protects” them and their self-image (or gives the illusion of protection, really), but often this armor isn’t broken-down or updated when they leave the setting or context it was developed in or are presented with new information about the world. Think of a lobster that has outgrown its shell but won’t let go of it when the time comes to molt.
In so many words, “every else is at fault” but the person holding onto their shell, so to speak.
Book A sounds like Fundamental Attribution Error, which is like doing something and justifying your reason, but not giving that same nuance or grace to another. Think driving crazy but justifying it with “well, I have to get to work because I am a good employee and person” vs. seeing someone else do the same and attributing it to “they’re just insane! They’re a bad driver and a trash person.”
Not exactly the same, but akin to the idea, so to speak.
I’d be interested in checking it out, so thank you, friend!
      Also, Interesting framework.
I’d like to share my take on the anatomy of the mind/soul.
Often I think the ego gets a bad rap, and while it’s understandable why that is, I think it’s moreso an issue of balance.
Rather than characterizing our soul/mind as a struggle between ego and impulse, I think it's more of a need for balance between our virtues and ego. This is a horizontal scale with awareness and humility on the left, and ego on the right.
Impulses and “higher” self - or the part that connects with The Creator (I prefer to call God) - makes up the vertical scale.
Picture Selfless/egoless transcendence on the upper left side, and selfish narcissism on the bottom right.
      IMO, The ratio that works best is 3-7: Ego/self-focus at a 3 and awareness/virtue at a 7.
The ego is useful for implementing the will, and the ego - in the right context - is no different than inflammation in the body. So long as it’s not chronic it’s important, useful, and necessary.
Impulses are what pull us down. That’s why we can go from egoless ‘awe’ while in church or at a concert or with friends we love to debased or ‘animalistic’ when we are alone or in conflict or believe we are in danger.
We can also exist in the upper right (ego + higher) which usually looks like self-righteousness or the lower left (awareness + impulse) which usually looks like self-deprecation and criticism, and can lead to maladaptive coping methods to “shut the voices up.”
Humility and Pride, or Awareness and Ego are like blood pressure: balance is good but usually better on the lower end.
And Awe - Impulse is like blood sugar: high or low isn't the problem, but when they hang out in either for too long you’re going to have trouble.
      Balance, essentially.

No need to go into how many times over the years people have wielded power in the name of Christ -- i.e. hypocrisy -- for no good. My point being is how can a "good" Christian overlook the many failings and still believe in "God"? And I’ve been self-absorbed lately in the sense of “what do I look like, what am I going to do with my life, am I dressed well today? In French, they are two very different words. The self-centered sin is 'Orgueuil' which has an unmistakenly negative connotation. It even has a slimy sound that invokes disgust while 'fièreté' always has a positive connotation usually meaning being proud of something accomplished.

Facts: the catholic (which simply means "universal") church is the earliest form of Christianity to ever exist. For 1500 years after Christ's death, Catholicism was the universal Christian faith in the West before there were any other offshoot denominations. The leadership of the church was established in a direct line from Christ and the first apostles... read the early church fathers if you don't believe me. Peter was the first pope, because he was appointed by Christ as "the rock [upon which] I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). And yes, all Christians - Catholics included - believe in baptism. That's why the Catholic sacrament of baptism exists. Where you get "freemasons" and "pagan roman doctrine", I don't know. Doctrine is all from the Bible and the great apostolic tradition of the past 2000 years, guided by the Holy Spirit.

In Islam, pride (arrogance) is one of the greatest sins. Actually arrogance is the source of other sins. Just like he told about Satan. Satan sinned and became the source of evil because of his arrogance. But in Islam , the biggest sin is " The Shirq". Shirq means putting yourself into the place of the God ; acting as you can judge like the god. Also shirq has a very big relation with the arrogance.

The lowest level of hell in Dante’s Inferno was reserved for treachery - not pride.
Having been there, I see Dante’s description more as a psychological metaphor of what the betrayed person is actually feeling. Cold, dark, frozen in ice and chewing yourself up (Satan gnawing on your soul). Dante thought it was poetic justice for the betrayer to be punished in this way because it’s how their victims feel.
That said, I do like the black hole analogy Barron used and it’s radiant alternative.

    • @starcode89
      @starcode89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well said. Dante's absolute lowest level of hell is reserved for the betrayers. While it can be argued that pride is identifiable as a common denominator among betrayers, it's only one component. Betrayal is the sum of many parts, pride included.

how does man follow the will of God if the will of man is perverse? The theologians say you cannot do this without having divine grace all the power to follow the will of God. How then do you get grace. Why is grace given to some and not to others? If I cannot follow the will of God by my own effort because my will is selfish, how will my will which is selfish be transformed into an unselfish will? If I cannot do it because I am already the selfish will, then Grace must do it. If Grace has not already done it, why not? Because I didn’t accept it. But by definition I have no power to accept it because my will was selfish..

What a shock to discover that I was not only a sinner but that I had no interest in obeying the instruction to, 'Go and sin no more.' or admitting that when I said, '..and I will not sin again..' I was telling lies. I knew this to be so because I kept turning up like clockwork on a Saturday at the Confession box. And I had the audacity, as an altar boy, to consider myself to be a, 'Humble servant of the Church.' Confession is a place for sins to be confessed, sorrow and determination to amend expressed and not a place for sinners to tell lies.
