Class 70 (Colas Rail Freight)
As of July 2020, new YA50 Yodalarm is now fitted at this crossing which is very rare, and appears to have been set on a rather weird and unique tone setting. It sounds more like a fire alarm than the typical alarm sounds you hear at most of the UKs level crossings. It replaced a previously faulty alarm which I filmed in January 2020.
Seen in the video was one of two freight trains I filmed in the morning, both heading from Eastleigh East Yard to Epsom, carrying ballast.
Thanks For Watching!
I'm a firefighter and some of our stations actually use this sounder for the 'bells' when we get a shout.
Ah nice.
Now that is one strange alarm! I'd never have thought I'd ever hear an alarm making a noise like that at a crossing, and it'd certainly easily clear the crossing for a very fast train to thunder past, which they often do here! Brilliant catch of the class 70 too, and a fabulous video, filmed only a few hours before mine! 👍😁
Neither, I'm very surprised they've put this one in to replace the original faulty alarm. I also never expected it to sound so weird. I wouldn't be surprised if people were scared to stand anywhere near this crossing with that alarm going off haha 😂 And yeah, was good seeing a 70 as I haven't filmed one of them in ages
It will probably take a while for people to get use to it
Well I don't know if the sound is going to be changed or not. It might just be left as it is. It's an alarm and it's suppose to alert people anyway.
I know
This is a DIN Tone, it is usually used in fire alarms
Living in that nearby house must be a constant joy!!!
Yeah, even more with this new alarm installed 🥴
it's fine, someone just started a game of Galaxians. it'll get faster once they blast through the first row of aliens
Haha
And let me guess the faster one is another train coming
Nice! You’ve actually got some sort of German sounder on this one, I can recognise it as playing the “German fire tone” here too!
Yep, the DIN Tone
Wow, I was not expecting that alarm, I love the barriers though😄
Haha, yeah neither was I. Obviously a very strange setting the alarm was set to.
Ok I never knew that level crossings played space invaders 😂😂😂
The alarm sounds like you are at an arcade on a slot machine winning money
Sounds like aliens shooting laser guns
Sounds like some sort of exotic bird, like a penguin
It does
Bet all the birds in the trees are wondering what on earth that noise is lol
Unusual sweeping din tone. Noticed that they have it in the Dover port
It was very odd at the time. It only lasted a few months then got replaced with something more normal lol.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannelprobably for the best lol
Great video!
intresting sounding bell!
Thanks! 😁 Definitely. There's no other alarm that sounds similar to this in the UK currently
It sounds like a lockdown alarm
Given that the principle purpose of the audible alarm is to alert blind and partially sighted people of an active level crossing, they may not associate this new tone with the need to stop and wait for trains. Just a thought.
There’s probably is a tactile surface on the pavement to warn the blind/partially sighted.
If I had my eyes closed, I wouldn't have known if I was near a level crossing or in Megazone
Yeah, this alarm is very unusual
That alarm is strange but I like it better than the usual ones. Its a bit like a computer game lol
Uk what have you done but it actually sounds good but never beats the original
'Emergency alarm comms ences'
Wow that so cool
What the hell lol 🤣 sounds like a game of space invaders I guess
Yeah, a few people have said it sounds Sci-Fi lol
Lol
Strange alarm - I've defienlty heard one like that before. I may have heard it from some form of theme park railway crossing 😀👍
Well this is the first time I've heard it on a mainline level crossing in the UK. But you're right, I know some small crossings in some theme parks and zoos have alarms that are similar
Great video! 👍😁 I’ve never heard that alarm before in the UK
Thanks! 😁 I've never heard this alarm sound at any other crossing so far. Very interesting.
sounds like a laser blast lol
Yeah it does a bit lol
They installed a Yodalarm!!
Unfortunately so :(
Hmm, interesting alarm, almost like an ambulance alarm. But as far as I know, some crossings in Portugal have similar alarms like this.
Oh really? That's interesting. I thought crossings in Portugal mostly had bells
Wow! The sound the arm made when rising was quite loud. Odd but i found it fascinating to hear the loud ol gears. (Not sure they’re supposed to do that though)
Yeah these barriers are usually quite noisy.
You don't usually see that style of YODalarm on level crossings. Somebody probably messed up the tone switches when installing it, which is why it is doing reverse sweep instead of the standard hi-lo (alternating).
It appears to be a brand new YA50 they've installed, and I've never seen a brand new one of these installed before. No idea if this tone setting was intended or not, but you're right, it's definitely different from the typical Hi-Lo tones on all the other crossings.
Like I said in the UK Level Crossings & Trains Channel video, I don't really like this alarm. It doesn't belong to a level crossing for me.
Good little freight train, and good crossing otherwise :)
No it doesn't, considering what all the other crossing alarms in the UK sound like. Thanks 😊
I remember you said 😎
It's great what you can find behind level crossings! 👍🏻
I didn't know about this new alarm until Thursday. It's great to find interesting equipment or interesting crossings 👍
I like how the gate mechanism looks
Cool sound
I'm sure that's a fire alarm 😂😂😂😂
I like it, but I'd overlay a ding-ding-ding-ding bell sound.
