@@DanMcKay Actually to be pedantic, Sonny was a member of the Post 1959/Post Holly Crickets. He never toured or anything like with Holly except when they recorded Ollie Vee in Nashville in 1956.

We had fewer other distractions. Music was it. No computer games, instagram etc. Maybe good, maybe not but music was a bigger deal back then.

I watched this video dozens of times and never get tired of it. So tragic about his young mysterious death. I strum a guitar and this is not an easy song to play. I can tell he was influence by Buddy Holly with his music. I also love the choreography of the dancing girls in the background with the fake revolvers and synchronized dance moves. Funny this was at a decade where the law was respected, what a huge change in society now.
You see the Buddy Holly influence because this song was written by Sony Curtis who played guitar for him at the Nashville sessions 👍

I love the Clash and they do a good version of this song. But it still is at its finest as a twangy guitar hard driving rockabilly song. Bobby Fuller Four does it best.

sarahstacy81 : It is interesting you should mention the Holly influence. Bobby imitated Buddy's strumming style of using both up strumming as well as down strumming. You can really hear the resemblance of the guitar sounds and quick chord changes they both used.
Those Texas boys did it.
The best have done remakes, even Buddy Holly tried and nobody even comes close to the Bobby Fuller 4! May he rest in eternal peace
The song was recorded by the Crickets, but it was written by Cricket Sonny Curtis in 1959 after Buddy Holly had died, and released in 1960. The lead vocalist copied Buddy's singing style.
There is no comparison between "The original Crickets,s" version and The Bobby Fuller 4. David Bailey and I agree!

He sure had "it". I think that had he begun five years earlier he would have been more in tune with the times. This was during the British invasion. He was popular at the time of his death. But imagine if this performance was in 1961? He would have been an utter sensation with time to grow and develop as the 60's progressed. I'm sure that he would have made movies like Bobby Darrin. What might have been.