Wow!! Very intersting alarm. The barriers also look a bit unusual in a way. 😂😂😁😁🚆🚆👍👍
The train was really cool!! 😁😁
Thank you! 😁 Yes it is a very weird alarm, definitely. I never expected it to sound like it did. The barriers are examples of the first automatic half barrier designed in the UK I believe. I'm not sure how old these barriers are however.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel No problem!! 😁😁
Yes the barriers look rather new comparing to your other videos!!
God, and I thought the electronic crossing bells we have over here in the United States were weird sounding!!!
I stand corrected. Great video! Great sounding locomotive too. Is that an EMD import from the US/Canada?
Thanks! 😎 It is a very weird alarm for the UK. Not heard anything like this at any other crossing. What do you mean by EMD import?
Nice video. Nice freight train or as it's known in the U.K. a goods train. I take it this different sounding Yodalarm is considered experimental. Stay safe and healthy.
Thanks 🙂 It's possible this type of alarm is being trialled on this crossing. We may see more of these being installed in the near future.
Definitely one of my favourites, If i have a chance, I will visit here one day. Great video! 😁
Thanks! 😁 The Portsmouth Direct Line crossings is worth visiting. Each crossing is very unique.
The alarm is the DIN tone - it’s the German standard fire alarm tone.
👍
That's the German "DIN" tone, used as fire alarm over there
👍
They set the alarm on the German fire tone, aka, the DIN tone, by accident
Great video and catch!
Thank you 👍
Strange to see the German DIS tone being used on a level crossing
Yeah it was strange. Only a temporary measure unfortunately.
Sounds like an alien invasion alarm
Yeah it does lol
That must drive the people mad in that house… also didn’t seem like much time between gates closing and the train coming!
I guess they probably get used to the sound of the alarm and the trains passing after a while lol. It doesn't take long at all for trains to pass this crossing
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I guess so - it’s a bit like the steam trains near me - I barely notice them now.
my freind lives right next to that crossing
@@by5171 nice!
Interesting. I wonder how it sounds when there is a double stay.
I did film such an occurrence after this closure. Very oddly the alarms cut out and stopped sounding. I rang the SOS phone and reported it to the signaller. Filmed the video so I will post it soon.
That is quite dangerous. It makes it seem as if there isn't another train and that the barriers ought to have lifted so yes you were right to use the save our souls phone.
That's the DIN Tone. It is the german fire alarm tone. These are meant not just for UK applications but the rest of europe, too. France uses a 0.1/0.4 sec hi-lo at A and C#. These also have general use tones as well.
Ah right, thanks for that 👍 This must be the only crossing in the UK to have an alarm on a sweeping tone
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel A low-to-high sweeping tone IS a valid fire tone in the UK FYI. I've seen that on a Welsh LC and many moving bridges. Though the more common 0.5/0.5 Hi-Lo is used at plenty of moving bridges as well. And thank you!
Ahh ok. Do you know which Welsh LC that is by any chance??
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I believe it was Stwlan Dam Level Crossing. Nathan A RF filmed it. th-cam.com/video/fjtgHFBBebM/w-d-xo.html
Great video
Thanks! 😎
It creeps me out.... But nice video!
It does sound weird lol. Thank you 😁
Yeaa its defo a fire alarm 😂
That is one of the most messed up sounds I have ever heard
Yeah, ikr 😂
That alarm sounds terrible
Yeah ikr
im gessing that thats the only alarm that was in stock ???
Yodalarm ya50 instead of a ya30
Bloody hell, what IS that?!?! Alien invasion? Zombie apocalypse? Wannabe Star Wars reenactment?
That’s the craziest train alarm I’ve heard in my life, and it definitely pegs the needle on today’s Weird-Stuff-O-Meter!
Hahaha, it is pretty weird. Wasn't expecting such a sound from a new alarm at this crossing.
Sounds more like the SCDF Important Message signal
Sounds like a laser lol
Yeah lol
It's not every day you seen one of them alarms
Yeah, this was a very unique installation. Unfortunately it only lasted a few months and it was replaced with a standard Yodalarm again.
Thanks
I like them
Please tell me that’s not going to be the new sound for UK crossings😐
Well, this is the first time I've heard this sound at a crossing before. I doubt this is going to be the new normal.
I just checked RS to try and find the tone sheet since the C&S site seems to have vanished and these are priced at £234
The original manufacturer have probably gone out of business because if all the knock off imports, hence why the remaining stock of genuine ones are now worth so much. Haven't the Klaxon brand ones gone up too?
@@charlotteclarke4665 I don't think Klaxon have become more expensive other than general inflation. The Nexus series will cost a bit more than some but what you you expect for a sounder with 61 tones and three signal stage capabilities
@@FM60260 I though Stahl bought C&S?
That is very weird, yet very interesting 🤔 this is the German fire tone used on fire alarms across the country, this could be a new, yet weird but also uncommon 🟢 yodalarm!/bell!
Unfortunately it was just a one-off as it was replaced by a normal yodalarm a few months later.
Hey! I beat you to it on the south downs tour!
Well I would never have found out about this alarm if it wasn't for your video, so good work finding it and filming it 👍
That. Is. One. Weird. Crossing. Alarm.
Yeah it is, definitely
I'm guessing it might have been complaints from the house right next to the train line.. About how noisy it is?
It isn't that loud. It was installed here to replace a previous faulty alarm.
Nice to see a freight train do you get many when filming
Not usually, especially when I film on quiet lines. I was quite lucky to see two in the morning heading to Epsom
Blind person thinks it's just a burglar alarm on an industrial estate. *Walks straight into path of train*
Hopefully not although the alarm has been replaced with a normal sounding one now lol
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Was going to say. Trouble is it could confuse the public with what's recognised as a standard audible British national warning sound for level crossings especially for those who are blind or partially sighted. I know these Yodalarms or Roshni's or whatever they call them are susceptible to water ingress and weather damage over the years of hanging behind a WigWag sign. But you get a noise that sounds like an alarm for an industrial unit for someone who's got no sight at all and they don't hear a barrier motor to go with it that could end up catastrophic. They can't see the tracks or the WigWags. To be honest I think all crossings should have an automated Speaker voice that should say "Level crossing alert oncoming Train Approaching" along with the Yodalarm sound.
I've always though a bell rather than a siren would be better at level crossings. Especially at more rural locations.
Most of the UK crossings use electronic alarms. However, there is a couple of crossings that still have bells.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Do you have any videos of ones that use bells?? Sirens are bit of an overkill imo.that goods train was going fast though.
Sounds like a fire alarm
Sounds more like a submarine dive alarm than something used for a level crossing.
Yeah I've never heard an alarm sound like this used on any crossing before
Fire level crossing
I guess NR Need to change the tone of that YO5 from fire alarm to sweep/yodal haha
Well as of a few months ago the YA50 alarm (which I think it s) has been replaced with a default YO3 yodalarm so the weird sweep tone is no more
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel nice
That is a weird alarm, it sounds like a fire alarm
Edit: I bet its really weird when its a double stay
Yeah it is very weird. And funnily enough I did actually catch two trains at once here. However, there was a malfunction with the alarms and instead of increasing speed, they both turned off. I reported it to the signaller.
What is there an alien attack coming! Oh my god that is just so weird
Yeah haha, sounds very Sci-Fi
There’s my freight train! I enjoyed that! My wife and I were wondering if you have a train schedule or do you wait until a train arrives?
Klaus
Glad you enjoyed it 😁 I use a live online timetable site called RealTimeTrains for train scheduled in the UK
That alarm sounds more like my schools fire alarm than a LC alarm.
Yeah, never heard this alarm on a mainline crossing before
the alarm makes me stressed
Such a rare site to b seeing 2 YO5s on dis AHB level crossing
There's only one of the bigger alarms and it's apparently known as a YA50 not a YO5
Wow mate awesome video, by far the best recording of this crossing so far. 😁😁
Thanks very much mate 😁
C Eagles Wtf’s your problem?
It sounds like a baby version of whelens gas proof protection tone lol
Sounds and looks like a European fire alarm
It sounds really quiet too.
Yeah, it's not that loud, but it's also not really quiet.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Maybe it's just because it's on camera that its volume sounds different.
I wonder how the ATC warning is gene sound like.
Well, funnily enough, I found out it doesn't have one lol
What the...
Why is the alarm sounded bad
Btw nice video I came to do a reaction
It's set to a different tone setting. The alarm can produce different sounds and the one heard was the one it was set to. And thanks 😊
Is the double stay on youtube, if so whats the link
No, I'm probably the first to film it, but I won't upload the video just yet
WTH is wrong with that Alarm
TF is that tone
A very weird one lol
Sounds like the crossing needs some TLC!
Well, this is a new alarm which was installed recently to replace a faulty one. So technically it's already had some TLC lol
Sounds like something from space invaders
That Alarm Is A Type Of Fire Alarm Tone
Yeah, according to others in the comments it's a German fire alarm tone
Its the future!!
Sounds like they have bought a "clone" product off Alibaba
Thats a yodalarm...
On that wierd alarm.
Yeah, very weird
This is how the German fire alarm sounds according to DIN 33404 as standard.
Ah that's cool, thanks for that
New coronavirus alarm 🚨 lol
Yeah lol
Cool video! The alarm used for this crossing is commonly used for fire alarms.
Thanks! 😎 Yeah, it sounds like it's used more for fire alarms. This is the first time I've heard such a tone on a crossing.
UK Level Crossings Channel yea it sounds rather concerning lol
Wonder what the double stay sound like
It didn't actually have one as I found out.
Is that is a fire alarm
Sort of. I believe the tone is from a French fire alarm
Nope, it's the German fire tone.
Is like police or ambulance
